2019版高考英语一轮复习第一部分教材重点Unit3Inventorsandinventions
Unit 3 Inventors and inventionsⅠ.阅读理解AEarly one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run around the needle without any problems.Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practical sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious (无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to us”.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 3 Inventors and inventions李仕才一、阅读理解A new “smart bin” could mean the end of environment-conscious families spending hours sorting tins, cartons, bottles, and cardboard for recycling. The invention, which can help sort rubbish into recycling categories without needing people to operate. It is being trialed in Poland and is set to go on sale in UK within a few years. The bin, designed by start-up company Bin.E, recognizes different type of waste via a system positioned inside the bin which uses sensors, image recognition and artificial intelligence. Once waste is placed inside, the camera and sensor identify its type and place it in one of the smaller bins. Then it compresses the waste so it occupies less space. It is thought that the bin could be stocked by department stores such as John Lewis, which said it is introducing more new hi-tech recycling bins. Matt Thomas, a buyer at John Lewis, gave us the reason, “We’ve recently seen a jump in specialist bins sales, with a 25 percent increase in the last few months alone. We have noticed our customers are becoming more and more focused on sustainability. In response to this demand, we are really excited to introduce a smart bin this autumn/winterseason-designed to make recycling more efficient and functional for the everyday home."Bin. E’s official release on the market will take place in 2018. However, at first only a larger version designed for offices will be available. The office bin will sell at £ 430 while customers will need to pay a £ 107 subscript ion fee for an accompanying smartphone app, which hooks them up with collection services. A spokesman at Bin. E said that home version of the bin will be cheaper and will not include a monthly payment. They added: “After the office version, we plan to crea te an outdoor version and later the home version. We decided to go for the outdoor version for public areas first because it is more difficult to organize an efficient waste segregating system than in our homes.”1.What do we know about about a new “smart bin” from the first paragraph?A. It works automatically.B. It has been used widely.C. It is easy to operate.D. It is very expensive.2.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. The waste.B. The camera.C. (2018·合肥高三调研性检测)In our everyday lives we meet situations in which we take many things for granted. We only treasure things when they are gone. This is a sad truth of human nature. One day, I found myself as a witness to a similar situation. One evening, I left work and boarded the train. After entering, I noticed something unusual. The center of the car had a few empty seats while both ends were crowde d with people standing. I didn’t pay much attention and sat do wn on one of the empty seats. I sensed a funny smell. It wasn’t long before I noticed a homeless person sleeping on three seats in front of me. He was bleeding from his nose. Why wasn’t anyone helping him?His clothes were torn and he was giving off a strange smell. Along with the smell, his eyes were dull, watery, and red. Occasionally he scratched himself and people looked at him as if he had committed a crime. As the train stopped at stations and more people came in they covered their noses and faced away from him. All the seats around him were empty.Suddenly, he began to swear at the people around him. A plainclothes police officer who looked like a construction worker took out his certificate and showed it to the homeless man. The officer, not wanting to touch the homeless man, told him his rights and directed him to exit the train. As the officer walked the man out of the train, the homeless man turned around and said “MY HOME!” and started crying.A man doesn’t value things until they are gone. If he didn’t have a home, at least he had freedom. Now he has neither. No one wants to help someone who won’t help himself.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

2019高考英语一轮选训习题Unit3Inventorsandinventions(含解析)新人教版
选修8 Unit 3 Inventors and inventions李仕才Ⅰ.阅读理解Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only ” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a computer, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those“if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be there. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality(可能发生的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule ?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.2.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to __________.A. keep her appointment with the eye doctorB. meet her father who was already an old manC. join in the holiday celebration of the companyD. finish her work before the deadline approaching3.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closed in meaning to “_________”.A. abandonedB. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted4.What is the best title for the passage ?A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest WordsC. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of Mind【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲解的是作者对于最悲哀的两个单词if only 的理解及看法。

Taylore is a kid who passes by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.Last summer four of us rode down the trail behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny. We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飞驰). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on.Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right.I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch up with the girls. It was like a truck winding over a mountain road without brakes (闸). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t.In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed th at the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tried enough to want to slow down.I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and comfortable, no t even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowed. She gave me a high five. "Wow, you did well, "she said. "I knew you’d go fast when you were ready."No one in the group had even broken a sweat, except me. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not from exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皱纹), glasses and gray hair, I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels.1. Angry men appear to gain influence in a group, but angry women loseinfluence, according to a new study.Researchers from Arizona StateUniversity(ASU)published their findings in the journal Law and HumanBehavior.Jessica Salerno is a psychologist and was coauthor of the study. The findings suggest that“women might not have the same opportunity for influence when they express anger”.The study found that when men expressed their opinion with anger, participants rated them as more believable. But when women expressed anger, they were viewed as more emotional and, thus, less convincing. In other words,a man could benefit from using anger in power and persuasion.A woman, however, could be ignored or hurt by her group if she expressed anger. The study was based on the responses of 210 students. They were shown evidence and photographs online from a real murder trial.A man was said to have murdered his wife. The students were asked to decide if the man was guilty or not. Before making their decision, the students discussed the case online with five jurors(陪审员).But these were not real jurors:They were computers making responses and comments back to the students. Some of the fake jurors had male identities. Others had female identities. Some male jurors were angry about the judgment. When this happened, the students reacted by doubting their own decisions about the case.Confidence in their response s on the judgment “dropped obviously,”said the study. But,when female jurors seemed angry, the student participants“became obviously more confident in their original judgments,”the study found. The study could have wider importance.“Our results have impl ications(启示)for any woman who is trying to have influence on a decision in their workplace and everyday lives,”said Salerno. She added that in a political debate,a female candidate might have less influence if she shows anger.1.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Powerful Men Must Be Those Who Often Get AngryB.Women,be Careful Not to Turn Angry EasilyC.Angry Men Win Influence While Angry Women LoseD.Angry Women Are Not Unfit for Leaders While Men Are2.The underlined word“rated”in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by“________.”A.forgaveB.ignoredC.regardedD.praised3.How did the students react to the female jurors' anger with their judgments?A.They more firmly stuck to their judgments.B.They began to doubt about their judgments.C.They gave up their judgments willingly.D.They had to change their judgments.4.If a woman politician wants to have more influence, she'd better________.A.always keep smilingB.avoid losing her temperC.become angryD.give orders firmly参考答案:1.C; 2.C; 3.A; 4.B解析:1.[主旨大意题。

If a city wants to hold the Olympics,it must submit a proposal to the IOC.After all proposals have been submitted, the IOC votes. If no city with the fewest votes is eliminated(淘汰),the voting continues, until a majority winner is determined.Typically, the Games are awarded several years in advance, allowing the winning city time to prepare for the Games. In selecting the site of the Olympic Games, the IOC considers a number of factors, and chiefly among them is which organizing committee seems most likely to stage the Games effectively. The IOC also considers which parts of the world have not yet hosted the Games. For instance,Tokyo, the host of the 1964 Summer Games, and Beijing, that of the 2008 Games, were chosen in part to popularize the Olympic movement in Asia.Because of the growing importance of television worldwide, the IOC in recent years has also taken into account the host city's time zone.Whenever the Games take place in the USA or Canada, for example,American television networks are willing to pay specially higher amounts for television rights because they can broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hours.Once the Games have been awarded,it is the duty of the local organizing committee—not the IOC or the NOC of the host city's country to provide them with money. This is often done with a part of the Olympic television revenues(收入),and corporate sponsorships, tickets sales, and other smaller revenue sources. In many cases there is also direct government support.Although many cities have gained amounts of money by hosting the Games, the Olympics can be financially risky. If the financial gains from the Games are less than expected, the city will be left with large debts.1.________ will be determined to host the Olympic Games by the IOC.A.A city that submits a proposalB.A majority winner in votingC.A city that has perfect time zoneD.One that hasn't hosted the Games2.If the Games take place in Canada,American television networks ________.A.will not pay for the Canadian television networksB.will be forbidden to broadcast live sporting eventsC.can't broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hoursD.are willing to pay much higher amounts for television rights3.According to the last paragraph, which following statement is true?A.The host city must be left with large debts.B.There is no financial risk in hosting the Olympic Games.C.The city may gain a lot of money.D.It is impossible that the host city couldn't make money.4.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?A.Winner or loserB.Applying for host for the OlympicsC.How to host the Olympic GamesD.The Olympic Games【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了申办奥运会的流程。

Almost no one can resist a good mystery novel or detective novel, so these novels sell thousands of copies each year. And many readers regard famous mystery author Agatha Christie as Queen of Crime, whose stories are known for their tense atmosphere and strong psychological suspense and have a great effect on the English mystery novels.Christie was born in September 1890 in England. When she was growing up, her mother often told her stories. Christie loved these stories, which took her into a world of fantasy. Christie’s mother also encouraged her to write from a young age and also took her to travel a lot.She married Archie Christie in 1914 at the beginning of World War Ⅰ. During the war, Christie wrote her first detective story: The Mysterious Affair at Styles. She chose the crime, and then invented a detective named Hercule Poirot, ranking second to Sherlock Holmes, to solve it. She sent the book to a publisher, but it was rejected. After the war ended, Christie sent her book to more publishers, and finally, in 1920, one published it. She earned just $25 for it. Over the next few years, Christie wrote more books and short stories, gaining experience as a writer. In spite of her literary success, life was not going well at home. In 1928, Archie and Agatha got a divorce(离婚). A short time later, she met a young archaeologist, Max Mallowan. After getting married in 1930, they began to spend some time each year in the Middle East, which provided settings for some of Christie’s novels, such as Murder at the Vicarage(1930), Murder on the Orient Express (1934)and Death on the Nile(1939).Christie continued writing for the rest of her life. When she died in January 1976, readers around the world mourned(哀悼)her death. But her tales of mystery continue to be loved by new generations of readers. introduced a new self-driving electric vehicle called “Olli” in National Harbour,Maryland. The car—really,a small bus—is capable of transporting 12 people at once.It uses IBM’s “Watson” system, pulling vast amounts of data on its surroundings from a variety of sources. For example,if you use the car enough it could eventually figure out your general path to work every morning. If you’re running late on e day —or Watson uses weather data to figure out that it’s about to rain,or that traffic will get worse—Olli might tell you there’s no time for coffee.Ask it when you’ll arrive at your destination and it can answer. The vehicle will be available to the pub lic in National Harbor at “select times” this ter this year,it will be used in Florida’s Miami-Dade County and Las Vegas.Much has been said about Google’s driverless car prototype(模型)—but Jay Rogers,CEO of Local Motors,a small experimental car ma ker, says there’s a problem with the Google’s business model.“Google doesn’t make cars,”he explained. While that’s not strictly true—the company does have its own self-driving car prototype—Google is working with traditional automakers like Fiat Chrysler to get its vehicles on public roads. But driverless cars aren’t legal in every state.“A company like Fiat Chrysler won’t put out vehicles they can’t sell everywhere,”Rogers said.Rogers believes Local Motors is nimble enough to be an industry leader. The company designed Olli in 2015 and officially approved the project in March,2016.Three months later, with IBM,they have a working vehicle in Maryland. We’re a long way away from having Olli everywhere,of course, but Rogers says Local Motors’ major problem is legislation, not technology. They’re already equipped to produce and deliver the cars wherever there’s demand—though it’s a small company,so don’t expect too many of them.1.What’s Olli’s major feature?A.It is an electric vehicle.B.It doesn’t need a driver.C.It can take 12 people at once.D.It can communicate with their pets. She wondered:“What if you could talk to your dog if you were gone?”Working with her father in their garage, the 16-year-old came up with several ideas. Finally, she invented a device that allowed pet owners to video chat with their pets! She calls the device iCPooch.“The dog doesn’t have to answer the call,”explains Brooke.“It comes up immediately on the screen on its end. It’s atwo-way audio and video—you can see and hear e ach other.”With a click of a button you can even send the dog a treat! Her invention has earned her a spot competing against nine other finalists in a young scientist competition for middle-school students. These finalists, selected based on their short video presentations, are working with mentors over the summer before heading to the final competition in St.Paul,Minn.After Martin’s video put her among the 10 finalists in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, she was paired with Delony Langer-Anderson,a product develop ment scientist in 3M’s consumer health care division.“I just lead her down the product development path,”Langer-Anderson told LiveScience. This path includes guidance on how to test the potential product, which combines a video chat device that answers immediately on the dog’s end with a dog treat device the owner can remotely activate.“One thing I have thought about a lot is,what happens if while the device is on the floor, what if your dog knocks it over,or scratches the screen?”M artin said. She and Langer-Anderson discussed this, and Martin is now testing materials at a local dog shelter by taping them to the Unit 3 Inventors and inventions Ⅰ.阅读理解(2017重庆育才中学高三入学考试)A machine that takes sweat-laden (浸满汗水的) clothes and turns the sweat into drinking water is in use in Sweden. The machine makes the clothes turn round quickly, heats them to remove the sweat, and then passes the steam through a kind of special material to make purified water.Since it has been brought into use, its creators say more than 1000 people have drunk others’ “sweat” in Gothenburg. They add the liquid is cleaner than local tap water.Th e device was built for the United Nations’ child-focused charity UNICEF to promote a campaign highlighting the fact that 780 million people in the world lack access to clean water. The machine was designed and built by the engineer Andreas Hammar, known locally for his appearances on TV tech show “Mekatronik”. He said the key part of the sweat machine was a new water purification part developed by a company named HVR.“It uses a technique called membrane distillation (膜蒸馏),” he told the BBC.“We use a special kind of material that only lets steam through but keeps bacteria, salts, clothing fibers and other things out. They have something similar to the International Space Station, but our machine is cheaper to build. The amount of water it produces depends on how sweaty the person is, but one person’s T-shirt typically produces 10ml, about a mouthful.”The device has been put on show at the Gothia Cup—the world’s largest international youth football tournament. Mattias Ronge, chief executive of Stockholm-based advertising agencyDeportivo, said the machine had helped raise awareness of UNICEF, but in reality had its limitations.“People haven’t produced as much sweat as we hoped—right now the weather in Gothenburg is lousy,” Mattias Ronge said. “So we’ve equipp ed the machine with exercise bikes and volunteers are cycling like crazy. Even so, the demand for sweat is greater than the supply. And the machine will never be produced in large numbers, since there are better solutions out there such as water purifying pills.”1.Which of the following is the disadvantage of the sweat machine?A.It takes too long for the machine to produce water.B.The amount of water the machine produces is rather limited.C.It costs a large amount of money to build the machine.D.The water processed by the machine is not clean enough.2.UNICEF is mentioned in the text to .A.show how the sweat machine worksB.explain why the sweat machine was inventedC.show the importance of the United NationsD.tell us who invented the sweat machine3.What did Mattias Ronge think of the sweat machine?A.It could only be used in summer.B.It did not work at all.C.It was not worth popularizing.D.The water it produced tasted sweet.4.The text is written mainly to tell us that .A.a machine which turns sweat into drinking water is inventedB.780 million people in the world lack access to clean waterC.a better solution to purifying dirty water is discoveredD.the pill which turns dirty water into clean water is producedⅡ.七选五(2018山东寿光现代中学高三开学考试)Ways to Worry LessDo you want to worry less? Of course you do. That’s like asking if I can send you free bacon. Worry is like black mold—it appears in damp conditions and spreads uncontrollably. And very often we don’t realize it’s there until it’s killing us. We must get rid of worry before it destroys us. But how should we do it? 1Do what you need to do.2 You ought not to avoid tough projects or hard conversions. If you don’t do what you should be doing, you will end up spending the rest of the time worrying about the must-do things. Believe it or not, the anxiety that comes from the worry is much worse than the task we’re worried about.3I think many of us act like we’re puppets(木偶)in a play and we’re waiting for something or someone to put us in the right place.
