第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)What’s the point of studying? It’s something you might ask yourself if you’re studying for a degree and you’re struggling to complete homework or in an exam, especially if your friends seem to be out having a good time, or are working and earning lots of money.
Many of us choose to go to university as a first step towards a good career but sometimes that career is to go to
university as a first step towards a good career but sometimes that career is hard to achieve and graduates end up doing something they are overqualified for. With the increasing costs of university, students begin to ask themselves whether a degree path is the best route into a career, There is a need for much better career advice and guidance into employment in addition to university education.
But other new research says that a degree will in the long run, earn you more. However there are differences in your earning potential. Dr Jack Britton says that “graduates of the 24 Russell Group universities earn an average of £33,500 after five years - about 40% more than those who studied at other universities.”
However, it has found it’s not just the location but other factors that can play a part in what you can earn, such as the subject a student chooses to study. It discovered that five years after graduation, the income gap between students who studied the subjects that attract the highest and lowest salaries can be considerable. Graduates in subjects such as law, medicine, dentistry as well, tend to do well. And as they progress, the pay gap between these careers and others, such as the creative arts, widens. There are factors too that influence what you might earn: Five years after graduation, men earn on average 14% more than women. Also, a student’s social background can have an effect, with those from better-off household much more likely to go to university and particularly a good one.
But if you still feel university doesn’t deliver the best opportunities then there are encouraging words from Alistair Jarvis, head of universities UK, who told BBC News that “Employs are demanding more gradu ates and graduates are half as likely to be unemployed as likely to be unemployed as non-graduates. There are many good graduate outcomes coming from universities” So may all that studying is worth it-after all ‘no pain, no gain’!
1、Why do students start to question whether to go to university or not?
A.Because of the heavy studying burden.
B.Because they can’t get a degree after graduation.
C.Because they don’t need a degree for their career.
D.Because of the increasing costs of university.
2、Which major may most probably lead to a lower-earning career?
A.Medicine. B.Law.
C.Creative arts. D.Dentistry.
3、Which of the following is most likely to be fired according to Alistair Jarvis?
A.Graduates. B.Non-graduates.
C.Doctors. D.Employers.
4、What can be inferred from this passage?
A.Russell Group universities are top ones.
B.Most students go to university to get a good career.
C.One’s location has no effect on his income.
D.Graduates often have more academic qualifications than required for a particular job.
22.(8分)The Mokoko tribe (部落) lived on the wrong side of the island of two faces. The two sides, separated by a great cliff (悬崖), were like night and day. The good side was watered by rivers and was filled with trees and abundant food, while on the wrong side there was hardly any water or plants, and wild beasts crowded together. The Mokoko had the misfortune of having always lived there, with no way to cross to the other side. Their life was hard and they lived in permanent terror of the beasts.
Along the edge of the cliff separating the two sides, a skinny but strong tree grew, with which they could build two poles. There was no doubt that the tribe would choose the great chief and doctor to use the poles. But when the two of them were given their chance to mak e the jump, they didn’t dare to. They thought that the pole could break or it would not be long enough. They put so much energy into these thoughts that they gave in.
But into that tribe were born Nam and Ariki, a pair of young hearts. One day, they decided to take up the poles. Nobody stopped them, but everyone did try to discourage them, trying to present how dangerous the jumping was, using a thousand explanations.
“And what if what they say is true?” wondered the young Naru.
“Don’t worry. I am a bit scared too, but it doesn’t look so difficult,” replied Ariki, ever determined.
“But if it goes wrong, it will be a terrible end,” continued Naru, undecided.
“Perhaps the jump will go badly. But staying forever on this side of the island surely won’t work out well either.”
“You’re right. Let’s do it tomorrow.”
And on the next day, Naru and Ariki jumped to the good side of the island. When taking up the poles, while feeling their desire, the fear hardly allowed them to breathe. And while flying through the air, helpless and without support, they felt that something must have gone wrong and death awaited them. But when they landed on the other side, they thought the jump really hadn’t been so bad after all.
1、What situation were the Mokoko faced with?
A.They lived a difficult life without fearing the beasts.
B.They suffered a lot due to the terrible environment.
C.They had easy access to the good side.
D.They were surrounded by trees and rivers.
2、How did the chief and doctor feel when they were chosen?
A.Frightened. B.Energetic.
C.Desperate. D.Satisfied.
3、What’s the tribe members’ reaction when Nam and Ariki decided to take up the poles?
A.The members desired to follow their steps.
B.The members tried to prevent the behaviour.
C.The members convinced them of the danger.
D.The members encouraged them to have a try.
4、What can we infer about Naru and Ariki?
A.They overcame difficulty with courage and determination.
B.They felt relaxed in the whole process of making the jump.
C.They never doubted the difficulty in making the jump.
D.They hesitated to make the jump over and over again.
23.(8分)Resorts of every kind have sprung up to cater to the Englishman^ need to spend a part of the year, however briefly, by the seaside. No town in Britain is more than eighty miles from the sea and there are seaside resorts all round the coast. On a summer Sunday most of the roads that lead to the sea axe congested with cars full of people eager to get a breath of sea air. In the evening when everyone is full of food, ice-cream and lollypops, there is the long slow drive home on roads crowded with returning cars.
Brighton
Brighton is one of the best-known south coast resorts and is very popular for day trip excursions. It is only fifty miles from London and can be reached by fast train in an hour. At the weekend the pebbled beaches are thronged with people sunbathing or picking their way to the water’s edge for a dip.
Bournemouth
Located a hundred miles from London, the beaches are wide and sandy. White houses line the cliff tops and narrow valleys, densely wooded with pine trees, reach down to the shore. The area near to the town of Torquay on the Devon coast is sometimes called Britains Riviera and the climate is so mild that palm trees grow along the sea front. Blackpool
On the north-west coast, a popular resort for the people in the industrial north, Blackpool is a gay, noisy town, famous for its amusement facilities and the magical lights. At night people travel from miles around to see the extravaganza of lights decorating the sea front.
Southend
On the east coast at the mouth of the Thames, Southend is, like Brighton, one of the favorite resorts of Londoners. The pier here is the longest in Britain and offers a great variety of differing entertainments.
1、Why do people often have a long slow drive home on roads in summer?
A.Because it is extremely far from the sea.
B.Because people are full of food, ice-cream and lollypops.
C.Because too many returning cars often make a traffic jam.
D.Because people are attracted in the resorts so they leave slowly.
2、Which resort is famous for its entertainments and grand lights?
A.Blackpool. B.Bournemouth.
C.Briton. D.Southend.
3、Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.There are palm trees growing near Bournemouth.
B.Southend has the longest pier in Britain.
C.People crowded into the water’s edge at Briton for a quick swim.
D.Southend is a better preferred resort than Briton by London locals.
24.(8分)People tend to accept groups standards of behavior and thinking in a group work. Many illustrations(例证) could be given of this from everyday life, but what is of particular interest to psychologists is how much people’s judgments and opinions can be changed as a result of group pressure. Asch and others noticed that people in a group will agree to statements that are contrary to the evidence of their senses. It would be a mistake to think that only particular changeable people are chosen to take part in experiments of this type. Usually highly intelligent and independent people are used.
In a typical experiment, this is what may happen. The experimenter asks for volunteers to join a group which is investigating visual sense. The participants are not, therefore, aware of the real purpose of the experiment. Each volunteer is taken to a room where he finds a group of about seven people who are cooperating with the experimenter. The group is shown a standard card which contains a single line. They are then asked to look at a second card. This has three lines on it. One is obviously longer than the line on the first card. One is shorter and one the same length. They have to say which line on the second card is the same length as the line on the standard card. The other members of the group answer first but what the volunteer does not know is that they have been told to pick one of the wrong lines. When his turn comes he is faced with the consistent opinion of the rest of the group—all the others have chosen line A but he quite clearly sees line B as correct.
What will he do? According to Asch, more than half of the victims chosen will change their opinion. What is equally surprising is that, when interviewed about their answers, most explained that they know the group choice was incorrect but that they yield to the pressure of the group because they thought they must be suffering from an optical illusion(视
觉假象), or because they were afraid of being different.
1、The psychologists are especially interested in ________.
A.the evidence of the experiment. B.the changes in the attitudes of people.
C.th e difference in people’s behavior D.the degree of changes of people’s opinions
2、Why more than half of the victims changes their opinions in the experiment?
A.Because they had been told about the answer.
B.Because thought the group choice was correct.
C.Because they submitted to the group pressure.
D.Because their eyes were suffering from illusion.
3、The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to ________.
A.illustrate the influence of group pressure on individuals
B.encourage people to act against any groups opinion
C.invite more volunteers to join in Asch's experiment
D.tell the readers how to perform psychological experiment
25.(10分)The dangers of sitting all day are obvious. Researchers have shown that remaining sitting for extended periods of time (like at your 9-to-5 desk job) can do harm to your health. While exercise is a big part of reducing the harmful effects of sitting, it was unclear how many gym periods were needed to help – until now.
A new study, published in The Lancet, shows the ideal formula for reducing the negative effects of a sedentary(久坐的)job. Instead of a fixed number of hours spent exercising, the ratio(比率)depends on how much you sit: people who work a typical eight-hour day should spend at least one hour each day moving. If you sit six hours a day, you should spend half an hour exercising. The research also indicates that the exercise doesn’t have to be all once – or rigorous(严格的). It can be spread throughout the day and be as simple as walking.
The team behind the study analyzed data from a pool of a million adults over the age of 45 in Western Europe, the United States, and Australia. Using previous data, the researches examined data from 16 published studies and used it to determine how much exercise is required to compensate for sitting. Their recommended daily exercise goal is higher than previous advice but not necessarily less achievable, given it can be completed throughout the day.
Fitting in an hour of exercise a day sounds especially discouraging if you have a desk job, but there are plenty of workouts you can complete before and after work. Even if it means taking a 10-minute walk during lunch, your body will thank you in the long run.
1、The underlined words “compensate for” can be best replaced by ________.
A.make up for B.break away from
C.give up D.take the place of
2、According to the new study, good news for the people working long hours at desk
is that ________.
A.workouts may reduce the harm of sitting for long
B.the harm of sitting for long has been proved
C.they don’t have to exercise as long as suggested previously
D.the time spent on exercise is flexible
3、What can be inferred from the article?
A.The best form of workouts is walking.
B.The longer you exercise, the better.
C.The new exercise goal is practical though higher.
D.A desk job makes it impossible to exercise regularly.
4、The second paragraph is developed mainly ________.
A.by example B.by process
C.by comparison D.by contrast

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear classmates,
It is my honor to be here and share with you my idea on this topic. President Xi delivered a speech with a topic “Never forget why we started, and we can accomplish our mission.”
While reading it, I keep thinking about my original aspiration—to learn all the necessary knowledge and skills to study in my dream university. With knowledge and skills acquired in such a university, I will play a more active and visible role in contributing to my country, making it better.
I know there’s still a long way to go before realizing my aspiration. But I will follow my teachers’ Instructions, and never give up when confronted with discouraging setbacks and obstacles.
I hope we can remain true to our original aspirations to get what we want in the end.
Thank you!。
