The batteries were in a radio collar worn by a male black bear in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. Wes Larson, a wildlife biologist at Brigham Young University who was figuring out how to reduce human-bear conflicts near backcountry campsites, had invited me along for a task, which was a little adventurous. On a cold and clear day in February, Wes, his brother Jeff, his assistant Jordan, and I were following the GPS coordinates from the bear's collar and went into a red earth canyon(峡谷)covered in high desert brush and freshly fallen snow. A weak radio signal led us to several empty dens (the home of wild animals). Then a curtain of snow collapsed, revealing a sandstone cave. It narrowed to a dark tunnel, and the sense of wild animals steamed from within. Armed with an expandable six-foot stick tipped with a tranquilizer syringe(镇静剂注射器), Wes dived in headfirst. His brother crawled after him. Thirty seconds later, they came flying backward out of the tunnel. The bear they'd collared a year and a half ago now weighed about 350 pounds—and he was awake. Wes had managed to stick him with the syringe, so we waited for the drug to take effect.
Then, on forearms and knees, I followed Wes, feeling only slightly more secure knowing that he'd be attacked before me if the bear charged. When we rounded the tunnel bend, wide eyes flashed at us. He was still awake. I quickly snapped the photo above. The bear started crawling toward us until I was forced out of the den. Jeff and Jordan leaped for his back paws, struggling to hold on to him; Wes jumped on his back and grabbed his collar. The tranquilizer had kicked in—he was asleep. Wes and his brother changed out the radio collar and checked his health.
When spring came, signals from the bear's new radio collar showed he'd continued his everyday life—avoiding any more contact, we hope, with humans.
(1)What directed the author to the home of the bear?
A Its horrible howling.
B The two local guides.
C The tracks in the fresh
snow. D The radio signal from the GPS.
(2)Why did Wes and his brother rush out of the tunnel?
A It was not the bear they looked for.
B The tranquilizer failed in the bear.
C They had to wait for the drug to take effect.
D The bear had grown too large to be recognized.
(3)What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A Why the bear didn't fall asleep deeply.
B How the author escaped the narrow death.
C What the bear focused on during the attack.
D How the four people managed to complete the task.
(4)What did the four people intend to do?
A Care for the sick bear.
B Change the radio collar on a bear.
C Record what a bear does in cold season.
D Remove the conflicts between humans and animals.

A new study conducted by North and his colleagues concluded that specific songs or music types could gradually lead certain concepts into a person's memory, eventually changing people's preferences and buying behavior. For example, playing German music might make consumers think of beer, while playing French music might bring about pictures of wine and the Eiffel Tower.
In one experiment, 120 Scottish college students were distributed to four rooms in a lab. In each of the three rooms one of three types of music-American, Chinese, Indian—was played continuously. The fourth room had no music. Participants were then given several minutes to read a menu with 30 different dishes representative of the cuisine of China, India, and America. Then they were asked to list as many of the menu dishes as they could before choosing one dish to order. Sure enough, people were more likely to select dishes that corresponded to the music they heard. For example, those who listened to the Beach Boys were more likely to order typically American foods such as hamburgers and hotdogs.
In another experiment, groups of 180 Scottish college students heard either classical music, country music, or no music while viewing slides of 10 social identity products like gold earrings and also 10 utilitarian(实用的)products like toothbrushes. After each slide, participants were asked to write down the top price they'd be willing to pay for each of the 20 products. The result was also consistent to North's suspect. For example, those listening to country music were prepared to pay more for utilitarian products than the participants in the other two groups, while those listening to classical music were willing to spend more on social identity products than the other participants.
While background music may not convince buyers to abandon their typical preferences, this study suggested that a little attention to details when selecting music could help shop keepers make a few more sales.
(1)In the first experiment, researchers wanted to know whether music affects people's ________.
A behavior
B future plan
C imagination
D food choice
(2)What type of music is the Beach Boys?
A French.
B Indian.
C American.
D Chinese.
(3)The second experiment was done to find out that music styles have effects on people's ________.
A desire for buying
B purchase intention
C attitude to a product's practical
use D opinion on a product's social function
(4)What is the best title for the text?
A Background music influences buying behavior
B Why background music helps to increase sales
C Music can instantly change consumers' preferences
D Why more attention should be paid to music time

The US National Park Service (NPS) today released news of the most recent wolf deaths, and the pattern is clear: Wolves relocated as a pack from Canada's Michipicoten Island Provincial Park have so far been more successful on Isle Royale National Park in Michigan's Lake Superior than wolves brought individually from either mainland Minnesota, Michigan, or Canada's Ontario Province. The Michipicoten wolves' origin as a bonded group was likely the key fact they have all survived so far in the new environment, says wildlife ecologist Rolf Peterson, who has studied Isle Royale wolves since 1971.
According to population ecologist Brent Patterson, the relocated US mainland wolves were considered healthy at the times they were moved to Isle Royale, but the circumstances of their deaths have all been different. One Minnesota male died of pneumonia(肺炎)shortly after being moved in fall 2018. The body of another male, from Ontario, was retrieved from mud in April. In September, two recently relocated females died. One from Michigan had an infection and wound from the leg trap used in her capture. "The second, from Minnesota, died from severe injuries after an attack by another wolf or wolves. NPS expected some wolf deaths, as well as wolf fights, or other random events to have an effect on the relocated animals.
The last male wolf of the intensely studied island-born population also died this fall. Its body was found on a hiking trail on 17 October. Eleven years old, it far outlived most wild wolves. National Wildlife Health Center in Madison noted broken ribs(肋骨), as well as several puncture(刺穿)wounds they attributed to wolf attack. "It is still a question in my mind what it actually died of," Peterson says, noting that wolf attacks don't usually break bones, although moose(驼鹿)kicks commonly do. He may get more answers as the frozen body arrives this week in Houghton.
(1)Which factor may influence wolf survival most according to Peterson?
A The population of a wolf pack.
B The place of the relocation.
C The species of the wolf pack.
D The physical size of the wolf.
(2)What does the underlined word "retrieved" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A Brought back.
B Brought up.
C Driven away.
D Taken over.
(3)What can we learn about the dead wolf found on 17 October?
A It is the last wolf born on the island.
B The broken ribs resulted in its death.
C It had been kicked by a moose before it died.
D The cause of its death needs further investigation.
(4)What is the main idea of the text?
A Relocated wolves are faced with new surviving challenges.
B A wolf pack moved from
Michipicoten survive relatively longer. C More researches are being done to help relocated wolves survive. D Moving wolves on a large scale to a new environment is not successful.

There was a rich person with two sons. The first son was hard working and always obeyed his father. But the second one was lazy and didn't work in his father's field. He was disobedient to his father.
One day, the younger son said to his father. "Father, give me my share of property." Feeling sad, he divided the property. The second son took his share and left home. He went to a distant land, where he made lots of friends. He spent his money generously on his friends. He had many bad habits too and wasted all the money. Soon his friends all deserted him.
At that time, there was a drought. He couldn't get any job. He was forced to take up a very mean job—feeding the pigs. Very often he ate the food kept for pigs. He was sad and began to think of his father and brother. He said to himself, "In my father's house, even the servants have enough food. I'll go back to my father. I'll beg him to take me as his servant."
So he set out for his father's house. In the meantime, his father was always missing his second son. He would sit near the windows and look out at the road, expecting his son to return home.
One day his father saw his son coming at a distance. He ran out of his house in great joy, He met his son on the way. His son knelt down. He said, "Father, I'm not fit to be your son. Take me as your servant."
His father hugged his son. He turned to his servants. He said, "Bring the best robe. Put it on my son. Put shoes on his feet. Prepare a dinner. Let us eat and enjoy. My son was lost. Now he is found."
The elder son was returning from his work. He heard the sound of the music and dancing from his house. He asked one of his servants about it. His servant told him, "Your brother has come. Your father is excited at his return. A fatted calf has been killed to prepare for the celebration."
