The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece — have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his
12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint–Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modem Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title 'Guernica' refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting
is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.

When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself , “I would never sit back i n a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me”. No one could have had a more active old age.
She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to
sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it” she said.

Self-driving vehicles (车辆) will rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize and respond to road and traffic conditions, but sensing is the most effective for objects and movement near the vehicle. Not everything important in a car's surroundings will be caught by the vehicle's camera. Another vehicle approaching at high speed on a collision (碰撞) track might not be visible until it's too late. This is why vehicle-to-vehicle communication is undergoing rapid development. Our research shows that cars will need to be able to chat and cooperate on the road, although the technical challenges are huge.
Applications of vehicle-to-vehicle communication range from vehicles driving together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles. Vehicles could alert each other to avoid collisions or share notice about passers-by and bicycles.
From as far as several hundred metres away, vehicles could exchange messages with one another or receive information from the Roadside Unit (RSU) about nearby incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G network. A high level of AI seems to be required for such vehicles, not only to self-drive from A to B, but also to react intelligently to messages received. Vehicles will need to plan, reason, strategize(制定策略) and adapt according to the information received in real time and to carry out cooperative behaviour. For example, a group of self-driving vehicles might avoid a route together because of potential risks, or a
vehicle could decide to drop someone off earlier due to messages received, like a foreseen crowd ahead.
Further applications of vehicle-to-vehicle communication are still being researched, including how to perform cooperative behaviour.
8.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The reasons for the accidents by self-driving vehicles.
B.The research about applications of self-driving vehicles.
C.The importance of artificial intelligence of selfdriving vehicles.
D.The reasons for developing communication between self-driving vehicles.
9.What does the underlined word "alert" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Alarm. B.Judge. C.Ignore. D.Control. 10.What can we learn about the Roadside Unit (RSU) ?
A.It can improve bad road conditions. B.It recognizes the vehicles on the road. C.It takes control of the passing vehicles. D.It serves as an efficient information station.
11.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Importance of high-level AI.
B.Vehicle-to-vehicle communication.
C.Different kinds of vehicle communication.
D.Ways to improve our communication with vehicles.
While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The
curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).
Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. "That is only evidence that traditions once existed," he said.
"Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, " he said.
"Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are, " said Wang.
The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.
12.Wang’s winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ___________. A.following the latest world trend
B.getting international recognition
C.working harder than ever before
D.relying on foreign architects
13.What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?
A.Its hilly environment.
B.Its large size.
C.Its unique style.
D.Its diverse functions.
14.What made Wang’s architectural design a success?
A.The mixture of different shapes.
B.The balance of East and West.
C.The use of popular techniques.
D.The harmony of old and new.
15.What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?
A.Spread them to the world. B.Preserve them at museums.
C.Teach them in universities. D.Recreate them in practice.

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转)and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran
to Grandpa. He clung(附着)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach.
Sami watched dumbstruck(呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher a nd higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!" He
went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌)in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

Not everything important in a car's surroundings will be caught by the vehicle's camera...This is why vehicle-to-vehicle communication is undergoing rapid

D项“The reasons for developing communication between

画线词上文“Applications of v ehicle-to-vehicle communication range from vehicles driving together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles.(车对车通信的应用范围很广,从并排行驶的车辆,到关于附近应急车辆的安全信息)”告诉我们车辆与车辆之间的通讯应用范围很广,所以从画线词所在句“Vehicles could alert each other to avoid collisions or share notice about passers-by and bicycles.”

故选A项。

10.

根据第三段第一句“From as far as several hundred metres away, vehicles could exchange messages with one another or receive information from the Roadside Unit(RSU)about nearby incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G network.(在几百米远的地方,车辆可以通过4G网络相互交换信息,或者从路边单元(RSU)接收附近事故或危险道路状况的信息)”可知,从几百米之外的地方,自动驾驶的车辆便可以通过RSU来交换或接收关于附近事故或危险路况的信息。
