A Lifelong Devotion to Keeping People Fed
Yuan Longping is a Chinese agricultural scientist and educator, known for developing the hybrid rice varieties.
Yuan graduated from the Southwest Agriculture Institute in 1953 andbegan his teaching career at an agriculture school.
In the 1960s, when a serious food shortage sweptChina, Yuan decided to devote himself to studying how to increase the yields of rice. He then began a lifelong connection with rice.
Yuan succeeded in growing the world’s first high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in 1973, which could reach a yield of over 500 kg per mu (about 0.067 hectares), rising from the previous yield of only 300 kg per mu. For the next four decades, he continued to work on research and development of hybrid rice, achieving increasingly higher outputs. In 2020, hybrid rice developed by Yuan’s team achieved 1,500 kilograms per mu in two growing seasons, a new world record.
InChina, where rice is the main food for the majority of the 1.4 billion people, the planting area of hybrid rice has reached 16 million hectares, or 57 % of the total planting area of rice, helping feed an extra 80 million people a year.
Hybrid rice has also been grown in over 40 countries, including theU.S.,Brazil,India,Vietnam, thePhilippinesandMadagascar. The total planting area of the hybrid rice has reached 8 million hectares overseas.
Even after a great success, Yuan never held himself back from making new breakthroughs. In 2017, his team started to grow seawater rice inQingdao. The rice was designed to grow in saline-alkaline land and survive even after being completely in seawater. His team planned to develop a type of seawater rice that could be planted in 6.67 million hectares of saline-alkaline land acrossChinato boost the country’s rice harvest by about 20 %. In 2018, Yuan’s team was invited to plant the saline-alkaline tolerant rice in experimental fields inDubai, which achieved huge success. In June 2020, his team started to grow seawater rice on a farm at an altitude of 2,800 meters in northwestChina’sQinghaiProvince. The experiment succeeded.
Yuan had two dreams — to “enjoy the cool under the rice crops taller than men” and that hybrid rice could be grown all over the world to help solve the global food shortage.

We interviewed two people, one who went from the country to the city and one who did the opposite.
Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louisfive years ago. Here’s what Janet told us:
“Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too. You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don’t know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like beinganonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.”
Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us:
“The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose — if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield.”
4. What troubled Janet when she was in Lemon Falls?
A. She had no friends.
B. There was no privacy.
C. There was a lot of competition.
D. She couldn’t find a well-paid job.
5. What does the underlined word “anonymous” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Alone.
B. Prepared.
C. Sociable.
D. Unknown.
6. Different from Janet, Troy ________.
A. prefers country life
B. moved to a bigger city
C. grew up in a smaller town
D. knows little about his new neighbors
7. What is Troy’s opinion on living in Bloomfield?
A. It is a little boring.
B. It is quite comfortable.
C. It costs a lot of money.
D. It creates a safe environment.

Peggy Whitson's job demands a daily twohour workout in a gym where weight has no meaning and the view changes at 17,000 miles an hour.
Whitson makes it look easy. At 57, she is the oldest woman to fly in space, breaking the record last November, 2016, when she began her third longterm stay at the International Space Station. After returning home in September, 2017, the NASA astronaut feltmatter-of-factabout the age milestone.
“It wasn't a record I was seeking for,” Whitson said. “I was 42 and 48 for my first two space flights. I feel lucky that I was able to get to do another one in my 50s. I don't think people should let age discourage them, even on those jobs that require some amount of physical fitness. The oldest man is John Glenn (at 77), and we've had male astronauts in their 60s before, so it's just a matter of time before women start flying in space at this age”.
On the earth, she stays fit by weightlifting, biking, playing basketball and water skiing. She shared what it's like to live in microgravity: “It's like you're in a swimming pool, but you don't have to worry about breathing. If I push off from one side, I'm going to float to the other side. Every direction feels exactly the same, which is really hard for your brain to grasp, but it's amazing how fast you adapt.
It's a big shock for the body to come back to Earth—everything is so heavy. We spend a lot of time getting used to being back in gravity again. Back pain was really the most dramatic for me this time. For me, coming home is harder than going up into space.”
8. How long did Peggy Whitson spend for her third stay in the International Space Station?
A. About 300 days.
B. About 708 days.
C. About 107 days.
D. About
57 days.
9. What does the underlined word probably mean in the passage?
A. Amazing.
B. Not surprising.
C. Enthusiastic.
D. Unbelievable.
10. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Peggy Whitson likes swimming most.
B. Peggy Whitson is the oldest person to fly in space.
C. Peggy Whitson had been in space in 2002 and 2008.
D. There had been female astronauts over 60s flying in space before.
11. Which of the following will Peggy Whitson probably say?
A. You can still be successful and do physical things when old.
B. I spent quite a lot of time getting used to the life in space.
C. The moment we reached the earth, we felt so relaxed.
D. I feel lucky that I am physically well after the whole journey.

There are 195 countries in the world today but almost none of them have purple on their national flag. So what’s wrong with purple? It’s such a popular color1 today. Why would no country use it in their flag? The answer is really quite simple. Purple was just for too expensive.
The color1 purple has been associated with royalty power and wealth for centuries. Queen Elizabeth I forbade anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it. Purple’s high status comes from the rarity and cost of the dye (染料)originally used to produce it. Fabric traders got the dye from a small sea snail (海螺)that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean. More than 10,000 snails were needed to create just one gram of purple; not to mention a lot of work went into producing the dye, which made purple dye so expensive.
Since only wealthy rulers could afford to buy and wear the color1 , it became associated with the royal family. Sometimes, however, the dye was too expensive even for royalty. Third century Roman Emperor Aurelio famously wouldn’t allow his wife to buy a scarf made from purple silk because it cost three times its weight in gold. A single pound of dye cost three pounds of gold, which equals 56,000 dollars today. Therefore, even the richest countries couldn’t spend that much having purple on their flags.
The dye became more accessible to lower-class about a century and a half ago. In 1856, 18-year-old English chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally created a man-made purple compound (化合物)while attemptingto produce an anti-malaria drug. He noticed that the compound could be used to dye fabrics, so he patented the dye, manufactured it and got rich. Purple dye was then mass-produced so everybody could afford it.
Till now, a handful of new national flags have been designed and a few of them have chosen to use purple in
their flag. So don’t be making any bets just yet.
12. Why was color1 purple expensive in the past?
A. Because only royal families were allowed to wear purple.
B. Because it took a long time to get purple dye from gold.
C. Because purple was worth as much as its weight in gold.
D. Because purple dye used to be rare and hard to produce.
13. Why did Roman Emperor Aurelio forbid his wife to buy a purple scarf?
A. Because of poor quality.
B. Because of long tradition.
C. Because of bad taste.
D. Because of high price.
14. What is purple's situation now?
A. Purple has been widely used on national flags.
B. Purple dye is now affordable to ordinary people.
C. Royal family stop using purple because it’s toocommon.
D. Fewer snails are used to produce purple dye than before.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. No Purple Flags?
B. Purple vs Gold
C. How to Produce Purple Dye?
D. The Birth of Purple Color

Once upon a time, there lives a very strong woodcutter who asked for a job in a timber(木材) merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him the axe(斧子) and showed him the area, that he was supposed to work.
The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees. “Congratulation,” the boss said. “Go on that way”. Very motivating by the boss’s words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day. But hardly did he able to bring more than 15 trees.
The third day he tried even hard, but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing fewer and fewer trees. “I must be losing my strength,” the woodcutterthought. He went to the boss but apologized, “What disappointing my efforts were! I couldn’t understand what was going on”. “When was the last time you sharpen your axe?” the boss asked. “Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been busy try to cut trees...”

I was touched through experiences, memories, books, stories, animals, angels, and most of all other people. People have moved me and molded (塑造) me with moments of love and examples of kindness.
One time on the day before Christmas many years ago when I was a mill worker with a minimum wage, I found myself with very little money and very little time to buy my small children a few simple toys. I knew that they would have to be cheap ones and I hoped my children would like them. I hated not having enough to give them more. I hated being poor. And I hated feeling bad at Christmas rather than happy.
I pulled into a store parking lot and counted my money again. It wasn’t much but maybe I could get something small with it. As I was getting out of the car I noticed the Salvation Army bellringer (撞钟人) at the
entrance. I felt bad again because I didn’t feel I could spare anything to give him. I started walking towards the entrance when two cars pulled into empty parking spots in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Cadillac and I felt kind of jealous when I saw it. “How nice,” I thought, “would it be to have enough money to buy a car like that.” The second car, though, was an ancient sedan, more beat-up (破旧的) and rusty than the one I was driving.
A man hopped out of the Cadillac and hurried into the store right past the bellringer without a second glance. Out of the old sedan came a young mother with three small children. Her clothes looked a sworn-out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the bellringer, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a bill in his red kettle.
