How to assess the students in class(17)

When I was a new English teacher, I was interesting in English.

I had confidance, I believed I can teach my English class very well. So, I had a very good design of my class. I built an English language environment, I talked English all the class, I designed kinds of games for them,I used my body language. In these ways, I found eighty perents of students can become active, but I felt that what missing somethings.

What’s that? I thought for a long time, until that le sson. Two years ago, I listened a good lesson in SanDu primary school, Shi Weiwei taught that lesson, all that lesson, every student active and interactive. Every one with a smile of

self---confidance.I carefully listened for a while, I found the secret. Miss Shi gave a small star to every student when he successfully joined that game. So,every one kept a high interest, because they wanted to get a star.So that lesson had a good result, it can be said perfectly.

Since that lesson, I know the assessment is very important for our English lessons. I not only asked the other teachers, but also looked up the relevant information about the assessment.

So, I build my assessment style. I named my assessment method “ Star Assessment”.

There are fifty students in my class, I divid five groups. In my class, If they want to get a star for their group, they must do they best. They must listen to me and the other students carefully, speak English loudly, answer the questions actively, finish the task quickly, do the homework neatly and so on.But if someone can’t obey the rules, I can’t give a star to him, so at the end of this lesson, their group will be the least group of the stars.

After a long period of training,in my class, I don’t need to say a word at all, every group members remind each other,because they want to get a star for their group. But some student make mistakes when they answer me, I don’t angry, I find something good of him,such as,“your pronunciation is quite well, how brave you are.You can raise your hand.”Then I incourage him “Don’t be nervous, relax,sit down and think it over”. He never feel shy or nervousand hands up again and again, until he get a star for their group.

Except this way, I also try to use the other assessment. For example, I use the growth bag to assess them. At the end of every

lesson, I often give them some homework.( do a survey, write a composition,draw a beautiful pictures and the other things about the English textbooks). I put them in the growth bag, then I give a star to them.

As time goes by, everyone in my class become active and interactive. They proud to do that, when I see their smiling faces, I feel so happy.

I am deeply aware. The assessment is not only help the students develop their English level, build up their self—confidance, but also raise their interest, learn to self—reflact. You kill two birds with one stone. I hope I can try my best to help the students become super stars.

I have been insisting to look for the best way to assess my students, I’m sure I can do it wel l.
