People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by men’s release of completely new and often artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance, such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of. But while more and more new and complex goods are produced, there will be new and dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste product from nuclear power stations. Many people see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used, in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizers can’t restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying reasons are, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of. Drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which can’t be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine
to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.
36. The main cause of pollution is______.
A. our ever-increasing population
B. increased amounts of a natural substance
C. the release of artificial or natural substance into the environment.
D. the production of new industrial goods.
37. In the writer’s view, the more new goods, _____.
A. the less pollution
B. the harder pollution can be prevented
C. the more easily pollution can be controlled
D. the more pollution there will be
38. Much of the pollution could be controlled if _____.
A. people could pay more attention to the problem.
B. governments would take effective measures.
C. all sides concerned would make more efforts.
D. farmers would use less artificial fertilizers.
39. Many people see pollution as only part of ____
A. the consumption of goods by men
B. the environmental balance
C. our daily life
D. the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods.
40. People can help to solve the problem of pollution by______.
A. asking their governments to control litter and waste.
B. making anti-pollution advertisements
C. cutting down the use of oil and other oil products
D. reducing unnecessary buying, over-consumption and careless disposal of the wastes

When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry(=unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near—sighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant(远处的) things clearly.
People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s l ength. If they want to do much reading ,they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eye s become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object our of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the objec t’s relation to the background
and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.
41. We should take good care of our eyes .
A. only when we can see well
B. only when we cannot see perfectly
C. even if we can see well
D. only when we realize how important our eyes are

C. looking over a wide area
D. judging distances
45. People who suffer from astigmatism have .
A. one eye bigger than the other
B. eyes that are not exactly the right shape
C. a difficulty that can be corrected by an operation
D. an eye difficulty that cannot be corrected by glasses

The most important use of drifting (漂流) bottles is to find ocean currents. When the position and direction of currents are known, ships can use the forward movement of a current or stay away from currents that would carry them off their course. Benjamin Franklin was one of the first to use bottles in the study of currents. He wondered why British mall ships needed a week or two longer than U.S. ships needed in order to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Franklin thought the Gulf Stream (墨西哥湾流) might explain this difference.
Franklin talked with captains of U.S. ships. He found that they knew each turn of the Gulf Stream. They used the current in every possible way. From his talks with the captains. Dear Lily,
I understand how you feel. My mum bought me only second-hand clothes until I was 14 years old. I once talked to her and explained how different I felt from other students. It worked! She started giving me a small amount of money for extra clothes. So, talk to your parents to let them know that clothes are important to you and that you would prefer T-shirts to food on your birthday.
Not all parents can give their children everything they want. Many children have to help out their parents. If your parents can't buy the sorts of clothes you want, think about getting a part time job during the school holidays. With the money you earn, you can buy the clothes you want.
Yours,
Li Hua。
