Character and Manners of British Formed in Victorian Age
Abstract
The paper focus on characters and manners were developed in Victorian age. The best known quality of the English is reserve, modesty, sense of humor and sportsmanship.
The time of Victoria Era is known as the Victoria period, an era of an era of industrial, political, scientific and military progress within the United Kingdom. But how the British‟s etiquette formed in this era?
Key words: reserve; modesty; sense of humor; sportsmanship; Victorian age.
Ⅰ. Introduction
1.1. Victorian era
Victoria was the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . Her reign as the Queen lasted 63 years and 7 months, longer than that of any other British monarch before or since, and her regin is the longest of any female monarch in history.
Victorian era was known its morals and modesty polite, also formed the progressive conception of the sexy and racial equality. The polite society which the middle class was strongly influenced on decency, morality, conscious rectitude, self-satisfaction based on wealth and unquestioning acceptance of authority and orthodoxy.
1.2. Victorian behavior‟s impact
Queen Victoria had a great reputation among European for her elegant personal cultivation. She set a succession of strict rules. The children were strictly disciplined; their life consisted of “don‟ts”. Wives must obey their husbands and their dress concealed their whole body except their hands and face or its shows …improper‟. Queen Victoria is also very strict to herself, she requested herself to elegance, dignity, decency.
Moreover, the Queen‟s behavior had a tremendous impact on the middle class as they have modeled the highest standard. Like gentle, gentle lady and so on such words origin from this era.

2.1. Reserve and Modesty
To other Europeans, the best known quality of the British is …reserve‟.
A reserved person is one who does not talk very much to strangers, does not show much emotion, and seldom gets excited. In my opinion, this reluctance to Victorian era‟s strict rules, they must keep elegance anytime no matter what they want to do.
Closely related to English reserve is English modesty. Within their hearts, the English are perhaps no less conceited than anybody else, but in their relations with others they value at least a show of modesty.
2.2. Sense of Humor
Since reserve, a show of modesty, and a sense of humor are part of their own nature, the typical Englishmen tends to except them in others. Its starting point is self-deprecation, and its great enemy is conceit.
The sense of humor shows their optimism, as far as I‟m concerned, they are always proud their glorious history likes Victorian age which is a peaked period of The Industry Revolution and a period of prosperous economic and culture.
2.3. Sportsmanship
Rules are the essence of sport, and sportsmanship is the ability to practice a sport in obedience to its rules, while also showing generosity to one‟s opponent and good temper in defeat. Moreover, sportsmanship as
an idea is applied to life in general.
In Victorian era , they must obey all kinds of rules, wives must obey their husbands, children must obey family rules and so on. Thus they were developed a habit of obedience. And they believed gentle and friendly all the time.
Ⅲ.Summary
All in all, for my part, Victorian era had been a great influence on British characteristic. The Victoria time was called …polite society‟ and its also a time of British gentleman eventually forming and perfecting period.
Absolutely, as the development of society and the deepened International communication, the value of English people changed by environment. But this subconscious gentleman has influenced generations of British people.
