7高考英语二轮复习专题训练阅读理解(7)133.docx

高考英语二轮复习专题训练:阅读理解(附参考答案)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

AFrom good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction. With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely. Whether the characters portrayed are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. In the pages of books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold dear or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. Our human friends sometimes may bore us, but the friends we make in books need never weary us with their company. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement. One of the most valuable gifts bestowed by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner or stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire. Through books we may get the thrill of hazardous adventure without danger. We can climb lofty mountains, brave the perils of an Antarctic winter, or cross the scorching sands of the desert, all without hardship. In books we may visit the studios of Hollywood; we may mingle with the gay throngs of the Paris boulevards; we may join the picturesque peasants in an Alpine village or the kindly natives on a South Sea island. Indeed, through books the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architecture, the marvels of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.1. They never hurt our feelings.3. Which of the following is true?A. Your wish to visit some far-off place can be realized through the pages of the books.B. When you select your career, there's a whole lot more to it than assessing your skills and matching them with a particular position. If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job's pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are a few of those main areas;1) Do you prefer working alone or with other people? There are isolating(使孤立)jobs that will drive an outgoing person crazy and also interactive jobs that will make a shy person uneasy. Most people are not extremes in either direction but do have a tendency that they prefer. There are also positions that are sometimes a combination of the two, which may be best for someone in the middle who adapts easily to either situation.2) How do you handle change? Most jobs these days have some elements of change to them, but some are more than others. If you need stability in your life, you may need a job where the changes don't happen so often. Other people would be bored of the same daily routine.3) Do you enjoy working with computers?I do see this as a kind of personality characteristic. There are people who are happy to spend more than 40 hours a week on a computer, while there are others who need a lot of human interaction throughout the day. Again, these are extremes and you'll likely find a lot of positions somewhere in the middle as well.4) What type of work environment do you enjoy? This can range from being in a large building with a lot of people you won't know immediately to a smaller setting where you'll get to know almost all the people there fairly quickly.5) How do you like to get paid? Some people are motivated by the pay they get, while others feel too stressed to be like that. The variety of payment designs in the sales industry is a typical example for this.Anyway, these are a great starting point for you. I've seen it over and over again with people that they make more money over time when they do something they love. It may take you a little longer, but making a move to do what you have a passion for can change the course of your life for the better.6. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Isolating jobs usually drive people mad.B. Interactive jobs make people shy easily.C. Extreme people tend to work with others.D. Almost everyone has a tendency in jobs.7. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph one mean?A. Before you select your job, you should assess your skills and match them with your positionB. There are more important things than assessing skills and match them with the position when you select job.C. Nothing is important than assessing skills and match them with the position when you select job.D You should ignore your skills when you select job.8. His struggles developed in him sympathy for the working class and a lasting dislike of hard work and provided inspiration for his career as a writer.London grew up in San Francisco in extreme poverty. At an early age, he left school and supported himself through a succession of un skilled jobs ----working as a paper boy, in bowling alleys, on ice wagons, and in canneries(罐头食品厂)and mills. Despite working long hours at these jobs, London was able to read constantly, borrowing travel and adventure books from the library. The books London read inspired him to travel, and his job experiences led him to become active in fighting for the fights of workers. He sailed to Japan on a journey aiming at catching seals and joined a cross-country protest march with a group of unemployed workers. After being arrested for vagrancy near Buffalo, New York, London decided to educate himself and reshape his life. He quickly completed high school and entered the University of California. After only one term, however, the appeal of fortune and adventure proved uncontrollable. London gave up his studies and traveled to the Alaskan Yukon in 1897 in search of gold. Jack London was among the first of these miners. He may have searched for more than gold, however. London once commented, “ True, the new region was mostly poor; but its several hun dred thousand square miles of coldness at least gave breathing space to those who else would have choked at home.” Although he was unsuccessful as a miner, London’s experiences in Alaska taught him about the human desire for wealth and power and about huma nkind’s inability to control the forces of nature. While in Alaska, London also absorbed memories and stories that would make him known one hundred years later.Once back in California, London became determined to earn a living as a writer. He rented a typewriter and worked up to fifteen hours a day, spinning his Alaskan adventures into short stories and novels.According to legend, London’s piles of rejection slips from publishers grew to five feet in height!Even so, London preserved. In 1903, he earned national fame when he published the popular novel The Call of the Wild. He soon became the highest paid and most industrious writer in the country. During his career, he produced more than fifty books and earned more than amillion dollars. Several of his novels, including The Call of the Wild(1903),the Sea-Wolf(1904),the White Fang(1906),have become American classics. In fact, he was a creative writer whose fiction explored several regions and their cultures: the Yukon, California, Hawaii, and the Solomon Islands. He experimented with many literary forms, from traditional love stories and dystopias(反面乌托邦小说)to science fantasy. His noted journalism included war communication, boxing stories, and the life of Molokai lepers(麻风病患者). He was among the most influential figures of his day, who understood how to create a public persona and use the media to market his self-created image of poor-boy-turned-success. London's great passion was agriculture, and he was well on the way of creating a new model for spreading through his Beauty Ranch when he died of kidney disease at age 40. He left over fifty books of novels, stories, journalism, and essays, many of which have been translated and continue to be read around the world. His best works describe a person’s struggle for survival against the powerful forces of nature. “To Build a Fire”, for example, tells the story of a man’s fight to survive the harsh cold of the Alaskan winter.10._________made Jack London reconsider his life in the future.A. All of above.DIf your preschoolers turn up their noses at carrots or celery, a small reward like a sticker for taking even a taste may help get them to eat previously disliked foods, a UK study said.Though it might seem obvious that a reward could encourage young children to eat their vegetables, the idea is actually controversial, researchers wrote in the American Journal of Clinic al Nutrition. That’s because some studies have shown that rewards can backfire and cause children to lose interest in foods they already liked, said Jane Wardle, a researcher at University College London who worked on the study. Verbal praise, such as “Brilliant! You’re a great vegetable taster,” did not work as well. The study found t hat when parents gave their small children a sticker each time they took a “tiny taste” of a disliked vegetable, it gradually changed their attitudes. The children were also willing to eat more of the vegetables-either carrots, celery, cucumber, red pepper, cabbage or sugar snap peas-in laboratory taste tests, the study said.Researchers randomly assigned(分派)173 families to one of these groups. In one, parents used stickers to reward their children each time they took a tiny sample of a disliked vegetable. A second group of parents used verbal praise. The third group, where parents used no special vegetable-promoting methods, served as a “control”.Parents in the reward groups offered their children a taste of the “target” vegetable every day of 12 days, Soon after, children in the sticker group were giving higher ratings to the vegetables-and were willing to eat more in the research lab, going from an average of 5 grams at the start to about 10 grams after the 12-day experience. The turnaround also seemed to last, with preschoolers in the sticker group still willing to eat more of the once disliked vegetable three months later. Why didn’t the verbal praise work? Wardle said the parents’ words may have seemed “insincere” to their children.16.The purpose of writing the passage is .A.to introduce a practical method of making children eat vegetablesB.to show the procedure of an experiment on children’s dietC.to explain why children hate to eat vegetablesD.to present a proper way of vernal praise to parents17.The underlined word “backfire”in Paragraph 2 probably means “”. AIt was a warm April day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word ―congratulations.‖I don’t remember ever smiling so wide. Then I looked at my financial(财政的)package. The cost of Dream School’s tuition(学费), room and board was around $ 40,000- an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren’t as famous as my first choice. In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn’t sure what to do.One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents’ financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself. At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus(校园)including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring. As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there. In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my ―dream‖ university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.1. How did the author feel when he started to read the letter?A. He was full of joy.B. He was lost in his dream.C. He was worried about the money.D. He was uncertain which school to go to.2. We can learn from the passage that the parents were ____________ .A. honestB. strictC. supportiveD. decisive3. In Paragraph 5, ―offered me a full ride‖ can be replaced by ―____________‖.A. would pay for transport to the schoolB. would show me around the campusC. would offer free meals at all eventsD. would charge me nothing for tuition4. What does the author mainly want to say?A. Your second-choice college may actually by your best fit.B. You should consider comfort in your choice of schools.C. You should try your best to attend your dream school.D. Your choice of schools should be based on their fame.BPeople often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental conditional that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It’s something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my o pinion, it’s a waste of time. I don’t mean that we should do nothing about it; quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basis fact of our shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往)with different people every night, in front of a national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend(传奇)among talk show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感)and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever our shyness took root in our soul.5. In the author’s view, shyness can be explained as ____________ .A. a disease that can be easily curedB. a not very normal mental conditionC. an emotional disabilityD. something we pick up after birth6. The author believes it’s a waste of time to ____________ .A. develop a healthy personalityB. talk with as many people as possibleC. study where shyness comes fromD. look for ways to do away with one’s shyness7. Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson?A. He dared to speak in front of a national audienceB. he did away with his shyness carefullyC. He was described as a hero in some legend booksD. He failed to become a good talk show host8. The passage tells us that Sally Fields was ____________ .A. proud all the timeB. impolite when youngC. shy in her early yearsD. close to Jane FondaCHow Parents Can HelpUnfortunately, learning does not simply happen. As a mother and ex-teacher, I believe that good education involves not only the pupil and the teacher but also the parents. What, then, is the parents' role? The atmosphere at home is bound to influence a child's attitude toward schoolwork. Parents should be positive and notice what their children do well, rewarding success with praise and occasional treats. Under no circumstances should children be made to look foolish for their efforts. Tell a child often enough that he is lazy or stupid and he is likely to become an adult without self-respect. Listening is also vital. Children need to be taken seriously, no matter how unimportant their ideas may appear. It lets them know that their opinions and feelings matter. We must be observant: able to detect physical signs of unhappiness. A child w ho keeps on complaining of headaches or sickness may well be crying out for help. He may not be up to the work demanded of him. On the other hand, it could be an indication of boredom. On no account should a child feel unable to approach his parents. The lines of communication must be kept open.At the same time, we can help our children to become more independent, and consequently better learners, by giving them a few regular domestic chores that they can carry out successfully. In their free time, active rather than passive pleasures should be encouraged. In other words, reading is preferable to watching television. Above all, we must set an example. Children, in the end, will do as we do, not as we say. If we take an interest in hobbies, so will our children. As they grow older, homework must be their responsibility. We can be of most use not by doing it for them(even if we are able to)but by discussing the problem and helping them to approach it in the correct way. In addition, we must ensure that the necessary space and equipment are provided. Teenagers need a quiet, well-lit area in which to study, with access to dictionaries and reference books. At this difficult age, although they may not show it, they also need to know that we care.9. According to the text, parents should____________ .A. not criticize their childrenB. be very strict with their childrenC. give more encouragement to their childrenD. influence their children's attitude toward schools10. The underlined part "Listening is also vital"(in Para. 2)means that it is also important _______ .A. for children to listen to their parents' adviceB. for parents to take their children's ideas seriouslyC. for parents to notice what their children do wellD. for children to know their parents' opinions and feelings11.

Being home most of your life and then suddenly finding yourself on your own in a large campus without your parents to hold your hand can be annoying. However, rather than thinking about your missing home too much, why not see this new stage in your life as an opportunity for selfgrowth and develop the right attitude that will prepare you for the rigors of postgraduation life, particularly when you join the workforce? Specialinterest clubs or organizations are great for selfgrowth. Here, not only do you get the opportunity to meet with likeminded people, you can also discover more things about your field of interest.Club meetings usually include lively discussions,so go there with the right attitude. You should try to build a good name in the organization by being respectful, active and considerate to others. You might not like all of your professors, but they are there to provide knowledge you need to be successful in your chosen field. Thus, show up for each class with the right attitude and determination to learn.Whether you get along well with your professors or not has a huge effect on your selfgrowth as it is a measure of how well you can respect authority and obey requirements.Actively participating in a class debate(辩论) or lecture contributes to your selfgrowth as it helps you build confidence in speaking up and improves your communication skills. It also helps you develop the right attitude by exercising diplomacy(外交术) when you choose your words carefully especially when discussing a very politically sensitive issue and exercising patience when dealing with classmates who shoot down your ideas.【小题1】In the writer’s opinion, how can college students develop a positive attitude?A.By joining specialinterest clubs.B.By focusing on their studies.C.By taking up parttime jobs.D.By making friends with others.【小题2】According to the text, college students should do many things EXCEPT ________.A.forget the familyB.be respectful at club meetingsC.try to attend each classD.take an active part in a class debate【小题3】We can learn from the text that ________.A.college life is very interestingB.friendship can help college students avoid stressC.students should choose words carefully at any occasionD.it is important to have a good teacherstudent relationship【小题4】The purpose of the text is to ________.A.introduce how to show yourself in collegeB.tell college students how to socialize with othersC.give college students some advice on selfgrowthD.explain the importance of fouryear college life11.Everything seemed to be going ________for the first two days after I moved to New York. It’s not rare for a family to have two top tennis players.Safina’s father owns a tennis academy and her mother w orked as a coach.“I had no choice but to become a tennis player, but I don’t mind being a tennis player,” Safina said. From this talented family she is also given one of her best weapons on court, her size. She is 1.82 meters tall and weighs 70kg.But it is hard work that led her to her recent success.“I hope to prove to everyone over the coming months that I deserve the honor of being world No.1,”she said.【小题1】What is the passage mainly about?A.How Safina came first in women’s tennis.B.How the parents taught Safina to play tennis.C.How her brother helped Safina play tennis.D.How Safina beat her brother in playing tennis.【小题2】Which one of the following doesn’t contribute to Safina’s success? AParents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.“I would never have said to my mom, …Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?‟” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent—child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue int0 adulthood. No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There‟s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon V alley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.“My parents were on the …before‟ side of that change, but today‟s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the …after‟ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It‟s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests doesmake it more fun to be a parent now.”41. And paying someone else to do the chores(家务活) which take the average housewife 71 hours a week would cost €349.At over €18,000 a year that‟s more than the earnings of 70 percent of the population, including train drivers, firemen, prison officers, and social worker. Looking after a baby less than a year old takes a housewife into a even higher pay league. According to a study, she earns €457 a week – at nearly €24,000 a year, the same as teachers, engineers, and ch emists.Researchers put a price on each chore, then tried to find out how long the average person takes doing them. They found housewives spend an average 70.7 hours a week on housework – with looking after the children (17.9hours) and cooking and cleaning (12.9 hours each) the most time-consuming(费时).A wife with a part-time job still works and average of 59 hours a week at home. Those in full-time employment put in longer hours at home than in the workplace. The good news is that these hours sharply as children get older. While the average mother with child under one puts in 90 hours weekly, the figure drops to 80 hours from one to four and to 66 hours from five to ten.Mother-of-four Karen Williams from London said, “Paying the housewives may not be practical, but the government should recognize the value of housework, perhaps through the tax. Running a house takes a lot of time and most husbands don‟t understand this. For example, my husband only puts a shelf up now and again. He never cleans the kitchen –that‟s the real test.”40. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him. Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. But early horses weren’t tame (驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled bythe animals’ genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of houses would show more of these chosen characteristics.Modern day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn’t exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horse were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new from of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world.5. Before domestication horses were ______.A. caught for sportsB. hunted for foodC. made to pull ploughsD. used to carry people6. The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to show ______.A. it is smaller than the Clydesdale horseB. horse used to have gentle personalitiesC. some horses have better shaped than othersD. horses were of less variety before domestication7. Horses contributed to the spread of culture by ______.A. carrying heavy loadsB. changing farming methodsC. serving as a means of transportD. advancing agriculture in different areas8. The passage is mainly about _______.A. why humans domesticated horsesB. how humans and horses needed each otherC. why horses came in different shapes and sizesD. how human societies and horses influenced each otherCIt is often necessary to release a fish, that is, set it free after catching, because it is too small, or you just don’t want to take it home to eat. In som e cases, releasing fish is a good measure that will help keep fish variety and build their population size. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) encourages fishermen who practice catch-and-release fishing to use a few simple skills when doing so. The advice provided below will help make sure that the fish you release will survive to bite again another day.—When catching a fish, play it quickly and keep the fish in the water as much as possible. Don’t use a net in landing the fish and releas e it quickly to prevent it from dying.—Hold the fish gently. Do not put your fingers in its eyes. Don’t wipe the scales (鱼鳞) off the fish because it might cause it to develop a disease and reduce its chance of survival.—Remove your hook (鱼钩) quickly. If the hook is too deep or hooked in the stomach, cut the line and leave the hook in. The hook left inside will cause no serious problem to the fish. —Take good care of the fish by moving it gently in water. Release the fish when it begins to struggle and is able to swim.—Do not hold fish in a bucket or some other containers and later decide to release it. If you are going to release a fish, do so right away. With a little care and by following the suggestions given above, you can give the released fish a better chance of survival.9. People sometimes set a fish free after catching it because they _________.A. don’t want it to dieB. hope it will grow quicklyC. don’t want to have it as foodD. want to practice their fishing skills10. Which of the following will probably make a fish ill?A. Taking the hook off it.B. Removing its scales.C. Touching its eyesD. Holding it in your hand.11. A proper way to release a fish is to _________.A. move it in water till it can swimB. take the hook out of its stomachC. keep it in a bucket for some timeD. let it struggle a little in your hand12. What is the purpose of the test?A. To show how to enjoy fishing.B. To persuade people to fish less often.C. To encourage people to set fish free.D. To give advice on how to release fish.DWhen it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share. When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say, “Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped. When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend, He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other. For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimesin a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: “Yes, I must tell….”We have never met.It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家),who will only fill up the healing(愈合的)silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.13. In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to ______.A. become serious about her studyB. go to her friend’s house regularlyC. learn from her classmates at schoolD. share poems and stories with her friend14. In Paragraph 3, “We gave London to each other” probably means ______.A. our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of usB. we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from LondonC. our unpleasant feeling about London disappearedD. we parted with each other in London15. According to Paragraph 4, the author and her friend _______.A. call each other regularlyB. have similar personalitiesC. enjoy writing to each otherD. dream of meeting each other16. What is the best title for the passage?A. Unforgettable ExperiencesB. Remarkable ImaginationC. Lifelong FriendshipD. Noble CompanionsE“Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise.” said Dr. Hans Selye, the first p hysician to document the effects of stress on the body. While here’s no question that continuous stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging situations in which you’re able to rise to the occasion can be good for you.In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but coped with(设法处理)the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health than those who felt they couldn’t get the job done.Stress that you can manage may also boost immune(免疫的) function. In a study at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, researchers put volunteers through two stressful experiences. In the first, a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test, subjects believed they had control over the outcome. In the second, they weren’t in control: They had to sit through a gory(血淋淋的) video on surgical procedures. Those who did go on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that's the body’s first line of defense against germs. The video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody.Stress prompts the body to produce certain stress hormones(荷尔蒙). In short bursts these hormones have a positive effect, including improved memory function. “They can help nerve cel ls handle information and put it into storage,” says Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York. But in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain.“Sustained stress is not good for you,” s ays Richard Morimoto, a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois studying the effects of stress on longevity(长寿), “It’s the occasional burst of stress or brief exposure to stress that could be protective.”17. The passage is mainly about ________.A. the benefits of manageable stressB. how to avoid stressful situationsC. how to cope with stress effectivelyD. the effects of stress hormones on memory18. The underlined word “shun” (Line 1, Para.1) most probably means________.A. cut down onB. stay away fromC. run out ofD. put up with19.
