To ward off this ferocious creature, people would hang red decorations, set off firecrackers, and light bonfires to scare it away. Over time, these customs evolved into the traditions we now associate with Chinese New Year.
Another popular legend is the story of the monster-slaying hero named "Nian," who saved a village from the terror of the beast by using his wit and bravery. To commemorate this event, people started celebrating the New Year with festive activities, including lion dances, dragon parades, and family reunions.
The Chinese New Year falls on the first day of the lunar calendar, typically between late January and mid-February, marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It is a time for families to come together, honor their ancestors, and wish each other prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.
Traditionally, preparations for Chinese New Year begin weeks in advance, with thorough cleaning of homes to sweep away any bad luck and make way for good fortune. People also buy new clothes, decorate their houses with red lanterns and couplets, and stock up on festive foods for the celebratory feasts.
The New Year's Eve dinner, known as the "reunion dinner," is the most important meal of the year, where families gather to enjoy sumptuous dishes symbolizing prosperity and happiness. Dumplings, fish, spring rolls, and sweet rice cakes are some of the traditional delicacies served during this festive occasion.
On New Year's Day, people visit temples to pray for blessings, exchange red envelopes containing money as a symbol
of good luck, and watch colorful parades featuring lion and dragon dances, as well as fireworks displays.
