Dave got out of bed quietly and dressed quickly. He mixed a spoonful of instant chocolate into a glass of cold water, and h is impatience forced him to finish the drink in gulps.
As he walked down toward the lake, Dave paused to reach f or the fishing pole and gear box(齿轮
箱) on the bench where he had left them the night before.
By the time he reached the small boat, a thick white mist had spread over the surface of the water. He stepped into the boat , sat down, and rowed out of the weed beds that lined the edg e of the shore.
The outer fringe (边
缘) of the lake disappeared as the boat moved forward noisel essly. All he could see was the enveloping whiteness. He coul d not tell where the boat and the surrounding air met the surfa ce of the lake.
Dave rowed steadily ahead, relying on a mental picture of th
e surroundings. Then the mist began to rise, slowly. It soon re sted inches above the still surface o
f the lake. The heavy silen ce was now bein

Dogs are called man’s best friends, and owners who don’t pla y with their dogs find their pets suffer behavior
problems such as anxiety and aggression , according to a sur vey .
Dogs show symptoms such as “complaining and jumping up , as well as pulling on the lead and not coming when called”, th e study of 4,000 dog owners said. And scientists are beginning to agree that play is the key to a dog’s happiness.
The research , carried out by Emily Blackwell of Bristol Univer sity , showed just one in five owners played with their dogs six times a day, while half played twice or three times a day with their pets and 10 percent played just once. The study found th at there was “a growing acceptance” that the “frequency of pla y for dogs is a really good indicator of their quality of life”. The re is a clear association in the results. Owners report more po tential behavior problems in dogs that play less.
The survey , which will be broadcast on the Channel 4 progra m Dogs: Their Secret Lives, also shows that a dog’s favorite g ame is “fetch” , according to 43 percent of owners. However,
Laura Dobb , who took part in the show, said if she threw her rescue dog Nash a tennis ball, he would throw it up in the air but wouldn’t bring it back .
The type of game owners played with their pets was important , according to one expert , who said that owners needed to fi nd out which ones their animals enjoyed rather than “imposin g a game”. When owners chose to play tug with their pets, he added that it was “rubbish” if they felt they had to let their dog s win out of fear. The animal would “dominate (主宰)
their whole life”.
What plays an important part in a dog’s happiness ?

C. a dog’s game that becomes popular because of the Cha nnel 4.
D.a game that can show the secret of dogs’ lives.
If we impose a game to a dog , it is quite possible that ______
______.
A. the dog quite enjoys the game.
B. the game is quite popular among dogs.
C. this is a newly invented dog game.
D. the game may not be the dog’s cup of tea.
We can infer from the passage that ___________.
A. owners spend too much time on their dogs .
B. Laura Dobb never did “fetch”game with her dog.
C. it’s unwise to let the dog win a game purposely.
D. many owners are afraid of their pet animals .

We all know what a brain is. A doctor will tell you that the brai n is the organ of the body in the head. It controls our body’s fu nctions, movements, emotions and thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more.
A brain can also simply be a smart person. If a person is calle d brainy, she is smart and intelligent. If a family has many chil dren but one of them is super smart, you could say “She’s the brains in the family.” And if you are the brains behind somethi ng you are responsible for developing or organizing somethin g. For example, Bill Gates is the brains behind Microsoft.
Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice. Word expert s say the phrase “brain trust” became popular when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in 1932. Several professor s gave him advice on social and political issues facing the U.S . These professors were called his “brain trust.”
These ways we use the word “brain” all make sense. But othe r ways we use the word are not so easy to understand. For ex ample, to understand the next brain expression, you first need to know the word “drain”. As a verb, to drain means to remov e something by letting it flow away. So a brain drain may soun d like a disease where the brain flows out the ears. But, brain drain is when a country’s most educated people leave their co untries to live in another. The brains are, sort of, draining out of the country.
However, if people are responsible for a great idea, you could say they brainstormed it. Here, brainstorm is not an act of we ather. It is a process of thinking creatively about a complex to pic. For example, business leaders may use brainstorming to create new products, and government leaders may brainstor m to solve problems.
If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are ni ce and clean. To brainwash means to make someone accepts new beliefs by using repeated pressure in a forceful or tricky
way. Keep in mind that brainwash is never used in a positive way.
32. Why did Roosevelt successfully win the election?
A. Because word experts were popular.
B. Because he g ot his brain trust.
C. Because he was smart at giving advice.
D. Because he was the brains behind American.
33. According to the text, if you’re the CEO of Lenovo you can be called_______ .
A. the organ of Lenovo
B. the brain drain of Leno vo
C. the brains behind Lenovo
D. Lenovo’s brain trust
34. Which of the following expression is always used in a neg ative way?
A. Brainstorm
B. Brain trust
C. Brainwash
D. Brain drain
35. What’s the main idea of this article?
A. The origin of the word “brain”.
B. The word “brain” and it s stories.
C. What is the brain.
D. The difference between “brain trust” and “brainwashed”.

At a few minutes past five, Dave noted that the blanket of darkness was lifting. He was just a ble to make out the heavier masses that eventually appeared as the familiar trees that lined t he road at the base of the hill. The upper reaches of the sky showed lighter shades of gray. Dave got out of bed quietly and dressed quickly. He mixed a spoonful of instant chocolate i nto a glass of cold water, and his impatience forced him to finish the drink in gulps.
As he walked down toward the lake, Dave paused to reach for the fishing pole and gear bo
x(齿轮箱) on the bench where he had left them the night before.
By the time he reached the small boat, a thick white mist had spread over the surface of the water. He stepped into the boat, sat down, and rowed out of the weed beds that lined the edg e of the shore.
The outer fringe (边
缘) of the lake disappeared as the boat moved forward noiselessly. All he could see was the enveloping whiteness. He could not tell where the boat and the surrounding air met the surfa ce of the lake.
Dave rowed steadily ahead, relying on a mental picture of the surroundings. Then the mist began to rise, slowly. It soon rested inches above the still surface of the lake. The heavy sile nce was now being broken by the fish breaking through the surface as they leaped out of the water for low-flying insects.
The magic time had arrived. Dave raised his pole. Dawn was broken. He was excited with e xpectancy.
