If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that one’s memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a
good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is really his own fault. Not all of us can become very strong or very clever, but all of us can improve our memory by the same means — practice.
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have a better memory than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because people who can’t read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is exercised all the time.
So if you want a good memory, learn from those who cannot read or write: practise remembering. 59.According to the passage, few people know that _____.
A. arms or legs become weak if they are not used for some time
B. when they start using their arms or legs again, they slowly become strong again

There is a wonderful story about a young girl who had no family and no one to love her.
One day, feeling very sad and lonely, she was walking through a grassland when she noticed a small butterfly caught in a thorn〔荆棘〕bush. The young girl carefully released the butterfly. Instead of flying away, the little butterfly changed into a beautiful fairy. The young girl rubbed her eyes in disbelief.
“For your wonderful kindness,〞the good fairy said to the girl, “I will give you any wish you would like.〞The little girl thought for a moment and then replied, “I w ant to be happy.〞 The fairy leaned toward her and whispered in her ear. Then the fairy disappeared.
As the little girl grew up, there was no one in the land as happy as she. Everyone asked her secret of happiness. She would only smile and answer, “The secret of my happiness is that I listened to a good fairy when I was a little girl.〞
When she was very old and on her deathbed, the neighbors all gathered around her, that her unbelievable secret of happiness would die with her. “Tell us, please,〞 the y begged, “Tell us what the good fairy said.〞The lovely old woman simply smiled and said, “She told me that everyone, no matter how secure they seemed, no matter how old or young, how rich or poor, had need of me.〞

Speak, speak, speak!
Practise speaking as often as you can. Speaking to yourself is good practice.
Try recording yourself whenever you can.
Compare your pronunciation with the master version〔原〕to see how you can do better and have another go. If you do this several times, you will find that each time is better than last. Why not learn with someone else?
It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working.
Don't get stuck by a word you don't know.
Practise improving ways of getting your meaning across when speaking spontaneously〔本能地〕,even if you don't know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say whenever
you have spare time. Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to make yourself understood. Language learning is also about intuition〔直觉〕.
Guesswork is an important way to learn a new language. When listening to recorded material, you aren't expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time.
Build up your vocabulary.
A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don’t try to learn too much at once. It’s best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take at most six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, and then come back to them later.
And above all, have fun!
67. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To tell us the importance of practicing speaking as often as we can.
B. To tell us a few tips to help us learn a new language well.
C. To tell us that guesswork is an important way to learn a new language.
D. To tell us that a wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning.
68. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase in the first part?
A. Have another try or attempt.
B. Move away from a place to another.
C. Enter a certain state or condition.
D. Follow or take a certain course.
70. According to the passage, to learn a new language well, the most important thing is ______.
A. speaking as much as possible
B. having fun
C. a wide vocabulary
D. guesswork

作文
Dear Simon,
I have received your letter about asking me for the advice about learning English. Now I’d like to tell you how you should learn English.
First of all, you should often read English aloud and try to learn something important by heart, which helps you to remember them easily and form a good habit of thinking in English. Besides, you should listen a lot and communicate with others in English. In this way, you will improve both your listening ability and your spoken English as well. What’s more, you should keep a diary in English every day and your written English will come better and better.
I hope what I’ve said is useful to you. I’m looking forward to your good news.
Best wishes.

W:Hi.
M:Hi, Linda.
W:How are you getting on?
M: Oh, not bad. Say, I was just wondering whether you’d like to go swimming with me this Saturday afternoon.
W: Oh, I’d like to. But I’m afraid I can’t. I have to attend a meeting.
M: Oh, that’s too bad.
W: But I’ll be free in the evening.
M: Shall we go to see a film
Text 8
W: Hi, John, I haven’t seen you for weeks.
M: Oh, hi, Kate. I have been studying a lot for my final exam.
W: Well, the term is almost over now.
M: Yes. My brother is coming to visit for the summer and we’d like to see some of the country. But traveling is too expensive.
W: Have you thought about camping?
M: Camping? I’ve never done that.
W: I think you’ll really like it. It’s much cheaper than staying in a hotel. And being closer to nature is a good way to forget about school for a while.
M: What a good idea! We can go by bike until we find a nice place and just camp wherever we like.
W: Well, not exactly. You are only allowed to camp in certain places. But there are many national park, state park and even village camping grounds around the country.
M: Sounds great! Here’s my bus. I’ll talk to you about this again.
Text 9
W: Welcome back, my dear. I missed you.
M: I missed you, too. It’ s good to be home.
W: I got the E-mail you sent. It sounds like you had a good time in Italy.
M: I had a great time. I visited some old friends. Everything went pleasantly.
W: What was the best part of your holiday?
M: Being with my relatives. They are really kind people. It’s too bad that you couldn’t go with me.
W: I know. But I’m sure I can go with you next time. I want very much to see your parents, too. You can translate my native language Chinese into Italian when I’m with them.
M: No problem. We can also bring our daughter with us. She will return from America by then.
Text 10
OK, everyone. May I please have your attention? I’m Bill Smith, the director of the school play for this year. It’s a great pleasure to have you as assistants to help organize the play. I’m sending around a form for you to put down some information on how we can get in touch with you, so please put your names and phone numbers down. Also please write down the performances that you will be able to help with. I realize that not everyone can come to each performance, but the more you attend, the better. However, you should also keep in mind that we will need a lot of time, and we may end up staying quite late into the evening.
If you have any special skills, it would be good for you to write those down on the paper as well. In particular, we need two lighting and sound people. We have hired one full-time lighting man , but one person can’ t do everything. We need several people to help out setting up the
lights.
Once you have all marked down any special skills you might have to offer, please return the form to me. At our next meeting on Tuesday, we’ll begin talking about all the different jobs. While you’ re waiting for the sheet to get passed around, I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you have today.。
