22.(8分)If we want to find out what kind of technology people used in the past, we normally have to rely on archaeologists to find ruined buildings and parts of tools or instruments or machines. Archaeologists then try to reconstruct, sometimes with the help of computer technology, what these ancient buildings and objects must have looked like, and how they might have been made. Sometimes historians are lucky and find an ancient document with a written description of these ancient buildings and objects.
We can understand, then, why Chinese historians were so excited when they found cave paintings which show ancient science. They found these paintings in the world-renowned Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City, in Northwest China's Gansu Province. There are 500 man-made caves and they have survived for at least 1,600 years. Almost all of these caves have paintings on their ceilings or walls and they date from the 4th to 14th centuries. Wang Jinyu is an expert on these cave paintings (also called frescoes) and he says: “We discovered frescoes containing scientific and technological content in almost all of the caves which have frescoes.” Wha t is remarkable about these cave paintings according to the Xinhua News Agency is that they provide evidence of "scientific and technological inventions by ancient Chinese in maths, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, agronomy, architecture, textiles, traffic and transportation, arms and military equipment and medical sciences".
Among the discoveries experts have made are cave paintings showing ancient techniques of pottery making and wine production and paintings showing ancient weaving machines and then toothbrushes! The paintings also give some evidence of the lifestyle at the time with, for example, pictures of people boiling milk over 1,000 years ago. Experts believe that there is more evidence to be found, but even now the caves are a wonderful natural museum. If the walls and ceilings of the caves were all put together they would form a tapestry 20 kilometers long and 2 meters high!
It won't be possible to travel back in time-that only happens in films-but visiting these caves would be the nearest experience you could get to travelling back in time.
1、Why were Chinese historians excited when they found cave paintings showing ancient science?
A.Because they had rarely seen cave paintings.
B.Because they could make the place a tourist attraction.
C.Because they could learn about ancient science through them.
D.Because they would be given lots of money for the discovery.
2、The Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City______.
A.have 500 man-made caves
B.have been there for at most 1,600 years
C.help us to know little about ancient science
D.have paintings on their ceilings in every cave

23.(8分)We’ve all had cases where we’ve waited just a bit too long to pay an electric bill or speeding ticket. But one man, from California by reasonable assumption, who goes by “Dave”, recently took procrastination (拖延) one step further, by paying a parking ticket almost a half-century after it was given.
In December 2018, the Minersville Police Department in Pennsylvania received a letter in the mail. Whoever wrote the letter decided it was best to keep his name somewhat unknown, so he put the return address as “Wayward Road, Anytown California” under the name “Feeling guilty”.
When the officers opened the envelope, they found a brief letter, along with a $5 bill, and a parking ticket dating all the way back to 1974. The note read, “Dear PD, I’ve been carrying this ticket around for 40 plus years always intending to pay. Forgive me if I don’t give you my info. With respect, Dave.”
Even though the initial parking ticket was only for $2, “Dave” must have felt awfully guilty because he left 150 percent, or $3, in interest.
Michael Combs, the Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department, stated in an interview that the same ticket would cost about $20 if it were given today. Combs went on to share that the original ticket from 1974 was given to a vehicle that had an Ohio license plate.
Because there was no system for tracking tickets given to out-of-state cars back then, “Dave” could have gotten away with never paying the $2 fine. But apparently, guilt got the best of him, and he decided to finally cough up the money more than 40 years past its due date.
1、How much do we know abou t “Dave”?
A.He lives in Wayward Road, Anytown California.
B.The police are trying to find out more about him.
C.His car probably came from Ohio at that time.
D.“Dave” is of course the man’s real name indeed.
2、Why didn’t “Dave” pay for the parking ticket u ntil recently?
A.He completely forgot about it in the past 44 years.
B.He didn’t find it until almost half a century later.
C.He failed to find out who he should pay the money to.
D.He didn’t pay for it just because of procrastination.
3、What drove “Dave” to pay for the parking ticket at last?
A.A strong sense of guilt.
B.Fear of being tracked by the police.
C.Worry about being fined more.
D.Sudden change of his financial situation.
4、Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department Shares a Story
B.Mysterious Procrastinator Finally Pays 44-Y ear-Old Parking Ticket
C.Unusual Letter Comes from Wayward Road, Anytown California
D.Parking Ticket Carried Around for Almost Half a Century from Ohio
24.(8分)American families are accustomed to settling in faraway places, which has been a national phenomenon. Decades of data, including a more recent Gallup study, characterizes the US as one of the most geographically mobile countries in the world. “About one in four US adults(24 percent) has reported moving within the country in the past five years.” the reported noted. With the exception of Finns(23 percent) and Norwegians(22 percent), Americans move considerably more than their European peers.
Though some may move for love or family, the major reason why Americans choose to move around is, unsurprisingly, related to work. Citing data from the Current Population Survey, a post on the blog of the New York Fed noted that between 58 and 2013, “slightly more than half of in terstate(州际的) migrants said they moved for employment-related reasons—a category that includes moves undertaken for new jobs, job transfers, and easier commutes(通勤).”
The seeking of opportunity, particularly for an immigrant nation, is a national mythology(神话) as well as an
emotional attachment to work. A new working paper analyzed by Ben Steverman at Bloomberg suggests that workers in the US now “put in almost 25 percent more hours than Europeans” in a given year. This figure has steadily risen since the 30s, when the hours logged by workers in Western Europe and the US were roughly the same.
There are, of course, some internal factors. The US is much vaster than most European countries, plus it boasts(拥有) a common language. It is considered to be a sign of an efficient labor market that US workers can be persuaded to move to regions where there is a steady growth in jobs, such as the Sun Belt in recent years. And while American workers often have fewer labor protections than their European counterparts, as a report by the World Bank noted in 2012, American “labor laws give employers the power to fire, hire, or relocate(重新安置) workers according to their needs”,a flexibility that is thought to aid economic growth. The World Band report added that the occupation of the average US employee in 66 was 4 years, compared to 10 years in the European Union.
Nevertheless, while Americans remain excessively mobile, FaithKarahan and Darious Li at the New Y ork Fed are the latest to note that US workers are moving around less than before. During the 40s, 3 percent of working-age Americans relocated to a different state each year; that figure had been cut in half by 2010. “While part of the decline can be attributed to the Great Recession,” the authors suggest, “this__phenomenon took place over the course of several decades and is not necessarily related to the economic conditions.”
So what accounts for this phenomenon? A round-up of theories by Brad Plumer at The Washington Post included the aging of the US workforce, the further rise of two-income households, the burdens of real estate, evolving workplace culture, as well as the flat line of wages, which makes moving away for a job, on average, a less rewarding financial proposition.
Karahan and Li put much stock in the effects of an aging workforce, to which they attribute at least half of the decline in interstate migration. “In short, a young individual today is moving less than a young person did in the 40s because of the higher presence of older workers,” they write, sugg esting that employers have shifted their employment tactics(策略) to adapt to the changing demographics(人口统计数据) of the workforce. Needless to say, movies about this era in American life, in which fewer people set out to start lives in wide-ranging places, will probably be much less exciting.
1、According to the passage, in the past five years, Americans have moved ________.
A.relatively less than the British B.less frequently than Italians
C.slightly more than Norwegians D.considerably more than Finns
2、What can we infer from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.Americans choose to move mainly for work and family.
B.Americans have a very strong interest in work.
C.Americans invested more time in work than Europeans in 35.
D.Americans tended to move to Europe between 58 and 2013.
3、Which of the following is NOT the reason why American workers move more than their European peers? A.There is a common language in the US.
B.The US is much vaster than most European countries.
C.American labor laws give employers more freedom to deal with them.
D.They are offered more efficient labor protections.
4、The underlined part “this phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A.the Great Recession
B.the decline of working-age Americans' interstate migration
C.the reduction in the number of working-age Americans
D.Americans' tendency to remain mobile
5、How do American employers deal with the aging workforce according to the passage?
A.By sticking to their previous policies. B.By adjusting to it.
C.By improving their employees' job skills. D.By raising employment standard.
6、As to the current situation of Americans migration, the author might feel ________.
A.curious B.strange C.confused D.disappointed
25.(10分)Jeremy Baras remembers the first time he ever saw a pop-up restaurant. The 26-year-old entrepreneur was on vacation in England four years ago and had to look up at the London Eye Ferries wheel to see it. Hanging above him was a capsule(航天舱) full of diners who were served a new course each time a revolution was made. “I thought that was the coolest thing ever”, he says. Baras, who founded in 2012 to promote the idea of pop-up restaurants in the USA, has been studying them ever since.
Pop-ups, which have been around since at least the early 2000s, are open anywhere from a few hours to several months, but their defining feature is that they are temporary. They may be only a tiny part of the $709 billion U.S. restaurant industry, but pop-ups have gotten a boost in recent years as a lower-cost, lower-risk way for entrepreneurs to test the waters. Some restaurant owners see them as a way to renew interest in existing locations. And some struggling cities, like Oakland, California, have turned to them to help revitalize local economies impacted by the recession(衰退).
The concept has been especially popular with up-and-coming chefs who want to test-drive as a menu concept without investing a fortune in a permanent space. “Your cooks and chefs are really talented, but they’re stuck in the back of somebody else’s kitchen cooking somebody else’s menu,” says Zach Kupperman, chief businessman officer and co-founder of Dinner Lab.
Chefs in Dinner Lab cook in the middle of space, give a brief introduction about the menu and themselves — and then bravely listen to diner feedback afterward. Pop-ups’ temporary nature also allows restaurateurs to charge a deposit to make sure the diners will show up.
Of course, trends in the food industry come and go quickly, and there is no guarantee that diners won’t tire of the concept. Some entrepreneurs have resorted to even weirder locations — in a former limestone mine, say, or at the top of
a crane —to keep customers interested. “It’s not quite part of the mainstream economy yet.” says Baras.
1、What does the underlined part “a revolution was made” in Parag raph One possibly mean?
A.Chefs designed creative dishes.
B.Diners tasted food in a new and creative way.
C.The capsule containing diners made a circle.
D.Great changes were made in the food industry.
2、Perspective chefs are drawn to pop-ups due to the fact that ________.
A.pop-ups are becoming increasingly popular with diners worldwide
B.they have the desire to explore a safer way to make a living
C.their investment in pop-ups will bring them a long-lasting fortune
D.pop-ups provide a changeable test field for talented chefs’ creativity
3、The writer’s purpose of writing the passenger is ________.
A.to appeal to people to dine out in pop-up restaurants
B.to give a brief introduction of pop-up restaurants
C.to warn business owners of the appearance of pop-up restaurants
D.to foresee the future of pop-up restaurants’ development
