Unit 2 Growing pains Section Ⅰ Welcome to the unit &
Reading-Pre-reading
The main problem in family is the communication difficulty between parents and children, or “generation gap (代沟)”. According to a survey, more than50% of the teenagers prefer to tell their friends their problems, but not their parents. Why? Because they don’t think their parents can understand their problems.
That makes it meaningless to have a discussion with their parents. For example, teenagers are in favor of HipHop nowaday s while their parents treat it as a kind of damage to the art. Parents are fond of Beijing Opera while children can’t see the amazing (令人吃惊的) point at all. Then how can they share the topic of HipHop or Beijing Opera?
Having been raised by parents for more than 15 years, teenagers seem to be tired of comfortable life, especially boys. They think they have had the ability to go their own way without the help of their parents.
Teenagers try their best to be less affected by their parents. If there is something that is hard to deal with, they turn to their friends or teachers. Some even ask for advice from online friends whom they’ve never met. They talk little with their parents, spend less time with them and refuse to ask for their parents’help.
What about parents? They don’t want their children to be hurt, even only a little bit. Therefore, they are against anything that they think will be dangerous for their
children. Parents of many of my students often talk to me about their worries. Although they clearly realize that independence is good for teenagers in some fields, they’d like to protect them as much as possible.
