But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转)the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, ―STOP, TAKE US BACK!‖ When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. To many property developers and local government officials, housing price in China is still low compared with many developed countries. However, the average housing price in the United States is only 8,000 yuan per square meter, while in China, it is even higher than in the United States. This shows that there are some bubbles(泡沫) in Chinese real estate market, the International Finance News reported.Although the average price of residential houses in the United States, after converted to Renminbi, is about 8,000 yuan per square meter, the houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses. If US property developers sell their houses according to the building area, then the housing price will be even lower than 8,000 yuan per square meter. In most big Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, houses are sold at a price even higher than those in the US.The high housing sales price in large cities in China proves that Chinese real estate market does have some bubbles. Moreover, Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities. Furthermore, it should be noted that American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people. How can the Chinese afford to buy a house which is even more expensive than that sold in US?At the beginning of 2007, Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public. Now in order to reduce the high housing prices, the government can regulate the real estate market by raising tax on property industry and controlling the release of loans and lands to property developers. At the same time, the government should allow people to build more houses through various fund-raising channels, such as funds collected from buyers or raised by working units. By applying these multiple means, it is expected that the high housing prices can be lowered.72.According to the passage, what is the average housing price per square meter in China?A.8000 yuan B.10000 yuan C.7000 yuan D.It’s not mentioned here73.Which of the following does NOT support the idea that the average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States?A.Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities.B.American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people.C.The houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses.D.There are more people who need houses in China.74.What is the main idea of this passage?A.The housing price in China is so high that the government should do something useful to prevent it.B.There are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market.C.The average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States.D.Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public.2009届上海市高三年级第二次十四校联考英语试题- 6 - 75.How many measures are mentioned in the last paragraph in order to reduce the high housing prices?A.Four B.Three C.Five D.TwoDSome futurologists have assumed that the vast increase of women in the workforce may portend(预示)a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The opposite of this concern is that the prospects of becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to put off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy comes to life, the number of marriages also rises. The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible(似是而非的). Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of women’s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.76.It is said in the passage that when the economy slides_____.A.men would choose working women as their marriage partnersB.more women would get married to seek financial securityC.even working women would worry about their marriagesD.more people would prefer to remain single for the time being77.If women find fulfillment through work outside the home,_____.A.they are more likely to dominate their marriage partnersB.their husbands are expected to do more houseworkC.their marriage ties can be strengthenedD.they tend to put their career before marriage78.One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that_____.A.they feel that they have been robbed of their freedomB.they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbandsC.they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectationsD.they tend to suspect their husbands? loyalty to their marriage79.Which of the following statements can best summarize the authors view in the passage?A.The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.B.Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage.C.In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent.D.The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case.Section C(5分)2009届上海市高三年级第二次十四校联考英语试题- 7 - Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading form A-F for each paragraph. There is80.You should always seek grant(奖学金)opportunities that match your program’s goals and objectives rather than the other way around. If you change your program based on an investor’s guidelines, you may end up with a project or program that is mere shell(框架)of the original plan. The goal of grant writing is not simply to bring more money in for your agency; the goal is to fund programs that will meet the needs of your investor.81.Most funding agencies publish grant guidelines or requirements. Make sure you understand them and follow them exactly. Note the deadline and whether the proposal must be received by the deadline. Don’t have your proposal thrown out because you didn’t follow the guidelines properly. Exceptions are rarely made, regardless of the circumstances. Some investors have special requirements; follow them!82.Your ―needs statement‖ drives your entire grant proposal. The proposed program should revolve around the problems faced by your clients. The purpose of the grant is to meet the specific needs you have identified. If you have not adequately described the reason you need the program, including the research data when possible, the investor will see no reason to invest in your project.83.Every proposal will require a section that describes the broad goals and measurable objectives of your project. You should detail the activities of your project Your budget and budget narrative must closely match the described activities. Your evaluation should carefully measure whether the stated project objectives are being met on a timely basis. Foundation and corporate investors generally expect this section to be no longer than 5 to 10 pages. Federal grants may allow up to 50 pages or more for a thorough discussion of your project. Again, follow the guidelines of the investor.84.If you are fortunate enough to have your proposal funded, send a thank-you note for the grant. Next, keep the funding agency informed about your activities, progress and accomplishments. Invite them to come to see your program in operation. Send reports that tell how you’ve used the funds. In short, make your investor your partner.第Ⅱ卷(共45分)2009届上海市高三年级第二次十四校联考英语试题- 8 -Ⅰ.Translation(20分)Directions: Translate the following sentences into English.

The French shake hands with everyone(family, children, strangers), at home, on the way to work, at work, on leaving work, on the way home from work, etc. Thus, in an office , perhaps a dozen people, no work will be done for the first half hour while 41 who have not met since the day before, remind each other who they are. However, it is important to remember with whom one has shaken hands on any one day. The French 42 it as extremely bad manners to shake hands twice, as though one had not taken enough 43 for the first time.It is still the 44 to say ―Bonjour‖ and ―Au revoir‖ to others when entering or leaving a shop or bar. This is not because the French are too 45 . It is because they see acknowledging(注意) the existence of others as a way of 46 being rude. This may seem unbearably slight to others, but to the French it is most important. Manners mean civilization to them.Kissing is not so much of a(n) 47 of French life as others supposed. But when it does take place, it must be done 48 , according to the rules. The 49 order is left cheek, right cheek, left cheek---very formal, very stylized. But if you had been around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tones of CO2 each year: equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. To study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen(花粉), kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments(沉淀物), which requires specialize equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled. So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.72.The underlined phrase ―mopping up‖ in the second paragraph means_____.A.cleaning up B.taking in C.sending off D.giving out73.How will the Amazon rainforest react to future climate change?A.It’ll get drier and continue to remove CO2B.It’ll remain steamy, warm, damp and thick.C.It’ll continue to help slow global warming.D.There is no exact answer up to present.74.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?A.There is little information to study the past climate.B.It’s impossible to prove how climate changes in the Amazon rainforest.C.It’s hard to collect information for studies of the past climate in the Amazon rainforest.上海市2009届高三年级第一次十四校联考英语试题- 6 -D.It’s necessary to have specialized equipment and machinery to study the past climate.75.The best title for this passage may probably be__ ___.A.the History of the Rainforests B.Climates of the AmazonC.Secrets of the Rainforests D.Changes of the Rainforests(D)Children are in need of adoption because some birth parents are unable or unavailable to provide adequately for the needs of their child. There are numerous reasons for making an adoption plan. Birth parents may feel they cannot take on responsibility of an unplanned child because they are too young or because they are financially or emotionally unable to provide proper care. They do not feel ready or able to be good parents. In other cases children are in need of adoption because courts have decided that their birth parents are unable to function adequately. Many of these children are victims of abuse or neglect. Regardless of how children come to need adoption, they are put with adoptive parents through private or public social service agencies. Other adoptions may be arranged independently, as when birth parents and adoptive parents come to know each other outside of an agency and then complete the adoption according to the laws and regulations of their states of residence. In the early 1970s there was a dramatic increase n the number of families seeking to adopt, a condition which persists today. For this reason, the number of those who wish to adopt regularly exceeds(超过)the number of infants available. Reasons for this dramatic increase are varied. A major factor has been the choice of many people to delay the start of a family until later in life. Many of these people, in turn, have found themselves to be less fertile at that time, and so they have decided that their desire to have children might best be fulfilled through adoption. In every state, however, there are children who are legally free to be adopted but are desperately waiting for parents. The children in this group are usually older and often have special needs. They may require additional care from a parent because of their physical, emotional, or mental disabilities (which may have been caused by abuse, neglect, or medical or genetic factors). Because of their special needs, these children are challenging to rear. In fact, adoption experts believe that people who adopt these children need special training and preparation in order to successfully rear the child and to integrate(使融入) the child into the family and eventually into society. In cases of international adoption, Americans have adopted orphaned children from places like Korea, India, and Latin America. United States immigration laws allow such children to reside in the United States through a special visa under which the children are classified as immediate relatives of the adopting family. The laws, regulations, and attitudes toward international add option vary a great deal from one country to another. Because of this, people wishing to adopt should use experienced agencies or organizations in order to adopt a child from another country successfully.76.What is the most important reason for the adoption boom in the 1970s?A.Adoption came into fashion among young American couples then.B.Many women shoes adoption for fear that their figure might be affected after bearing.C.Many people who married late found they were less fertile.D.The government carried out family planning and many people had to adopt children.77.By saying ―there are children who are legally free to be adopted but are desperately waiting for parents‖, the author suggests that .A.few people would like to adopt these children for they are hard to raiseB.the children were eager to be loved by their birth parentsC.some people would like to adopt them, but these children prefer their birth parentsD.their birth parent s abandoned them but don’t like other people to adopt them78.According to the passage, international adoption .A.occurs more often than adoption of American infants上海市2009届高三年级第一次十四校联考英语试题- 7 -B.mostly involves European orphansC.should be done through experienced agenciesD.should be banned right away79.What is the author’s primary concern of writing this passage?A.To tell how to adopt a child.B.To tell why and how Americans adopt children.C.To tell the history of child adoption.D.To tell the significance of adopting children.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A.How to deal with listening practiceB.Class atmosphere matters a lot in learningC.Monitoring activities is one of the main tasks of teachersD.How to evaluate student performanceE.Group work needs organizing properlyF.Communication skills play a big role in language learningBoth instructors and learners can get benefits from the following learning strategies as long as they are properly made use of in language learning.80.The information presented in this section focuses on specific conversation, discussion, or presentation skills. The activities are generally self-explanatory, with students expressing opinions, making decisions, solving problems, planning presentations, and so on. Engaged in these activities, students have the possibility of communicating with each other in class. This section also includes lists of expressions used to illustrate different language functions, such as agreeing, disagreeing, and asking for clarity in order to help students expand their knowledge of English.81.In a speaking or listening course, students’ anxieties can affect their learning. For this reason, it is important to establish a friendly, relaxed classroom environment. It may help students to think of the classroom as a laboratory where they can experiment and take risks with the language. In such circumstances, students should realize that errors are a natural and expected part of learning a language. In addition, one of the goals of this part is to encourage students to examine their own opinions and values while at the same time showing respect for the opinions and values of others.82.Many of the activities in this section involve the students’ cooperating work in class. Generally, such an activity taken up by four members seem to work the best. Groups of three or five members may also be effective, depending on the activity. The first unit includes guidelines for organizing group work, with students taking on the following roles: leader, reader, summarizer, reporter, and observer(if necessary). Organizing all activities in this way makes the course truly learner-centered since students must take full responsibility for carrying out each activity. As for seating, group members should arrange their seats or chairs in a small circle to encourage上海市2009届高三年级第一次十四校联考英语试题- 8 -interaction.83.Being a teacher, in the course of group activities, you should circulate from group to group, which helps ensure that students are on task and are using English. While you should not participate in pair or group activities, you need to stay involved in what the students are doing. One important reason to circulate during activities is to keep track of the kinds of problems students have, such as grammatical accuracy, fluency, word choice, pronunciation and intonation, discussion strategies, etc. However, it is generally not effective to correct students’ errors when they are involved in an activity The most practical way to deal with communication problems is to make notes of what you observe as you are circulating. You can then use this information to provide feedback after the activity or to develop future lessons.84.At the beginning of the course, when they need to build up their confidence, students benefit most from encouragement and positive comment. If possible, you’d rather not grade the students’ first few efforts at speaking in a group or to the class. Many students suffer such anxiety in speaking situations that any criticism at this stage can have the opposite effects. Commenting on students’ work does not necessarily mean grading them on the scene Even if the programs requires formal grades, you should try to put off assigning grades until later in the term.第Ⅱ卷(共45分)I.TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.

By applying these multiple means, it is expected that the high housing prices can be lowered.72.According to the passage, what is the average housing price per square meter in China?A.8000 yuan B.10000 yuan C.7000 yuan D.It’s not mentioned here73.Which of the following does NOT support the idea that the average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States?A.Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities.B.American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinesepeople.C.The houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses.D.There are more people who need houses in China.74.What is the main idea of this passage?A.The housing price in China is so high that the government should do something useful to prevent it.B.There are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market.C.The average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States.D.Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public.75.How many measures are mentioned in the last paragraph in order to reduce the high housing prices?A.Four B.Three C.Five D.TwoDSome futurologists have assumed that the vast increase of women in the workforce may portend(预示)a rejection of marriage. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her fa mily’s financial and emotional stability.Psychological factors also should be considered. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.76.It is said in the passage that when the economy slides_____.A.men would choose working women as their marriage partnersB.more women would get married to seek financial securityC.even working women would worry about their marriagesD.more people would prefer to remain single for the time being77.If women find fulfillment through work outside the home,_____.A.they are more likely to dominate their marriage partnersB.their husbands are expected to do more houseworkC.their marriage ties can be strengthenedD.they tend to put their career before marriage78.One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that_____.A.they feel that they have been robbed of their freedomB.they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbandsC.they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectationsD.they tend to suspect their husbands? loyalty to their marriage79.Which of the following statements can best summarize the authors view in the passage?A.The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.B.Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage.C.In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent.D.The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case. Section C(5分)Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading form A-F for each80.You should always seek grant(奖学金)opportunities that match your program’s goals and objectives rather than the other way around. Some investors have special requirements; follow them!82.Your “needs statement”drives your entire grant proposal. The proposed program should revolve around the problems faced by your clients. The purpose of the grant is to meet the specific needs you have identified. If you have not adequately described the reason you need the program, including the research data when possible, the investor will see no reason to invest inyour project.83.Every proposal will require a section that describes the broad goals and measurable objectives of your project. In short, make your investor your partner.第Ⅱ卷(共45分)Ⅰ.Translation(20分)Directions: Translate the following sentences into English.
