V. Exercises
Key to Exercise 1
Technology and science are developing by leaps and bounds. Some people believe that as science develops, we will see tremendous improvement in terms of quality of life. But I believe that the most significant improvement has appeared---the computer. With the advent of computer, we are easier to receive quality education in an inexpensive way; we can conveniently keep in touch with our families and friends and we can entertain ourselves in various ways.
To begin with, armed with computers, we can have easy access to quality education. The chance to receive superior education is a symbol of quality life. In the past, only children from wealthy and powerful families have the opportunity to study abroad. Nowadays, however, quality education can be gained when you turn on your computer. Take open classes/public classes as an example. I often watch open classes offered by top universities in the United States like Harvard and Yale University. Despite the fact that I live in China, I still have the opportunity to learn something new and exciting. Without computer, this kind of thing can never happen. In a word, computer enhances people’s quality of life by
offering inexpensive and superior education.
Besides, with computers, we can keep in touch with our families and friends. This is a hectic world: parents are busy earning money; children are involved in various papers and projects. Thanks to the computer, busy creatures are able to contact with their loved ones. Before the invention of computer, we worried about our parents when they were out of town on business. We worried about our children when they studied abroad. Telephone is not good enough: we can only talk with them, but we want to see them; we can only listen to their descriptions about their living environment, but we actually want to see with our own eyes their bedroom, their kitchen. Traveling is not good too: most of us lack both time and money. Computers can help solve these problems. Without traveling, we can keep close touch with our loved ones, which is a real relief. Thanks to the computer, the distance between friends and families is shortened, thus bettering our life.
Thirdly, computers afford good entertainment for people of different age groups. In other words, using a computer, a whole family’s desire for relaxation can be met. My family is a typical example. My father, a sixty year old man, finds computer indispensable in his life: he can watch his favorite television series
