(6分)The word "OK" is the most frequently spoken all-purpose expression on the planet—and it's turning 21.
176 years old on March 23,2015.The term was born during a 19th-century abbreviation(缩写)craze and went on to international fame with its own hand gesture.
Last year,Henry Nass,a 64-year-old retired English teacher,a New Yorker had spent the last few weeks handing out cards championing "Global OK Day" in advance of the coming anniversary.
"No matter where people are from they use the word 'OK,'but they don't know where it comes from,"says Nass. "The problem is because it's just, you know,OK."
The word is OK,perhaps, but its history is definitely better than te etymologist Allen Walker Read traced the two-letter word to 1839,when editors at the Boston Morning Post signed off on articles as “all correct” with a simple word "OK".
The word made it into print on March 23 of that year, during an article against a rival editor in Providence who had stated wrongly that a band of Bostonians heading to New York would pass through the Rhode Island capital.
"We said not a word about our team passing 'through the city' of Providence,"the Morning Post reported."O.K.—all correct."
The humor of the Providence-Boston joke has been lost to history—but the word OK took off from there, soon connoting(隐含)agreement, acceptance, averageness, quality or likability.
By 1840,it served as a slogan for President Martin Van Buren's unsuccessful reelection campaign."Old Kinderhook is OK,"posters stated,a reference to the eighth president's birthplace and his supporters’ belief in his satisfactory performance.

22.(8分)Just a year ago, the colors were bright under the waves. Now it’s gray — the Maldivian reef is dead. The coral is killed by the pressure of rising temperatures.
Coral reefs are areas underwater where small creatures live. The coral is hard material formed on the bottom of the sea by the skeletons of those creatures. But the world has lost about half its coral reefs in the last 30 years. Scientists are working to prevent their destruction. Due to global warming, over 90 percent of corals are expected to die by 2050. “To lose coral reefs is to fundamentally undermine the health of a ver y large proportion of the human race,” said Ruth Gates, director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.
Why are coral reefs important? Coral reefs support a fourth of all marine species, as well as half a billion people worldwide. They serve as barriers to protect coastlines from the storms. They provide billions of dollars from tourism, fishing and other trade. They are also used in medical research for cures for diseases. “Everyone should be concerned,” said biologist Ove Guldberg at Australia’s University of Queensland. “This is not just some distant dive destination. This is the basic structure of the ecosystem we depend on.”
The ocean is getting warmer. A rising temperature of just one to two degree Celsius can force coral to expel the algae (驱逐海藻) that live there. This leaves their white skeletons uncovered. It is a process called “bleaching”. Sixteen percent of the world’s corals died of bleaching in 1998. The problem has become much worse in recent years.
“We’ve lost 50 percent of the reefs, but that means we still have 50 percent left,” said Ruth Gates, who is working in Hawaii to breed corals that can better withstand increasing temperatures. She is also trying to “train” corals to survive rising temperatures. Gates says it is time to start “thinking outside the box”— find creative ways to help them.
1、The underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 2 means ___________.
A.weaken B.regain C.promote D.overlook
2、What’s the major concern of the scientists like Ove Guldberg?
A.People won’t find a dive de stination in the future.
B.The effort to save corals will turn out to be fruitless.
C.The destruction of coral reefs will affect the earth ecosystem.
D.The bright sea has lost its charm because of those dead corals.
3、The fourth paragraph is mainly about ___________.
A.the harm of algae B.the process of “bleaching”
C.the importance of coral reefs D.the change of ocean temperature
4、Ruth Gates’ attitude towards the protection of corals is ___________.
A.proud B.cautious C.optimistic D.casual
23.(8分)Oxford and Cambridge have now decided to remove the words CAN'T and IMPOSSIBLE from their dictionary. Jessica Cox, born in 1983, in Arizona, is the world’s first licensed armless pilot.
The girl from Tucson, Arizona got the Sport Pilot certificate lately and became the first pilot licensed to fly using only her feet. Jessica Cox was born without arms, but that has only stopped her from doing one thing: using the word "can't."
Cox graduated from the University of Arizona in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in communications. Cox has not used prosthetic arms since she turned 14. Using her feet as most people use their hands, she is able, among other things, to drive an unmodified car with an unrestricted license, to type on a keyboard at 25 words per minute, and to put in and remove her contact lenses.
Jessica Cox flew in a single engine airplane for the first time via Wright Flight in 2005. Cox earned her pilot’s certificate on October 10, 2008 after three years of training and is qualified to fly a light-sport aircraft to altitude of 10,000 feet.
“She's a good pilot. She's rock solid,” said Parrish Traweek, 42, the flying instructor at San Manuel's Ray Blair Airport. Parrish Traweek runs PC Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Services and has trained many pilots, some of whom didn't come close to Cox's abilities.
Doctors never learned why she was born without arms, but she figured out early that she didn't want to use prosthetic devices. So, the next time you are ready to tell yourself, "I can't possibly..." remember this amazing young woman and change your vocabulary.

25.(10分)The year 3700, Earth is far too hot for any human to call it home. On this planet at least, man is nothing
more than a memory--if there is anything left to remember the "wise man". But what about our wisdom--will any of it survive us?
The conventional answer is no. Knowledge requires a knower, and there will be no knowing minds around then. But if information survives, perhaps in books or hard drives, maybe the knowledge isn't quite dead but dormant(休眠), ready to become alive with the help of other minds that develop over time or come to visit Earth in the distant future.
At first sight, that seems to be reasonable: after all, we have done similar things with past knowledge. For example, we saved an ancient computer from a ship destroyed at sea off the southern coast of Greece, and succeeded in finding the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphics(象形文字). Careful work can bring previously lost wisdom back to life.
However, the key point is that there is a certain cultural continuity with those ancient times that allows us to reason and make progress in the dark: we know we are dealing with the legacy(遗产)of other humans. Without that link, the survival of objects and raw data doesn't guarantee the survival of knowledge. And a lack of continuity in language with any future intelligence would be a barrier. Knowledge is closely connected with language. When a language dies out, we can lose systems of reasoning that they contain. If that's lost, then it can't be recovered.
All this means that other minds might not be able to fully make human knowledge alive when we are gone. It is better to concentrate on not dying out in the first place.
1、How many opinions are mentioned in Para.2?
A.One.

A.Making lost wisdom alive again.
B.Rescuing disappearing knowledge.

D.Gaining new knowledge.
3、How can we make knowledge survive?
A.We know a lot about human beings.
B.We learn ways to draw conclusions.
C.We have a certain cultural continuity.
D.We protect the legacy of other humans.
4、What's mainly talked about in the text?
A.Can human beings live on?
B.Will our knowledge survive us?
C.What will the earth be like in the future?
D.How can we protect our culture?
