Unit 1
Topic 1: presentations skills
A: There are many skills that can help us make a good presentation. Could you share your opinions about it.
B(我): OK. First, I will talk about planning. You should plan the following things before your presentation: you should know the structure of the presentation:Most presentations are organized in three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. Then select the information that is relevant to your speech.
A: Yes. With good planning you will be more confident and less nervous. And I think how to arrange the content of a presentation is important too. First, you should introduce yourself, and tell the audiences what you are going to talking about. of course you should let they know how long you are going to take and when they can ask a question. After that you can turn to the body of your presentation. what do you think we should you pay attention to when delivering a speech?
B: Very importantly, you should speak very clearly and loudly to make others keep up with you. You can also use Body language to help you. The other important point is not to speak in the same and flat voice throughout your presentation;you can vary your voice in at least three
ways: speed, volume and intonation.
A: yeah. In case of forgetting the content, you can use some notes on small cards, writing down key words to remind you. You can also make use of visual aids, but remember that you should give your audience enough time to look at and absorb the information.(加)
B: well, last but not least, don’t forget your audiences: you should have eye contact and interaction with them. And give them the question time.
Topic 2:How to save our environment
A (give the presentation): Good morning, everyone. I am honored to be here with you. Today, I am going to give a talk on the protection of our environment. My talk consists of two parts. One is the importance of saving our environment, and the other is how to protect the environment.
Let’s start from the first point. Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe and poisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our later generations.
Well, to protect it, first, we should enhances people's consciousness [kɔnʃəsnis]with understanding, strengthens the environmental protection consciousness. Next, we can carry on waste recovery use, reduces to
forest-tree's felling. Also must strengthen to white pollution processing, little uses the plastic product. Finally, must make improvement to clean aspect. For Earth's tomorrow, we must start from now and from little things.
In conclusion…
That’s all. Thank you. Now I am ready to answer your questions, if any.
B (the audience): Miss…,I have a question to ask you…
A: this is a very good question…
Unit 2
Topic 1:asking the way
A:Excuse me. Could you tell me where the nearest men’s room is?
B:Go straight on, and then take the first turning on the left.
A:Should I take a bus?
B: No. it will just take about 10 minutes on foot.
Topic 2: on-campus or off-campus accommodation
A: Hey, look at this off-campus accommodation advertisement here! It says the room is only £325 including all furniture.
B: Does the rent include utility [ju’tiliti] fees? I guess not, right? Campus housing includes all your utility charges. And on-campus environment might be better for students to study and live.
A: I guess that could be true. Well, the ad also says the apartment is close to the city centre. And there are take-ways and cybercafés around it, that’s great! And that's a lot easier if I need go shopping.
B: Is it near to your school? Remember you need to get to school everyday. If it is far from your apartment, you might be late to your classes. Living on campus, you can just walk to your lecture rooms or you can use the free bus service connecting the teaching sites. That saves your time and money.

Topic 3: what do you think about volunteer work?
A: The volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people in recent years, especially among young people. More and more students want to do volunteer work. What do you think of this situation?
B: Well, first, it’s true that volunteering is of great benefits to both those in need and society. Take the Olympic Games as an example. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers play an active role in Olympic
Games. And they contribute daily necessaries, offer help to foreign friends.
A: Yes, but as for students, the most important thing is study, if you take part in a volunteer work, it will take you a lot of time and energy.
B: I disagree with you there. Volunteering would be beneficial to the volunteers themselves. Getting involved in volunteering, volunteers will be exposed to a new environment, and they can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve their interpersonal skills and organizational skills, all of which are critical for their professional growth. In my opinion, it’s worth to spend time and energy on it.
A: So, as you said, it is not only good to our society, but also a chance for us to grow and to learn. Right?
B: yeah, I think so.

(Customs in Canada and the U.S. with China)(P24)
A(庄开头): Social customs differ from place to place in the world. There are many differences in social customs between Americans and Chinese.
B:(我)Yes. The most obvious is that people are very informal in social situations in the United States. For example, it’s quite common for students to address the teachers by their first names. In China, however, this will be regarded as quite impolite…
A: yes, and I think Americans people are more openly in expressing their feeling ,for example Americans people often say “I love you” to their parents straight . but it maybe not easy for most Chinese people.
However, there are similarities between US and China. For example, when meet people in a formal situation ,they always shake hands with each other, just the same in china and USA.
B(我结尾): Only those who have an awareness of the culture of another nation can have a better command of its language.

Unit 5
Topic 1: whether science and technology will destroy the earth A:正方B:反方
I don’t think the science and technology will destroy the earth. Firstly, we have to confess that , along with the developing of technology ,we lead a better life than before ,and the earth haven’t been destroyed now.
Of course we confess that the developing of technology bring some problem to the earth ,but we can also use another technology to settle the problem ,for example , because the invention of cars, we use more gas than before , and the smoke from this pollute the air. But now , we has invent the gas without sulfur ,which make the smoke from cars won’t pollute the air. besides that, we also had many other solutions too. So I don’t think the science and technology will destroy the earth.

A: of course, I know, he is Jay! Why do you like him ?he is not handsome. What’s more, he does not speak clearly when he sings or talks.
B: It is just his style of singing. His songs sound good. He has huge crowds of fans. He doesn't speak very often. However, if you talk to him about music, he'll have a lot to say. We all know he worked hard in the past, and has succeeded today. I can learn from him and try my best to achieve my dream. Well, who is your favorite singer?
A: for me ,the most favorite singers is wang jie. You maybe strange, because he is a singer of 90s, so many young people even don’t know him nowadays. But he is a really super stars in his time . I like him just because I like his music , his voice is very special , full of emotion , and sounds sentimentally. He has many classical songs ,such as <forget you and forget me>, <a game and a dream>.
B:why?过时,年轻人不认识
A:。

Topic 2: interview with a famous Chinese singer
前CNN主播采访“歌神”张学友
LH(我): Welcome to our program, I'm Lorraine Hahn, my guest this week is Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung.Cheung was the first Hong Kong singer to win over the mandarin-speaking market, with the album 'Goodbye kis s'. Since then, he’s show n multiple singing talents. Cheung is without doubt one of the most famous singers in China. Now, Jacky comes here to tell us how he does it and much more.
LH: It's good to see you. Thank you very much for coming here.
JC: It’s my honor. I've been looking forward to talking with you.
LH: Why do you think you have continued to endure and be as popular as you are -- for so long?
JC: I don't know. Well, the one theory that I believe is that you have to keep working. New people might love your new things and some people might love the old things, so you've got to keep doing something, keep exploring yourself。

LH: (补充,你确实很努力)You know there's so much new talent coming into the markets these days, is that a concern for you? Does that mean you have to be more on the ball, more on the edge?
JC: Why, I mean, once I was new to the other singing sections, now I'm one of the senior singers, ok?! -- So, that's quite normal to me actually. And I think the scenes need more new blood。

LH: In your album you wrote all the songs, correct? (JC: Yes. Laughs LH: Wow) I mean, why write, why start writing?
JC: One thing I think is you really need to be yourself in the market.
That's why I started to write something. The best way to tell people
who you are is to write something about yourself, and tell them about yourself. So I started writing some songs。

LH: 你大概什么时候推出演艺圈?
JC:I haven’t hink about this question now ,may be the day I am too old to sing.
LH: Jacky, thank you so much for coming in to talk to us. We really appreciate it. Thank you.
JC: I was really happy to talk to you, too.
Topic 3: play musical instruments or not?
In my opinion, it's very important, especially if you have no other artistic skills. When you grow up, you will feel the need of expressing your emotions. We will meet a lot of difficulties in love and career, playing a musical instrument can help us vent the bad feelings out. And I believe every child has a taste for music if it is cultivated properly at an early age .learning musical instruments also help them develop intelligence and appreciation for art. Of course, it still has lots of other benefits. So ,in my opinion children should learn at least one musical instrument.
(我)I don't think so. Although nowadays there are lots of children learning musical instruments, how many of them are willing to do this? Many may be forced to learn by their parents. They only see others’ children learning them, and they just don't want be backward! I think it is
necessary for children who are willing to learn musical instruments, but not important for every child.
Actually, I don’t think learning musical instruments is important for every child. Mabe,as individual as the person .But i have to say, music can make you relax. specially, play it by yourself. You can really enjoy the course!
Unit 8
Topic 1: Should sports stars be given top salaries?
(我正方观点)
A: Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those research scientists, or even leading
B: sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes. Instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.
A: the number of professionals with real talent is very few. Competition is constant in their relatively short career, the pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight.
反方观点:
I don’t think they deserve the top salaries. in my opinion ,the salaries you get should match the working you do ,but as to sport star, they not work enough , and they have little contribution to the social. contrary
some top sport stars even be the bad example of young people. Such as take drug ,have gun .And sports are a team work ,every one of the team all work hard ,so I think every one of the team should get the equal salaries.
Topic2:whether it is worthwhile to take the risk of sports
First of all, I would like to tell you one of my favorite commericials. That is Nike’s “ Just do it!” I would say noth ing is really safe in this world. There is always a potential risk or danger in all kinds of sports, even those indoor sports. For example, each year a number of people drown in the peaceful swimming pool rather than in the wavy oceans . Shall people quit swimming just because of some people drown? No way. This is just like there are airplane crashes each year. But people still take the risk of taking the flights.
Life is short. It is the quality of life that matters. In my opinion, the quality of life is doing something one enjoys most. I personally enjoy playing badminton, swimming, and jogging. As long as I enjoy doing all this stuff, I don't care whether I will hurt my back, or sprain my ankle or something more serious. Of course, taking risks does not mean taking no precautions. A smart sports lover knows how to take care of himself or herself. In a word, if you are doing something you really enjoy, then it is worthwhile. As we all know that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
Unit 9
Topic1:is Romantic Love Important for Marriage?
Marriage is the result and extension of love. Therefore, romantic love is the most important condition for marriage.
Love should be the most important condition because a marriage without love is like hell in which the couple suffer for the rest of their lives.
Romantic love will enable the couple to conquer any difficulty in their life together.
In feudal society, many people suffered from arranged marriages because love was never an element for consideration in marriages at that time.
Romantic love can lead to the healthy psychological development of the couple. Marriage based on love will bring forth beautiful and intelligent children and can create a happy and harmonious atmosphere in the family which is good for the development of children.
A happy marriage helps one to achieve more in one's career.
A marriage without love is worse than being single.
Marriages without love are most likely to end with divorce which create many social problems.
A marriage without money might bring trouble and quarrelling.
Education is also an important condition for a good marriage because a couble whose educational levels do not match are not likely have much in common.
Age is an important element because, if the couple belong to different age groups, they might have different interests and find it hard to understand each other.
Love is not the only important condition. It requires the combination of many conditions, all of which are important.
