and into older age is different from previous generations. How are ideas about the life cycle changing? One American writer,Gail Sheehy, has identified some new trends in the life cycle. She separates life into decades,10﹣year sections. Her definitions are optimistic and positive, and they may help people understand themselves as they grow older. The ages between twenty and thirty are times of experimentation.People in their twenties try many new things with a lot of energy. They search for a path for theirlives.Their responsibilities are not usually serious, and they can experiment with lifestyles choices. But when they become thirty, they pass to a stage called"First Adulthood."In this stage of life, people begin to think for themselves. They become independent and more ambitious. They begin to define themselves within society. In the next stage of life, the forties, people begin to prepare themselves for leadership positions.Gail Sheehy sees people in their forties as working hard. They want to be successful. They have to take care of their families and begin to be masters of their work and themselves. She calls moving from this stage into the fifties the passage to the"Age of Mastery."People in fifties have new positive feeling. They begin to see different things they can do with their lives. They become adventurers. They also begin to question their values. They want to live their lives better, with more truth. They struggle to understand the world and themselves. She calls the next stage the"Age of Integrity."When people become sixty, they want to live their lives with real values. They work to keep their minds active. They recommit themselves to their families with love. They begin to take some active risk ﹣taking for the future. It is a time of real maturity.Ms.Sheehy well)people are great at saving brain power. To do a task, the brain recruits different networks,or the highways on which different types of information flow, depending on the task to be done.A research team from Montreal,Canada, compared what are known as functional brain connections between seniors who are monolingual (speaking or using only one language)and seniors who are bilingual. The team established that years of bilingualism change how the brain carries out tasks that require concentrating on one piece of information without becoming distracted by other information. This makes the brain more efficient andeconomical with its resources. To arrive at this finding, the team asked two groups of seniors (one of monolinguals and one of bilinguals)to perform a task that involved focusing on visual information (the color of an object)while ignoring spatial information (the position of the object). The researchers compared the networks between different brain areas as people did the task. They found that monolinguals recruited a larger circuit with multiple connections, whereas bilinguals recruited a small circuit that was more appropriate for the required information. These findings were published in the Journal of Neurolinguistics."After years of daily practice managing interference between two languages, bilinguals become experts at selecting relevant information and ignoring information that can distract from a task.In this case, bilinguals showed higher connectivity between visual processing areas located at the back of the brain. This area is specialized in detecting the visual characteristics of objects and therefore is specialized in the task used in this study. These data indicate that the bilingual brain is more efficient and economical,as it recruits fewer regions and only specialized regions,"explained Dr.Ansaldo, the head of the team.Bilinguals therefore have two cognitive (connected with mental processes of understanding)benefits.First, having more centralized and specialized functional connections saves resources compared to the multiple and more diverse brain areas allocated by monolinguals to accomplish the same task.Second, bilinguals achieve the same result by not using the brain's frontal regions, which are vulnerable to aging. This may explain why the brains of bilinguals are better equipped to stave off (to delay sth.)the signs of cognitive aging or dementia (a serious mental disorder caused by brain disease or injury). All the benefits of bilingualism have yet to be discovered.27.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A.Bilinguals are more efficient and economical with brain resources.B.Monolinguals do better in focusing on a piece of information while performing a task than bilinguals do.C.Daily practice of dealing with two languages enables bilinguals to effectively avoid being influenced by irrelevant information.D.Monolinguals use larger brain areas and more connections when doing a task.28.The benefits of being bilingual are the following EXCEPT.A.Bilingual people are unlikely to develop dementia when they grow old.B.Bilingual people have the cognitive advantages.C.Being bilingual is helpful to saving brain resources by using more centralized and specialized functional connections.D.Bilingual people can accomplish the same task as monolinguals do without using the frontal areas of brain.29.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To tell readers the differences between bilinguals and monolinguals.B.To present disadvantages of being monolingual.C.To tell readers bilingualism can save brain resources.D.To discuss how to become a bilingual.30.What type of writing is this text?A.An argumentationB.A news reportC.A descriptive 广东省佛山市高明区2016-2017学年高二英语下学期晚练(九)一、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
In early societies, people relied on a simple system of exchange (交换). Perhaps a good hunter(猎人) had more animal skins than he could use. His neighbor, a good fisherman, might have too many fish but needed furs (皮毛) to protect his children from the cold. Both soon realized that their problems could be easily solved by exchanging what they did not need for what they did need. This method(方法) of exchange is called barter. The word comes from the Italian barattare and the French barater, which mean “to trade.”As societies developed, people in ancient times turned to many different things in the search for a good way of exchange, or money. One of the earliest forms of money was cattle (牛). The richest person was the one who owned the most farm animals, such as cows and sheep. Cattle were called capitale in Latin, and from that Latin word we get the English word “capital,” meaning “wealth.”But people came to realize that this new method often failed to produce satisfactory(令人满意的) results. A cow or a sheep must be fed and cared for. Sometimes they died of disease. Some animals were fat and some were thin. A person who wanted to sell something might believe that it was worth(值得) much more than one cow. The buyer might not be willing to give the seller two. Paying a cow and a half 。
was certainly not a good way to solve the problem. When people began to trade with people who lived far away, again a new way of exchange had to be found. Soo n such things as grain (谷物) and salt came into use (开始被使用). They could be weighed exactly. They could be store d(储存) and transported easily. Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt. And it is from salarium, the Latin word for “salt money,” that our own word “salary” comes. We still speak of people as not being worth their salt if they do not do their jobs well.1. what's the meaning of the underlined word barter in paragraph 1?A. 电池B.物物交换 C货物 D.货币2.
