英语阅读理解(人生百味)练习题含解析
一、高中英语阅读理解人生百味类
1.阅读理解
I stopped to watch my little girl busy playing in her room. In one hand was a plastic phone ; in the other a toy. I listened as she was speaking to her make-believe little friend and I'll never forget the words she said, even though it was imagined.
She said, "Suzie's in the corner because she's not been very good. She didn't listen to a word I said or do the things she should." In the corner I saw her baby doll well dressed. It was obvious that she'd been put there to sit alone and think.
My daughter continued her "conversation", as I sat down on the floor. She said, "I'm all fed up and I just don't know what to do with her any more. She cries whenever I have to work and wants to play games too. She tries to help me with the dishes, but her arms just cannot reach... And she doesn't know how to fold towels. I don't have the time to teach. I have a lot of work to do and a big house to keep clean. I don't have the time to sit and play - don't you know what I mean?"
And that day I thought a lot about making some changes in my life, after listening to her innocent words which cut me like a knife. I hadn't been paying enough attention to what I hold most dear. I'd been caught up in responsibilities that increased throughout the years.
But now my attitude has changed because in my heart I realize that I've seen the world in a different light through my little darling's eyes. So let the cobwebs(蜘蛛网) cut the corners and the dust bunny rabbit rule the floor. I'm not going to worry about keeping up with them anymore. I'm going to fill the house with memories of a child and her mother, for we have only one childhood and we will never get another.

2.阅读理解
Do you often feel that you aren't taking in as much of the joy around you as you could? I recently caught myself feeling this way, and based on a suggestion by John Horton, coauthor (合著者) of The Inner Game of Stress, I put myself on a 30-day life-appreciation course.
The only assignment each day was to go outside and appreciate life.
So I started by taking in the beauty around me. During the first few days, I was able to appreciate my surroundings, although it was an intellectual appreciation, not an emotional one. After the first week, it was more uncomfortable to lie in bed and think about things than it was to get up and see them for myself.
If you often wake up feeling anxious or depressed, or if you don't look forward to each day, then you need to try this course for yourself.
It's an inner workout that you can do anywhere. It may not change your life, but it will adjust your attitude, and that's pretty helpful in this crazy world.
I have always believed in ending the day on a positive note by writing a word or two in a gratitude journal and saying something sweet to my wife about the day we shared.
Now, I have a new morning habit. It hasn't changed my routine one bit, but it has changed the way I look at the world.
Creating a new habit isn't about perfection – it's about getting what you want by creating a change in your behavior and thinking.
So now, while I'm making my coffee in the morning, I'm also appreciating what I have.
It's quick, fulfilling, and a much better way to start my day than looking at my phone or computer.
And because of this, my attitude is better, as I've already begun my morning on a positive note rather than a problematic one.
The idea here is that if you can appreciate your life, it actually changes the way you feel about it.
Appreciation will give you more energy to live the way you would like to live.
As a means of improving our mood, it's highly underrated (被低估的). The easy task of appreciating what we have simply makes life better.
(1)How did the author feel about seeing things for himself after he started the life-appreciation course?
A. Comfortable.
B. Doubtful.
C. Anxious.
D. Depressed.
(2)What does the author think of his new morning habit?
A. It has changed his daily routine.
B. It has increased his desire for perfection.
C. It has improved his physical health.
D. It has changed his way of viewing the world.(3)Which of the following might the author disagree to?
A. Enjoying the beautiful surroundings of your neighborhood.
B. Appreciating a cup of coffee in the morning.
C. Amusing yourself with your phone to start your day.
D. Seeing things from a different angle.
(4)What's the author's main purpose in writing this article?
A. To recommend a life-appreciation course to readers.
B. To explain why appreciation is often underrated.
C. To encourage readers to be grateful for life.
D. To advise all the readers to change their lifestyle.
【答案】(1)A

3.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

We were silently waiting on the platform in the late afternoon. There he was, my 80-year-old grandfather with his silvery hair. And there I was, a teenage girl in my jeans and T-shirt. His aged but still clear blue eyes were taking in the scene as I wondered how I was going to get through the next two days. Why did I ever agree to accompany my cranky grandpa on a train ride from New York to Georgia?
No one else wanted to be the fellow traveler since my grandfather refused to fly. In contrast, I loved to fly since I wanted to get to the destination as quickly as possible. No matter what anyone told my grandfather about the comfort and safety of flying, he refused to book a flight, saying, "It's not just the trip; it's the adventure of getting there."
With my first step onto the train, the journey was already different from what I expected. The train was modem and filled with friendly travelers. We settled into the club car, where we could enjoy food and drinks while watching the scenery pass. Instead of listening to my music, I became a willing audience and learned family history that I had never had the time or patience to learn. With teary eyes, he told me that going to family events was hard for him since my grandmother died. It always made him think about those who were no longer with us. For the first time I felt I understood him. I gained a new appreciation for our time together.
In this fast-paced world, we often miss important moments. There is great significance in listening to elders who offer a piece of their history and experience. I may be more open to opportunities to stay with my grandpa. Life isn't just about the destination; it's about the journey.(1)What does the underlined word "cranky" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Health.
B. Strange.
C. Selfless.
D. Outgoing.
(2)What did the author think of the journey at first?
A. It would be boring.
B. She would learn something during it.
C. It would be a chance to know about her grandpa.
D. She would enjoy the beautiful scene during it.
(3)What made the author change her attitude towards staying with her grandpa?
A. Her grandpa's appreciation of her.
B. Her grandpa's missing her relatives.
C. The sad stories of her grandmother.
D. The new understanding of her grandpa.
(4)What can we learn from the text?
A. Listening to elders will help us learn a lot.
B. Caring for elders needs a lot of creativity.
C. There always is beautiful scenery along the journey.
D. Travelling by train is more comfortable than by plane.
【答案】(1)B
(2)A

4.阅读理解
I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals for two elderly women in my community. Both had died "full of years", as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased(过世的)woman said to me, "If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It's my fault that she died." At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, "If only I hadn't insisted on my mother's going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the
sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It's my fault that she's dead."
You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course—keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation—would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.
A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to his tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.
(1)What is said about the two deceased elderly women?
A.They lived out a natural life.
B.They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride.
C.They weren't used to the change in weather.
D.They died due to lack of care by family members.
(2)The author had to conduct the two women's funerals probably because .
A.he wanted to comfort the two families
B.he was an official from the community
C.he had great pity for the deceased
D.he was minister of the local church
(3)People feel guilty for the death of their loved ones because .
A.they found the funerals unsatisfactory
B.they believed that they were responsible
C.they had ignored the natural course of events
D.they didn't know things often turn in the opposite direction
(4)People have been made to believe since babyhood that .
A.everybody should try to meet others' needs
B.life and death is an unsolved mystery
C.every story should have a happy ending
D.their wishes are the cause of everything that happens
【答案】(1)A
(2)D

They also often work together directly on phrases that Takamizawa will need for the Olympics. "Welcome to Tokyo, this is the Olympic stadium, how can I help you?" Takamizawa answers when asked to say an English phrase she has learned. Natsuko explains that she wanted to give her grandmother something to enjoy. "I can clearly see her English is getting better. It's my joy now."
The EF English Proficiency Index is a measure of the level of English spoken in a country. Japan ranks 49th among countries where English is not the first language. Learning, Fast and Deep
Over the past five years researchers in artificial intelligence have become the rock stars of the technology world. A branch of AI known as deep learning, which uses neural(神经的) networks to scan through large volumes of data looking for patterns, has proven so useful that skilled practitioners can command high six-figure salaries to build software for Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google.
The standard route into these jobs has been a PhD in computer science from one of America's top universities. Earning one takes years and requires a personality suited to academia, which is rare among more normal folk.
That is changing.
Last month fast.ai, a non-profit education organization based in San Francisco, kicked off the third year of its course in deep learning. Since its foundation it has attracted more than 100, 000 students around the globe from India to Nigeria. The course and others like it, come with a simple idea: there is no need to spend years obtaining a PhD in order to practise deep learning. Creating software that learns can be taught as a craft, not as a high intellectual pursuit to be undertaken only in an ivory tower. Fast. ai's course can be completed in just seven weeks.
To make it accessible to anyone who wants to learn how to build AI software is the aim of Jeremy Howard, who founded fast.ai with Rachel Thomas, a mathematician. He says school mathematics is sufficient. "No. Greek. Letters," Mr. Howard intones, pounding the table with his fist for punctuation.
Some experts worry that this will serve only to create a flood of unreliable AI systems which will be useless at best and dangerous at worst. In the earliest days of the Internet, only a select few nerds, namely computer holies with specific skills, could build applications. Not many people used them. Then the invention of the World Wide Web led to an explosion of web pages, both good and bad. But it was only by opening up to all that the Internet gave birth to online shopping, instant global communications and search. If Mr. Howard and others have their way, making the development of AI software easier will bring forth a new crop of fruit of a different kind.
(1)What can we learn about deep learning?
A. It replaces artificial intelligence.
B. It attracts rock stars to practice.
C. It scans patterns for large companies.
D. It helps technicians to create software.
(2)Fast. ai is an organization that .
A. ensures one to obtain a PhD
B. teaches craft in ivory tower
C. offers a course in deep learning
D. requires weeks to apply
(3)The underlined words "No. Greek. Letters"in Paragraph 5 means doing fast.ai course is .
A. easy
B. difficult
C. interesting
D. boring
(4)It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A. it is quite reliable for anyone to grasp artificial intelligence
B. the Internet has brought forth a flood of useless AI systems
C. opening up to all leads to instant global search and online shopping
D. simplifying software development may result in unexpected outcomes
【答案】(1)D
(2)C
(3)A
(4)D

Singles Day: Alibaba Says a Lot of People in China Bought Online
The planet's biggest shopping day has come and gone, and Alibaba again showed the world how
many mountains of stuff (物品) it could persuade people to buy in the 24 hours.
Monday was Nov. 11, known in China as Singles Day. This year, nearly $38.3 billion worth of stuff was sold on Alibaba's platforms (平台) that day, beating last year's $30.8 billion and making Black Friday look, yet again, like a yard sale.
China has grown richer and more digitally connected. Alibaba has become a technology powerhouse. Along the way, the company has made a few famous friends. This year the singer Taylor Swift performed in its live-streamed evening gala (庆典) in Shanghai on Sunday. Alibaba started taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese manufacturers with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, allowed people to buy almost everything. Alibaba's advantage wasn't hard to see: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards.
Alibaba now calls itself a data and technology company, one that provides digital tools to help the businesses on its platforms. Rumors (谣言): we've all heard some and we've all spread some. In more traditional times they shook entire families. Today, they travel differently because the way we share information has also changed.
The fact is that rumors have great potential to upset things, whether socially or personally. We don't enjoy being on the receiving end of one, since they usually don't have good intentions. They are somewhat veiled (掩饰的) messages.
Normally rumors are oral messages: word of mouth. The paradox (自相矛盾) is that there is no evidence to support rumors, but the more people share it, the more they see it as true. To finish explaining rumors, we think that they follow certain very clear laws. Secrecy: The source is unknown. There is also a proven phenomenon that human beings usually forget the source of a message before they forget its content. Certainty: We hardly question rumors simply because of the mental effort involved. On the other hand, no one likes to doubt a person who convinces us that the information they spread is true. Change: It acts like a tree. New rumors branch out to fill in the gaps left by the first rumor.。
