An Respectable Patriot

(<>) Hardly is there excuse for me not to show my sincere respect and admiration to Yung Ming. There is no doubt that he was the first person whose eyes had been opened to the world and tried to bring in all advanced institutions and technology to Ting. His unchangeable patriotism and long-range aspiration all win my admiration.

A person, having been in America long enough to become thoroughly natured and a citizen, whose taste and feelings are entirely based on the America culture, is faced with two choices, either staying in America to enjoy the inviting opportunity or going back to China where he has nothing except for some humble relatives. Now, if you are the person, what’s your answer? I’m afraid most of you will choose the former. However, Yung Wing went back to China, even though he had almost forgotten his native tongue and Ting was a conventional, rotten and imperial court.

Look at his schemes: First, Ting should sent excellent students to America so that they can come back with the scientific educational, administerial and military principles. Fortunately, Ting adopted this proposal and finally sent 120 students to America, though the subsequent action was cancelled. The second scheme’s succeed with the approval and appreciation of Tsang Kwol Fan Yung Wing dispatched abroad to purchase machinery for the manufacture of weapons, which functioned the establishment of Kiang Nang Arsenal. He never stopped devoting himself

to the development of old China. When there was nothing to do , he translated foreign works about law and geography to Chinese, which he thought was beneficial to his countrymen.

China, in her international relations, commerce and other intercourse with foreign countries, suffered great disadvantage. To change this condition, he suggested establishing a bank system.

He saw Chinese were forced to be coolie in foreign countries. He saw how Ting court was forced to sign those shamed and unfair treaties. Without advanced ships of war and powerful military forces, our motherland would devoured step by step, so he was busy running to raise money for the training and equipment of Ting’s army.

.......

Just as what he said:“I was ready to die for China at any time, provided that the death was an honorable one.” ,he devoted all his knowledge and mind to Ting.

I show my most sincere respect to him.

Some good expressions

1)If my memory serves me right……she had thin lips, supported by a

square chin-both indicative of firmness and authority.

2)This announcement cast a deep gloom over the whole school. A dead

silence came over all of us.
