Is this a coincidence(巧合), or is there some science behind this? Would you like to know more about how the weather can affect how you feel?According to a recent study, there is a connection between weather and moods. Going to a warm place in the middle of winter can make our moods better. Pleasant weather has been proved to improve moods and memory. However, extremely hot weather can actually make us feel more tired and bored, spoiling our moods. In the study, people who spent time outdoors in warm weather were happier than those who spent all day inside. The best temperature for humans is about 22.2℃. That explains why people in southernCalifornia are happy all the time. To improve his or her moods, a person must spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm, sunny weather. Spending time indoors when the weather outside is so nice tends to lower moods.Maybe just the activities connected with being outside affect our moods. Warm weather is connected with the beach, fun outdoor sports and so on. It brings back childhood memories of playing outside all day. Who doesn't love that?Of course, we can wake up every day and decide how we will feel that day. If it's rainy, that won't necessarily make us unhappy. We'll just have to bring our umbrellas out and cheer up those who are feeling sad!(1)According to the study, we may feel on extremely hot days.A. happierB. more boredC. more excitedD. more pleased (2)Warm weather can help improve our moods and according to the passage.A. sightB. memoryC. heightD. hearing(3)Why are people in southern California happy all the time?A. These questions are difficult to answer, aren't they?In fact, the sky has no color. Then why does the sky look blue?We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings. Planes can't fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher. The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1, 200 kilometers from the earth, we'll find no air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they cannot fly or live without air.Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light blue. The color would be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun.Sometimes the sky doesn't look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red, orange, and other colors in the sky. Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.Who can see the colors of the sky high above the earth? The astronauts! They can see those beautiful colors of the sky from the outer space. However, before flying into outer space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky would be that dark and its color would be black. Now you may understand that we see colors because the air scatters(使散射) the sunlight.light travels through the air. Without air, there would be no light or colors.(1)Planes can't fly as high as possible because_________.A. the sky is blueB. the wings are heavierC. the sky has no colorD. the air becomes thinner(2)When you stand on the top of a high mountain, you will see_________.A. more airB. the bluer skyC. more colorsD. more clouds(3)In Ningbo, we might see many colors in the sky at _________during the day.A. 6: 00 a. m.B. 10: 00 a. m.C. 1: 00 p. m.D. 2: 00 p. m.(4)The sky changes colors because____________.A. it's colorful itselfB. the world is colorfulC. the sunlight has colorsD. the air scatters the sunlight6.阅读理解By Anna Matteo28 January, 2019A 3-year-old boy who was lost in the woods for two days is now safe at home with his family. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites(社交媒体网站), companies and governments. One set of data can have people's names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need more help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he, she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong. How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. My mother was one of those people. My father died when I was one year-old. While I was growing up, we led a very hard life, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Bach night, she seated me on her lap and, spoke the words that would change my life," Kemmons, you are sure to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said that I would never walk again. Every might my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me whatever those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I walked on my own to school! When the Great Depression broke out, my mother lost her job. Then I left school to support the two of us. At that moment I decided never to be poor again.Over the years, I experienced a lot of business success. But the real turning point happened on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was very angry, that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for an ordinary American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra money for children. Many people did not believe me at that time. Not surprisingly, mom was my strongest supporter. As in any business, I experienced a lot of difficulties. But with my mom's words in my heart, I never doubted I would succeed. Fifteen years later, I had the largest hotel system in the world- Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $I billion a year. You may not have started out life in the best situations. Kids who regularly take care of themselves are called "latchkey kids".This nickname got its start in the 1940s. Many men fought in the Second World War and women had to take jobs in factories to keep the country going. With both parents away, lots of kids went back to empty houses after school. Latchkey kids wore house keys around their necks and they used the keys to open doors.Today, it's common for both parents to work. As a result, a new generation of kids are spending some time alone after school. It becomes necessary for both parents and kids to make some rules. There are a lot of questions to talk about:Should you call your mum, or dad as soon as you get home?Should you do your homework first? Can you watch TV or play computer games? If so, how long? What can you eat if you want a snack? Can friends come over? If so, how many?……As latchkey kids, knowing how to stay safe is just as important as following the family rules. Talk about the following questions with your parents:What should you do when the phone rings? What should you do if someone knocks at the door? What should you do if someone breaks into the house? What should you do if you cut yourself while cooking?。

Bidder Pays Almost $100,000 to See Mona Lisa Up CloseHow much would you pay to see Da Vinci's Mona Lisa up close, without tourists to block your view? $100? $1,000? More? One online bidder has offered to pay $98,000 to get a closer look at the painting when it’s taken out of its case for a yearly inspection.Visitors normally have to stand about 5 meters from the Mona Lisa, and also fight their way through a large crowd to get a good view. According to Forbes, around 30,000 people came to see the painting per day before the pandemic. The sale was part of an online auction Bid for the Louvre, organized by the museum and auction houses Christie's and Hôtel Drouot to help the Louvre recover from the pandemic. The museum was closed to the public for several months this year, and while the auction has earned about $2.9 million in total, the Louvre is expected to lose around $110 million by the end of the year."Everyone has been able to understand the difficulties that the pandemic has created for cultural institutions, and the Louvre is no exception," President of Christie’s France Cécile Verdier said.Other experiences offered at the auction included a private night tour of the museum, as well as a walk on the rooftops of the Louvre palace with French photographer and street artist JR.。

初中英语教育类阅读Passage 1Not all inventions are made by scientists. Kids can also make history with their inventions. The state flag of Alaska was designed by 13-year-old Bennie Benson in 1926. His design was chosen from a flag-designing competition. It became the official flag in 1959. Bennie won a $1,000 scholarship(奖学金)and a watch.Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle in 1905 when he was only 11 years old. It was called the Epsicle at that time. Frank left his drink outside the door overnight with a stick(木棒)in it. That night the temperature dropped and everything was frozen including Frank’s drink. That didn’t stop him from tasting it, so today we have Popsicles to eat.In 1642 Blaise Pascal designed the first counting machine when he was 18.The machine was for his father, a tax collector, to make his job easier. Blaise named it “the Pasealine”. He made about 50 of them, but nobody was interested in it. However, not all hope is lost. There are some things that you can do to get your kids to help you clean your house. If you are struggling with the chores (家务)and need yourkids to help you, take a look at some of the creative ways in this article. If you are dealing with older kids, you may want to try the allowance deal. You can give your kids a list of chores that need to be done each week. If they complete these chores, you can give them some money. You can also break the list down and tell them they will get so much for each chore that is finished. Older kids , who like to do things on weekends or buy things like video games, will work hard to complete their chores and earn their money. This is also teaching them responsibility. This is teaching them that they must work for what they want.If you are dealing with younger kids, you may want to go with the rewards chart(奖励图表). This is where you design a chart and list their chores on the chart. For each chore they complete, you can put a red flower beside it. For the rewards, you can also do a number of things ,such as going to the park, going out to eat, buying a DVD or something similar. The rewards would be up to you because you know what your kids like. For real small kids, you can turn it into a game. When kids were much younger, you can teach them to dance around and sing as you cleaned. The kids loved it and would do a wonderful job at picking up their toys. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people. Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason. 1.People with little education usually ____.A. spend a long time in schoolB. have a good chance to get a jobC. spend the best years to choose jobsD. have fewer chances to get a good job2.The earliest education was probably to ______.A. make a man lead a better lifeB. teach a man to write and thinkC. make people get a way of livingD. teach people to read good books3.The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means “_______” in Chinese.A. 圆满的B. 崭新的C.公平的D. 全面的4.It is expected that educated people will be able to _____.A. accept education as a way of livingB. take an interest in the whole worldC. develop their abilities to make playsD. learn subjects like language and math5.The passage mainly tells us that _______.A. education should make a man improveB. people can get education in a short timeC. people should be able to get better paying jobsD. all subjects are so important for a way of livingPassage 4It's not easy being a teenager— nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. If your teen has you puzzled and upset, or even refuses to talk to you. the following offers a practical approach to giving your child thespace he needs to grow while gently making him know that you'll be still there for him when he needs you.Offer your help always, but your advice only when asked. If your child is unwilling to discuss a particular topic, don't force him to tell you what's in his mind. Let him attempt to solve things by himself — a sure sign to him that you support his growing independence and the greatest way for him to build self-respect.Don't invade your teenager's space. Show the same respect for his privacy (隐私)that you would show for any adult relatives. Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations. And do avoid going into his room to tidy up when he's not at home. Remember a teenager is old enough to maintain his own room.Mirror only positive (积极的) feelings about physical appearance. Most teenagers are oversensitive about how they look. Although they may be highly critical (批评的) about the way others look or dress, they are often unable to handle such criticism directed toward them. Self-image is very important to teenagers, so keep a cool head about fashions your teen chooses to wear. You should look for ways to support and strengthen any positive comments your child makes about himself. It may seem like a simple step, but talking to your teen about the risks of drugs (毒品) may help keep your teen drug-free. In fact, teens who learn about the dangers of drugs from their parents are less likely to(可能) try drugs than those who learn nothing at home.Try to open up the lines of communication with your teen.1. Many things happen because something caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what causesthe effect. It may help you to start with the effect and use your reasoning (推理的) skills. Think about all the things you know that could be reasons for the effect you can see.For example, you may see someone putting on a heavy jacket. This is the effect. To look for a cause, think to yourself, “What would make someone put on a heavy jacket?” Maybe the person is going outside into very cold weather. Maybe the person works in the penguin pen (企鹅圈养地) at Sea World. Maybe the person is going to visit an ice skating rink where the air is kept very cold. All of these things could be a cause for putting on a heavy jacket. Now, think about a second example. The effect is a boy named Tony has to go to the head teacher’s office. What are the possible causes? Maybe he fought with another student. Maybe he is just being picked up early. Maybe he is being given a prize! Here is another example for you to think about its cause and effect. Carol,13,was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around a bit,but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the hall light for quite a while. Little brothers can be very strange, but this was really much too strange. Carol didn’t know what to do. Just then, Carol’s father appeared and explained that Doug was sleepwalking. What’s the cause and effect, could you tell?1. According to the second paragraph, which of the following is an effect?A. Someone puts on a heavy jacket.B. Someone works in the penguin pen.C. Tim was late again and his teacher got angry.Passage 6Why is it that some people seem to learn several languages without any effort, while for others learning just one foreign language is neither enjoyable nor successful? What makes learning a new language so easy for some and so difficult or others. We each have our own preferred way of learning as a result of our cultural and educational backgrounds and our personalities. Experts have identified different learning styles.Visual Learners usually enjoy reading and prefer to see an image of the words they are learning. They like looking at pictures and flashcards. Auditory Learners, on the other hand, prefer to learn by listening. They enjoy conversations and talking to others. They don’t need to see words written down. One study revealed that Japanese students tend to be Visual Learners, while English-speaking American, prefer the auditory learning style. Some people like to learn by using their hands to touch objects, while others like to move around and need frequent breaks from sitting at a desk. There are Analytical Learners, meaning they enjoy understanding how the language works. They love studying grammar rules and like to focus on details, whereas Global Learners are more interested in communicating their ideas and are not worried about whether what they say is grammatically correct. In spoken English, the Japanese tend to be Reflective Learners. They think carefully before they speak to ensure their message is accurate. They do not make so many mistakes but their communication is slower. European learners tend to be mote Impulsive Learners. They speak morefluently and worry about how well they are communicating rather than how many mistakes they are making. So, to do well in a language, you should identify your style and try to find a class that will teach you the way you want to learn. For example, if you are a Reflective Learner, you may not do so well in a purely conversational class and as an Auditory Learner, you probably don’t want to do so much reading. In fact if you are an Auditory Learner, you are probably not enjoying yourself right now!1. The passage mainly talks about ______.A. the difficult learning styles of some peopleB. the easy learning ways of, other peopleC. the different learning styles of the JapaneseD. the different learning methods of all the people2. Which of the following phrases isn’t connected with the learning style?A. The way people are taught to learn a language.B. The place where people are from.C. The size of people.D. The kind of person people are.3. Visual Learners like to ______.A. see thingsB. touch thingsC. hear thingsD. do things4. Auditory Learners like to ______.A. hear thingsB. buy thingsC. destroy thingsD. paint things5. Analytical Learners ______.A. are similar to Global LearnersB. never worry about mistakesC love to study details D. do well in conversationPassage 7For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad points in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.You do not have to be spineless (优柔寡断的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked or loved if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights (正当行为). But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character. You cannot expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed if he does not refuse to learn from them. Many youngpeople become discouraged (灰心丧气的) when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults (缺点) and have to fight against them.At the same time, it is important to remember that while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you do not like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why, and look at yourself, too, to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right when you have to learn to get along the best with the situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you cannot change.1. One of the two ways the writer suggests for us to get along with others is to __________.A. work hard at everything we doB. enjoy the best share of everythingC. look for treasure in order to be successfulD. pay more attention to their strong points2.If a person wants to be popular, he or she has to __________.A. be polite and friendlyB. give up some rightsC. get away arguing with other peopleD. be ready to changehis or her character3.There is no person but someone should be blamed if he or she __________.A. is modest and generousB. is selfish and lazyC. does not draw a lesson from his or her own faultD. is very happy with unpleasant quality4.The purpose for the writer to write the passage is to __________.A. train you to be perfectB. show you the way to be happyC. tell you how to act when you dislike a personD. teach you how to be popular among your friendsPassage 8Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and even fight. They often do something dangerous.Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs. In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely. Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior? As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”1. What does the underlined word “irrational” in the 2nd paragraph mean?A. Quick.B. Crazy.C. Careful.2. Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to thetext?A. They like difficult tasks.B. They don’t care about costs.C. They care a lot about what their peers think of them.3. How does Laurence explain the influence of peer pressure on teens’ behavior?A. By comparing it with how a car works.B. By comparing it with an accident.C. By showing research findings.4. What can we learn from the text?A. Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents.B. Peer influence is bad on teenagers.C. Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up.Passage 9Some people think only school children don’t agree with their parents, however, it is not true.Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (消除代沟).Don’t argue(争辩)with your parents.Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well ifyou are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.Try to reach a compromise(和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!1. The passage tells us ______ have a communication problem.A. parents and other peopleB. school kids and their parentsC. teachers and their studentsD. parents and children of all ages2. From the passage we learn that ______.A. parents and children should not have a generation gapB. parents should show love and respect to their childrenC. there are some good ways to bridge the generation gapD. there are so many serious problems in families todayPassage 10Some people believe that classes, teachers and school buildings will no longer be necessary in the near future because of the Internet and other new technology. Perhaps this will be true one day, but if the world has noschools, I can't imagine how our society will be. In fact, we should learn how to use new technology to make schools better. We should invent a new kind of school connected to libraries, museums, science centers, labs and even companies. Technological companies should create learning programs for schools. Scientists could give talks through the Internet. TV networks and local stations could develop programs about things students are studying in school. Labs could set up websites to show new technology, so students could see it on the Internet. Is this a dream? No. There have been many cities where this is beginning to happen. Here the whole city is connected to the Internet, and learning can take place at home, at school, and in the office. Businesses provide programs for the schools and the society. The schools provide computer labs for people without their own computers at home. Because everyone can go on the Internet, older people use it as much as younger ones, and everyone can visit faraway libraries and museums as easily as nearby ones. How will this new thing of school change the usual way of learning? It is a little early to be sure, but it is very exciting to think about it. Technology will change the way we learn; schools will change as well; and we will learn something from the Internet.1. Who thinks that students won’t have to go to school?A. Everyone.B. The writer.C. Some people.D. The teachers.2. What does “a new kind of school” mean in the passage?A. A school with many new computers.B. A school with many new students.C. A school with many new teachers.D. Because whole city is connected to the Internet.B. Because everyone can go on the Internet.C. Because getting online is very easy.D. Because Scientists could give talks through the Internet.5. What fact does the passage NOT provide?A. Technology will change our way of learning.B. If you are a student, you can set up websites to show new technology.C. The schools provide computer labs for those who have no personal computers.D. On the Internet, you can visit another city's libraries as easily as the people there.Passage 11Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, destroying (摧毁) fourteen homes. Every half hour, the water bowl becomes full and sinks completely. This causes a ball to fall from the top of the clock. The movement of the ball causes a phoenix to move and make a sound.
The ball then drops out of a falcon's mouth into the mouth of a Chinese dragon. The weight of the ball causes the dragon's head to move down, and the dragon's tail pulls the water bowl back up.
抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。
