AMarathon is the supreme discipline of long-distance running. They are not only attractive for top athletes, but also for hobby runners. The choice of events is almost endless. Now we have put together some most breathtakingly beautiful ones that you’ll be tempted (诱惑) to run holding a camera.Ultra-trail Angkor, CambodiaThe newest of a series of Angkor marathons, this endurance test offers 32-km, 64-km and 128-km routes around the famous temples, including Bayon and Angkor Wat. Watch out for monkeys, and the gigantic tree vines that memorably hug some of the great buildings.Dodo Trail, MauritiusCrossing rugged coastline and tropical forests, the Dodo Trail is full of wildlife, although the famous dodo bird remains, sadly, extinct. While the demanding 50km Xtreme route covers 828m-high Black River Peak, a beginner-friendly Mini Dodo Trail (10 km) is easier.Great Ocean Road marathon, AustraliaAnother well-known scenic coastal drive, southern Australia’s Great Ocean Road stages a footrace every May. Neck-ache could be a problem: in one direction lies the scenic South Sea, and in another handsome forest and, if you’re lucky, a koala or two. Be warned, however, that the series of steep slopes make this one of the toughest marathons.Big Five marathon, South AfricaMarathon meets safari at the privately owned Entabeni Game Reserve every June. The start time is dependent on the race-day location of the Big Five members – African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinos – as organizers try to guarantee sightings.1. Which marathon is suitable for less experienced runners?A. Ultra-trail Angkor.B. Dodo Trail.C. Great Ocean Road marathon.D. Big Five marathon.2. Why does the writer mention “neck-ache” in Great Ocean Road marathon?A. To highlight the wonderful scenery.B. To present the difficulty of the event.C. To attract attention to physical health.D. To warn runners of dangerous animals.3. What do the four marathons have in common?A. Risky and tiring routes.B. Beautiful coastal views.C. Chances to see wild animals.D. Fixed time for annual events.BMany people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new a made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all. High levels of knowledge can make people too attached to traditional ways of viewing problems across fields the arts, sciences, and politics. High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist. How long we stay on the clock and how we spend that time are under careful examination in many workplaces. The young banker who eats lunch at his desk is probably seen as a go-getter, while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office. “People from cultures that value relationships more than ours does are shocked by the thought of eating alone in front of a computer”, says Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Social interaction has been shown to lift mood(情绪) and get people thinking in new directions and in ways that could help improve any post-lunch effort.Markman also promotes off-task time. “Part of being a good thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated to what you are working on at the moment but give you fresh ideas about your work,” he says. “Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity. So, when people do things to increase their life satisfaction, they also make themselves more effective at work.”4. What does Ellen Langer’s study show?A. It is worthwhile to be a perfectionistB. Translation makes people knowledgeable.C. Simpler jobs require greater caution.D. Moderate effort produces the best result.5. The underlined word “go-getter” in paragraph 3 refers to someone Who_______.A. is good at handling pressureB. works hard to become successfulC. a has a natural talent for his job.D. gets on well with his co-workers6 . What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. A good thinker is able to inspire other people.B. Experience unrelated to your job is useless.C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind.D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity.7 . What does the text seem to advocate?A. Middle-of-the-road work habits.B. Balance between work and family.C. Long-standing cultural traditions.D. Harmony in the work environment.CClothes were once used until they fell apart. Not today. In high-income countries in particular, clothing and footwear are increasingly frequently bought, thrown away and replaced with new fashions, which are themselves soon thrown away and replaced. The so-called ‘Fast fashion’ is having a surprising environmental impact. ‘Take water. The fashion industry, one of the world’s largest users of water, consumes anywhere from 20 trillion to 200 trillion litres every year. ‘Then there are microplastics. Plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester (聚酯纤维) and other polymer-based textiles, and make up between 20% and 35% of the micro plastics choking the oceans. Added to this are specific chemicals, suchas those used to make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required to protect crops such as cotton.Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy. That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing processes, especially recycling. There’s a big role for research--both academic and industrial--in achieving these and other ambitions.Researchers could begin by helping to provide more accurate estimates of water use. There is also work to be done on improving and expanding textiles recycling. Undoubtedly, used textiles go to landfill in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials. Such recycling requires the manual separation of fibres, as well as buttons and zips. Different fibres are not easy to identify by eye, and overall such manual processes are time-consuming. Machinery is being developed that can help. Technologies also exist to recycle used fibres chemically and to create high-quality fibres that can be reused in clothing. But these are nowhere near the scale needed.Another challenge for researchers is to work out how to get consumers and manufacturers to change their behavior. Other research questions include finding ways to encourage people to purchase long lasting goods; exploring how to satisfy desires for something new while reducing environmental impact; and understanding why certain measures can be successfully scaled up whereas others fail.8. Why does the author mention “water”, “microplastics” and “chemicals” in Paragraph 2?A. To introduce a topic.B. To prove a point.C. To provide an idea.D. To give a definition.9. Which of the following goes against the concept of “circular economy”?A. Efforts are made to lengthen the lifespan of textiles.B. Worn-out clothes are used as dishcloths and oil rags.C. High-quality fibres are created to be reused in clothing.D. Fashion industry is encouraged to release new designs more often.10. What is the right thing for the fashion industry researchers to do?A. To make sure that all of the used textiles go to landfill.B. To separate fibres, as well as buttons and zips manually.C. To improve and expand textile recycling to a larger extent.D. To encourage consumers to satisfy their desires for fashion.11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A. Say no to the so-called fast fashionB. Address the challenges for researchersC. Embrace more of the circular economyD. Cut fast fashion’s environmental impactDQuantum (量子) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. A friend has been sending me articles on how quantum computers might help solve some of the biggest challenges we face as humans. I’ve also had exchanges with two quantum-computing experts. One is computer scientist Chris Johnson who I see as someone who helps keep the field honest. The other is physicist Philip Taylor. For decades, quantum computing has been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction.” This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. “What’snew,” Johnson wrote, “is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.”As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. Lots of other technologies have gone through stages of excitement. But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” And that brings me back to Taylor, who suggested that I read his book Q for Quantum. After I read the book, Taylor patiently answered my questions about it. He also answered my questions about PyQuantum, the firm he co-founded in 2016. Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum. The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin (幅度)” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.”Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson.12.Regarding Johnson’s concerns, the author feels ________.A. sympatheticB. unconcernedC. doubtfulD. excited13. What leads to Taylor’s optimism about quantum computing?A . His dominance in physics. B. The competition in the field.C. His confidence in PyQuantum.D. The investment of tech companies.14. What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?A. Open.B. Cool.C. Useful.D. Resistant.15. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor?B. Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology?C. Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being?D. Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype?第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分12.5 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

One of them told her about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother was grieving deeply. Could Ferrell offer some support? That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Ferrell was looking for. To celebrate her 53rd, the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime (风铃) with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near” written on it. It now hangs in the four-year old’s bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants. This is not the first time that Ferrell has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th, in 2016, she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond Its aim is simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found via Ferrell’s blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.Ferrell pays for everything herself: gift cards, pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs, and care packages. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores. “I got a couple of gift cards form birthday this year and was like YESSS!” It’s Ferrell’s party, and she’ll give if she wants to.24.What were the unusual messages Ferrell got on her 53rd birthday?A.Help requests.B.Donation offers.C.Gift ideas.D.Birthday wishes.25.What can we learn about Ferrell from her gift to the Smith family?A.She is caring and brave.B.She is loving and helpful.C.She is patient and romantic.D.She is creative and determined.26.Which of the following best describes Love in Action?A.It involves people in acts of kindness.B.It holds the belief that kindness pays off.C.It offers aid within Ferrell’s neighborhood.D.It mainly aims to educate kids to help out.27.Why does Ferrell’s family give her warnings?A.She thinks little of her family’s concern.B.She treats strangers better than her family.C.She is financially dependent on her family.D.She is too ready to give away her birthday gifts. In many families today, both the mother and the father have jobs outside the home. This can make it difficult to take care of the children. To help, some companies are changing the work rules. These companies are trying to be more family-friendly.What are companies doing to become family-friendly? Many companies are allowing their employees (雇员) to work flexible (灵活的) hours. With flexible hours, people can work full time, but they don’t have to work to a nine-to-five schedule. Some employees choose to come early and leave early. Some employees choose to work ten hours one day and six hours the next. Most companies say that flexible hours increase productivity. In the United States, about one-third of full-time employees have flexible work schedules.Family-friendly companies also allow two employees to share one job. Each employee does half the job and gets half the salary. In the United States, 27% of the companies offer some kind of job sharing. Many family-friendly companies also give paid leave to both parents when a baby is born. In many countries, employers have to give female workers time off before and after the birth of a child. In the United States, for example, female employees get 12 weeks of unpaid time off. New mothers can stay at home, but they don t get their salary. In some countries, employers have to give all workers paid leave for the birth of their child. In Finland, for example, both male and female employees get paid leave. Women get 105 days of paid leave and men get 42.The way people work is changing. For many people, that is a good thing.28.Some companies make some changes in their work rules toA.allow parents to work at home B.give parents more time to relaxC.provide parents with more job opportunities.D.enable parents to take care of theirchildrenA.can arrange their work time themselves B.can work with their babies aroundC.must work from nine to five D.must share jobs with othersA.they have physical problems B.they have a new babyC.they do a good job D.they do extra workA.some companies’ family-friendly rules B.ways of job sharing in some companies C.job opportunities for female employees D.companies’ work rules about getting leaveLike any doctor, Jacques Fellay wants to give his patients the best care. Hidden inside our bodies are genetic (基因的) markers that can tell him which patients could probably have diseases such as AIDS and provide early treatments. However, there are worries for Fellay: they contain sensitive details that could lead to embarrassment, discrimination or even worse.A new kind of encryption, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) (全同态加密), is making it possible for data users to run multiple operations on genetic data without seeing the contents. This can help end big data’s privacy problem, and Fellay’s patients can be some of the first to benefit. In 1978, the concept of homomorphic encryption (HE) was firstly proposed. According to it, one could encrypt and share data with others, who could analyze and perform calculations on the data with no idea what it means. After getting the data back, the data user could simply arrive at the result using the secret key and it will make total sense. In 2009, Craig Gentry firstly provided a workable FHE program. Like HE, it rests on a mathematical idea called a homomorphism, which mostly relies on using algebra (代数) to map data from one form to another without changing its underlying structure. However, it supports multiple operations on encrypted data, rather than only one calculation in HE.Later, Gentry went on to work at IBM, which now has complicated FHE tools to run encrypted data. In the medical field, for example, it detected signs of COVID-19 infection by applying FHE to analyze the encrypted CT scans of more than 1, 500 people’s lungs. In a paper published in October 2021, the team used FHE to collect data from multiple sourcesand predicted the effect of cancer treatments or the process of HIV infection, as in Fellay’s case.Workable, but still slow: calculations on the FHE-encrypted data could take millions of times longer than those on raw data. But, as Goldwasser says, “If you believe that security is not a plus, but it’s a must,” she says, “then in some sense there is no overhead.”32.What is Fellay concerned about?A.Serious diseases.B.Sensitive patients.C.The safety of personal data.D.The lack of genetic information.33.In what way is FHE different from HE?A.It speeds up the analyses.B.It allows more calculations.C.It prevents direct access to data.D.It depends on the use of algebra.34.What is Goldwasser’s attitude towards FHE?A.Contradictory.B.Unclear.C.Favorable.D.Intolerant. 35.What is the main idea of the text?A.FHE protects privacy in the big data era.B.FHE opens a new world for medical workers.C.Gentry proposed a new encryption technology.D.Homomorphic encryption developed over time.三、七选五Often when we have an uncomfortable feeling, such as sadness, fear or shame, our first reaction is to reject that feeling. We may tell ourselves that it is a bad feeling we don’t want to have. 36 For example, some people try to push it away or use alcohol to feel better.Certainly no one wants to feel emotional pain all the time, but when we reject our emotions,we may actually make things worse. Often emotions arise as they give us useful information about the, world. 37An alternative to pushing away our emotions is to accept them. Accepting means that wemust practice allowing our emotions to be what they are without judging them. 38 When we’re happy,we have to accept not only that happiness is a short-term condition, but also that we won’t always be happy. This goes for every type of emotions.Emotions help us decide what we should stay away from and what we should approach.39 Therefore, accepting emotions is helpful, because when we listen to our emotions,we can actually learn important information.40 After all, it’s our instincts (本能) to avoid them. With practice, though, we can learn to accept our emotions. Meditation (冥想) and mindful breathing exercises can be helpful.A.We have emotions for a reason.B.Actually,it is vital to handle our emotions.C.It isn’t easy to learn how to accept emotions.D.It also means accepting that emotions will change.E.Then we may do something to get rid of that feeling.F.Therefore,pushing away emotions isn’t the best idea.G.Without emotions,we would make terrible decisions all the time.四、完形填空One day I visited an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a businesssaid.“Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. This time of year is not only about celebrating success, but saying thanks to all of those who helped make these episodes possible. When something looks easy, it usually means there are a bunch of talented people behind the scenes making it happen.Although our shows feature me and my photography, the episodes were produced by my company. Every shoot had at least one camera operator and an all-round field operation person. Otherwise, I'd have been bumbled(笨手笨脚)around, trying to film myself while also taking photos. Dante Fernandes has been in the field with me for six years, putting up with every possible weather situation and countless seasickness situations than you can imagine.Depending on the shoot, we were also supported by a lot of other people, such as drone(无人机)pilot, Daina Buchner, who flew drones to capture beautiful shots for the Shark Week episode, and the people who were on camera with me, like Mermaid Linden. I was so lucky to have so many biologists, field guides, camera operators and sound operators. The entire team at Discovery helped me a lot, especially our executive producer Christina Bavetta, who watched every single rough shot and helped us be even better at what we did with her incredible insights and production notes. So as you watch the show this year, don't just enjoy the beauty and humor of these adventures, but also give a thought to all the people behind the scenes who made it happen.24. What is the author?A. A host.B. A guide.C. A biologist.D. A photographer.25. Why did the author write the text?A. To attract more audiences.B. To recall the process of work.C. To thank the people involved.D. To show how to make the episodes.26. Which of the following can best describe the author's work?A. Relaxing.B. Challenging. C、Well-paid. D. Regular.27. How did Christina Bavetta help the author?A. By offering some useful advice.B. By teaching how to write notes.C. By flying drones to take pictures.D. By telling stories on camera.CDespite Ecoador's tough protection, there have been many giant tortoises(陆龟)killed recently, probably for their meat for financial gains made by wildlife hunters. For a century, Ecuador's beautiful and endangered giant tortoises have been protected. Hunting the tortoise is illegal under Ecuador's laws. These species, living on the Galápagos Islands, are one of the largest living reptiles(爬行动物) with the longest life span of all vertebrates. The oldest tortoise on record was 175 years old.“This isn’t a solitary incident,” the Galápagos Conservancy, a US-based conservation organization said. “In September 2021, the remains of 15 other endangered giant tortoises were found on Isabela. The reptiles had likely been hunted for consumption.”The islands are located around 600 miles off the shore of Ecuador's coast, in the Pacific Ocean. The archipelago(群岛) is considered one of the world's best places to see wildlife, and it is home to animal and plant species that are found nowhere else in the world.Their famously fearless wildlife is believed to have been a source of inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution, following his visit to the islands in 1835. The islands were actually discovered by accident in 1535 when a Spanish ship was blown off course while sailing from Panama to Peru. Ironically enough, the ship's captain was unimpressed by the islands, writing to the king that they were “worthless”. That view, of course, changed over time. Now about 25,000 people live in the four inhabited islands of Santa Cruz, Isabela. San Cristóbal, and Floreana. There were once at least 250,000 giant tortoises on the islands; there are fewer than15,000 in the wild today—and two subspecies are already extinct. “Evidence from the 2021investigation showed that the reptiles bad likely been hunted for consumption,” Galápagos Conservancy continued. “Many are worried the population will continue to decrease if serious action isn't taken soon. We must safeguard giant tortoises and the ecosystems they depend on.”28. What made Ecuador's giant tortoises endangered according to the text?A. Illegal hunting.B. Natural disasters.C. Environmental pollution.D. The decrease in shelters.29. What does the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 3 mean?A. Serious.B. Demanding.C. Single.D. Disturbing.30. What did the wildlife on the Galápagos Islands contribute to?A. Darwin's theory of evolution.B. People living on the archipelago.C. The sailing from Panama to Peru.D. The discovery of the archipelago.31. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?A. The way to safeguard the tortoises.B. The further research on the tortoises.C. The long history of the tortoises.D. The urgency of protecting the tortoises.DRaising livestock(牲畜)is a big part of the carbon emission from agriculture. But it is hard to change people's habits and get them to give up their hamburgers, especially since more than one-third of Americans eat fast food every day. We previously called for carbon labels on everything from buildings to burgers. Now, a new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that labels on fast food affected people's choices. The study said shifting current dietary patterns to more sustainable diets with less red meat could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and have health benefits. The 5,000 participants in the study were shown fake menus. One group got menus with high climate impact labels on red meat items and another had low climate impact labels on fish or plant-based burgers. Both menus were effective in reducing the orders for red meat。

This book won both the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and the Carnegie Medal.21.Which book was published by Penguin?Getting to Antarctica is not easy. The few who are lucky enough to visit this most mysterious continent do so by ship. To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through an extremely violent area of ocean called the Drake Passage, considered to be the roughest stretch of sea on the planet.Walls of water thirty, sometimes forty feet high continually crashed against our ship for two solid days. We would hold on to a rope inside the ship while being violently tipped(倾斜) to one extreme side, then to the other, and then back again. My daughter Claire and I were as mentally prepared as we could be.About two and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Soon, we noticed small black spots on nearby pieces of floating ice. Emperor penguins! Then, we began the two-mile hike over the ice to the penguin colony. Within several hundred yards, small groups of emperors, perhaps ten or so at a time, greeted us, sliding on their bellies and making their wonderful noises, sort of a long, high-pitched sound. One day two adult emperors with their three chicks following them approached Claire, who was resting on the ice. They left the chicks with her, as if she were the babysitter.Twenty minutes later they returned to collect the chicks. And I will never forget the penguin that, when I jokingly asked which way back to the helicopters, pointed a wing in the correct direction. Every night aboard our safe and warm ship, we thought about what it takes to survive in Antarctica, an incredibly harsh place. But each day on the ice, we also thought about the Drake Passage, the impact of thecam e to respect the power of that sea. We still talk about the penguins, as I’m sure we always will. But we talk about the Drake Passage, too. Both experiences were unforgettable, and one would not have been possible without the other.24.Why is the Drake Passage mentioned in the first paragraph?A.The water in the area is usually calm.B. People can see very attractive scenery there.C. A lot of sea animals often appear in the area.D. It is quite a dangerous section ofthe journey.25.What is the theme of the third paragraph?A. The visitors appreciated the penguins.B. The living habits of emperor penguins.C.How penguins made their wonderful noises.D. The appearance and shape of emperor penguins.26.What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?A.Penguins try to avoid human beings.B.Penguins are not afraid of human beings.C.Claire played with the two adult penguins for a long time.D.Claire led the young penguins to where the adult penguins stayed.27.What does the underlined word “endure”in the last paragraph mean?A.Promote.B. Break.C. Arrange.D. Experience.CPortia Kapraun has always seen unwelcome ads on Twitter, usually from major brands pitching (竭力推销) her expensive jewelry or vehicles that she, as a librarian in Indiana, could not afford. Ms. Kapraun was not interested. But she soon saw the ads again. And again. And again. “These feel like low-end ads,” she said. In a shaky advertising market in an uncertain economy, ads that few people want to see suddenly seem to be everywhere.Advancements in digital advertising technology were meant to improve users’ experience. People interested in shoes are intended to get ads for sneakers and boots, not repeated pitches promoting gold investments. And the technology is supposed to remove misleading or dangerous pitches. But lately, on several platforms, the opposite seems to be happening for a variety of reasons, including a slowdown in the overall digital ad market. As numerous deep-pocketed marketers have pulled back, and the softer market has led several digital platforms to lower their ad pricing, opportunities have opened up for less demanding advertisers.Advertising experts agree that poor-quality ads appear to be increasing greatly. They point to a variety of potential causes: internal troubles at technology companies, weak content moderation (审核), and high-level advertisers seeking other choices. Then, there’s the economy: A recent survey of 43 multinational companies representing more than $44 billion in advertising spending found that nearly 30 percent planned to cut back on their marketing spending last year.Other factors are also contributing to lower advertising quality. Social media advertising, once only practiced by specialists, is now easily available to anyone. Many of them are avoiding targeted ads—placements intended to reach specific audiences, usually at a higher cost—in favor of a cheaper spray-and-pray (广撒网式的) approach online, hoping to catch the attention of gullible (简洁受骗的) or bored shoppers. Major social media platforms are now like “a mall that used to be good”, Corey Richardson, vice president at a multicultural ad company, says. “But now there’s no longer a mall there—it’s justa calendar store and a place sling beepers (传呼机). ”28. What message does the a uthor want to deliver in Portia Kapraun’s story?A. Repeated ads have a strong power of persuasion.B. Social media users often encounter unwanted ads.C. Major brands usually prefer social media advertising.D. An uncertain economy leads to lower levels of consumption.29. What can be inferred about the “less demanding advertisers” mentioned in Paragraph 2?A. They are forced to exit the digital ad market.B. They have benefited from advertising experts.C. They can now advertise at a more affordable price.D. They work hard to improve their users’ experience.30. What is Corey Richardson’s attitude to major social media platforms?A. Favorable.B. HopefulC. Unclear.D. Negative.31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A. Where is social media advertising heading?B. What is shaking up the online advertising market?C. Why are you seeing so many bad digital ads now?D. How are targeted ads impacting your purchase decisions?DBoth Roberto and Keith have a 45-minute commute(通勤) time from their homes to their workplace. When Roberto drives, he has realistic expectations of how others drive and how long the trip should take. Overall, he is able to adapt to any unexpected challenges he may face on the road. He rarely becomes angry. By contrast, Keith drives with a tendency for becoming angry easily, partly due to unrealistic expectations of other drivers, his quickness to personalize and feel threatened by the actions of others, and his inability to calm his anger. The difference between how Roberto and Keith experience their drive to work, especially with regard to getting angry, is influenced very much by their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is crucial for helping individuals choose constructive over destructive anger. A key aspect of healthy anger is being able to pause and reflect on, rather than react to, our thoughts, feelings, and senses associated with getting angry.Self-regulation and empathy(同理心) are two important components of emotional intelligence, which can be a buffer(缓冲) against destructive anger. Self-regulation helps us to control our moods. Empathy helps us to recognize the humanity in others and ourselves.Studies suggest that training in emotional intelligence can powerfully impact how anger is managed. This was supported by a three-year study of 476 young adults who showed reduced tendency of becoming angry after training. Children and adults can learn skills to boost their emotional intelligence and, by doing so, develop adaptability for dealing with various negative affect, including anger. Many workbooks offer skills in emotional intelligence to promote empathy and self-awareness regarding emotions and how they impact our beliefs and behavior.Clearly, through training, Keith would experience greater emotional flexibility that could support a more peaceful commute to work. I firmly believe that learning skills in emotional intelligence should be the focus in helping individuals more constructively manage this highly challenging and complex emotion.32. What is the function of the first paragraph?A. To tell a true story.B. To make a comparison.C. To introduce the main topic.D. To present an important finding.33. Which of the following is the main point of healthy anger?A. Thinking over the annoying situation.B. Taking action to deal with the awful situation.C. Turning a blind eye to the unwelcome situation.D. Expressing feelings about the disturbing situation.34. What is the author’s attitude towards tr aining in emotional intelligence?A. Tolerant.B. Doubtful.C. Negative.D. Supportive.35. What is the suitable title of the text?A. Friends Should Enjoy Peaceful CommuteB. Drivers Need to Boost Their Emotional IntelligenceC. Emotional Intelligence Is a Buffer Against Destructive AngerD. Emotional Intelligence Has a Powerful Impact on People's Life其次节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

She says, “Some think it’s a discouraging thing, but for me personally, it is a huge responsibility.” Fran, who started to do the job at the age of 26, takes her job very seriously. “I am that annoying person at a party who will get everyone’s recycling and make sure everything goes in the right bin,” she admits. “That’s my job. That’s my mission. That’s what I need to do. It allows me to find my leadership style.”Bin loader Richard Hughes and his colleagues clock on (打卡上班) at the waste service garage in Peter borough at 6:30 and are out emptying bins within half an hour. Richard works four 12-hour days and admits the pay and the condition are not great — but there are three days off which he can spare to his partner and children. His colleague Crystal Teal has been working as a bin loader for two and a half months. “I didn’t feel my last job gave me self-worth and general happiness, so I decided to change and do something completely different,” she says. “I decided to be a binman. It doesn’t bother me that men are mainly doing it,” Crystal adds. “It can be smelly some days, but go home and have a shower, you’ll be all right.”Their biggest problem? When householders put the wrong material — like rotting food and nappies — in the recycling bins. “It makes me feel angry that they are just putting it out there. We’re doing our job to serve them. We are providing service to take their rubbish away and they can’t do their part to put the right things in,” said Richard. “Any problem has a solution — therefore I’m not afraid of a pile of waste,” Fran says. “To any normal person, this might be intimidating (吓人的). It’s a challenge. But this will be gone by Monday morning.”24.Why does Fran Hawes make others annoyed at a party?A.She still performs her task of garbage sorting.B.She hosts the party in a leadership way.C.She asks everyone to be responsible for their jobs.D.She might be smelly at parties. 25.Why did Crystal choose to be a bin loader?A.She needed a well-paid job.B.She preferred the three-day-off holiday.C.She liked to do something meaningful.D.She didn’t find loading bins dirty and smelly.26.What made Richard sometimes angry?A.People didn’t take out their rubbish.B.People threw away rubbish everywhere.C.People didn’t sort their rubbish out rightly.D.People picked out useful things from the bins.27.Which of the following can best describe Fran?A.Brave.B.Amazing.C.Anxious.D.Optimistic.As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers. There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation. The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants inpersonal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted. The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.28.Why does the author mention his childhood experience?A.To show how his character changed.B.To explain what he was like when he was young.C.To show an example of why people are shy of communication.D.To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.29.What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean?A.Careless.B.Baseless.C.Selfless.D.Meaningless. 30.What do we know about the liking gap from the text?A.It indicates what strangers really think of us.B.It begins and ends quickly among strangers.C.It disappears when strangers get to know each other.D.It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.31.Which of the following is the best title for this text?A.People Like You More than You KnowB.How to Get Along Well with StrangersC.The Way to Know What Others Think of UsD.Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits UsWhen it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes, which should come first — changing your diet or becoming more physically active?Previous studies suggested that providing people with too much information about nutrition and physical activity at once tends to be discouraging. That has led to the popularity of advising people to make changes gradually, and set smaller goals. So the scientists divided 200 inactive participants who were age 45 or older into fourgroups. One group was instructed about making diet and fitness changes at the same time, the second group was taught about diet changes first, then fitness changes four months later, the third group changed their exercise habits first and made changes in their eating habits four months later, and the final, control group was not instructed about either diet or fitness changes but about how to manage their stress. The researchers tracked the groups for a full year. Compared to the control group, the three intervention (干预) groups made healthy changes in their diet. Those who changed their fitness habits first significantly increased the amount of exercise they received daily compared to the other groups after four months. However, at the end of the year, the group that changed both diet and exercise at the same time was the only one that met the nationally recommended targets for both exercise and nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their nutrition first were unable to meet the recommended levels of fitness after a year. The researchers suspect that changes to diet are easier to make than changes to physical activity. The findings show, however, that pairing diet and exercise changes may help to overcome some of the barriers people face in adding more physical activity into their lives. If folks change diet and exercise orderly, the scientists say, they may end up placing more importance on the first set of behavior changes and feel less pressured to address the second set.32.The advice mentioned in the second paragraph seemed .A.popular B.dangerous C.scientific D.unsatisfactory 33.Which group made progress earlier than other groups in increasing the amount of daily exercise?A.The first group.B.The second group.C.The third group.D.The control group.34.The reason why those improving their nutrition first failed to meet the levels of fitnessA.they might be very lazyB.they wouldn’t like to change their behaviorC.it is much harder to change physical activityD.they might put on weight before changing their physical activity35.Which of the following does the author probably approve of?A.Pairing diet and exercise changes.B.Becoming more physically active first.C.Changing diet and exercise following a fixed order.D.Changing diet first and placing more importance on it.Simple ways to improve your written EnglishMany people think it is really difficult to improve (提高) their writing in English. Don’t worry, though. Here are some simple steps that you can take to improve your written English.● Increase your vocabulary. To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly. 36 Tip: When you learn a new word, try to learn all the forms of that word.● 37People often say that we learn to write best by reading. Reading in English is useful in many ways. It is a great way to get an idea of the different styles of writing and see how to use words properly.Tip: 38 Learning shouldn’t be boring. Read each text several times to make sure you understand how to use new words and expressions in the text.● Improve your grammar.Grammar is very important because it improves the quality (质量) of your writing.Tip:39 The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.● Just do it!The best way to improve your writing is to get a pen and paper and write. Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text. 40A.Know your readers.B.Read widely and often.C.Always check your writing twice.D.Remember, practice makes perfect!E.Choose books or articles that interest you.F.Use simpler language and shorter sentences to show your ideas.G.Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists. How to Do Well in Science ClassDoing well in science depends on developing useful study skills and learning to participate (参与) in class. 41 If you’ve got good study skills that you’ve developed in other courses, you’ll be able to use many of these to do well in science.Read the required material. When your teacher requires reading from a textbook or a website, take time to read it before you come to class. If you don’t have time to read it well, it’s a good idea to look quickly at it so that you have an idea of what it’s about. 42 Take clear and organized notes. The notes you take in class will help you know what to study between classes. 43 Instead, pay careful attention to any information your teacher stresses, which is likely to be included on tests.44 Many science classes include laboratory experiments, which are practice of techniques you’ve learned about in your textbook or lectures. Your teacher will expect you to show up ready to start your experiment. Read the instructions for the laboratory in advance of class.Reread your notes after class. If there’s anything in your notes that confuses you, or which you feel might be wrong, check with your teacher or a classmate to ensure you have the right information. 45 This tests your understanding of the material in a way that ensures you’ve really grasped (理解) the meaning.A.Be prepared for the laboratory experiment.B.Work in a group with others in class.C.Doing a good job in laboratories is also a good way to improve your performance in science.D.Recording a lecture will allow you to hear it again.E.Rereading can help you to rewrite your notes in a better way.F.Don’t try to write down everything that the teacher says.G.It also helps you be prepared to answer questions and have discussions.三、完形填空on my way to college, I had great friends and a loving family. 广东省新高考普通高中联合质量测评高三年级一轮省级联考10月份英语试题

广东省新高考普通高中联合质量测评高三年级一轮省级联考10月份英语试题After staying at home for a long time, many of us feel the itch to travel again. Before you start to pack the car, let these five signature drives inspire your plans and wanderlust.No. 1: America’s Highway: ROUTE 66Historic Route 66 is the quintessentia l American experience. “It’s not the road and it’s not the attractions - it’s the people,” says CEO of Mother Road Enterprises Jim Conkle. “It’s really a collection of cultures and languages. If you travel Route 66 and don’t immerse yourself with the peopl e, you’re missing the key to the whole experience,” he says.No. 2: Ultimate FLORIDA BEACH TripWith 1,350 miles of unbroken coastline, Florida is America’s undisputed (不容置疑的) sand-and-surf playground. The top beach in Florida - in fact, in all of America-is Siesta Key, just south of Sarasota. If you have never heard of it, perhaps that’s because Floridians try to keep this most-coveted secret to themselves. Siesta Key is one of many not-too-crowded beaches you’ll find on this drive along Florida Sun Coast.No. 3: Iowa’s GREAT RIVER ROADThe Mississippi River is our most inspiring natural landmark. The water is the star of the trip, but the scenery throughout Iowa puts on its own show. A three-hour drive north of Keokuk brings you to Le Claire, birthplace of Buffalo Bill Cody and home to the museum that honors both his contributions as an explorer of the West and the Native Americans he met.No. 4: Five in One Drive: NATIONAL PARKSSculpted by wind and water over thousands of years, the remote canyons and plateaus (高原) of southeastern Utah were among the last parts of the American West to be seen by drivers from the East. Today, that rugged (多岩石的) landscape is home to some of the most popular national parks in the country. Collectively known as the Mighty Five, they offer dramatic desert landscapes, soaring arches, deep slot canyons, and reach-for-the-sky rocky spires.No. 5: History & Foliage: NEW ENGLANDNew England vacationers essentially want two things: a little bit of history and a lot of leaves. You’ll find them both on Massachusetts’s Mohawk Trail, one of the nation’s first designated scenic highways. The Mohawk people once used this byway across the Berkshire Hills as a trading route, and armies from Colonial Boston traveled it to defend the western frontier.1. Which drive best suits people who enjoy water sports?A.America’s Highway: ROUTE 66.B.Ultimate FLORIDA BEACH Trip.C.Five in One Drive: NATIONAL PARKS. D.History & Foliage: NEW ENGLAND. 2. What does “Mighty Five” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.The homes in the American West. B.The sculptures in the American West.C.The highways in southeastern Utah. D.The national parks in southeastern Utah.3. What can we infer from the text?A.Involving yourself with the people will capture the essence of traveling Route 66.B.If you’ve never heard of Siesta Key, that’s because Floridians keep it a secret.C.A three-hour drive south of Keokuk leads you to the birthplace of Buffalo Bill Cody.D.Armies from Colonial Boston traveled across the Berkshire Hills to protect the western frontier.Peggy, a nine-year-old border collie (柯利牧羊犬), was signed over to the RSPCA (皇家防止虐待动物协会) after her handler could no longer communicate with her. He thought she could no longer work because she was not able to hear whistles or voice commands. However, after being handed to the RSPCA, Peggy was taken in by Chloe Shorten, an animal welfare manager from the organization’s mid-Norfolk and north Suffolk branch.Shorten, 28, and her husband Jason, 34, a shepherd, taught Peggy to understand hand signals and body language. The couple trained Peggy with the help of a sheepdog trainer and their two other working dogs, Sid and Nora.Shorten said, “We completely fell in love with Peggy almost immediately, and it soon became clear that she wouldn’t be going anywhere. We knew Peggy wanted to be working, so we started the long process of teaching her how to herd and work with a shepherd without relying on voice commands.”The couple began by training Peggy to look at them to receive hand signals. “We used repetitive and positive reinforcement (加强) and instead of pairing a verbal command with an action we’d use a hand gesture. She reads our hand signals and body language as a way of telling what we’re asking for. For example, thumbs up means ‘good girl’. A flat, outstretched palm means ‘stop’.”Shorten and her husband point in a certain direction to indicate where they want Peggy to go and pat their knees to summon her back to them. To ask her to slow down, Shorten said she does a waving gesture.Peggy is not working full-ti me but enjoys helping out in the fields. “It can be difficult with a deaf dog, because you have to wave at her to get her attention, and sometimes she doesn’t realize straight away,” she said. “But she’s such a happy little dog. She’s no spring chicken, and she is generally retired, but she loves going out to work with us and running around in the fields.”4. What do we learn about Peggy from the passage?A.Peggy was transferred from her former owner to RSPCA for her old age.B.Peggy was trained without the aid of other dogs.C.Peggy was adopted by the couple shortly after the couple met her.D.Peggy is full of energy and now is working all day long.5. How did the couple train Peggy to understand their hand signals and body language?A.By applying repeated and positive reinforcement.B.By paring a verbal command with an action.C.By patting their knees.D.By doing a waving gesture.6. What is the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 7?A.not deaf B.not young C.not energetic D.not positive7. What is the main idea of the passage?A.Sign language is of importance to training dogs to herd.B.How RSPCA rescues the abandoned dogs and sends them to some families.C.How Shorten and Jason teach deaf dogs to herd and work with a shepherd.D.An elderly deaf sheepdog is now working again after learning sign language.Last summer, the missing white-letter hairstreak butterfly was spotted in Scotland for the first time in 133 years. Conservationists wondered if the creature had established a breeding colony in the country. As Russell Jackson reports for the Scotsman, volunteer naturalists recently found a cluster of tiny white-letter hairstreak eggs on an elm tree in Lennel, a small village near the country of Berwick-shire.Volunteers with the UK’s But terfly Conservation have been carefully tracking white-letter hair-streak migrations for more than ten years. The butterfly is native to the UK and was once widespread in England and Wales. But white -letter hairstreak numbers have declined drastically in recent decades, largely due to an outbreak of Dutch elm disease, and illness that took hold in the 1960s. The disease has killed millions of British elm trees, which is the food source for white-letter hairstreak caterpillars (蝴蝶或蛾的幼虫).Recently, there have been signs that the butterfly’s populations are recovering. The Butterfly Conservation team has observed the white-letter hairstreak gradually spreading northwards, possibly due to warming climates. But the white-letter hairstreak is still a very rare sight in Scotland, and the volunteers who found the cluster of eggs — Ken Haydock and Jill Mills — were thrilled by the discovery.“It was a lovely sunny morning and we were searching the elm trees by the River Tweed at Lennel when Jill called me over,” Haydock says in a Butterfly Conservation statement, “I could see by the look on her face that she had found something. We were both smiling with disbelief and delight when we realized what Jill had found and within seconds I was fumbling in my pack for the camera —my hands were shaking!”That Haydock and Mills managed to spot the eggs is quite remarkable; according to Vittoria Traverso of Atlas Obscura, white-letter hairstreak eggs are smaller than a grain of salt. The volunteers were also excited to discover an old, hatched eggshell amid the cluster of new eggs. According to the Butterfly Conservation, this suggests that the white-letter hairstreak could have been breeding in the area since at least 2016.Paul Kirkland, the director of the Butterfly Conserva tion’ s Scotland chapter, says in the statement that conservationists will “need to have a few more years of confirmed sightings” before they can classify the white-letter hairstreak as a resident species of Scotland. “If this happens, it would take the to tal number of butterflies found in Scotland to 34,” he says, “which really would be something to celebrate.”8. What mainly accounted for the sharp decrease of the special butterfly species?A.An outbreak of the butterfly disease. B.A great loss due to its mass migration.C.The mass death of British elm trees. D.The consequence of global warming.9. What was said about the white-letter hairstreak butterfly?A.It has been native to the US and spread to England.B.Its population is decreasing due to global warming.C.Signs have shown that its number is rising again now.D.People can see them every now and then in Scotland.10. What do we know about the two volunteer naturalists?A.It was on a rainy day that they made the discovery.B.Ken looked puzzled the moment Jill called him over.C.Jill made the discovery first and took a photo of it.D.They felt it unbelievable to make their discovery.11. Why does Paul Kirkland think something is worth celebrating?A.Volunteers can find more eggs of the special butterfly in the future.B.The total number of butterfly species found in the UK adds up to 34.C.Conservationists will have more years of confirmed sightings.D.The number of butterfly species found in Scotland increases again. The cold, wet weather of winter often puts out any wildfires that are still burning, but not in the far North areas, such as Alaska, Canada, and other parts of North America. Some forest fires just don’t die in these places. Think of the fires as “zombies” (僵尸): Scientists do. When summers are warmer than normal, some fires can hide through the winter. They burn dead plant matter and soils under snow. In May 2021, scientists reported their work to a scientific journal. The scientists saw that zombie fires are rare but they could become more common as the world warms, the study warns. “Some years, new fires were starting very close to the previous year’s fire,” explains Rebecca Scholten. She studies Earth and environmental sciences at Vrije University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The new fires made scientists wonder how often fires might survive the winter. The scientists started by combing through firefighter reports. Then they compared these with satelliteimages of Alaska and northern Canada. The scientists looked for fires that began close to fires from the year before. They also focused on blazes starting before the middle of summer. Random lightning or human actions spark most fires in the area, Scholten says. But those fires happen later in the year.Zombie fires accounted for less than 1 percent of the total area burned by fires from 2002 to 2018. But it changed from year to year. Take 2008, for example. A zombie fire burned Alaska that year. It caused almost one-third of fire damage that year. One clear pattern emerged: Zombie fires were more likely to happen after very warm summers. High temperatures may allow fires to reach more deeply into the soil. Such deep burns are more likely to survive to spring. The zombie fire threat could grow. The climate is warming. Forests in the far North already are warming faster. “We’re seeing more hot summers and more large fires and intense burning,” Scholten says. Plus, zombie fires could cause more issues. The fires release huge amounts of greenhouse gases. These trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround the Earth. Scholten’s research could help fire management. Firefighters would know to check for them after warm summers.12. What may lead to zombie fires according to the passage?A.wet weather B.hotter summersC.low temperatures D.cold winters13. What can we learn about zombie fires from Paragraph 2?A.Where flames broke out provided the clue.B.Changing climate plays a role in the zombie fire threat.C.Zombie fires are less likely to happen after very warm summers.D.It is of little use comparing firefighter reports with satellite images.14. What conclusion will be possibly made based on the last paragraph?A.It is important to understand zombie fires.B.Zombie fires are likely to be under control soon.C.Firefighters cannot do much to stop the zombie fires.D.We still have much to learn about the warming climate.15. Which of the following could be the suitable title of the passage?A.“Zombie“ wildfires do great damage to landB.“Zombie” wildfires release greenhouse gasesC.“Zombie“ wildfires sparked by human actionsD.“Zombie” wildfires reappear after wintering undergroundYou find yourself stuck in traffic when a hasty driver cuts you off. Before you know it, your blood pressure has spiked and you impulsively yell anger out of the window. This kind of scene happens to everyone at some point. Frequent bursts that increase quickly, though, may be a sign that you’re dealing with a short temper. 16Practice mindfulness meditation. 17 Close your eyes and notice the physical sensation of anger travel through your body, whether it’s through your rapid heart rate or your clenched (紧张的) jaw. Inhale deeply and allow all thoughts of anger to release as you exhale. Repeat 2 to 3 times per day or whenever you start to feel anger arise.18 Come up with some concrete strategies for dealing with situations that you know will trigger your temper. If you know your daily commute tends to set you off, for example, set aside some time to focus on alternative options. Waking up earlier to catch an emptier train or carpooling (拼车) with a coworker might make all the difference.Get physical. When you start to feel your blood boil, work it off with an exercise session. Go out fora quick ran, play a sport that gets your heart pumping, or swim a few laps in the neighborhood pool.19Use a daily mood chart. Track episodes of anger and irritability (易怒) by keeping a daily record of your moods. 20 To get an extra clear picture of your moods, try to also take notes of your intake of caffeine or other substances, quality of sleep, stressful situations or conversations, and any underlying emotions like fear or disappointment.Debra Ferrell got the standard well wishes on Facebook on her 53rd birthday, but she got some__________ messages too. Growing up in Karnataka, she began accompanying her father into the wild at just two years old. But in her hometown, kids grew up with a negative perspective on wildlife. Elephants destroyed crops and sometimes people were badly injured or killed. Karanth discovered kids wouldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place to witness extraordinary animals. In 2017, a conversation with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset towards education. Within half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first version of “Wild Shaale” on their hands. A program designed for students who come into frequent contact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims to develop a genuine understanding of wildlife and wild spaces and move beyond wildlife toleranceto concepts of conservation and environmental issues. The conservation education program fills a gap in environmental learning. While it is fortunate that a basic environmental education is supported by local government, Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality of the curriculum and whether it’s delivered effectively and consistently. “You have to visualize what these schools look like. They may not have electricity — forget having computers, internet, iPads, or anything.”Encouraging the students to find commonalities between themselves and the animals is the first step to changing perceptions and hopefully, behaviors. “It comes down to the same things: we need food; we need water; we need space. Then they start to understand why situations of conflict arise,” Karanth says. “But then how do you convince them not to get angry, not to act in a way that leads to harm? That’s something we’re trying to work on. It’s not easy.”4.What problem might Karanth’s hometown have faced?A.Human-wildlife conflict.B.Loss of wildlife habitats.C.Overpopulation of elephants.D.Disregard for wildlife balance.5.Why did Karanth launch the program Wild Shaale?A.To help students identify animals.B.To fill a gap in local education.C.To change how students perceive wildlife.D.To publicize wildlife diversity.6.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.The support to the plan.B.The barrier to the program.C.The curriculum arrangement.D.The schools’conditions.7.What is Karanth trying to achieve in the program?A.A shift in humans’ attitudes and behavior.B.A breakthrough in environmental studies.C.Appropriate ways to end local conflicts.D.Approaches to changing animals’ behavior.Olympic athletes pour everything into training for the Games, routinely pushing their physical and mental bounds to the limit—and beyond—for a shot at a gold medal. Yet they are often accompanied by an emotional comedown.Emotions are heightened by the nature of the event itself. The Olympics is a massive cultural event—a combination of global public attention, financial investment and media coverage. New international celebrities are created, and some competitors’ reputations are ruined duringvarious accusations. Athletes are under the pressure of representing their country and winning medals in front of worldwide audience. “But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,” says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, “Now what?”A 2023 paper explained the identity crises athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater “myopic” focus are more at risk of the “blues”. “It is common for top competitors to have this very high athletic identity,” says Howells. “They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative consequences in the future.”Efforts to minimize this mindset have helped some athletes to open up more about their mental health. Experts advise Olympians to start conversations about mental health support well before the Games begin. However, developmental psychology offers a different perspective.A study published in Developmental Psychology explores how children react to ideas that go against what they usually think and if they check these ideas against what they expect. This way of checking, known as the“ empirical stance,” is evident by the time children reach elementary school. The study involved nearly 200 children aged 3 to 8 from Chinese schools. Each child was presented with five differently-sized objects made from painted Russian dolls. The children naturally assumed that the smallest doll was the lightest and the largest the heaviest. When asked to identify the heaviest object, most children chose the largest one. An adult then either agreed with the children’s choice or made a claim that the smallest doll was the heaviest. The researchers observed whether the children would change their minds or test the adult’s claim by comparing the weights of the dolls.Initially, children seemed to trust the adult’s word, with only a small percentage insisting on their original belief. However, when given the opportunity to explore the dolls, elementary school children who had received the surprising claim systematically tested it by comparing the smallest and largest dolls. This exploration allowed them to generate evidence that could contradict the adult’s claim. These findings suggest that while children are willing to trust an adult’s surprising claims, their acceptance is temporary. By elementary school, they systematically test such claims by seeking new evidence, which they then use to update their beliefs. The study’s implications extend beyond childhood. Most adults accept complex concepts, such as the existence of electrons, based on the testimony(证词)of others rather than personal experience. So while children may learn about the magic of Santa Claus from adults, adults might similarly have something to learn from elementary school children: most of us would do well toadopt an empirical stance more often than we currently do.12.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The methodology of the study.B.The conclusion of the study.C.The significance of the study.D.The theoretical basis of the study. 13.Which child’s response matches the empirical stance?A.Taylor believes what the teacher says no matter what.B.Jordan thinks the earth is flat because his father says so.C.Emma assumes the watermelon is sweet and then tastes it.D.Maya suspects there are monsters living in trees as the story says.14.What lesson could adults learn from children?A.Rejecting complex concepts.B.Never trusting anyone.C.Learning from their own experience.D.Counting on others’ testimony.15.What is the main purpose of the text?A.To highlight the importance of adult’s role in children’s education and growth.B.To advocate for a more empirical approach to belief formation across all ages.C.To clarify a misunderstanding about elementary school students’ learning ability.D.To persuade adults to help children rid themselves of wrong ideas about the world.Shame has been called our “most dreaded emotional experience.” We know the feeling only too well: Our pulse quickens. 16 The feeling is so bad that we want to escape at all costs. Here are some things you need to know about shame and some tips for how to feel less of it.Shame and guilt are different emotions. You feel guilty when you think you’ve done something wrong, but you feel shame when you believe that you are wrong. While guilt arises when you have made a mistake and can fix it, shame develops when you see yourself as the mistake. 17Shame has warning signs. There are many signs that you are experiencing shame. 18 And when someone brings up something you feel ashamed about, you may look down and avoid eye contact and talk in a soft voice.19Shame can lead to high blood pressure, stomach problems, insomnia, alcohol or drugs addiction, eating disorders. One study determined that external shame — the fear that others are judging us negatively — is associated with anorexia, while internal shame — our negative self-evaluation self-generated criticism — is associated with bulimia. There is a cure for shame. When you have a caring person to share your shameful and otherwise painful stories with, you will be able to fully express yourself and finally release the old, stored, toxic feelings that have been weighing you down. 20 At the same time, you will stop seeing yourself as bad or wrong. The change you will feel is profound.A.Our faces flush.B.Our eyes light up.C.Shame can harm your physical health.D.Sham e may make it harder for you to stay focused.E.Free of those, you can shift your beliefs about yourself.F.The critic inside your head tells you that you are a bad, worthless person.G.You avoid being the center of attention and wish you could shrink into the walls.二、完形填空In June of 2019, I was staying at a fitness camp in Thailand. But as Zoe Schlanger’s “breathtaking” book The Light Eaters makes clear, plants do more than just provide the oxygen-rich atmosphere and turn light and air into usable energy; their significance is more than that. Plants appear to sense touch, communicate, remember, and make decisions, and her survey of the current science “will transform how you see not only plants but the nature of all life.”“In places, Schlanger’s assumptions are likely to displease researchers,” said Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery in Nature. Botanists (植物学家) are debating whether to credit intelligence to plants, but that doesn’t mean the field is in chaos. Schlanger sometimes rushes to generalize from a single researcher’s work, but The Light Eaters “overflows with her enthusiasm,” and as Schlanger visits researchers and shares their discoveries, she provides “a rare and welcome insight into the humanity and devotion of botanists.” Among her discoveries, some tomato plants release a distasteful chemical when caterpillars (毛毛虫) feed on them. Similarly, corn plants use caterpillar saliva (唾液) to attract bees that hunt caterpillars.Laura Miller, in her Slate review, appreciates Schlanger’s The Light Eaters for showing the plant kingdom’s wonders. But she finds the book’s focus on proving plant intelligence to be a minor imperfection. Schlanger seems to believe that humans need reasons to identify with plants to respect them, an opinion Miller challenges. She assumes that it’s the great differences between plants and humans, like the calming strangeness of nature, that we find appealing. Miller puts forward that plants might be driven by forces beyond our comprehension, making them exciting to study not for their intelligence, but for their secrets.4.What makes Schlanger’s work so amazing?A.Its clear explanation.B.Its revolutionary view.C.Its widespread survey.D.Its scientific foundation.5.What is Beronda’s attitude towards The Light Eaters?A.Favorable.B.Dismissive.C.Doubtful.D.Unclear.6.What does Laura suggest we do?A.Embrace plant diversity.B.Appreciate plant mystery.C.Label plants as intelligent.D.Build reactions with plants.7.What is the purpose of the text?A.To praise a botanist.B.To remember a writer.C.To recommend a book.D.To introduce a phenomenon. The rock group Counting Crows were onto something when they chose their band name. Crows (乌鸦) can indeed count, according to research published this week in Science. The results show that crows have counting capacities near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tübingen in Germany. “We think this is the first time this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds.Crows do not appear to be capable of symbolic counting, where numbers serve as an exact representation. Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (发声) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says. For example, a baby who is asked how many apples are on a tree may answer, “One, one, one”. The baby produces the number of speech sounds which agree with that of the apples, rather than just saying, “Three.”In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-colored numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward. After receiving about 180 training sessions, all of the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations associated with the hints — a “pretty cool” finding, Liao says. She suspects, too, that the crows could have mastered numbers higher than four if they were given the opportunity.Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is “excellent” even if the findings are “not unexpected” given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence.8.What is the new research about?A.Crows’ ability to count.B.Crows’ skill of solving problems.C.A comparison between crows and babies.D.An investigation into a famous rock group.9.Why does the author mention a baby counting apples in paragraph 3?A.To clarify how crows count.B.To explain how babies think.C.To illustrae the wisdom of crows.D.To display baby learning progress.10.How did the crows get the worm rewards?A.By counting objects on the screen.B.By picking colors from the touch screen.C.By choosing between sounds and images.D.By matching sounds to visual and audio hints.11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The research is poorly recognized.B.The results fit with previous findings.C.The study needs further confirmation.D.The biopsychologist is critical of the study.A new study has found that a person’s face tends to evolve to suit their name. The researchers sought to determine how parents choose baby names. Do they pick a name that fits the baby’s appearance? Or does the person’s face change over time to match the name they were given? In the study, children and adults were asked to match faces to names. The findings revealed that both the children and the adults correctly matched adult faces to their corresponding names, significantly above the chance level. However, when it came to children’s faces and names, the participants were unable to make accurate associations. In another part of the study, a machine learning system was fed a large database of human face images. The computer recognized patterns in the faces of adults and found that those with the same name had more similar facial features. These faces were more alike than those of adults with different names. However, no significant similarity was found among children with the same name compared to those with different names. The researchers concluded that the similarity between a person’s face and their name results from a self-fulfilling(自我应验的)prediction. The facial appearance changes over a long period of time to align with social stereotypes(刻板印象)associated with the name. Stereotypes can develop in various ways, such as when a name is linked to a celebrity or a cultural figure. For example, individuals named “Rose” might be regarded as more attractive or gentle, leading them to adopt softer facial expressions over time.Dr. Yonat Zwebner from Reichman University says, “Our research highlights the broader importance of this surprising effect-the intense influence of social expectations. We have demonstrated that social constructs, or structuring, do exist-something that until now has been almost impossible to test experimentally.“Social structuring is so strong that it can affect a person’s appearance. These findings may imply the extent to which other personal factors that are even more significant than names, such as gender or cultural background, may shape who people grow up to be.” Dr. Yonat added. 12.What did the researchers focus on?A.A name-appearance link.B.Reasons for face changes.C.A name-selection process.D.Benefits of name matching.13.What did the machine learning system suggest?A.Grown-ups generally look alike.B.Adults’ names tend to lack diversity.C.Names may affect certain face features over time.D.Machine testing is more reliable than human testing.14.What does the underlined phrase “align with” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Depart from.B.Depend on.C.Result in.D.Correspond to. 15.What does Dr. Yonat’s comment stress?A.The importance of facial appearance.B.The impact of social factors on identity.C.The concern of choosing proper names.D.The difficulty of testing social structuring. How to Reconnect with Nature Through WritingWhether you’re in the wilderness or a city park, being present with other beings can be deeply rewarding. The wild is calling, and writing offers a powerful tool for re-connection. Through keen observation and warm language, we can develop a deeper connection with our environment. 16The first step is raising a keen awareness of your surroundings. By sharpening your senses, you’ll capture the essence of a plant or place in vivid detail. Imagine describing a forest after a summer rain: What can you see? Maybe sunlight passing through the leaves? 17 Sensory details create an experience that brings both you and the reader into the heart of the forest.Limiting your focus to one single being. This limitation creates a deeper connection between you and your fellow creature, whether a sunflower pushing through a crack (裂缝) in the sidewalk, or a strange-looking mushroom. 18 By exploring this nature-being, you gain a richer understanding and appreciation for its existence.19 It can also be about experiencing the natural world from a different angle. Try writing a letter to your wild friend: Choose a plant, animal, or natural element. Imagine how the world might appear through the eyes and ears of them. They also have stories to tell.Nature writing is a journey of continuous discovery. 20 Keep writing, keep exploring your local environment, and keep rewilding yourself. Share your experiences and remember, even the smallest backyard can be a place for wonder and inspiration.A.Or do you smell the natural smell of wet soil in the air?B.Nature writing isn’t just about humans observing nature.C.How does a plant sense the surroundings compared to you?D.Let’s explore some tips to set off on your wild writing journey.E.Use all your senses to capture the unique details of one creature.F.The following are some techniques to unlock your creative potential.G.The practice of it can awaken a new appreciation for the world around you.二、完形填空I will always cherish the memories of my trip to Goa, especially that unforgettable night on the train.I went on this trip with my school friends to 21 our minds and escape from our 9-to-5 lives. 广东省广东实验中学2017届高三10月月考英语试卷第Ⅰ卷(满分70分)第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节篇章阅读(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该题涂黑.AI am Peter Hades, a volunteer stem cell courier. Since March 2012, I’ve done 89 trips —of those, 51 have been abroad, I have 42 hours to carry stem cells(干细胞)in my little box because I’ve got two ice packs and that’s how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor to the time they can be implanted in the patient, we’ve got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.I had one trip last year where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check-in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: “W ell, I’m really sorry, I’ve got some bad news for you —there are no flights from Washington.” So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: “In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient —please, please, you’ve got to get me back to the United Kingdom.” She just dropped everything. She arranged for a flight on a small plane to be held for me, re-routed(改道)me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled. For this courier job, you’re consciously aware that in that box you’ve got something that is potentially going to save somebody’s life.1.Which of the following can replace the un derlined word “courier” in Paragraph 1? ________A.providerB.collectorC.delivery manD.medical doctor2.Why does Peter have to complete his trip within 42 hours? ________A.The ice won’t last any longer.B.The donor can only wait for that long.C.The operation needs that much time.D.He cannot stay away from his job too long.3.Which fight did the woman put Peter on first? ________A.To Newark.B.To London.C.To Providence.D.To Washington.BA survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport.According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits. The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX)spoke to around 1 500 people, aged 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia and Brazil. The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35 000 feet.Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers. The international flyers did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment. “The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements”said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director. “At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey.” he added.4.What can you probably see in the flight according to the passage? ________A.Brazilians choose to drink.B.Americans do in-flight shopping.C.Germans chat to kill the time.D.The Chinese switch off the seat-belt sign.5.When on board the plane, ________.A.passengers from one nation have little in commonB.most passengers like to read in-flight magazinesC.more than half of the passengers don’t enjoy plane foodD.most people tend to use in-flight time to have a good sleep6.What can we learn from the last paragraph? ________A.Flyers care little about entertainment.B.Flyers are not satisfied with the improvements.C.Flyers are expecting better flight experiences.D.Flyers have more and more demands from airlines.7.What’s the pu rpose of the passage? ________A.To entertain readers with interesting stories.B.To encourage people to behave well in public.C.To criticize impolite behaviors on the plane.D.To inform readers of the results of a survey.CNeed for closure is a psycholo gical term that describes a person’s desire for a firm answer to a question. Our need for closure is our natural preference for definite answers over confusion and uncertainty. Every person has their own baseline level of need for closure. It likely evolved via natural selection. What I find really fascinating is how our need for closure is affected by the situation we’re in. Our need for closure rises when we have to act rather than just observe, and it matters much more when we’re rushed, or bored, or tired. Any stress can make our discomfort with uncertainty increase, and a high need for closure negatively influences some of our most important decisions: who we decide to trust, whether we admit we’re wrong and even how creative we are.In hiring, for instance, a high need for closure leads people to put far too much weight on their first impression. It’s called the Urgency Effect. In one experiment, psychologists tried to l ower people’s need for closure by telling them, right before participants are about to make various judgments of a job candidate, that they’ll be responsible in some way for them, or that their judgments have serious consequences. In making any big decision, it’s not enough just to know that we should take our time.We all know that impor tant decisions shouldn’t be rushed. The problem is that we don’t keep that advice in mind when it matters. So, one of the best solutions is to formalize the reminders. Before making important decisions, write down not just advantages and disadvantages but what the consequences could be. Also, think about how much pressure you’re under. If your need for closure is particularly high that day, it’s even more important to think twice.8.How does “need for closure” probably come into being? ________A.By accident.B.By nature.C.By acquiring.D.By imitating.9.It can be inferred that a high need for closure ________.A.brings about more stressB.leads to not so good decisionsC.causes discomfort and uncertaintyD.promotes one’s creativity10.In the experiment the psychologists reduced participants’ need for closure by telling them to ________.A.value their first impressionB.be responsible for their bossC.be cautious about their judgmentsD.pay little attention to the consequences11.What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? ________A.More helpful solutions to high need for closure.B.Some serious consequences of making decisions.C.Other approaches to making important decisions.D.Another strategy to escape the pressures of modern life.DBad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发)one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”12.What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to? ________A.Private e-mails.B.Research papers.C.News reports.D.Daily conversations.13.What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer? ________A.They’re socially inactive.B.They’re good at telling stories.C.They’re careful with their words.D.They’re inconsiderate of others.14.Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research? ________A.Science articles.B.Sports news.C.Personal accounts.D.Financial reviews.15.What can be a suitable title for the text? ________A.Sad Stories Travel Far and WideB.Online News Attracts More PeopleC.Reading Habits Change with the TimesD.Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks第二节短文选句(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项.A garde n that’s just right for youHave you ever visited a garden that seemed just right for you, where the atmosphere of the garden appeared to total more than the sum of its parts? 16 .
