Last year, Claire Noble-Randall woke up at 5:30 am every morning. She had to catch two buses to arrive in time for first-period chemistry at Ingraham High School in Seattle, US.
Ingraham starts at 8 am, but Noble-Randall often d idn’t get to sleep until after midnight. “It was really hard not to fall asleep in class,” she said.
Her mom solved the problem this year when she discovered that other parents had hired a private city tour bus to take their children to the school.
“Now, she leaves the house at a much more reasonable time 7:10 in the morning... to catch the little tour bus at 7:23 am,” said her mother, Noelle Noble.
That may be one way to help students get more sleep. But more than 3,300 people have signed an online petition (请愿) looking for a better solution from the Seattle school district. Those who have signed the petition want all high schools and middle schools to start no earlier than 8:30 am. Most of Seattle’s high schools and middle schools start at 8 am or earlier.
Later start times for teenagers is an idea that some parents around the nation, have wanted for years. They’ve provided plenty of scientific evidence that teenagers tend to be night owls and delayed start times improve their health, mood, attention, and, in some cases, learning.
But attempts to delay start times for teenagers haven’t worked. Coaches don’t want late dismissals (放学) cutting into sports practices; community groups don’t want to wait longer for gyms and fields and before- and after-school programs don ‘t want to change their schedules.
This time, however, they’ve got Seattle School Board. President Sharon Peaslee on their side. She herself is the mother of two high school students. Peaslee hopes other board members will pass her plan calling on the district to find a way to make the changes.
24. How did Noble-Randal solve her problem of early classes?
A. She quit first-period classes.
B. She found a faster way to the school.
C. She took a private city tour bus to the school.
D. Her family moved to a house near the school.
25. People who signed the online petition want schools to .
A. provide a school bus service
B. delay school start times
C. improve the quality of lessons
D. stop students from falling asleep in class
26. Why did parents’ attempts to change school start times fail?
A. Not enough people signed the petition.
B. No scientific evidence could support their idea.
C. It would influence the schools’ schedules.
D. It would influence many out-of-school activities.
27. What can we infer from the article?
A. More parents will hire a private bus for their children.
B. Seattle schools plan to change their schedules next year.
C. There will be less after-school activities and programs.
D. There is now a higher chance of delaying school start times.

A team of Michigan State University (MSU) researchers has developed a new, more efficient way of cloning zebra fish, a breakthrough that could have an impact on research into human health.
Zebra fish are quickly becoming the animal of choice for many researchers.
“After mice, they are the most commonly used vertebrates, that is, animals with backbones, in genetic studies,”says Jose Cibelli, the leader of the team. “They are used in cancer and heart-disease research because they have many of the same genes as people have. ”
For more than 20 years, zebra fish have also served as an excellent model for understanding both normal development and birth imperfections. More recently, research with zebra fish has extended to modeling human diseases.
Traditional cloning uses an egg and a donor(捐赠者) cell. The DNA is removed from the egg and replaced by the DNA taken from the donor. The resulting fish is an exact genetic copy of the donor. In Cibelli's technique, the egg is removed from the female zebra fish and placed in the ovarian(卵巢的) fluid of a Chinook salmon, another kind of fish, before the donor cell is placed into the egg. The previous methods of cloning zebra fish had very low survival rates. With the new technique, the number of cloned fish is increased by 15 percent.
What makes zebra fish so useful in research is that their eggs are transparent (透明的), making the fish's development easy to follow.
Improving zebra-fish cloning techniques is also important because currently the mouse is the only good model for genetic research.
“So far the mouse is the only animal from which you can delete genes in a reliable way,”Cibelli says. “What researchers do is mutate (使变异) a gene, destroy its function completely, and then study the consequence. ”
29.What do we learn about zebra fish from the text?________
A. They can be used to cure human diseases.
B.They have been used in genetic studies for 20 years.
C.They are the only vertebrates used in cloning.
D.Their survival rates are increased by the new method of cloning.
30.Researchers choose zebra fish for genetic research because ___________.
A.they have the same genes as human beings
B.they are a kind of vertebrate
C.their genes can be changed
D.their eggs are easy to observe
31.If 20 zebra fish could be cloned by the previous method, how many zebra fish can be cloned by the new one?__________
A.20. B.23. C.17. D.15.
32.What's the text mainly about?________
A.How cloning has developed.
B.A study of a new way to clone zebra fish.
C.A breakthrough in research into human health.
D.Zebra fish, the best model for genetic research.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages
of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
32. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?
A. Improving the quality.
B. Worsening the state.
C. Fixing the time.
D. Deciding the conditions.
33. The passage is developed mainly by_________.
A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B. giving examples
C. pointing out similarities and differences
D. describing the changes in space order
34. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
B. The eating habit of African elephants.
C. Disappearance of African elephants.
D. The effect of African elephants’ search for food.
35. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A. They are home to many endangered animals.
B. They result from the destruction of rain forests.
C. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
D. They provide food mainly for African elephants.
