“Hey, Dad,” one of my kids asked the other day, “what was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?”
“We didn’t have fast food when I was growing up,” I informed him. “All the food was slow.”
“Come on, seriously. Where did you eat?”
“It was a place called “home”, I explained. “Grandma cooked every day and when Grandpa got home from work, we sat down together at the dining table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I liked it.”
By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious inner damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handle it:
I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza. It was called “pizza pie”. When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, and plastered(covered) itself against my chin. It’s still the best pizza I ever had.
Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was. Bread and rolls came from the Omar man. All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers. I delivered a newspaper, six days a week even when the snow was 18 inches deep. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents, I had to get up at 4:00 am every morning. On Saturdays, I had to collect the 42 cents from my customers.
If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Growing up isn’t what it used to be, is it?

Researchers from France and Italy discovered that Canadian parents are less strict with their children than mothers and fathers in France and Italy.
“Our most important finding was the difference between Canadians and the others,” said Professor Michel Claes, the lead author of the study. “Canadians focus on independence and negotiation (协商). On the other hand, It alians, for example, exercise more control. We found Canadians seem to focus on negotiation in case of disagreement.”
Claes said Canada, France and Italy were selected for the study because they share important cultural and s ocial factors. “We chose French-Canadians because they share the same language as France, and originally came from France and share certain values. Italy was included because it was considered to have similar, strong and important family values,” he explained.
The researchers examined the emotional ties between parents and their children by questioning 1,256 students aged 11 to 19 years old.
Canadian students reported less control and more free actions, according to the study. Italian parents were stricter and French parents were somewhere in the middle.
Claes explains that the differences lie in education in Canada, France and Italy.
“North America has its own educational values, which promote individualization (个性化). Tolerance and understan ding are encouraged. Italy, on the other hand, promotes respect of authority (权威), control, and the need for permission,” he said.
Children from all three countries described their mothers as warm and communicative. Italian and Canadian children had similar feelings about their fathers, and reported high levels of emotional ties. But French fathers were generally thought by their children to be more distant and cold.
“We were surprised by this,” Claes admitted. “It seems as though the relationships between French mothers and their children were becoming closer over time, while fathers remain a form of distance and coldn ess, which is more of a source of disagreement in France than in the other countries.”
66. According to the findings of the study, who are the least likely to quarrel with their children?
A. Italian parents.
B. French parents.
C. Canadian parents.
D. American parents.
67. Professor Michel Claes believes that Canada, France and Italy _________.
A. have the same family spirit
B. have experienced some similar soc ial changes
C. have some similar cultural traditions
D. have experienced similar cultural development
68. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By collecting answers of parents from Canada, France and Italy.
B. By collecting answers of children from Canada, France and Italy.
C. By questioning parents and their children from Italian-Canadian families.
D. By questioning children from French-Canadian families.
69. According to Michel Claes, what mainly lead to the differences in parent-children relationships
among Canada, France and Italy?
A. Educational opportunities.
B. Traditional ideas.
C. Educational values.
D. Historical events.
70. Which of the following is NOT a finding of the study?
A. French children have troubled relationships with their parents.
B. Canadian children have close relationships with their parents.
C. Italian children have good relationships with their parents.
D. Kids from Canada, France and Italy have closer ties with their moms.
