My Best Friend Got Into Peking University!
I'm so excited, I can hardly sit still to write this! My very best friend in the whole wide world, Zhi Hua, just found out he got accepted to the awesome Peking University in Beijing! I'm jumping up and down with joy for him. Getting into that school is really, really hard. He must be one of the smartest kids in our whole city to get in there!
Peking University is the best university in all of China. My teacher Mrs. Wang says it's one of the best in the entire world too! She told us that super brainy people like the writer Lu Xun and the great leader Mao Zedong both went there. Just thinking about walking the same hallways as remarkable people like that makes my head spin.
I still remember the day Zhi Hua told me he was going to try to get into Peking University after we graduate from Shen Li Elementary School next year. We were swinging on the rusty old swing set during recess, seeing who could go the highest. Zhi
Hua suddenly said, "Jin Hai, I've decided I want to go to Peking University in Beijing after middle school. It's the best university for studying science and math."
I nearly fell off my swing in shock. "Peking University? In the capital city? But that's like, the hardest school to get into ever! Only the smartest kids go there."
Zhi Hua grinned at me. "Yep, that's the one! And I'm going to be one of those smart kids. I'm going to study harder than anyone and get perfect scores on the exams to get in."
I knew he was brilliant, top of our class in every subject. But Peking University was a whole other level. I just gaped at him. "You think you can really get in there?"
He nodded confidently. "I know I can do it if I work hard enough. My parents said they'll support me no matter what. Wait and see, I'll blow those entrance exams away!"
Well, Zhi Hua wasn't just talking big. He really did start studying like crazy after that, way more than me or any of our other friends. He would come to school early to study in the library before class. He would skip playing games at recess to review his lessons. And after school, while I was watching TV shows and playing sports, Zhi Hua would hit the books for
several more hours every night. Weekends too - you could always find him with his nose buried in a stack of thick books.
Everybody started calling him "The Study Machine" because he hardly ever stopped studying. I felt kinda bad for him missing out on all the fun. But he just stayed focused, saying "Getting into Peking is fun for me."
His crazy hard work definitely paid off with incredibly high test scores. By the final year of middle school, it was obvious that Zhi Hua was one of the top students nationwide. He aced the intense entrance exam for Peking University too.
I remember he was speechless with joy when he ripped open the acceptance letter. He just turned to me with the biggest grin I've ever seen and wordlessly held up the letter. I gave him a huge high five and cheered loudly enough for the whole city to hear!
Now my best buddy is off to live in the iconic capital city of Beijing to attend the prestigious university of his dreams. I'm going to miss him so much. But I'm even more excited for this new amazing adventure he gets to experience.
Beijing is such an incredible, world-famous city that everyone has heard about. Getting to live and study there is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Zhi Hua will get to walk the same historic streets as ancient emperors. He'll see incredible sights like the mind-blowing Forbidden City palace, the iconic Tiananmen Square, the stunning Summer Palace, and the majestic Great Wall of China.
His life on the campus of Peking University is going to be just as awesome. The grounds are like a beautiful park filled with ancient buildings, gardens, and calm courtyards. His classes will take place in halls that were built long before our
great-grandparents were even born! He'll study under professors who are world experts in their fields. Geniuses from all over China and the world go there to learn.
I know Zhi Hua is going to thrive in that environment of academic excellence. I just hope all his ridiculous studying doesn't make him miss out on the fun of experiencing Beijing too! He better take breaks to go exploring the wonders of that

My Best Friend Got Into Peking University!
Wow, I can't believe my best friend Jerry got into Peking University! That's like the best university in all of China. When he
told me the news, I was so excited I jumped up and down until my mom told me to calm down before I broke something.
Jerry and I have been best friends since we were tiny kids in kindergarten. We became friends on the very first day when the teacher made us sit next to each other. Jerry had this really cool Transformers lunchbox and I was super jealous. During snack time, I tried to steal a cookie from his lunchbox when he wasn't looking. But he caught me and instead of getting mad, he just laughed and shared the cookie with me. From that day on, we were inseparable.
We did everything together growing up. We played on the same soccer team, went to each other's birthday parties, and even took the same Chinese language classes after school. Whenever we had a test coming up, we would study together at Jerry's house. His mom would make us delicious dumplings as a study snack. Jerry was always better at math than me, but I helped him with English. We made a great team!
In middle school, things started getting harder with more homework and tests. A lot of kids got really competitive about getting good grades to try to get into an elite high school. But Jerry and I supported each other. We never let the pressure of
academics come between our friendship. We just kept working hard and having funlike when we were little kids.
I remember the summer before high school, Jerry and I spent practically every day together playing basketball, riding our bikes, and swimming at the pool. We made so many awesome memories. At night, we would lie on the grass and look at the stars, talking about our dreams for the future. Jerry always said he wanted to go to Peking University and become a scientist who discovers a cure for cancer or something. I wanted to be a artist or writer.
When we started high school, things got even more intense with the dreaded gaokao college entrance exam looming in the distance. Jerry and I both put our heads down and focused intensely on our studies. We went to separate high schools since Jerry got into the top one in the city. I was a little sad we wouldn't be at the same school anymore, but we promised to still hang out as much as possible.
The high school years flew by in a blur of classes, homework, exam prep, and the occasional weekend hanging out together playing video games or watching movies. Before we knew it, it was senior year and time to take the life-changing gaokao. I was so nervous, but Jerry helped me stay calm and focused during
our study sessions. He really was the best study partner anyone could ask for.
Finally, the day came to take the gaokao. It was the most stressful few days of my entire life so far. When it was all over, Jerry and I just collapsed from exhaustion and went to the park to chill out. We got ice cream cones and just tried not to think about the exam for a while. We both felt we had done pretty well, but you never know for sure with the crazy competition.
A couple months later, the results came out online. I was at Jerry's house and we both logged in at the same time to find out our scores and where we got into college. I was shaking I was so nervous. The website finally loaded and there it was - Jerry got into Peking University! We both started cheering and jumping around like idiots. I was genuinely so happy for my best friend, he worked so hard and totally deserved it. Sure, I was a little sad we wouldn't be going to the same college, but I knew Jerry was going to achieve big things.
When I saw my own results, I got into a pretty good university too, just not as prestigious as Peking. But I didn't even care in that moment, I was just so stoked for Jerry. His parents took us all out to a fancy dinner at a restaurant to celebrate. The whole night, Jerry couldn't stop smiling. He just kept saying he
couldn't believe his dream of getting into Peking was actually coming true after all those years.
This fall, Jerry will be moving into the dorms at Peking University while I'll be staying closer to home for college. I'm definitely going to miss having him around all the time. But you know what they say - true friends can stay close no matter the distance. And there's no one I consider a better or closer friend than Jerry. We've been through so much together ever since we were little kids. I know he's going to do amazing things at Peking and beyond.
My smart, hardworking, humble, kind-hearted best friend is Peking University bound! He deserves every bit of this accomplishment. I'm just so proud of him and happy that one of the good guys made it. I can't wait to see what incredible things Jerry goes on to do in the future. Maybe he really will discover a cure for cancer or something. With his brilliant mind and willpower, anything is possible.
No matter where life takes us, Jerry will always be mybestie. And whenever I think of him studying away at the amazing Peking University campus, I'll smile knowing that kid who shared his snack cookie with me all those years ago is well on his way to changing the world. Congratulations Jerry, you earned this!

My Best Friend Got into Peking University!
Wow! I can't believe my best friend Jingfei got accepted to the super famous Peking University! That's like the Harvard or Oxford of China. When we were little kids playing together in kindergarten, I never imagined he would get into such an incredible school. But I'm not really surprised either, because Jingfei has always been the smartest kid I know.
I still remember the first day I met Jingfei back in kindergarten. It was during free play time and I was having trouble building a tower with the big plastic blocks. No matter how carefully I stacked them, my tower would always wobble and fall over after a few blocks. But then Jingfei came over and in his quiet little voice said "You're supposed to make it narrower towards the top. Like a pyramid." He took a few blocks and within seconds had built a sturdy tower that was much taller than any I'd made. From that day on, we became best buddies.
In elementary school, Jingfei and I were inseparable. We sat together in class, played basket ball at recess, and hadsleepovers at each other's houses on the weekends. Whenever I struggled with my schoolwork, like those dreaded math word problems,
Jingfei would patiently talk me through it until I understood. He was always happy to help anyone who asked. Sometimes I think he liked being the smart kid that everyone came to for help and explanations.
Jingfei never seemed to struggle with anything academic though. He would casually raise his hand in class and give these long, perfect explanations that made even the teacher look impressed. Getting perfect scores on tests was normal for him. The rest of us had to study hard just to keep up. I remember asking him once if he even had to study or if it all just came naturally to his big brain. He just shrugged and said "I don't know, I just understand things the first time usually." What a genius!
In middle school, Jingfei joined the math team, the science club, and the robotics club. He seemed to have an endless thirst for knowledge and was always reading books about Einstein's theories, black holes, computer coding, you name it. Anything complex and academic, he just soaked it right up. Meanwhile I was still struggling with pre-algebra and reading comic books about talking animals on summer vacation. Pretty different levels!
Jingfei never looked down on the rest of us for not being as smart though. He was unfailingly humble and kind. I think that's part of what made him such a good student - he was always eager to learn more without acting like he was better than everyone else. Just a real nice, down-to-earth guy who happened to be a total brainiac too.
When we started applying to high schools, I figured Jingfei would get into the best one in the city easily. Sure enough, he scored off the charts on the entrance exam and got into Beijing's top high school for gifted students. I decided to go to the normal public high school in our neighborhood. It felt a little sad drifting apart from my best friend academically like that, but I knew our friendship was strong enough to stay close.
This past year, Jingfei's laser-focus has been on getting into a great university. He spent months working on entrance essays, preparing for interviews, and drilling practice tests. I could see how much it meant to him to go to a prestigious school. We both knew Peking University was his dream, but also the biggest reach considering how few students they accept annually.
When the acceptance letters came out a few weeks ago, Jingfei texted me right away - "I got in" He sounded just as shocked and thrilled as if he'd won the lottery. I was so happy for
him, too. Nobody deserves it more than Jingfei after all his years of hard work and commitment to academics. His parents must be walking on clouds with pride.
At the same time, I know Jingfei isn't the type to ever big himself up or brag. When we talked on the phone that night, he kept saying things like "I honestly never thought I'd get in" and "There were so many other qualified applicants." So humble and modest as always, my genius friend. I had to keep reminding him "Of course you got in, dummy! You're the smartest person I know!"
Jingfei getting into Peking University feels sort of like when your friend gets drafted into the major leagues or becomes a celebrity. You're absolutely thrilled for them and know they have what it takes to shine on the big stage. But there's also a tiny pang of realizing your friend is flying off towards rarefied air that you can't breathe. Our friendship isn't going to change - we'll still be Jingfei and Bao no matter what. But he's stepping into a whole new world of academic elite that I can't really relate to.
I think back to us being those little boys playing with blocks and cars, with no concept yet of how different our lives would eventually become. Part of me wishes I could freeze time and stay in those blissfully ignorant kiddy days forever with my best
pal. No separating onto diverging paths, just two buddies hanging out and nothing else to worry about.
Of course, that's not how life works though. People grow up, circumstances change, talents get cultivated or squandered. Jingfei getting into an academic powerhouse like Peking University is the first step on what I'm sure will be an extraordinary journey. Wherever his brilliant mind takes him - curing diseases, making revolutionary scientific discoveries, teaching at a prestigious university himself someday - I have zero doubt he'll achieve great things.
As for me, I'm happy to be Jingfei's low-key friend cheering him on from the sidelines. The dude who still struggles with higher math from time to time but gets to be inspired by his humble best friend's example. I may never stride the hallowed halls of Peking University, but I get to be eternally proud of the kid from our neighborhood who will.
So kudos to you, Jingfei - my oldest friend, my academic idol, the first bona fide genius I've ever known. Getting into Peking University is just the start of amazing things ahead of you. Just don't forget all about us regular folk, okay? Come back and kick it with your buddies in the neighborhood sometime between
shattering globalaqchievements and rewriting the laws of physics!。
