三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,计30分)
A
Children's education is changing very fast today. In the past, teachers made children sit quietly for hours. They made them remember all kinds of things. The children had to go on reading things again and again until they knew them "by heart". Today many teachers wonder if it is possible to make children learn at all. They say you can only help them learn. They say you must let children learn and discover things for themselves. But for some of the children, school is a kind of place they cannot escape from. They are there only because their parents make them go. They get out of the classroom as soon as the teachers let them leave. Many of them want to find jobs but the law will not let them work until they reach a certain age. And
so, they have to stay in school. Often they do not learn anything at all and hate every moment.

When my wife left this world, I chose to travel in Antigua looking for a peaceful place to rest my old body. Not quite old and weak, I felt I wanted something more than the usual hotel room with 24-hour room service.
I decided this year to try something completely new and booked myself a private holiday home in Antigua. This was the best decision I had ever made, as there was plenty to do, plenty to see and lots of lovely restaurants to visit. There was a private swimming pool, and a cool, wide yard where I ate my breakfast most mornings.
Antigua has to be one of the loveliest places on earth to spend a holiday. The bright blue sea and the endless blue around the beach areas proved to be an excellent place for me to spend the long afternoons.
I had to hurry to do what I wanted to do before the holiday came to an end.
I managed to visit the Sugar Mill and Shirley Heights on my last two days and yet found myself wondering whether I could extend for a few more days.
I rented a boat a nd came home after a day’s sailing, refreshed, looking forward to dinner. Everything is so pleasant on these beautiful islands, swept by the trade winds and warmed by the sun for so many summer months. Scientists who study the climate are still arguing about how fast the earth is warming and how much it will warm, but they do agree that the earth is warming and that it will keep warming if we don’t do anything about it.
Scientists agree that the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料) like oil and coal
cause greenhouse gases to escape into the air and that these gases are causing most of the warming. Another cause is deforestation (cutting down trees) . Trees soak up carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases, from the air.
There are already some changes happening because of global warming. Sea level is rising and some animals are already moving to new homes. It’s already too late to stop global warming completely.
If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some kinds of plants and animals that is disappearing because they can’t move to new homes. There may be more storms and floods. Sea level may rise so much that people have to move away from the coasts. Some areas may become too dry for farming.
Global warming is a very difficult problem to fix. People are having a hard time agreeing on what to do about it. For example, everyone agrees that wasting energy is a bad thing to do. But some people think that the federal government (联邦政府) should make laws about it, while other people think it should be up to each person or business to decide what to do.
Many states and businesses in the United States are not waiting until the federal government decides what to do. They have already started working on the problem.
62. What are the scientists arguing about in the passage?
A. How fast is the earth warming?
B. How much will the earth warm?
C. T he earth will keep warming if we don’t do anything about it.
D. Both A and B.
63. What does the underlined phrase “soak up” mean?
A. take off
B. grow up
C. take in
D. set up
64. What may be the causes of global warming?
A. The disappearance of plants and animals and the wasting energy.
B. The burning of fossil fuels and storms and floods.
C. The burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.
D. The rising of sea level and deforestation.
65. What is the best title of this passage?

五、任务型阅读(共10空;每空1分,计10分)(每空一词)
Hi, everyone! I will graduate from high school in June. Some of my foreign friends have asked me about the process of entering an American university(综合性大学), so here I will tell you how it works.
First you have to choose which university you want to go to. This is not easy, as there are over 3,000 universities and colleges in the USA. Do you want to stay near home, or do you want to go far away? What do you want to study? Once you have decided what is important to you, I would suggest choosing about five schools to apply to (申请). This way, if one or two schools do not accept you, you still have a chance of being accepted by the others.
After you have chosen which schools you would like to apply to, you have to finish an application form for each one. You also need to ask two or three of your teachers to write letters to the universities explaining why you would be a good university student. For many people, the worst part of applying for university is taking tests. Depending on which college or university you want to go to, you have to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), which tests your language, math and writing skills, or the American College Test (ACT), which tests your knowledge in English, math, science and history.
After you have been accepted to a university, you need to be able to pay for your study there. To help students pay for their education, the government offers loans(贷款)which students do not have to repay until after they graduate. Scholarships(奖学金)are also available to students who have excellent grades, who are good players or who have financial(财政)needs. Because university tuition is so expensive, many students also work part-time while they are at university.
University courses are quite different from classes at high school. You only go to each class two or three times a week, you have to study a lot more outside of class. Classes are much bigger too and some can have as many as 200 students in
