In just two weeks, we’ll come together, as a nation, to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. We’ll remember the innocent lives we lost. We’ll stand with the families who loved them. We’ll honor the heroic first responders who rushed to the scene and saved so many. And we’ll pay tribute to our troops and military families, and all those who have served over the past ten years, to keep us safe and strong. We’ll also recall how the worst terrorist attack in American history brought out the best in the American people. How Americans lined up to give blood. How volunteers drove across the country to lend a hand. How schoolchildren donated their savings. How communities, faith groups and businesses collected food and clothing. We were united, and the outpouring(流露)of generosity and compassion reminded us that in times of challenge, we Americans move forward together, as one people. This September 11th, Michelle and I will join the commemorations at Ground Zero, in Shanksville, and at the Pentagon. But even if you can’t be in New York, Pennsylvania or Virginia, every American can be part of this anniversary. Once again, 9/11 will be a National Day of Service and Remembrance. And in the days and weeks ahead, folks across the country—in all 50 states—will come together, in their communities and neighborhoods, to honor the victims of 9/11 and to reaffirm the strength of our nation with acts of service and charity. In Minneapolis, volunteers will help restore a community center. In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, they’ll hammer shingles and lay floors to give families a new home. In T allahassee, Florida, they’ll assemble care packages for our troops overseas and their families here at home. In Orange County, California, they’ll renovate homes for our veterans. And once again, Michelle and I look forward to joining a local service project as well. There are so many ways to get involved, and every American can do something. To learn more about the opportunities where you live, just go online and visit . Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost; a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11.On this 10th anniversary, we still face great challenges as a nation. We’re emerging from the worst economic crisis in our lifetimes. We’re taking the fight to al Qaeda, ending the war in Iraq and starting to bring our troops home from Afghanistan. And we’re working to rebuild the foundation of our national strength here at home.None of this will be easy. And it can’t be the work of government alone. As we saw after 9/11, the strength of America has always been the character and compassion of our people. So as we mark this solemn anniversary, let’s summon that spirit once more. And let’s show that the sense of common purpose that we need in America doesn’t have to be a fleeting(飞逝的)moment; it can be a lasting virtue—not just on one day, but every day.。

Good morning. This is a day of remembrance for our country. And I am honored to be joined at the White House today by Americans who lost so much in the terrible events of September the 11th, 2001, and have felt that loss every day since.Three years ago, the struggle of good against evil was compressed into a single morning. In the space of only 102 minutes, our country lost more citizens than were lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Time has passed, but the memories do not fade. We remember the images of fire, and the final calls of love, and the courage of rescuers who saw death and did not flee.We remember the cruelty of enemies who murdered the innocent, and rejoiced in our suffering. We remember the many good lives that ended too soon -- which no one had the right to take. And our nation remembers the families left behind to carry a burden of sorrow. They have shown courage of their own. And with the help of God's grace, and with support from one another, the families of terror victims have shown a strength that survives all hurt. Each of them remains in the thoughts and prayers of the American people. The terrorist attacks on September the 11th were a turning point for our nation. We saw the goals of a determined enemy: to expand the scale of their murder, and force America to retreat from the world. And our nation accepted a mission: We will defeat this enemy. The United States of America is determined to guard our homeland against future attacks. As the September the 11th Commission concluded, our country is safer than we were three years ago, but we are not yet safe.So every day, many thousands of dedicated men and women are on duty -- as air marshals, airport screeners, cargo inspectors, border patrol officers, and first responders. At the same time, Americans serving in the FBI and CIA are performing their daily work with professionalism, while we reform those agencies to see the dangers around the next corner. Our country is grateful to all our fellow citizens who watch for the enemy, and answer the alarms, and guard America by their vigilance. The United States is determined to stay on the offensive, and to pursue the terrorists wherever they train, or sleep, or attempt to set down roots. We have conducted this campaign from the mountainsof Afghanistan, to the heart of the Middle East, to the horn of Africa, to the islands of the Philippines, to hidden cells within our own country.More than three-quarters of al Qaeda's key members and associates have been detained or killed. We know that there is still a danger to America. So we will not relent until the terrorists who plot murder against our people are found and dealt with. The United States is also determined to advance democracy in the broader Middle East, because freedom will bring the peace and security we all want. When the peoples of that region are given new hope and lives of dignity, they will let go of old hatreds and resentments, and the terrorists will find fewer recruits. And as governments of that region join in the fight against terror instead of harboring terrorists, America and the world will be more secure. Our present work in Iraq and Afghanistan is difficult. It is also historic and essential. By our commitment and sacrifice today, we will help transform the Middle East, and increase the safety of our children and grandchildren.Since September the 11th, the sacrifices in the war on terror have fallen most heavily on members of our military, and their families. Our nation is grateful to the brave men and women who are taking risks on our behalf at this hour. And America will never forget the ones who have fallen -- men and women last seen doing their duty, whose names we will honor forever. The war on terror goes on. The resolve of our nation is still being tested. And in the face of danger we are showing our character. Three years after the attack on our country, Americans remain strong and resolute, patient in a just cause, and confident of the victory to come.Thank you for listenin早上好。

THE PRESIDENT: The Bible tells us -- “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”Ten years ago, America confronted one of our darkestnights. Mighty towers crumbled. Black smoke billowed up from the Pentagon. Airplane wreckage smoldered on a Pennsylvania field. Friends and neighbors, sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters –- they were taken from us with a heartbreaking swiftness and cruelty. And on September 12, 2001, we awoke to a world in which evil was closer at hand, and uncertainty clouded our future. In the decade since, much has changed for Americans. We’ve known war and recession, passionate debates and political divides. We can never get back the lives that were lost on that day or the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed. And yet today, it is worth remembering what has not changed. Our character as a nation has not changed. Our faith -– in God and in each other –- that has not changed. Our belief in America, born of a timeless ideal that men and women should govern themselves; thatall people are created equal, and deserve the same freedom to determine their own destiny –- that belief, through tests and trials, has only been strengthened. These past 10 years have shown that America does not give in to fear. The rescue workers who rushed to the scene, the firefighters who charged up the stairs, the passengers who stormed the cockpit -- these patriots defined the very nature of courage. Over the years we’ve a lso seen a more quiet form of heroism -- in the ladder company that lost so many men and still suits up and saves lives every day, the businesses that have been rebuilt from nothing, the burn victim who has bounced back, the families who press on.Last spring, I received a letter from a woman named Suzanne Swaine. She had lost her husband and brother in the Twin Towers, and said that she had been robbed of, “so many would-be proud moments where a father watches their child graduate, or tend a goal in a lac rosse game, or succeed academically.”But her daughters are in college, the other doing well in high school. “It has been 10 years of raising these girls on my own,” Suzanne wrote.“I could not be prouder of their strength and resilience.”That spirit typifies our American family. And the hopeful future for those girls is the ultimate rebuke to the hateful killers who took the life of their father. These past 10 years have shown America’s resolve to defend its citizens, and our way of life. Diplomats serve in far off posts, and intelligence professionals work tirelessly without recognition. Two million Americans have gone to war since 9/11. They have demonstrated that those who do us harm cannot hide from the reach of justice, anywhere in the world. America has been defended not by conscripts, but by citizens who choose to serve -– young people who signed up straight out of high school, guardsmen and reservists, workers and business-people, immigrants and fourth-generation soldiers. They are men and women who left behind lives of comfort for two, three, four, five tours of duty. Too many will never come home. Those that do carry dark memories from distant places and the legacy of fallen friends. The sacrifices of these men and women, and of our military families, reminds us that the wages of war are great; that while service to our nation is full of glory, war itself is never glorious. Our troops have been to lands unknown to many Americans a decade ago -– to Kandahar and Kabul; to Mosul and Basra. But our strength is not measured in our ability to stay in these places; it comes from our commitment to leave those lands to free people and sovereign states, and our desire to move from a decade of war to a future of peace. These 10 years have shown that we hold fast to our freedoms. Yes, we’re more vigilant against those who threaten us, and there are inconveniences that come with our common defense. Debates –- about war and peace, about security and civil liberties –- have often been fierce these last 10 years. But it is precisely the rigor of these debates, and our ability to resolve them in a way that honors our values and our democracy, that is the measure of ourstrength. Meanwhile, our open markets still provide innovators the chance to create and succeed, our citizens are still free to speak their minds, and our souls are enriched in churches and temples, our synagogues and our mosques. These past 10 years underscores the bonds between all Americans. We have not succumbed to suspicion, nor have we succumbed to mistrust. After 9/11, to his great credit, President Bush made clear what we reaffirm today: The United States will never wage war against Islam or any other religion. Immigrants come here from all parts of the globe. And in the biggest cities and the smallest towns, in schools and workplaces, you still see people of every conceivable race and religion and ethnicity -– all of thempledging allegiance to the flag, all of them reaching for the same American dream –- e pluribus unum, out of many, we are one. These past 10 years tell a story of our resilience. The Pentagon is repaired, and filled with patriots working in commonpurpose. Shanksville is the scene of friendships forged between residents of that town, and families who lost loved ones there. New York -- New York remains the most vibrant of capitals of arts and industry and fashion and commerce. Where the World Trade Center once stood, the sun glistens off a new tower that reaches towards the sky.Our people still work in skyscrapers. Our stadiums are still filled with fans, and our parks full of children playing ball. Our airports hum with travel, and our buses and subways take millions where they need to go. And families sit down to Sunday dinner, and students prepare for school. This land pulses with the optimism of those who set out for distant shores, and the courage of those who died for human freedom.Decades from now, Americans will visit the memorials to those who were lost on 9/11. They’ll run thei r fingers over the places where thenames of those we loved are carved into marble and stone, and they may wonder at the lives that they led. And standing before the white headstones in Arlington, and in peaceful cemeteries and small-town squares in every corner of the country, they will pay respects to those lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. They’ll see the names of the fallen on bridges and statues, at gardens and schools. And they will know that nothing can break the will of a truly United States of America. They will remember that we’ve overcome slavery and Civil War; we’ve overcome bread lines and fascism and recession and riots, and communism and, yes, terrorism. They will be reminded that we are not perfect, but our democracy is durable, and that democracy –- reflecting, as it does, the imperfections of man -– also give us the opportunity to perfect our union. That is what we honor on days of national commemoration –- those aspects of the American experience that are enduring, and the determination to move forward as one people.More than monuments, that will be the legacy of 9/11 –- a legacy of firefighters who walked into fire and soldiers who signed up to serve; of workers who raised new towers, and citizens who faced down their private fears. Most of all, of children who realized the dreams oftheir parents. It will be said that we kept the faith; that we took a painful blow, and we emerged stronger than before.“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”With a just God as our guide, let us honor those who have been lost, let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals that define our nation, and let us look to the future with hearts full of hope.May God bless the memory of those we lost, and may God bless the United States of America.。

My son Joe started dating a young lady whose father worked in a police station. Joe was interested in working there. And he came home one day and he said, “I’m taking the police test.” When he graduated, they assigned(分配) him to East New York where I started my career. (1) However, Joe’s brother, John wanted nothing to do with police or firefighters. He wanted to be the “ next Donald Trump”, a millionaire(富翁)well-known in America. But in 1984, I came down with throat cancer. He noticed how the guys I worked with in the fire department(消防队)took care of us. He decided to be a firefighter. Both the boys would call us when they were working. John would always call around four o’clock, and that particular(特别的)night, September 10, we spoke for a few minutes. And I said, “I love you.” Joe called me in the morning and told me to turn on the television, that a plane just hit the Trade Center(世贸大厦)。

Guess Who
If there’s one film from the 1960s that would not seem necessary to remake, it’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, the 1967 Oscar-winner in which Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play a couple whose liberal ideals are tested by their daughter’s decision to marry a black doctor (Sidney Poitier). Dinner was made in an era in which mixed-race marriages were uncommon and even illegal in some states (the Supreme Court overturned1 anti-miscegenation2 laws that prevented such unions around the same time the movie opened).
That puts director Kevin Rodney Sullivan’s Guess Who on thin ice3 at the start. While contemporary parents might still have misgivings4or concerns about their daughter dating outside her race, that choice probably wouldn’t spark the same kind of handwringing5, tearful anguish it did in 1967.
But before we all congratulate ourselves on having come so fa r on the road to racial equality, Guess Who holds up a bright yellow “yield” sign, reminding us that there are still some sizable potholes6 we have to maneuver around.
In its first half, as Theresa Jones (Zoe Saldana) and her fiance, Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher), travel to spend the weekend with her father Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) and her mother Marilyn (Judith Scott), Simon learns that Theresa has told Percy and Marilyn all “the important things” about him, but neglected to mention that he is white. Almos t immediately after they’re introduced, Percy disapproves of Simon and gives him grief about everything he does and says, while Theresa and Marilyn attempt to smooth things over.
There is one crucial area in which Guess Who improves on Dinner, and that’s in its portrait of Theresa, who claims to want total honesty but doesn’t always tell the whole truth herself. In Dinner, Katharine Houghton played this part as a self-righteous brat7; it was a challenge to believe that someone as intelligent and thoughtf ul as Poitier’s character could be attracted to her. But Saldana finds both the independent-minded adult and the uncertain young woman that coexist in Theresa’s heart, creating someone much more well-rounded and credible.
The screenplay warms up the audience with silly situations: Simon and Percy keep finding disturbing songs like Brother Louie, Walk on the Wild Side and the
ever-ghastly Ebony and Ivory on the radio; the men face off on a go-kart8 track; Percy insists on sleeping in the basement with Simon to prevent any late-night hanky-panky9, etc. While there are a few laughs to be had at the escalating tensions between hot-headed Percy and eager-to-please Simon, the filmmakers are basically pitching softballs.
But during the course of a family dinner, Guess Who finally gets gutsy10 as Simon is coerced11into telling some of the “black jokes” he claims to find “simple-minded, crude and unfunny.” The non-PC jokes, and the reactions they inspire, push the envelope of what’s considered socially acceptable, creating a scene that’s both uproarious12 and uncomfortable at the same time.
From this point on, director Sullivan pushes his cast to move beyond easy laughs and find the not-so-funny truths and perceptions that often keep people from different backgroun ds at arm’s length.。
