Researchers say spicy tomatoes could soon be on the menu thanks to the rise of gene-editing technology.
It's not the first time that experts have claimed techniques could develop fruit with unusual features: scientists have already been looking at changing the color1 of kiwi fruit and bettering the taste of strawberries.
But researchers inBrazilandIrelandsay such methods could also offer practical advantages, with hot tomatoes offering a new way of harvesting the pungent chemicals found in peppers known as capsaicinoids, which make food taste “hot”.
“Capsaicinoids are valuable. They are used as painkillers and there are some researches showing that they promote weight loss,” said Agustin Zsogon from a Brazilian university, a co-author of a new article arguing for the benefits of engineering hot tomatoes.
Writing in the journal Trends in Plant Science, the researchers say peppers are difficult crops to grow and low productive. Worse still, it is tricky to keep the pungency of the fruits table. By contrast, tomato production is high and the plant is well-studied. “You could produce the capsaicinoids in a more cost-effective manner,” said Zsogon.
Tomatoes and peppers developed from a common ancestor, but separated about 19 million years ago. “All these genes to produce capsaicinoids exist in the tomato, they are just not active,” said Zsogon. “Using gene-editing technology, it is likely to switch these genes back on in tomatoes, making the fruit more special”, he said.

A year ago I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work paid off. My mom had spent a lot on my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, took part in various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new part of my life.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn't like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was missing my family, my home and everything in my hometown so much and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart.
To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies. I also found a ton of jobs. In any free time, I started forcing myself to go to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think about how lonely I felt. Soon after, I began to control my eating, considering it another solution to my homesickness. But soon there was something wrong with me.
Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor told me I had no choice but to take time away from school, I started to fear. How could I stop? School was what I was best at. “I’m not so bad,” I thought in my head. But the result was that I was taken to hospital again a month later and my mother camewoefully. I had to take a semester off from school, and go to the treatment center near my home.
If there are girls who are suffering similarly, I hope you know that there is hope and that you should have a positive attitude towards life. Though you may feel alone, there are so many people who can understand your struggle. That’s why I want to share my story.

Thana was a postman. His service range covered Vinayak Mudali street and its four nearby roads. It took him nearly six hours to cover the area. That was because he tried to be friendly with peopleforwhom he brought letters. He used to take personal interest in their lives and problems. He would comfort one, offer help to another and give hope to the third. On hot days, he would enjoy buttermilk at someone’s house. He had thus become a part of their life. Everybody liked him.
Thana was most friendly with Raman, a senior clerk in the bank office. Raman had a 23-year- old daughter named Kama, who was a tall, beautiful young lady. These days, Raman was worrying about her marriage and told Thana that his father, whose health was failing, was anxious to see his granddaughter get married soon. The old man, living in another city, had set apart five thousand rupees for her marriage. The old man blamed that Raman was not making enough efforts for his daughter's marriage. Thana comforted Raman and offered to contact the parents of a young man who lived in Delhi. They quickly arranged a blind date for Kama and the young man, who fell in love at the first sight.
Everything went smoothly. At last their wedding day came on May 20th. The wedding party was full of sweet smell of flowers and wines. Everyone in the neighbourhood came. Raman, in high spirits, talked with guests and laughed all the time. The pity was that grandpa didn't show up because of his worsening health.
