One day, I received a call from a colleague. He was about to give a student a zero for his answer to a physical problem, while the student claimed a perfect score. I was elected as their arbiter(仲裁人). I read the examination problem:"Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer(气压计). ”The student had answered; "Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower it to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of it is the height of the building.”
The student had really answered the question completely, but the answer didn't confirm his competence in physics. I suggested the student try again. I gave him six minutes to answer the question, warning that the answer should show some knowledge of physics. Five minutes later, he said he had many answers and dashed off one, which read:“Take the barometer to the top of the building and lean over the edge of the roof. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, use the physical formula(公式)to calculate the height of the building.”
At this point, my colleague had to accept it, and then the student made almost full marks. I couldn't help asking the student what the other answers were. He listed many others, and then added, "Probably the best is to take the barometer to the administrator and said to him, ‘Sir, here is a fine barometer. If you tell me the height of the building, I will give it to you.”, Then, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school and college instructors trying to teach him how to think.

Americans are buying more products and services than ever before through the Internet. And experts say the popularity of online sales is likely to spread to other countries. Online sales now represent as much as 10% of all retail sales in the United States. This has led traditional stores to seek new ways to keep their customers loyal.
Lynne used the Internet to buy everything she needed for her wedding and holiday gifts for her husband and stepdaughter. Other than food, 90% of her purchases were made on her home computer. “I find that, by being able to go online and choose the things that I need, and have them delivered to me right at my doorstep, I eliminate all the driving , all the crowds, all the noise of that, and I usually get a better selection.”
There are a lot of people like her. Experts say American online shopping hit records in both November and December. 57% of Americans have bought something electronically. Store owners worry that this growing amount of online sales will hurt their business. Cornell University marketing professor Ed Melaughlin says they can keep their customers by selling goods like clothing, which buyers may want to see and try on before purchasing. The stores could also offer things that are difficult to ship. Besides, some stores can please customers by offering to repair electronic products.
Bill Martin is the founder of Shopper Trak. His business helps stores learn about their customers. He said, “There is still a lot of emotion in the buying decision, you know, that takes place. Often you n eed that last sense of ‘Boy, this is exactly what I want’ before you are ready to part with money, and you can’t always get that online. It’s a rather cold process.”
While e-commerce worries some business owners, the only worry for delivery services is keeping up with the number of packages. UPS manager Dana Kline says her company is very busy at this time of year. UPS is so busy that it has filled 55,000 temporary work positions during the holiday season.
40. The example of Lynne is mentioned in the passage to show_____.

43. The purpose of this passage is to tell us _____

All around the world, shoppers flock to Wal-Mart to buy everything. In Texas, they come for another reason: to see the wind turbine (涡轮机), which supplies 5% of the store's electricity. It along with other facilities, such as exterior walls coated with heat-reflective paint, makes this Wal-Mart a green giant.
The laws of economics suggest that Wal-Mart, with 5, 200 stores worldwide, influences everything including the price of all kinds of goods. It throws its weight behind environmental responsibility, and the impact could be amazing."One little change in product packaging could save 1, 500 trees," says Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott."If everybody saves 1, 500 trees or 50 barrels of oil, at the end of the day you have made a huge difference."
Scott wants Wal-Mart to do its part too.He has promised to cut the existing greenhouse-gas emissions (排放)over the next few years and promised to construct new stores that are more efficient. He wants Wal-Mart's fleet (车队)of more than 7, 000 trucks to get twice as many miles per gallon by 2015.Factories that show Wal-Mart they're cutting air pollution will get preferential treatment in the supply chain.Wal-Mart says it's working with consumer-product manufacturers to reduce their packaging and will reward them if they do so.Some people may doubt it is a bid to attract attention from Wal-Mart's controversial labor and health-insurance practices. But it's not just window dressing, because Wal-Mart sees profits in going green.Scott says, "This is a business philosophy, not a social philosophy. We don't go where we don't think there's a great interest in change."
Like Bill Gates, who started his charitable foundation, Scott happens to be promoting Wal-Mart's image at a time when his company's reputation is declining. He acknowledges that he launched the plan partly to shield (保护,庇护)Wal-Mart from bad press about its contribution to global warming." By doing what we're doing today, we avoid the headline risks that are going to come for people who did not do anything," he says."At some point businesses will be held responsible for the actions they take." Meanwhile, should Wal-Mart succeed at shrinking its environmental footprint and lowering prices for green products, both the planet and the company will profit.

A.Lee Scott is Wal-Mart's CEO

The UK’s education system is ranked sixth best in the developed world, according to a global league table published by education firm Pearson.
The first and second places are taken by Finland and South Korea.
The rankings combine international test results and data such as graduation rates between 2006 and 2010.
Sir Michael Barber, Pearson’s chief education adviser, says suc cessful countries give teachers a high status and have a “culture” of education.
International comparison in education have become increasingly significant and this latest league table is based upon a series of global test results combined with measures of education systems, such as how many people go on to university.
The two education superpower s Finland and South Korea are followed by three other high-performing Asian education systems Hong Kong , Japan and Singapore.
The UK is then ranked at the head of an above-average group including the Netherlands, Canada and Ireland.
These are ahead of a middle-ranking group including the United States, Germany and France.
At the lowest end and Mexico, Brazil and Indonesia.
These comparison draw upon tests that are taken every three or four years, in areas such as maths, science and literacy and so present a picture lagging(滞后)by several years.
Looking at education systems that succeed, the study concludes that spending is important, but not as much as having a culture that is supportive of learning. It says that spending is easier to measure, but the more complex impact of a society’s attitude to education can make a big difference.
“The success of Asian countries in these rankings reflects the high value att ached to education and the expectations of parents. This can continue to be a factor when families migrate
to other countries,” says the report.
Looking at the two top countries Finland and South Korea, the report says that there are many big differences, but the common factor is a shared social belief in the importance of education and its “underlying moral purpose”
48.According to the passage, we can infer the news was likely to be published in a newspaper of
_____.
A. UK
B. Finland
C. South Korea
D. Japan
49. The rankings are based on the following EXCEPT______.
A. a series of global test results
B. the number of people in university
C. graduation rates
D. the number of teachers
50.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The UK’s education system is out of date.
B. The education in Asia is better than that in Europe
C. The latest global league table published by education firm Pearson.
D. The situation of the world education.

Dear classmates
It’s a pleasure for me to have a chance to make a short speech today. Recently, I have found that some of our classmates study late into the night and do not spare any time to take a rest during the day either, but they often cannot help falling asleep in class. And some classmates seldom have breakfast, which is also a bad habit and will surely do harm to their health.
In my opinion, it’s extremely important for us to have enough sleep and a proper diet. We must learn to make wise use of our time, and only in this way can we keep fit and study well. I wonder if you agree with me.
Thank you for listening!。
