第四项:阅读理解
(A)
Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning , which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.

A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.

C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D. Stories for children arc easy to remember.
2. The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.
A. presenting research findings
B. selling down general rules
C. making a comparison
D. using examples
3. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is_______.
A. a result of overlearning
B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems
D. a basic step towards advanced studies
4. What does the word "they" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Commonly accepted rules.
B. The multiplication tables.
C. Things easily forgotten.
D. School subjects.
5. What is the author's opinion on cramming?
A. It leads to failure in college exams.
B. It's helpful only in a limited way.
C. It's possible to result in poor memory.
D. It increases students' learning interest.
(B)
It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing past someone in a narrow aisle, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things.
After all, squeezing past others sometimes can’t be avoided and the bus driver is merely doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started traveling to the British Isles and came to appreciate some more polite ways of communicating with people.
People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and retail assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs as opposed to Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.
Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers stressed several times but none of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criticism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is shown in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to a meal than German men. However, I
do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men. Yes, the latter are a bit tightfisted.
6. what is the author’s attitude towards English politeness?
A. He appreciates it.
B. He gives no personal opinion.
C. He thinks it is artificial.
D. He thinks it goes too far.
7. what can we learn about customers and retail assistants in Germany?
A. It’s always a retain assistant who says thank you
B. a customer never says thank you to a retail assistant.
C. They always say thank you to each other .
D. They may say thank you only once. 8. we can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men_____
A. are more likely to be involved in a fighting
B. are not so willing to spend money for a women.
C. are more polite than English men
D. treat women in a polite way.
9. The author develops the text through the method of ____
A. giving comments
B. telling stories
C. making comparisons
D. giving reasons

Recently, to improve the students’ listening and speaking abilities, the English teacher in Class 3 conducted a survey among the whole class on whether they should have a three minutes’ speech in English at the beginning of a period. According to the survey, 65% students firmly support the idea for they think this method will be helpful to their English learning and it is a good chance for them to practise their listening ability as well as speaking ability.
However, 35% students are strongly against it, saying that it costs the limited time in class. What’s worse, if they can not make sense of the
speeches, they will lose confidence in learning English. As for me, I think it is a good idea to have a three minutes’ speech at the beginning of a period because I believe practice makes perfect.
话题读写任务
(6) How to protect the cultural heritages in our country?
The Great Wall is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a symbol of the ancient Chinese civilization, but now it is in danger and some day it may disappear because of some local people’s destroy. What a pity!As we can see, some other valuable and important relics in our country have been destroying as well. Why are some people doing that so foolishly?Because the local people are not aware of their importance. Cultural heritages are left to us by our ancestors and are also symbols of their wisdoms, which played a very important role in history.
How should we protect our Cultural heritages? In my opinion, firstly, we should make some people who lack of cultural knowledge know about the importance of the historic relics. Destroying them means destroying ourselves. Secondly, the government should take some measures to protect them, and if necessary, laws will be made to punish those who destroy them on purpose. Only in this way can we make our history richer and richer.
(7)读写任务:就“保护中国传统文化”的主题发表看法
Protect Traditional Chinese Culture
The passage mainly tells us the importance of protecting traditional Chinese culture, which is challenged or facing extinction because of the developing society and changing lifestyle. Besides, China is nationwide sparing no efforts to do it.(36 words)
The protection of national and folk culture is of great significance to Chinese cultural diversity and also to the harmonious development between local economic and social development. It is reported that the Guangdong government pays special attention to protecting Chaoju(潮剧),a local drama born in Chaozhou in the eastern Guangdong province.
In my opinion, some measures should be taken to protect traditional culture effectively. To start with, we should make a law to regulate the society’s performance. Besides, we should draw more people’s attention to it, for the more they know about the importance of culture protection, the stronger the support we can get from the public.
In a word, it is high time for us to treasure and develop our own valuable culture.(126 words)。
