Office of the Dean of Students G308 UCI Student Center (949) 924-5314Use these ideas to maximize members potential:

Be enthusiastic and optimistic! Lead by example and others may follow.•
Use ice breakers or interesting activities for everyone to get to know each other. •
Give individual attention and demonstrate that you understand your members and accept their
strengths and weaknesses.•
Keep members informed – keep correspondence brief and to the point. Similarly keep the web
site up to date. •
Listen to others and be courteous and respectful. Be fair, honest and consistent - show no
favoritism.•
Provide honest feedback – acknowledge successes to reinforce the behavior, and privately
give constructive criticism to those who need help to learn from their mistakes.•
Involve members in goal-setting of the organization and their expectations.•
Occasionally serve food or have some kind of treats at your meetings.•
Have a contest and give a small prize to the person who designs the best program, etc.•
Use team-building activities to energize the group, strengthen loyalty, and commitment.
(People will work harder for other people than for an impersonal entity called an organization).•
Ask about how someone’s day went- sharing current feelings will help relieve any stress.•
Assign tasks according to strengths to maximize the outcome- doing what you love or are good at is a great motivator.
Herzberg’s Motivation Theory lists six (6) factors as primary motivators:
