I needed to get some money so,after Christmas,I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale.I can’t say that I enjoyed it,but it was all experience I'll never forget.
I could never understand why there were so many filings in the sales;where did they all come from? Now I know the secret[Firstly, there is the special winter stock(货物)and the stock that people buy all the year round;some of these things ate slightly reduced.Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year;these are heavily reduced to clear them.Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales;these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60%in the sale.Clever !Lastly, they buy
in “seconds〞(clothes not in perfect condition)for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.
When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue amend three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. When the big moment moved to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in.I couldn’t believe my eyes:this wasn’t shopping,it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from be hind.
Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl (爬行) through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.
Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper(脾气) ! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham's were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.
In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.

In 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers(探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the "moon people" they met. In turn, the "moon people" expressed their surprise. "Why," they asked, "are you traveling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?"
H.G. Wells could only imagine traveling to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people〞 asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it. Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The “Channel〞, a tunnel (隧道) connecting England and France, is now completed.
But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground system, called “Alice Cities〞. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H.G. Wells' “moon people〞 would agree. Would yon?

If you are ever lucky to be invited to a formal dinner party in Paris, remember that the French have their own way of doing things, and that even your finest manners may not be “correct〞 by French custom. For example, if you think showing up promptly at the time given on the invitation, armed with gifts of wine and roses, complimenting your hostess on her cooking, laughing heartily at the host's jokes and then leaping up to help the hostess will make you the perfect guest, think again. Here Madame Nora Chabal, the marketing director of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, explained how it works.
The first duty of the guest is to respond to the invitation within 48 hours. And, the guest may not ask to bring a guest because the hostess has chosen her own.
Flowers sent in advance are the preferred gift. They may also be sent afterwards with a thank-you note. It is considered a very bad form to arrive with a gift of flowers in hand, there by forcing the hostess to deal with timing a vase when she is too busy to do that. See, that's the logic! The type of flowers sent has a code of its own, too. One must never send chrysanthemums because they are considered too humble a flower for occasion. Carnations are considered bad luck, and calla lilies are too reminiscent(令人联想的) of funerals(葬礼). A bouquet of red roses is a declaration of romantic intent. Don't send those unless you mean it-and never to a married hostess. And though the French love wine, you must neverbring a bottle to a dinner party. Why, it's as if you feared your hosts would not have enough wine on hand, and that's an insult. You may, however, offer a box of chocolates which the hostess will pass after dinner with coffee.
If an invitation is for eight o'clock, the considerate guest arrives at 8: 15. Guests who arrive exactly on time or early are mere thoughtless ones who are not giving the hostess those last few minutes she needs to deal with details and c rises. The “correct〞 guest arrives between 15 to 20 minutes after the hour be- cause dinner will be served exactly 30 minutes past the time on the invitation.
45.Which of the following statements is right according to the French custom?
A. When you receive an invitation, reply to it within two days. You'd better send
flowers in advance.
B. Arrive exactly on time at the dinner party.
C. Bring a bottle of good wine to the dinner party.
D. Telephone to ask if you could bring a good friend to the party.
46.Which of the following is right about sending flowers?
A. If someone is dead, send chrysanthemums or calla lilies.
B. If someone is ill in hospital, send carnations.
C. If you are invited to a dinner party, send red roses to the hostess.
D. If you are in love with someone, send red roses.
47.If you are too busy to send flowers in advance, what should you do?
A. Bring a bouquet of flowers when you go to the party.
B. Send a bouquet of flowers afterwards with a thank-you note.
C. Bring a bottle of wine instead of a bouquet of flowers.
D. The hostess will never mind if you send flowers or not.
48.What does the word “considerate〞 in the last paragraph mean?

If American customs seem strange, remember that Americans feel the same way when they visit another country, people living in different cultures do many daily things differently from one another. What a dull(not interesting or boring) the world would be if this were not true!
Some differences are small, and one soon becomes used to them. For example, many people find it strange that Americans move from place to place so often. Born in one city, they may attend school in a second, enter business in a third, and perhaps move several times during their lives. Today, most Americans fully expect and accept the fact that they will move frequently.
However, houses are of great interest to Americans. They spend a lot of time thinking, reading and talking about their homes and how to improve them. They also enjoy looking at other people's houses, since they would enjoy visiting and examining a house in another country, they may suppose that you will probably have the same desire when you visit the United States. So do not be surprised when you visit an American family and are shown every room in the house besides the bathroom and kitchen.

The biggest safety threat(威胁) facing airlines today may not be a man with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the past 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference(电磁干扰). The source of this interference remains unclear, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and mobile telephones.
RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空 ) industry, has suggested that all airlines ban(制止) such devices fr om being used during “key〞stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Nowadays, rules on using these devices are left up to airlines. And although some airlines ban passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are not willing to exercise a total ban, if many passengers want to work during flights.
The difficulty in understanding how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices give off radiation which
affects those wavelengths which aircraft uses for communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.
The fact that aircraft may be in trouble because of the interference raises the danger that some people may use radio systems in order to damage navigation(导航)equipment. As worrying, though,is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud.

B.they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interference
C.the effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved
D.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio
55.Why is it difficult to see the effects of electromagnetic fields on computers? A.Experts lack proper equipment to do such research.
B.It is dangerous to Calty out such research on an airplane.
C.It remains a question what wavelengths are to be interfered with.
D.Scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.
