. Mock test :
Part 1 : Verbal
Paragraph A:
Happiness is a psychological state derived from the events and environment of a person’s everyday life. Being happy is shown to have a positive effect on overall life satisfaction. The “Happiness Index” is a measure of a population's average level of happiness. The concept originated 30 years ago when the King of Bhutan put it into practice. 20 years later, the GDP of Bhutan tops $1,000 per capita, an impressive figure for a small and remote South Asian country. Some commentators have attributed this rising GDP to the fact that the population live a happier life on average than anywhere else. As a result, the Bhutan model of happiness has drawn worldwide attention.
Paragraph B:
Nobody can argue that happiness doe sn’t have intrinsic value. Inherent in this is a contradiction as value infers monetary worth, and we all know money doesn’t necessarily buy happiness! Applying the concept of utility may have a greater relevance to measuring happiness, where utility quantifies the entire benefit an individual draws from the happiness experienced. Measuring utility is difficult, impossible some might say, as utility is subjective. Money, however, is not and monetary GDP has always been the preferred way to compare the wealth of nations, albeit to the exclusion of happiness. If we are to take a more holistic view of wealth we need to establish a way to weigh in the happiness of a nation into its GDP.
