W: Welcome everybody to this Cititours bus. I hope you’re having a good time here in the West of England. Our tours usually last about one hour.
The bus is now turning into Queens Road. From this road we can see a very modern building. This is the town’s new sports stadium. All the big matches happen there
but at the moment an international company is using it for a conference.
Now look to yo ur left. We’re now passing the City Theatre. This building is one hundred years old. It’s very pretty, as you see, but it doesn’t have enough seats for big shows. We’ve got a new entertainment centre in Victoria Park. We don’t pass it on the bus, but you may be interested to know it’s got a cinema and a concert hall. Most people prefer it because it’s got air conditioning. Now, on your right, is the High Street. The Cititours bus normally goes along the High Street into the Market Place. But at the moment some musicians are practicing for an outdoor concert there. We’re driving round a different route because the roads in the Market Place are closed. The market was an important local trade centre until about 1970. Farmers bought and sold their cows and sheep there. However, we don’t see animals in the city centre these days. The market area’s got some good shops. Why don’t you have a walk round there later on?
17. What is being held in the new sports stadium?
A. A match.

Even thousands of years before the “selfie(自拍)” was invented, people were concerned with the image of themselves they presented to the world. The rulers of ancient Egypt had artists carve portraits of them to decorate their tombs and preserve
their images even after death.
King Tutankhamen lived more than 3, 000 years ago. He ruled ancient Egypt for 10 years, until his death at age 19. “King Tut” remained practically unknown in the modern world until 1922, when scientists discovered his tomb, buried and forgotten for centuries. The treasures inside gave the world the first detailed picture of ancient Egyptian life.
The ancient Egyptians worshipped(崇拜) many gods. They also believed that all people had a life spirit, called “ka” that needed a place to live after the body died. Tombs inside huge pyramids protected the pharaohs’(法老) ka. The ka could also exist in portrait sculptures like the one of a seated Hatshepsut. The wife of a pharaoh, Hatshepsut took on the role of king after her husband died. Carved from limestone, this life-size sculpture shows the life force of Hatshepsut’s ka. The artist suggests Hatshepsut’s strength by placing her feet firmly on the ground and resting her hands on her knees in a firm, powerful pose.
Viewers are meant to look at the sculpture of Hatshepsut from a frontal angle only. But artist Thutmose created his portrait of Queen Nefertiti as a sculpture in the round, meaning viewers should observe it from many points of view. The work is a highly realistic portrait of a queen who ruled beside her husband, a pharaoh. Painted with delicate(精细的) features, the impressive colors in her portrait resemble the makeup Nefertiti probably wore in life.
Long before any of these portraits were created, a huge creature with a lion’s body and a human head stood guarding in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. No one knows who created the Great Sphinx, or why, but it is said to resemble an early pharaoh. Carved out of solid rock on a larger-than-life scale, it is possibly the oldest and most imposing portrait in the world.

Every year in May, art galleries and museums prepare shows to honor Leonardo Da Vinci, who died in France on May 2, 1519. He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and most creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape8P which, they think, is Da Vinci’s earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images(图像), not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5, 1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “mirror-writing”. It’s a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells about an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, “Leonardo was born left-handed, but was taught to write with his right hand from a very young age. By looking at his writings, including from this drawing, we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done. ”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples(样本)and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape8P from its number in an art list. It will be part of an exhibit at Italy’s Uffizi Gallery. The gallery director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo’s drawing technique and his abilities in writing.
