Unit 3 A taste of English humour李仕才一、阅读理解Whenever we see a button,we want to press it because we know that something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example,on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake(假的),like the “close”button on a lift. Many people are in the habit of pressing the“close”button because they don't have the patience to wait. But lifts'“close” buttons are a complete trick,at least in the US—the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press. It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US,making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter safely.Only repair workers can use the buttons to speed up the doorclosing process if they h ave special keys. But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren't completely useless.According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and incr easeswellbeing,”said Ellen J.Langer,a psychology professor at HarvardUniversity.Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don't do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don't live up to their names either.Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computercontrolled traffic signals were introduced. But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little“white lies”,they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close,it is considered to be worth the effort.1.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To describe different fake buttons.B.To explore the functions of fake buttons.C.To analyze various habits of pushing buttons.D.To explain the disadvantages of fake buttons.2.What can we learn about the“close”buttons on a lift in America?A.They work when people press them hard.B.They were designed for a sense of control.C.They nev er speed up the doorclosing process.D.They take the safety of the disabled into account.3.What can we infer about pedestrian crosswalk buttons?A.They can make people feel better.B.They help computers work faster.C.They can control the traffic signals.D.They help pedestrians cross safely.4.Which may be the best title for the passage?A.Buttons in the USAB.Buttons Always LieC.Buttons May Not WorkD.“Close”Buttons on Lifts【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了我们平时生活中所见到的按钮可能是不起作用的。

Unit 3 A taste of English humour李仕才【阅读理解插花】阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Many of us love July because it’s the month when nature’s berries and stone fruits are in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels form British Columbia’s fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection.Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein (蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants (抗氧化物质). The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares? However, they are rich in vitamin C.When combined with berries of slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat “ice cream”. For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer. If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a “soft-serve” creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children’s party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.1. What does the author seem to like about cherries?A. They contain protein.B. They are high in vitamin A.C. They have a pleasant taste.D. They are rich in antioxidants.2. Why is fresh lemon juice used in freezing bananas?A. To make them smell better.B. To keep their colour.C. To speed up their ripening.D. To improve their nutrition.3. What is “a juicer” in the last paragraph?A. A dessert.B. A drink.C. A container.D. A machine.4. From which is the text probably taken?A. A biology textbook.B. A health magazine.C. A research paper.D. A travel brochure.【文章大意】本文是一篇日常生活类说明文。

In February, Principal Jane Hsu sent a letter to parents stating that the Pre-K through fifth grade students would not be given any traditional homework to encourage kids to have free time for reading, playing outside, or doing activities they enjoy."The negative effects of homework have been well established," Hsu wrote in a note to parents. "They include: children’s frustration and exhaustion, lack of time for other activities and family time and, sadly for many, loss of interest in learning."Some parents, however, disagree with the policy change, believing that a lack of focus will cause children to fall behind. Homework has been part of education from the beginning, and has increased in volume in recent years.Hsu’s advice that children should read and spend time wi th their families has upset some parents to the point of considering pulling their children out of P.S. 116. This group feels that homework assignments give children a goal to work toward. Others feel so strongly about the importance of homework that they have begun giving their own homework assignments to their children. An Australian Childhood Foundation survey found that 71% of Australian parents feel they do not spend enough quality time with their children mainly because of the time spent running the household or the time spent helping with homework. Education experts in Australia are saying that parents should stop helping. Doing so will givekids more independence, will give parents more free time, and will help reduce the number of homework-induced arguments in the family. While some research suggests that homework has little academic benefit for elementary students, other research shows homework can help kids develop independence, and confidence. It can also contribute to a sense of belonging or control over their lives. When parents try to help their children with homework, the assistance can take away that feeling and can also drain already exhausted working parents.1.Cancelling traditional homework is aimed at __________.A. allowing students to learn on their ownB. inspiring students to spend more time with parentsC. wishing students to seek self-developmentD. motivating students to help with housework2.What can be concluded from the 1st and 2nd paragraph?A. Jane Hsu is the first principal to cancel homework.B. Jane Hsu has done thorough research on homework.C. Jane Hsu paid little attention to students’ academic records.D. Jane Hsu knows students prefer activities to their subjects.3.Why are some parents strongly against Principal Jane Hsu?A. They have no time to give their children homework.B. They don’t think the school is responsible for their kids.C. They are afraid their kids will fall behind.D. They dislike their kids doing too many activities.4.What is the author’s attitude to parents’ helping kids with homework?A. Supportive.B. Indifferent.C. Ironic.D. 2019高考英语一轮优编选题 Unit 3 A taste of English humour(含解
Unit 3 A taste of English humour李仕才一、阅读理解。
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My f ather is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only ” mome nt, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a computer, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my fat her announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be there. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality(可能发生的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying mys elf peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule ?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.2.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to __________.A. keep her appointment with the eye doctorB. meet her father who was already an old manC. join in the holiday celebration of the companyD. finish her work before the deadline approaching3.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closed in meaning to “_________”.A. abandonedB. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted4.What is the best title for the passage ?A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest WordsC. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of Mind【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲解的是作者对于最悲哀的两个单词if only 的理解及看法。
2019年高考英语一轮复习 专题03 A taste of English humour(押题专练)
专题03 A taste of English humour第一节阅读理解AWhen Danny Wallace, 26, got bored, he put an ad on the World Wide Web reading simply,“Join Me. Send a passport photo.” A year and a half later his east London flat is the headquarters for a global internetbased “club” whose members carry out good deeds for strangers every Friday. It's not common for people in London to talk to strangers. If you see someone struggling with something, part of the brain goes “I want to help”. But the trained part of the brain says, “They will think you are mad or going to mug them”, so you walk away.Join Me now has about 3,000 members around the world who do an act of kindness every Friday. For example, I'm usually out on Friday so I go for one of the standard acts—the unexpected cup of coffee. You might be sitting in a cafe and see an old man in the corner drinking coffee or tea, and you walk up with another cup of whatever they are drinking, and say, “I've bought you a coffee” and walk away. It's a pleasure to see the look of surpr ise on their faces. There can be some suspicion, but I think that was mostly in the early days when I didn't know how to do it properly. I would walk up quite nervously like I was doing something wrong and I didn't know when to leave. In the end, I learned through __trial_and_error__. Sometimes it worked, and other times it didn't. I discovered that you have to walk up with confidence and humour and not “get in their faces”. You say, “This is for you”,then you go. It's hitandrun kindness. And there is no point in doing it halfheartedly. You've got to do it because you really mean it.Join Me is without geographical boundaries, but there are quite a few members in London, and such stories about things happen on the underground or on the buses. One lady got on the bus and put a £10 note down and said, “That's for me and the next nine people.” So at every stop, anyone who got on was told it was paid for. A lot of people were doing this sort of thing anyway. For them it's an excuse or reason to do something nice for a complete stranger, and it gives them the confidence to walk up and start chatting.
Unit 3 A taste of English humour李仕才***阅读理解。
What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music? But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent. When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sale. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce)has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar shops(实体店)can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this. Now, a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to s mell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.1. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?A.Friendly assistant.B.Unique scents.C.Soft background musicD.Attractive window display.2. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .A. show the advantages of brick-and-mortar storesB. urge shop assistants to change their attitudeC. push stores to use sights and soundsD. introduce the rise of e-commerce3. Which statement would the writer agree with?A.Put different shop on the products on display.B.Ask every shop assistant to wear light perfume.C.Place fragrant flowers in the shopD.Expose some coffee bean to air inside a coffee shop.4. The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .A. compare and evaluateB. examine and assessC. inform and explainD. argue and discuss【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。
