北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试2015.05.09Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D, You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school longer and earned more money than those who were given formula (配方奶粉).“Breast-feeding not only has short-term benefits, but also breast-feeding has long-term benefits, "says Bernardo Lessa Horta of the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, who led the study being published in The Lancet Global Health.(76) Doctors have long known that breast-feeding can be good for a baby’s health. This is especially true in poor countries, where water can be contaminated. For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 times more likely to die in the first six months than one who’s breast-fed. In the U.S., some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby’s IQ(智商)by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姐妹)found little advantage to breast-feeding.Horta says these previous studies didn’t follow children into adulthood to see if breast-feeding had long-term effects. So Horta analyzed data collected from 3,493 volunteers he and his colleagues have been following since birth. They are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those who were breast-fed for 12 months or more had IQ test scores that were 3.76 points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team found. When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear difference: Those who were breast-fed the longest stayed in school for about an extra year and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.1. Her mother was once a slave in a rich woman’s house. When Maggie was very young, a thief killed her father. Her family was impoverished, so Maggie's mother started doing laundry in her home. Maggie had to help her. She washed clothes every day, but she continued to go to school. She was a very good student, especially in math. After Maggie graduated from high school, she got a job as a teacher. In 1886, she married Armistead Walker. They had two sons and Maggie stayed home to care for them. She also volunteered to help a social organization called the Order of St. Luke. This organization helped African Americans take care of the sick and bury the dead. Maggie Walker loved the work of the organization. The organization believed that African Americans should take care of each other.Over the years, Maggie Walker had more and more responsibilities with the organization. In 1895, she suggested that St. Luke begin a program for young people. (77) This program became very popular with schoolchildren. In 1899, Walk became Grand Secretary Treasurer of the St. Luke organization. However, because she was a woman, she received less than half the salary of the man who had the job before her.The Order of St. Luke had a lot of financial difficulties when Walker took over. It hada lot of unpaid bills and only $31.61 in the bank. But soon Maggie Walker changed all of that.(78) Her idea was to get new members to join the Organization. Using Music to Change Your MoodEveryone knows that listening to music when feeling bad can provide a relief.Music can also reduce stress, make depression more bearable and help you relax. All the benefits of music can only be got if the listener enjoys the music he is listening to.If the listener dislikes the music or finds it boring,it will have a negative effect on him instead of a positive one.Now let's examine what most of us do when it comes to listening to music. We usually just listen to a play list and allow a program to randomly(任意的)select the songs we are going to listen to.This is where the program lies. What if you liked the first song but found the second one boring? What if the third one was a motivating song while the fourth didn’t suit your emotions? What do you think the result will be?What you'll have is an emotional mess! The first song will lift your mood a little. The second will make you a little bored. The third will motivate you and then the fourth will put you down.Inthe end you’ll end up feeling worse than before.I strongly recommend dividing your play list into different small lists. For example,a list for relaxation,a list for motivation and so on.Another very important thing you must do is to get rid of all of the old music that you are bored of.Besides, don't listen to songs with negative words or messages. The music you listen to can delay your recovery from breakups(分手)by months and months! People who listen to romantic songs after breakups recover10times slower than those who don't. So be careful with your play list if you want to recover faster.1.Music is believed to have a comforting effect.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2.One can benefit from all kinds of music.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given3.People tend to listen to music selectively______.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given4.People generally prefer motivating songs.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given5.You should listen to songs that suit your emotions.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6.It's advisable to have different lists of songs______.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given7.You should remove all of the old music from your list______.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8.People should listen to songs with positive words______.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9.Romantic songs help people recover from breakups faster______.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10.Many people like romantic songs______.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(第11~15题,每题2分,共10分)阅读下面短文,请从短文后所给各题的4个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出1个最佳选项,并在答题卡相应位置上将该项涂黑。

201511月1日北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试真题及答案解析

北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试2014年11月1日Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Jarden Zinc (锌) Products, a large zinc plant a few miles outside Greeneville, Tennessee, has a special claim. Since 1982, it has been the only supplier of penny blanks for the U.S. Mint (铸币厂). It's a good business for Jarden-since 2000, the company has earned more than $ 800 million. But it may not be a good deal for the U.S.(76) The value of the penny has been dropping for years. In 2006, it began to cost more than a penny to make a penny. It now costs 2 C to produce a 1 C coin. Many countries have stopped using pennies. Is it time for the U.S. to do the same?Jarden and the zinc industry are fighting to keep the penny. Since 2006, Jarden has given $1.2 million to Americans for Common Cents (ACC). The group's mission is to keep the penny in use. Mark Weller is ACC's executive director. He argues that there are three main reasons for keeping the penny: Without it, we would become more reliant on the five-cent coin, which also has problems; charities (慈善机构) that depend on penny drives would not be able to raise as much money; and a 2012 survey shows that 67% of Americans want to keep the penny. (77) Many people surveyed said they feared they would end up paying more for products. Many experts disagree with ACC, They point to the dozens of countries that have gotten rid of their lowest-value coins without raising prices for consumers. And charities don't seem too concerned either.President Barack Obama says the mint could explore using cheaper metals to make pennies. Steel is less expensive than zinc. Pennies are 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. But no matter what it is made of, the penny's days may be numbered. Most in-store purchases are now made with credit cards, not cash. Is it time for a change?1. what is the main idea of the passage?A. Many countries are trying to reduce the cost of making coins.B. These days a penny made is a penny wasted.C. He was the second of eight children. His father always had problems with money. When Charles was 12 years old, his father went to prison because he was in debt. Charles had to leave school to help his family. He got a job in a dirty, old factory. Charles Dickens never forgot his difficult childhood. Many of his stories and books were about poor people and their problems.(78) Later, Charles went back to school for two more years. He left school when he was 15 years old to become a newspaper reporter. In 1836, he began to write The Pickwick Papers. It was published as a series and was a huge success. By age 24, Dickens was a prominent writer in both Great Britain and the United States. Many people bought his books, but they also paid to hear him read his stories aloud. Because there was no radio or television, people liked to hear famous writers read in public. Dickens read his works like he was acting in a play. He went on very successful reading tours and earned a lot of money.Dickens was meticulous (过分注意琐事的). Everything had to be just right. When he worked at home, everything had to be in its place. He worked at a desk by a window that always had a vase (花瓶) of flowers and the same ornaments (装饰物) on it. (79) He wrote 2, 000 words a day and he required complete quiet while he wrote. Answer Sheet with o single line throught the center.16、根据以下内容回答16-35题:The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discu-ssion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces.1ess and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population.Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth val了from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources,it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate.Whatever the consequences may be.In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more Com-plex.A decreasing birth rate may lead tp unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened.Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which iS stable or in decline.A smaller population may mean__________ .A.higher productivity, but a lower average incomeB.lower productivity, but a higher average incomeC.lower productivity, and a lower average incomeD.higher productivity, and a higher average income17、According to the passage,a large population will provide a chance for stableD.is out of control19、According to the passage, slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for__________ .A.a developed nationB.a developing nationC.every nation with a big populationD.every nation with a small population20、It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because__________ .A.there are too many underdeveloped countries in the worldB.underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial developmentC.different governments have different views about the problemD.even developed countries may have complex problems21、根据以下内容回答21-40题:A youngster's social development has a profound effect on his academic progress.Kids who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind academically as well and have a higher chance of dropping out(退学).In the early grades especially, experts say, youngsters should be encouraged to work in groups rather than individually so that teachers can spot children who may be having problems making friends.“When children work on a pro-ject,”says Lillian Kate,an educational professor at the University of Illinois,“they learn to work together,to disagree,to think to take turns and lighten tensions. These skims can’t be learned through lecture. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but don’t have anysocial skills.Relationships should be the first R.”At a certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation to others. For most children, school marks the first time that their goals are not set by an internal clock but by the outside world.Just as the l-year-old struggling to walk the 6-year-old is struggling to meet adult expectations.“Young kids don’t know how to distinguish early-childhood education for the state of New Jersey,if they try hard to do something and fail, they may conclude that they will never be able to accomplish a particular task. The effects is serious,”says Hills,“a child who has had his confidence really damaged needs a rescue operation.”The author seems to think that a kid’S poor relationship with his classmates would__________ .A.have negative effects on his studyB.develop his individualism but limit his intelligenceC.eventually lead to his leaving schoolD.have nothing to do with his achievements in a course22、In the first paragraph.the effort and one’s ability can be two quite different matters D.social needs and individual needs have nothing in common24、Which of the following is most unlikely for the authoi to do?A.To talk to the the major concern of the passage about a student’s needs?A.Individualism and cooperation..B.Academic Success and independent thinkin9.C.Socialization and feeling of competence.D.Intelligence and respect.26、根据以下内容回答26-45题:It is well known that when an individual joins a group he tends to accept the group’s stand-ards of behavior and thinkin9.He is expected to behave in accordance with these norms——in other words the group expects him to conform. Many illustrations could be given of this from everyday life, but what is of particular interest to psychologists is the extent to which people’s judgments and opinions can be changed as a resuh of group pressure. In a typical experiment, the experimenter ask for volunteers to join a group whicii is inves tigating visual perception. The victims are not, therefore, aware of the real purpose of the ex-periment.Each volunteer is taken to a room where he finds a group of about seven people who are collaborating with the experimenter. The group is shown a standard card which contains a single line. They are then asked to look at a second card. This has three lines on it.One is ob-viously longer than the line on the first card, one is shorter and one the same length. They have to say which line on the second card is the same length as the line on the standard card. The other members of the group answer first but what the volunteer does not know is that they have been told to pick one of the wrong lines. The volunteer sees that the other members of the group unanimously choose a line which is obviously not the same length as the one on the standard card. When it is his turn to answer he is faced with the unanimous opinion of the rest of the gmup—all the others have chosen line A but he quite clearly sees line B as correct. What will he do?According to Asch, more than half of the victims chosen will change their opinion. What is equally surprising is that, when interviewed about their answers, most explained that they knew the group choice was incorrect but that they yielded to the pressure of the group because they thought they must be suffering from an optical illusion.Psychologists are interested in__________ .A.how far group pressure can influence people’s judgmentsB.how to make judgments according to everyday experienceC.how to change people’s judgmentsD.the group’s standards of social behavior27、In the experiment.who have been told to.pick the wrong line?A.The victims.B.The volunteer.C.The experimenter.D.The other members.28、In what circumstances do most people yield to pressure?A.When the group is under group pressure30、The best title of this passage would be__________A.A Typical Experiment.B.Are We Afraid to Be Different?C.The Group’S Standards of Behavior and Thinkin9.D.Does Individual Need stmnger. The notion of“culture shock”helps explain feelings of bewilderment(困惑)and disorientation.Language problems do not account for all the frustrations(挫败)that people feel. When one is deprived of everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register for university classes,Ot knowing how to make friends, difficulties in coping with the new thecuhure. When this happens visitors may want t0·reject everything about the new environment and may glorify and exaggerate(夸大)the positive aspects of their own culture.Conversely visitors may scorn their native country by rejecting its values and instead choosing to identify with(if only temporarily)the value of the new country. This may occur as an attempt to over—identify with the new culture For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneA few centuies ago, people looked at the birds and wondered what it would be like to fly like them. There were stories of heroes who glued bird feathers on their arms and flew up into the sky. About 500 years ago, some people dreamed a different dream. Instead of flying up to the sky, they dreamed of falling from the sky!In the 15th century, Italian inventors designed a cone-shaped(锥形) device that was supposed to bring a man down safely from a great height. The operator held on to a handle with a straps strapped to his waist. This was the first known design for a parachute (降落伞).Even the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci sketched a type of parachute. His parachute design was in the shape of pyramid(金字塔). Other inventors also sketched their own designs for a parachute. Unfortunately, these were only designs on paper and no one tested them.A Croatian inventor named Fausto Veranzio looked at Leonardo da Vinci 's parachute design and replaced the pyramid shape with one that looked like a sail from a ship. When Veranzio was 65years old, he fell ill. Thinking he would not live longer, he decided to try out his parachute invention. He built his parachute using wood and cloth. Straping his invention to his waist, he jumped off the tall bell tower in his city. He landed safely! He was supposedly the first man to successfully use a parachute. However, some other people thought this story wasnot true. If that was the case, then the first person to successfully use a parachute would go to a Frenchman named Louis-Sebastien Lenormand in 1783.16.The first known parachute was designed by .A. FrenchmanB. ItalianC. CroatiansD. Englishmen17. Leonardo da Vinci 's parachute was shaped like a .A. coneB. featherC. pyramidD. sail18.Which of the following is about Fausto Veranzio is true?A.He copied da Vinci 's parachute design.B.He made his parachute with feather and wood.C.He experimented with his parachute many times.D. He decided to try his parachute after he was seriously ill.19.As for the first man who successfully used a parachute,A.it was said to be Leonardo da VinciB.we know for sure he was VeranzioC.there were some historical recordsD.we don't know for sure yet20.The passage is mainly about _ .A.the origin of the parachuteB.The dreams of flying and fallingC.the courage of dropping from the skyD. the application of parachute inventionPassage TwoOut of all the students who enroll in a massive open online course(MOOC), only about 5 percent complete the course and receive a certificate accomplishment. This statistic is often cited as evidence that MOOCs are fatally flawed(缺陷的)and offer little educational value to most students. Yet more than 80 percent of students who fill out a post-course survey say they met their primary objective. How do we look at these two facts? We' re used to focusing on completion rates in higher education, but they e not the only-or 'r even the most meaningful – indicator of engagement in open online courses. With no cost to enroll, no punishment for dropping out, and little reward for actually earning a certificate, MOOCs are fundamentally different from traditional calssess – and students use them in fundamentally different ways.Data from more than 1.8 million students erolled in 36 MOOCs offered by the University of Pennsylvania show that students treat MOOCs like a buffet (自助餐), sampling the material according to their interests and career goals. Some are curious about the subject matter and just watch one or two video lectures; others use the discussion forums to connect with their intellectual peers around the world. Of all enrolled students, nearly 60 percent watch at least one vedio, complete at least one assignment, or post at least once in a forum. So focusing on the tiny fraction of students who complete a MOCCs is misguided. The more important number is the 60 percent engagement rate. Students may not finish a MOOC with a certificate of accomplishment, but the courses nonetheless meet the educational goals of millions.21.What do we learn about MOOCs from Para.1?A.There seems to be conflicting statistics about MOOCs.B.It turns out that MOOCs have faile d people ' s expectations.C.Most students find it hard to judge the value of MOOcs.D.The educational value of MOOCs is well acknowledged.22.In Para.2, the author stresses .A.the primary objective of MOOC studentsB.the significance of competion rates in educationC.the strengths and weakness of open online coursesD. the differences between MOOCc and trditional classes23.According to Para. 3, students choose MOOCs for the following reasons EXCEPT .A. earning a certificateB.improving job-related skillsC.meeting their interest in the subjectsD.exchanging ideas with students worldwide24.The sentence “ students treat MOOCs as a buffet ” (Para.3) ____ .A. emphasizes the core value of MOCCsB.demonstrates the daily operation of MOOCdC.indicates students are free to choose MOOC resourcesD. explains what students learn from MOOC courses25.What is the author ' s attitude toward MOOCs?A. Critical.B. Supportive.C. Indifferent.D. Neutral.Passage ThreeWhether you are hiking through 徒步the magnificent redwoods of Northern California, sleeping under the brilliant stars of the Texas sky or watching the sun rise across the rocky cliffs of Maine, expecting the outdoor world can be inspiring, thrilling, and deeply satisfying. And one of the best ways to enjoy the abundant gifts of the natural world is simple, inexpensive, and available to almost every one. Let ' s go camping. When you camp, you create a “ home away from home ” in the fresh air. Yneoue dd oanlot 'tof fency equipment to enjoy camping. What you need is simply a tent large enough for your family. Practice setting up the tent at home to make sure you are familiar with the process before you go camping.Once you find a good site, it 'tims e to set up tent. Your first job is to set up your tent. Remove all sticks and rocks from the area. Spread a tarp ( 防水帆布) over the area where your tent will sit. Set up the tent and be sure to stake it down firmly, even if the weather is mild. Otherwise, strong wind can blow your tent away.Next, you ' lnl eed some firewood for a campfire. If gathering wood is illegal at your campground, you must buy it at the camp store. If gathering dead wood is permitted, go on a firewood-hunting journey and bring in a good supply of wood for your campsite, pile the wood safely away from the campfire ring and where no one will trip over the wood or hurt his or her legs on sharp branches.Being a responsible camper requires that you follow the rules of the campground. Do not burn food or plastic in your campfire. Make sure that you leave your campsite in good condition for the next campers. Just before leaving the site, make a final check to be certain that your campfire is completely out. Pour water on the ashes just to be safe!26.As is suggested by the aurhor, you should practice setting up your tent .A. before the weather turns badB.before your first camping upC.after having selected your campsiteD.once you have decided where to go27.What is the first thing you should do after choosing a campsite?A. People who threaten to harm a country always plot in secret, so the intelligence agencies have to work in secret to find out what is being planned before it happens, so that it can be prevented. They do that in many different ways –by secretlylistening to their targets talking on the phone, by planting microphongs to overhear meetings, by watching the targets as they move from place to place and by recruiting some of the targets to act as double agents to report on what is going on.For most of my career I worked in one of the UK' st hree intelligence services, MIS, the domestic security service. I first joined in the 1970s, in the middle of the Gold War, when the war was divided into two armed camps, the Soviet Union(前苏联) and its allies on the one side and Western Europe, America and their allies on the other. The Gold War never became a fighting war. It was an intelligence war, with intelligence officers from both sides trying to find out what the other side was doing, what kind of weapons they had, when and if they might start a war and what their plans were. Both sides were secretly working in each other ' s countries.Nowadays one of the biggest threats to the world, comes from terrorists. Intelligence officers from many differenct countries are working together to find out who they are., where they are and what they are planning. Today ' s MIS officers get their intelligencuec ihn tmhe same way as wedid during the Gold War, but their task is even more difficult and urgent because mostterrorists want to kill people. Many terrorist attacks that are planned and prepared never happen, and we never know anything about them because the intelligence services find them out and prevent them.第6 页共11 页31.What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.
