A
Bored with your life? Dreaming of something different? I always wonder what life would be like400 kmabove my head. That's where the International Space Station orbits the earth, with six astronauts living and working on board, for months at a time.
How do they sleep? They spend the night floating in a sleeping bag inside a small cubicle (小隔间) on the ceiling. American astronaut Sunita Williams explains, “It's like a little phone booth, but it's pretty comfortable and it doesn't matter if I turn overand sleep upside down. I don't have any sensation (感觉) in my head that tells me I'm upside down.”
Brushing your teeth in a place where you can't have a tap or a sink can be a challenge. Can you imagine the mess that running water would make in zero gravity? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield uses a straw to put a big blob of water from a sealed bag onto an ordinary toothbrush and adds a little toothpaste which he has to swallow when he's done.
Daily exercise is essential. The lack of gravity makes bones more fragile and muscles lose strength — so astronauts are encouraged to work out for at least two hours a day.
The role of astronauts in the International Space Station is to act as lab technicians for scientists back on earth. So they spend their time maintaining their environment and performing and monitoring experiments in a confined space about the size of a Boeing 747. Almost every task is carefully planned by mission control — although most astronauts spend their first days losing things until they get used to sticking everything they use to the walls with Velcro, duct tape (强力胶带) or clips (夹子).
One of their most valued perks (额外待遇) is the view from “the office”, dominated by that gigantic blue ball down there, sitting in the darkness of space. Wow! Absolutely breathtaking!
1. When they sleep upside down, the astronauts willnot get dizzy because ________.
A. they don't feel it
B. they sleep in the daytime
C. they sleep in special sleeping bags
D. they are trained to adapt to the conditions of weightlessness
2. What parts become weak if astronauts don't exercise?
A. Their teeth and bones.
B. Their brains and bones.
C. Their bones and muscles.
D. Their teeth and muscles.
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The Problems We Met in Space.
B. Living and Working in Space.
C. How to Become an Astronaut.
D. The International Space Station.
B
My entire life has been influenced by the fact that I stand way above the average height for both men and women. I was born two weeks late. When I finally entered the world I weighed 11 pounds 10 ounces and was 24 inches long. When my mom told my grandmother my measurements, she asked in amazement, "Are you okay?!"
I was healthy, but very shy as a child and into my teens. I'm from a small town, and I grew up and graduated with the same 50 people. I started playing basketball in third grade every Saturday, but I didn't have any control over my awkward body. (I didn't even score a point in a game until many years later.) I was 5-foot-10 in fourth grade. I had a small group of friends in elementary school, but sometimes the boys picked on me, calling me a bean pole or the Jolly Green Giant. I still remember my embarrassment when they laughed at me, and how badly I wanted to be invisible.
In high school I got more involved in sports, but I spent most days in the art room. By this time everyone at my school was used to my height (by ninth grade I was 6-foot-3), but if I went out of town people would stare at me and comment about my appearance.I was forced into the spotlight wherever I went.
With high school came more confidence. I had success in school, the arts and sports. I played basketball, but my true passion was track and field. During my senior year I was the conference champion in high jump and the 400-meter run. The friendships I gained through my involvement in high school boosted my confidence and helped me develop a sense of humor. Now when a stranger told me I was tall I would smile and nod or, if I was feeling determined, I would pretend to feel shocked and thank them for telling me. I had no idea!
Still, society keeps me aware of my status as something rare. And even though people tell me I'm beautiful and I should be a model, there are times when I would trade in my long legs for a small frame and tiny feet. I often
wish people weren't so rude. I'm a minority only in the sense of height. I like to think that those who have insulted me didn't intend to. I do believe that most people are basically good, but they can be insensitive.
4. What can be inferred from Para.1?
A. The writer's height has something to do with her late birth.

C. The writer failed to have a successful life because of her unusual height.

5. By saying 'I was forced into the spotlight', the author probably means that she ________.
A.was criticized by others
B. caught public attention
C. was threatened
D. felt inferior
6. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned as the writer's experiences in high school?
A. She quit playing basketball and joined the track and field team.
B. She no longer felt upset when facing her height problem.
C. She had a passion for some sports events.
D. She built up more confidence.
7. What does the last sentence imply?
A. People enjoy making fun of others.
B. People are bad andcannot be trusted.
C. People tend to bully those who are weaker.
D. People sometimes care little about how others feel.
C
Nowadays organic food hasbecome a fashion. Organic food sales reached a record of $ 45.2 billion in 2017, making it one of the fastest-growing parts of American agriculture. Some people may buy organic food for these reasons like resource cycling and biodiversity, but most people may choose organic food because they think it's healthier. While a small number of studies have shown relationships between eating organic food and reducing risks of being ill, no studies, up to now, have answered the question whether eating organic food can improve health.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), organic food does not suggest anything about health. In 20155 Miles McEvoy, then chief of the National Organic Program for the USDA, refused to admit any health benefits of organic food, saying the question has nothing to do with the National Organic Program.
Instead, the USDA thinks that organic refers to a production method that increases cycling of resources keeps ecological balance, and protects biodiversity.
I'm an environmental health scientist who has spent over 20 years studying pesticides that do harm to human beings. Several years ago, I was part of the study on whether an organic diet can reduce pesticide exposure. This study focused on a group of pesticides which have always been harmful to children's brain development. We found that children who ate traditional diets had nine times higher exposure to these pesticides than children who ate organic diets.
Last month, I published a small study that suggested a path forward to answering the question whether eating organic food actually improves health. My study got a lot of attention. While the results were novel, they didn't answer the big question. As I toldThe New York Timesin 2003, “What does this really mean for the safety of my kids? But we don't know. Nobody does. It was true then, and it's still true now.”
8. Why do most people prefer to buy organic food?
A. For its health benefits.
B. For biodiversity.
C. For its delicious taste.
D. For resource cycling.
9. What does the USDA suggest about organic food?
A. It can improve people's health.
B. It is produced in an environment-friendly way.
C. It can reduce risks of being ill.
D. It has nothing to do with the National Organic Program.
10. What can be concluded from the author's study?
A. Pesticides don't harm children's brain.
B. Traditional diets benefit people's health.
C. Organic diets can reduce pesticide exposure.
D. The results are meaningful to children's safety.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A.What Is Organic Food?
B. Is Organic Food Healthier?
C. How Should We Avoid Pesticides?
D. What Are the Benefits of Organic Food?
D
Understanding the link between a clean environment and human life is not a new concept. In fact, it was noticed as early as ancient Rome. Today we see how green living has infiluenced our everyday lives. There is a growing community of people who embrace a zero waste lifestyle and make changes to the way they live to reduce their carbon footprint.
Living a zero waste lifestyle means doing one’s best to achieve the aim of not sending anything to a landfill. People who adopt this lifestyle ultimately cut down on their waste by reducing what they need and want. They
reuse what they own, sending few things to be recycled.
Many people who adopt the zero waste lifestyle claim to be frustrated by the many harmful chemical substances found in beauty and cleaning products. They also find the uses of disposable items and excessive packaging. For example, how many times have we had to peel away layers of plastic wrap and cardboard before finally taking out the item which we had bought? Instead of buying pre-packed food and goods, those who identify with the zero waste philosophy tend to shop in stores that allow them to make purchases and bring their own cloth bags and glass jars to store their purchases.
Many people may have the misconception that it is easier to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West. Nevertheless, Malaysian environmental journalist, Ms. Aurora Tin, has proven that a zero waste lifestyle is possible even in the Asian context. Instead of going to the supermarket to buy pre-packaged foods, Ms. Tin now visits the wet market and brings her own bags for vegetables. She has even stopped using store-bought toothpaste and makes her own toothpaste from coconut oil and baking soda. This lifestyle may be too big a change for the average person, but we could follow her suit to make gradual changes to our own lives.
12. Which of the following is a zero waste lifestyle?
A. Bringing a resuable container to take away food.
B. Choosing appliances that cost less money.
C. Turning off a device to stop using power.
D. Classifying the garbage before throwing it away.
13. What may disappoint a person who adopts a zero waste lifestyle?
A. Recycable carboard.
B. Excessive packaging.
C. Glass jars to store purchases.
D. Natural substances in cleaning products.
14. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How do people live a zero waste lifestyle.
B. Why Ms. Tin chooses to live a zero waste lifestyle..
C. We can also practice a zero waste lifestyle in Asia.
D. It is easy to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Living a zero waste lifestyle.
B. Going green ismore than a fashion.
C. A zero waste lifetyle is easy to achieve.
D. Making environmentally-conscious decisions.

Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs.____17____One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.
____18____I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a "ruby-crowned kinglet" and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.
The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark.____19____They never take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.

is hardly any traffic or one can enjoy the walk. In the morning nature was at its best. Having a look at leaves of trees and you’ll find pearls of dew (露水) on it. Flowers wave their heads gentle and spread their pleasant smell. A walk in a big park or on the bank of a stream is even more better refreshing.
