21.(6分)When I was a boy there were no smartphones, and our television only got one channel clearly.Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground.I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake.At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for hours.I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “Turn around and head back home”,but I was stubborn, so I walked on.There was still neither a car nor a house in sight.I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared.I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me.My heart was pounding and my legs were aching.I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized.I jumped up and down and laughed out loud.It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time.I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.
I remembered this recently when I saw a sign th at said “All roads lead home”.It is true.In life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. What is important, though, is how we travel them. Are we going to go forth in fear or are we
going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.

22.(8分)Nearly 19 percent of teachers of color (有色人种教师) left their jobs after the 2014-2015 school year. Some left for personal reasons like taking care of their families. But 50 percent said they left because they were dissatisfied with their employment situation, such as poor working conditions, student discipline problems and large class sizes. Thus, taking immediate measures to improve it is our top priority.
For years, researchers have proved the benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools, especially as our public school system has turned to one that is made up mostly of minority students. Teachers of color, who are more likely than their white counterparts to choose to work in racially diverse (多种多样的) schools, offer particular benefits to their students. Graduation rates increase among minority students when they are taught by racially similar educators, research shows. They can also serve as positive role models, and their presence reduces the chance of racial discrimination at school.
The Shanker Institute report suggests that the rate of minority teacher hiring is not the whole problem. The problem is what happens after these teachers enter the classroom. These teachers often work in high-poverty rural schools. They are more likely to have less-desirable working conditions.
Diversity is a key component to equality and opportunity. Where there’s a diverse teaching workforce, all kids thrive. So solutions must be found at once to turn this trend around. Firstly, schools should develop mentorship programs that support minority teachers once they are in the classroom. Secondly, more money should be spent in improving working conditions in these schools. Of course, school headmasters should also be evaluated on their ability to retain teachers of color.
1、Among teachers of color leaving their jobs, half of them quit because . A.they had to take care of their children
B.they had to move to other places
C.they eventually found better-paid jobs
D.their employment situation was unsatisfactory
2、Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.The solutions to increasing graduation rates among minority students.
B.The benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools.
C.The reasons for teachers of color leaving their jobs in many schools.
D.The ways to decrease the possibility of racial discrimination at school.
3、How did the author feel when writing the passage?
A.He felt angry about the government.
B.He was satisfied with the present situation.
C.He felt it urgent to solve the problem.
D.He didn’t care about diverse teaching workforce.
23.(8分)Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists.
Scientist A: I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world’s problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive
influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us.
Scientists B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we could be quickly substituted. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term machines might decide the world would be better without humans.
Scientists C: I’m a member of the campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrif ying Terminator stamping on human skulls and think of what’s happening right now: military machines like drones, gun turrets and sentry robots are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots” follow ing orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be extremely dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do.
1、What is Scientists B worried about?
A.AI technology will destroy the earth.
B.Computers can’t think by themselves.
C.Robots will take the place of humans.
D.Humans will be unhappy without machines.
2、What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.I launch the campaign to Stop Killer Robots.
B.We forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator.
C.“Murderbots” can’t decide by themselves.
D.“Murderbots” will be against human’s orders.
3、Which statement is RIGHT according to the record?
A.Scientist A thinks AI technology will never develop.
B.The employment will be affected by AI technology in the future. C.“Murderbots” will follow the orders of their manufactures in the wars.
D.All the three scientists agree that AI technology will benefit human beings.
4、Who agree(s) AI has more negative aspects than positive aspects?
A.Scientist A B.Scientist B
C.Scientists B&C D.Scientists B&A
24.(8分)If you're ever reading a book or watching a movie and get the clear feeling that you've come across the story before—or even better, can predict exactly what's going to happen next—there could be a good reason for that.
Researchers from the Computational Story Laboratory at the University of Vermont studied the complete text of some 1,737 fiction works available on Project Gutenberg, an online collection of more than 50,000 digital books in the public area. They discovered that English literature consist of just six kinds of emotional arcs(情感弧线) that make up nearly all of the most well-known stories. By analyzing the
sentiment(情感)of language used in these texts, the researchers were able to show the emotional ups and downs for the stories as a whole. They discovered that negative words like “poverty”,“dead”,and “punishment” dragged the emotion down, while positive terms like “love”,“peace”,and “friend” brou ght it up.
According to the researchers, those six core emotional arcs are:
“Rags to riches” (An ongoing emotional rise)
“Tragedy, or riches to rags” (An ongoing emotional fall)
“Man in a hole” (A fall followed by a rise)
“Icarus” (A rise followed by a fall)
“Cinderella” (Risefallrise)
“Oedipus” (Fallrisefall)
Interestingly, based on download statistics from Project Gutenberg, the researchers say the most popular stories are ones that use more complex emotional arcs, with the Cinderella and Oedipus arcs registering the most downloads. Also popular are works that combine these core arcs together in new ways within one story, such as two “Man in
a hole” arcs stuck together, or the “Cinderella” arc coupled with a tragic ending.
1、Readers often feel familiar when reading a new story because stories have similar
____________.
A.beginnings B.endings
C.characters D.emotional arcs
2、How did researchers carry out their study?
A.By conducting surveys among readers.
B.By reading books borrowed from libraries.
C.By analyzing works from an online collection.
D.By interviewing authors of the well-known stories.
3、Which set of words may drag emotion down?
A.Hope, fortune and riches. B.Disease, murder and war.
C.Smile, health and beauty. D.Cold, earthquake and spring.
4、According to the last paragraph, which kind of works are the most popular among readers?
A.Works with an ongoing emotional rise.
B.Works with an ongoing emotional fall.
C.Works with a rise followed by a fall.
D.Works with more than one rise and fall.
25.(10分)An autonomous vehicle designed for making local commerce deliveries was uncovered by Nuro. The vehicle is about the height of an SW but far narrower than a typical car. The electric car features four outside compartments(暗格)—two on each side -to hold separate deliveries. Each compartment can be tailored to a specific use, such as cooking a pizza or refrigerating a package.
“We can use self-driving technology to deliver anything, anytime, anywhere for basically all local goods and s ervices,” Nuro co-founder Dave Ferguson said. “Consumers used to be okay with two-week paid shipping. It became two-week free delivery, followed by one week, two days, and the same day. Now same-day delivery isn’t fast enough for some customers.”
Nuro isn’t alone in building robots for local commerce deliveries. Earlier this month, Toyota, a Japanese car company, uncovered a concept vehicle that could be used for package delivery. A handful of startups—including Starship Technologies, Marble and Dispatch—are testing small robots for deliveries on sidewalks.
Nuro’s vehicle will likely face legal hurdles. Fully autonomous vehicles without a test diver aren’t legal in California today, and many companies have shifted testing o states where regulators are more welcoming of autonomous vehicles, such as Arizona.
Nuro expects to face fewer challenges because it doesn’t carry passengers. Nuro’s narrow size may also be helpful when navigating streets and avoiding pedestrians. The vehicle isn’t equipped with any specia l features to communicate with pedestrians or
other road users. Some companies have tested and patented solutions such as digital screens that signal the car’s next move. Ferguson said his team conducted studies and found that such techniques could confuse people. Nuro believes it’s better to make sure the car performs predictably, so that human drivers know what to expect from it.
“We feel by creating this new technology that’s going to enable this last mile delivery, we’re going to be creating new markets and doing things that previously weren’t possible,” Ferguson said. “This is not swapping out jobs with robots. It’s creating new markets. There will definitely be new employment opportunities.”
1、What is the main characteristic of the Nuro’s self-driving vehicle?
A.It can cook delicious meals for customers.
B.It is a pioneer in the field of self-driving vehicles.
C.It is fur narrower and higher than other autonomous ones.
D.Its deliveries can be transported in the special compartment.
2、Which can best repl ace the underlined word “hurdles” in Paragraph 4? A.breakthrough. B.dilemma.
C.restriction. D.protection.
3、Why is the Nuro’s vehicle not equipped with communicating features?
A.Its digital screens often break down.
B.People may be puzzled at the features.
C.The features have not been developed.
D.Its performance is usually hard to predict.
4、What can we infer about Ferguson’s opinion on this new technology? A.Beneficial. B.Challenging.
C.Controversial. D.Ambiguous.
