1. The Paradox of the Nightingale’s Love
On reading this fairy tale, I think most of the readers would feel sad about the poor nightingale, who sacrificed her life for the red rose in the want of the boy.
Lu Xun once said the real tragedy is to destroy the beautiful things in front of people’s eyes. The nightingale once was a beautiful thing. She had the most wonderful voice. The process of her death is distressing, and a real tragedy. But to die in this way is worthwhile based on her values. She is the one who really loved the boy, who, however, didn’t even pay any attention to her, and he was totally occupied with that girl. And the poor bird is just a tool for him to achieve his goal. She flew so far ,for so many places, for the so-called red rose, but consequently died before its glory. She did not even have any glimpse to that precious rose. It is true that love is blind, so blind that all the creatures could take heed of nothing, just to express their affection, to be with their lovers for a minute who can easily betray them, to present all they have in their arms to worship.
Love may be the craziest thing in the world, and the most orthodox. Love is good. It’s the original source of people’s life. It’s the cure-all of someone badly injured in the battlefield, surviving just at the thought of his lover waiting for him at home. It’s the lighthouse of someone sailing in the dark and limitless ocean. But love is also devastating. It’s the original source of people’s depravation. It’s the poison of someone badly
hurt by his or her lover, but still believing that the lover would come back again. It’s the beautiful voice of Siren, making someone sailing in the ocean aground ,even though they knew it’s dangerous. It’s nightingale’s love that bore that most scarlet rose, but also killed her. She’s brave and selfless. I can’t say whether the nightingale’s behavior is worthwhile or not, because for such a brilliant creature, I don’t have right to judge. Maybe that’s is the nature of love. Love won’t be love if it’s not crazy and heedless.
2.The Boy’s Ignorance/ The Paradox of the Boy
The boy’s blind, too. He didn’t know who really loved him and who not. His tragedy had been set long ago. He couldn’t get the girl. He said he loved the girl, but actually, he didn’t know what love meant. I think Wilde satirized the professionals who thought they knew everything, but in fact, they only knew the things that were written down on the books, like the boy. They said they were learned, but they were ignorant. The boy was swinging between love and knowledge. I think the boy is just like the snobbish girl. Perhaps he just loved her beauty, as the girl just loved fortune. On witnessing the girl’s behavior, he just threw the rose away, rushed back to his room, cursed love, and picked up his loyalest friend--book. It seems that he knew everything, but he couldn’t see who’s kind and who’s devil. He wouldn’t love anyone any more, and love is even not half as useful as Logic. The poor bird went a thousand miles,
crawled on the mountains, and tabbed the thorn into her chest to death, just couldn’t make him feel her love.
3.They All Lost Their Ration.
In this article, the poor bird lost her ration to die for someone who had no affection to her. The boy lost his ration to present the precious rose to the girl who didn’t love him and then to curse love. He also lost ration to the so-called knowledge. The girl lost her ration to real jewels, to fortune and to the wealthy nephew. I think there are many people who are like these 3 kinds. I hope people don’t develop the characters of any of them, but it’s just a hope, for once in love, it’s hard to be yourself again.。
