A constant guest is never welcome.【答案】【小题1】C 【小题2】B 【小题3】A【解析】21.C.根据文中最后一部分中的信息"In some Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia, never touch anyone's head or pass anything from above the head." BRaghu Makwana lost his legs, but his kindness is ever-present.One of his many kindness efforts is the Tulsi project.Whenever he learns of a family with some conflicts or even violent abuse,Raghu courageously walks in to spread good cheer and gifts them a Tulsi plant. Most of these are complete strangers.Sometimes he'll recite a prayer, sometimes he'll talk about wise saints(圣人),sometimes he'll share stories.Hearing hopeful messages from a young man without legs is quite transformative! When he leaves the holy Tulsi plant, people accept it as a blessing;as they care for the plant, and are reminded of its presence every day, they sometimes grow in empathy(移情作用).To date,he has given out more than 500of these plants, one at a time.Let alone folks in the slums(贫民窟),Raghu even attracts famous people.Once,a philanthropist(慈善家)gave a talk to the slum kids and described the experience of flying in a plane.A few weeks later,it so turned out that Spice Jet Airlines donated an entire plane for that whole group of slum children and young adults, including Raghu,to"fly in the air'.Miss India herself received them at the airport, and personally chatted with Raghu about life in the slums,as they were all gifted a royal tour of a big city.Even more recently, when Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, the former president of India, was giving a talk,he was deeply inspired by Rashu. As a Lok Mitra fellow for our Moved By Love team,Raghu continues to share his sympathy in creative ways.To start 20ll,Raghu gave birth to one of his dreams. When he lived out on the streets,he often felt deeply moved by others on the streets who had even less than him.He put together a team of five everyday folks,(one of whom is blind!),who would make small sacrifices in their own lives to support delivery of hand--cooked meals for some of the absolutely neglected people on the streets. They appropriately named it"Food of Sacrifice".4.Which of the following is NOT included in the Tulsi project?______A. Solving conflicts between people.B. Giving people food.C. Giving people plants as gifts.D. Telling stories to people.5.What is the main idea of Paragraph Two?______A. Raghu's influence on people.B. This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness.Happiness is the way.So treasure every moment that you have. And remember that time waits for no one.So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school;until you get married, until you get divorced;until you have kids;until you retire;until you get a new car or home;until spring;until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy…Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So,work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one's watching.12.In the third paragraph, the author uses Alfred Souza's quote in order to ______ .A. support his viewpointB. introduce one more topicC. enrich the content of the articleD. compare their different views on happiness13.The underlined word"this"in the second paragraph probably refers to" ______ ".A. Life will be better after we get married, have a baby and another.B. Our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together.C. When we retire,we are able to go on a nice holidayD. Our life is always filled with challenges.14.The best title of the text might be ______ .A. Owning the present is owning the futureB. Pursuing Happiness is Nature of Us HumansC. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.D. How to Possess Real Happiness15.The main idea of the second paragraph is that ______ .ll be much more productive andcreative after agoA. One who has integrity is bound by and follows moral and ethical (道德上的) standards even when making life's hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical standards? We feel disappointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse (缺失) of integrity also affects our relationships with others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus integrity must be one of our most important goals.Risky BusinessWe are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision, making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by understanding why we acted as we did and then exploring ways to avoid similar problems in the future.Making ethical decisions is a critical part of avoiding future problems. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we can't see the risks we're taking, we can't make responsible choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesn't know the rules a about plagiarism (剽窃) may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit or one who fails to keep careful research notes may unintentionally fail to quote and cite sources as required. But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct, Ignorance is not a defense."But Everybody Does It"Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts but manage to fool themselves about the risks they're taking by using excuses: "Everyone else does it." "I'm not hurting anyone", or "I really need this grade." Excuses can get very elaborate: "I know I'm look at another's exam, even though I'm supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that's not cheating because I’m just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions and avoid excuses, if we fool ourselves into believing we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choice we're making - and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public and anyone could be watching over yore shoulder. If you'd rather hide your actions, that's an indication that you're taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usually focus on immolate benefits and simply haven't considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting caught are serious and may include a "O" on a test or assignment, an "F" in the class, suspension (暂令停学) or dismissal from school and a ruined reputation. In fact, when you break a role or law, you lose control over your life and give others the power to impose punishment that you have no control over. This is an extremely vulnerable (脆弱的) position. There may be some matters of life and death or highest principle, which might justify such a risk, but there aren't many things that fall in this category.Getting Away with it - Or NotThose who don't get caught pay an even higher price. A cheater doesn't learn from the test, which deprives (剥夺) him her of an education. Cheating undermines confidence and independence: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that without dishonesty, he/she would have failed. Cheating destroys self-respect and integrity, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty and afraid of getting caught.Worst of all, a cheater who doesn't get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences.Cheating Hurts Other, TooCheaters often feel invisible, as if their actions "don't count" and don't really hurt anyone. But individual choices have an intense cumulative (累积的) effect. Cheating can spread like a disease. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college students cheat. If a class is graded on a curve, cheating hurts others' grades. Even if there is no curve, cheating "poisons" the classroom, and others may feel pressured to join in. ("If I don't cheat I can't compete with those who do") Cheating also has a destructive impact on teachers. The real reward of goof teaching is seeing students learn. But a cheater says. "I'm not interested in what you're trying to teach, all I care about is stealing a grade, regardless of the effect on others." The end result is a destructive attack on the quality of your education. Finally, cheating can hurt the reputation of the university and harm those who worked hard for their degree. Why Integrity MartenIf cheating becomes the norm, then we are in big trouble. We must rely on the honesty and good faith of others, if not, we couldn't put money in the bank, buy food, clothing, or medicine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dentist--the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is caused when individuals forget or ignore the effect their dishonesty can have. The savings and loan scandal, the stock market and junk bond swindles, and, of course, Watergate, have undermined the faith of many Americans in the integrity of political and economic leaders and society as a whole. Such incidents take a tremendous toll on our nation's economy and our individual well-being. For example, but for the savings and loan debacle, there might be funds available to reduce the national debt and pay for education. In sum, we all have a common stake in our school, our community, and our society. Our actions do matter. It is essential that we act with integrity in order to build the kind of world in which we want to live.29. Why does British food have a reputation for being so bad? Because it is bad! Those are not the most encouraging words to hear just before eating lunch at one of Hong Kong's smartest British restaurants, Alfie's by KEE, but head chef Neil Tomes has more to say."The past 15 years or so have been a noticeable period of improvement for food in England," the English chef says, citing the trend in British cuisine for better ingredients, preparation and cooking methods, and more appealing presentation. Chefs such as Delia Smith, Nigel Slater, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay made the public realise that cooking - and eating - didn't have to be a boring thing. And now, most of the British public is familiar even with the extremes of Heston BlumenthaPs molecular gastronomy, a form of cooking that employs scientific methods to create the perfect dish."It's no longer the case that the common man in England is embarrassed to show he knows about food," Tomes says. There was plenty of room for improvement. The problems with the nation's cuisine can be traced back to the Second World War. Before the War, much of Britain's food was imported and when German U-boats began attacking ships bringing food to the country, Britain went on rations (配给)."As rationing came to an end in the 1950s, technology picked up and was used to mass-produce food," Tomes says. "And by then people were just happy to have a decent quantity of food in their kitchens."They weren't looking for cured meats, organic produce or beautiful presentation; they were looking for whatever they could get their hands on, and this prioritisation of quantity over quality prevailed for decades, meaning a generation was brought up with food that couldn't compete with neighbouring France, Italy, Belgium or Spain. Before star chefs such as Oliver began making cooking fashionable, it was hard to find a restaurant in London that was open after 9pm. But in recent years the capital's culinary (烹饪的) scene has developed to the point that it is now confident of its ability to please the tastes of any international visitor. With the opening of Alfie's in April, and others such as The Pawn, two years ago, modern British food has made its way to Hong Kong. "With British food, I think that Hong Kong restaurants are keeping up," says David Tamlyn, the Welsh executive chef at The Pawn in Wan Chai. "Hong Kong diners are extremely responsive to new ideas or presentations, which is good news for new dishes."Chefs agree that diners in Hong Kong are embracing the modern British trend. Some restaurants are modifying the recipes (菜谱) of British dishes to breathe new life into the classics, while others are using better quality ingredients but remaining true to British traditions and tastes.Tamlyn is in the second camp. "We select our food very particularly. We use US beef, New Zealand lamb and for our custards (牛奶蛋糊)we use Bird's Custard Powder," Tamlyn says. "Some restaurants go for custard made fresh with eggs, sugar and cream, but British custard is different, and we stay true to that."Matthew Hill, senior manager at the two-year-old SoHo restaurant Yorkshire Pudding, also uses better ingredients as a means of improving dishes. "There are a lot of existing perceptions about British food and so we can't alter these too much. We're a traditional British restaurant so there are some staples (主菜) that will remain essentially unchanged."These traditional dishes include fish and chips, steak and kidney pie and large pieces of roasted meats. At Alfie's, the newest of the British restaurants in town and perhaps the most gentlemen's club-like in design, Neil Tomes explains his passion for provenance (原产地)."Britain has started to become really proud of the food it's producing. It has excellent organic farms, beautifully crafted cheeses, high-quality meats." However, the British don't have a history of exporting their foodstuffs, which makes it difficult for restaurants in Hong Kong to source authentic ingredients."We can get a lot of our ingredients once a week from the UK," Tamlyn explains. "But there is also pressure to buy local and save on food miles, which means we take our vegetables from the local markets, and there are a lot that work well with British staples."The Phoenix, in Mid-Levels, offers the widest interpretation of "British cuisine", while still trying to maintain its soul. The gastro-pub has existed in various locations in Hong Kong since 2002. Singaporean head chef Tommy Teh Kum Chai offers daily specials on a blackboard, rather than sticking to a menu. This enables him to reinterpret British cuisine depending on what is available in the local markets."We use a lot of ingredients that people wouldn't perhaps associate as British, but are presented in a British way. Bell peppers stuffed with couscous, alongside ratatouille, is a very popular dish."Although the ingredients may not strike diners as being traditional, they can be found in dishes across Britain.Even the traditional chefs are aware of the need to adapt to local tastes and customs, while maintaining the Britishness of their cuisine. At Yorkshire Pudding, Hill says that his staff asks diners whether they would like to share their meals. Small dishes, shared meals and "mixing it up" is not something commonly done in Britain, but Yorkshire Pudding will bring full dishes to the table and offer individual plates for each diner. "That way, people still get the presentation of the dishes as they were designed, but can carve them up however they like," Hill says. This practice is also popular at The Pawn, although largely for rotisseries (烤肉馆),Tamlyn says. "Some tables will arrive on a Sunday, order a whole chicken and a shoulder of lamb or a baby pig, and just stay for hours enjoying everything we bring out for them."Some British traditions are too sacred (神圣的)to mess with, however, Tomes says. Keep it downIn some countries, you should be careful about your volume. In France, a loud tone of voic e, particularly in a one-to-one conversation, can be rude.French use different volumes for different situations. In a c afé, you can't overhear a discussion at the nearest table, even if it is only two or three feet aw ay.So when you are in France, try to keep your voice down in most public places.Hands offIn some Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia, never touch anyone's he ad or pass anything from above the head.Head is considered to be the most sacred body pa rt.Such touch is not good even in informal situations.(1)According to the text, which of the following things you should not do in Thailand?________A Giving even numbers of flowers.B Laughing out loud at making fun of someone at th e table.C Passing anything from above the head.D Talking in a very loud voice.(2)The word"offended"underlined in the second part probably means________.A welcomed.B displeased .C abused.D insulted.(3)Which conclusion can we draw from the text?________A When in Rome,do as the Romans do.B East or west, home is the best. C No cross,no crown. D A constant guest is never welcome.12. Raghu Makwana lost his legs, but his kindness is ever-present.One of his many kindness efforts is the Tulsi project.Whenever he learns of a fam ily with some conflicts or even violent abuse, Raghu courageously walks in to spread good ch eer and gifts them a Tulsi plant. Most of these are complete strangers.Sometimes he'll reci te a prayer, sometimes he'll talk about wise saints(圣人), sometimes he'll share stories.Hearing hopeful messages from a young man without le gs is quite transformative! When he leaves the holy Tulsi plant, people accept it as a blessing; as they care for the plant, and are reminded of its presence every day, they sometimes grow i n empathy(移情作用).To date, he has given out more than 500of these plants, one at a time.Let alone folks in the slums(贫民窟), Raghu even attracts famous people.Once, a philanthropist(慈善家)gave a talk to the slum kids and described the experience of flying in a plane.A few weeks la ter, it so turned out that Spice Jet Airlines donated an entire plane for that whole group of slu m children and young adults, including Raghu, to"fly in the air'.Miss India herself received t hem at the airport, and personally chatted with Raghu about life in the slums, as they were all gifted a royal tour of a big city.Even more recently, when Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, the forme r president of India, was giving a talk, he was deeply inspired by Rashu. As a Lok Mitra fellow for our Moved By Love team, Raghu continues to share his sympathy in creative ways.To start 20ll, Raghu gave birth to one of his dreams. When he lived out on the streets, he often felt deeply moved by others on the streets who had even less than him .He put together a team of five everyday folks, (one of whom is blind!), who would make small sacrifices in their own lives to support delivery of hand--cooked meals for some of the absolutely neglected people on the streets. They appropriatel y named it"Food of Sacrifice".(1)Which of the following is NOT included in the Tulsi project?________A Solving conflicts between people.B Giving people food.C Giving people plants as gifts.D Telling stories to people.(2)What is the main idea of Paragraph Two?________A Raghu's influence on people.B An experience of flying in the air.C Dr.D Raghu's dream in the future.(3)"Food of Sacrifice"is________.A an organization for women and children .B an action from the government.C a source of Raghu's income.D a project organized by Raghu.(4)The article is written mainly by________.A giving examples.B making comparisons.C giving definition .D listing fi gures.13. Do you have memories of being kidnapped (绑架) by aliens (外星人) and taken away rapidly in a spaceship? You wouldn't be alone.Several thousand peopl e worldwide reported to have had such experiences, researchers say.But in a new study, a p sychology expert at London's Goldsmiths College says these experiences are proof of the wea kness of the human memory, rather than evidence of life in outer space."Maybe what we're dealing with here is false memories, and not that people are actually be ing kidnapped and taken aboard spaceships, "says Professor Chris French, who surveyed 19s o-called victims.Several of the victims reported being taken away from their beds or cars by alien creatures around four feet high, with long and lean arms and legs and oversized heads, French said.S ome men said they were forced to take painful medical examinations by the aliens. Many of the alien experiences could be explained by sleep paralysis, a condition in which a person is awake and aware of the surroundings but is unable to move.Sleep paralysis often leads to hallucinations-the experience of seeing or feeling something that is not really there and 40percent of people experience the state at least once in their lives, French said.A rich imagination was also at play.Several of the alien victims were more likely to fantasize and reported to have seen gh osts (幽灵) and have unnatural abilities."People have very rich fantasy lives, "said French, who is due to present his findings at a pu blic seminar at London's Science Museum on Wednesday."So much that they often mix up what's happening in their heads with what is going on in the real world."(1)According to Chris French,if someone told you an alien experience again, you might________.A believe the story.B just laugh it away.C wonder why.D report it to the p olice.(2)The underlined word"fantasize"in Paragraph 4probably means________.A use vivid imagination.B tell the truth.C have good memories.D make up excuses.(3)What is the author's attitude towards alien experiences?________A Puzzling.B Supportive.C Respectful.D Opposed.(4)Where can this passage probably be found?________A A science magazine.B A textbook.C A science fiction.D A storybook.14. Happiness is a journeyWe always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, tha n another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with.We will cer tainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse (配偶) gets his or her act together. When we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vacatio n when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than right now.If not now, when? Ou r life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to b e happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said, "for a long time it had seeme d to me that life was about to begin a real life. But there was always some obstacle in the wa y, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a de bt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness.Happiness is the way.So treasure every moment that you have. And remember that time waits for no one.So stop waiting until you finish school, until yo u go back to school; until you get married, until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide t hat there is no better time than right now to be happy…Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't need money, love like yo u've never been hurt, and dance like no one's watching.(1)In the third paragraph, the author uses Alfred Souza's quote in order to________.A support his viewpoint.B introduce one more topic.C enrich the content of the a rticle .D compare their different views on happiness.(2)The underlined word"this"in the second paragraph probably refers to"________".A Life will be better after we get married, have a baby and another. B Our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her a ct together. C When we retire,we are able to go on a nice holiday. D Our life is always filled with challenges.(3)The best title of the text might be________.A Owning the present is owning the future.B Pursuing Happiness is Nature of Us Hum ans.C Happiness is a journey, not a destination. D How to Possess Real Happiness.(4)The main idea of the second paragraph is that________.ll be much more productive and creati ve after agoA Only when we get whatever we want can we feel our life is complete.B Whatever ha ppens in our life,we should live at present. C We shouldn't enjoy happiness at present but in the future . D We cannot enjoy happiness now because we are facing many challenges.四、(每小题10分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.15.阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

advertisementsafter determining the target audience for a product or service, advertising agencies must select the appropriate media for the advertisement. we discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. we focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home. internet, and direct mail.televisiontelevision is an attractive medium for advertising because it delivers mass audiences to advertisers. when you consider that nearly three out of four americans have seen the game show who wants to be a millionaire? you can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. when advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication.but television is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it.televisions influence on advertising is fourfold. first, narrowcasting means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. the golf channel, for instance.is watched by people who play golf. home and garden television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. thus, audiences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的) than they have been in the past.second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. this has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers.newspaper?after television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad revenue is newspapers. the new york times, which reaches a national audience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually, ii m increased its national circulation (发行量) byb40% and is now available for home delivery in ion ciues. locally, newspapers are the largest advertising medium.newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television and provide a way for advertisers to communicate a longer. more detailed message to their audience than they can through 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the massage out.newspapers are ofen the most important form of news for a local community, and they develop a high degree of loyalty from local reader.radioadvertising on radio continues to grow radio is often used in conjunction with outdoor bill-boards (广告牌) and ihe internetto reach even more customers than television. advertisers are likely to use radio because it is a less expensive medium than television, which means advertisers can afford to repeal their ads often. internet companies are also turning 10 radio advertising. radio provides a way for advertisers to communicate with audience members at all times of theday.consumers listen to radio on their way to school or work,at work, on the way home, and in the evening hours.two major changes—satellite and internet radio—will force radio advertisers to adapt their methods. both of these radio forms allow listeners to tune in stations that are more distant than thelocal stations they could receive in the past. as a result, radio will increasingly attract target audiences who live many miles apart.magazinesnewsweeklies, women’s titles, and business magazines have all seen increases in advertising because they attract the high-end market, magazines are popular with advertisers becauseof the narrow market that they deliver. a broadcast medium such as network television attracts all types of audience members, but magazine audiences are more homogeneous, if you read sports illustrated, for example, you have much in common with the magazine’s other readers. advertisers see magazines as an efficient way of reaching target audience members.advertiser using the print media-magazines and newspapers-will need to adapt to two main changes. first, the internet will bring larger audiences to local newspapers, these second. advertisers will have to understand how to use an increasing number of magazines for their target audiences. althoughsome magazines will maintain national audiences, a large number of magazines will entertain narrower audiences.out-of-home advertisingout-of-home advertising. also called place-based advertising, has become an increasingly effective way of reaching consumers, who are more active than ever before. many consumers today do not sit at home and watch television. using billboards, newsstands, and bus shelters for advertising is an effective way of reaching these on-the-go consumers. more consumers travel longer distances to and from work, which also makes out-of-home advertising effective, technology has changed the nature of the billboard business, making it a more effective medium than in the past.using digital printing, billboard companies can print abillboard in 2 hours, compared with 6 days previously. this allows advertisers more variety in the types of messages they create because they.can change their messages more quickly.internetas consumers become more comfortable with online shopping, advertisers will seek to reach this market as consumers get more of their news and information from the internet, theability of television and radio to get the word out to consumers will decrease. the challenge to internet advertisers is to create ads that audience members remember.internet advertising will play a more prominent role in organizations advertising in the near ftuture. internet audiences tend to be quite homogeneous, but small. advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach these audiences and will have to adapt their persuasive strategies to the online medium as well.direct maila final advertising medium is direct mail, which uses mailings to consumers to communicate a clients message direct mail includes newsletters. postcards and special promotions. direct mail is an effective way to build relationships with consumers.for many businesses.direct mail is the most effective from of advertising.28. with the increase in the number of tv channels_________. a. the cost of tv advertising has decreased b. the nuiflber of tv viewers has increasedc. advertisers interest in other media has decreasedd. the number of tv ads people can see has increased30.advertising on radio continues to grow because___________. a. more local radio stations have been set up b. modern technology makes it more entertaining c. it provides easy access to consumersd. it has been revolutionized by internet radio.31.magazines are seen by advertisers as an efficient wayto___________. a. reach target audiencesb. modern technology makes it more entertainingc. appeal to educated people.d. convey all kinds of messagesduniversities branch outas never before in their long history, universities have become instruments of national competition as well as instruments of peace. they are the place of the scientific discoveries thatmove economies forward, and the primary means of educating the talent required to obtain and maintain competitive advantage. but at the same time, the opening of national borders to the flow of goods, services, information and especially people has made universities a powerful force for global integration, mutual understanding and geopolitical stability.in response to the same forces that have driven the world economy, universities have become more self-consciouslyglobal: seeking students from around the world who represent the entire range of cultures and values, sending their own students abroad to prepare them for global careers, offering courses of study that address the challenges of an interconnected world and collaborative (合作的) research programs to advance science for the benefit of all humanity.of the forces shaping higher education none is more sweeping than the movement across borders.over the past three decades the number of students leaving home each year to study abroad has grown at an annual rate of 3.9 percent, from 800 000 in 1975 to 2.5 million in 2004. most travel from one developed nation to another, but the flow from developing to developed countries is growing rapidly. the reverse flow, from developed to developing countries, is on the rise, too.today foreign students earn 30 percent of the doctoral degrees awarded in the united states and 38 percent of those in the united kingdom. and the number crossing borders for undergraduate study is growing as well, to 8 percent of the undergraduates at americas best institutions and 10 percent of all undergraduates in the uk. in the united states, 20 percent of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born, and in china many newly hired faculty members at the top research universities received their graduate education abroad.universities are also encouraging students to spend some of their undergraduate years in another country. in europe, more than 140 000 students participate in the erasmus program each year, taking courses for credit in one of 2 200 participating institutions across the continent. and in the united states, institutions are helping place students in summer internships (实习) abroad to prepare them for global careers. yale and harvard have led the way, offering every undergraduate at least one international study or internship opportunity—and providing the financial resources to make it possible.globalization is also reshaping the way research is done. one new trend involves sourcing portions of a research program to another country. yale professor and howard hughes medical institute investigator tian xu directs a research centre focused on the genetics of human disease at shanghais fudan university, in collaboration with faculty colleagues from bothschools. the shanghai centre has 95 employees and graduate students working in a 4 300-square-meter laboratory facility. yale faculty, postdoctors and graduate students visit regularly and attend videoconference seminars with scientists from both campuses. thearrangement benefits both countries; xus yale lab is more productive, thanks to the lower costs of conducting research in china, and chinese graduate students, postdoctors and faculty get on-the-job training from a world-class scientist and his us team.as a result of its strength in science, the united states has consistently led the world in the commercialization of major new technologies, from the mainframe computer and the integrated circuit of the 1960s to the internet infrastructure (基础设施) and applications software of the 1990s. the link between university-based science and industrial application is often indirect but sometimes highly visible: silicon valley was intentionally created by stanford university, and route 128 outside boston has long housed companies spun off from mit and harvard. around the world, governments have encouraged copying of this model, perhaps most successfully in cambridge, england, where microsoft and scores of other leading software and biotechnology companies have set up shop around the university.for all its success, the united states remains deeply hesitant about sustaining the research-university model. most politicians recognize the link between investment in science and national economic strength, but support for research funding has been unsteady. the budget of the national institutes of health doubled between 1998 and 2003, but has risen more slowly than inflation since then. support for the physical sciences and engineering barely kept pace with inflation during that same period. the attempt to make up lost ground is welcome, but the nation would be better served by steady, predictable increases in science funding at the rate of long-term gdp growth, which is on the order of inflation plus 3 percent per year.american politicians have great difficulty recognizing that admitting more foreign students can greatly promote the national interest by increasing international understanding.adjusted for inflation, public funding for international exchanges and foreign-language study is well below the levels of 40 years ago. in the wake of september 11, changes in the visa process caused a dramatic decline in the number of foreign students seeking admission to us universities, and a corresponding surge in eollments in australia, singapore and the uk. objections from american university and business leaders led to improvements in the process and a reversal of the decline, but the united states is still seen by many as unwelcoming to international students.most americans recognize that universities contribute to the nations well-being through their scientific research, but many fear that foreign students threaten american competitiveness by taking their knowledge and skills back home. they fail to grasp that welcoming foreign students to the united states has two important positive effects: first, the very best of them stay in the states and—like immigrants throughout history—strengthen the nation; and second, foreign students who study in the united states become ambassadors for many of its most cherished (珍视) values when they return home. or at least they understand them better. in america as elsewhere, few instruments of foreign policy are as effective in promoting peace and stability as welcoming international university students.32. in the united states, how many of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born? a. 10%. b. 20%. c. 30%. d. 38%.33. how do yale and harvard prepare their undergraduates for global careers? a. they organize a series of seminars on world economy. b. they offer them various courses in international politics. c. they arrange for them to participate in the erasmus program. d. they give them chances for international study or internship.34. an example illustrating the general trend of universities globalization is__________. a. yales collaboration with fudan university on genetic research b. yales helping chinese universities to launch research projects c. yales student exchange program with european institutions d. yales establishing branch campuses throughout the world 35. what do we learn about silicon valley from the passage? a. it housesmany companies spun off from mit and harvard. b. it is known to be the birthplace of microsoft company. c. it was intentionally created by stanford university. d. it is where the internet infrastructure was built Endangered Species Act and is considered“vulnerable”by the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN).Despite the laws that protect them, their numbers are still in the decline. The desert tortoise in the areas has lived for thousands of years. This animal is able to survive ground temperature over 140 degrees F and is known to 1ive as long as 60 to 80 years.However,ninety-five percent of the life of a desert tortoise is spent in the ground escaping the heat in a hole or passage in the ground.Holes can be easily destroyed by off-highway vehicles that do not stay on built roads.Disasters also occur when they seek shade under parked cars.Desert tortoises are also harmed by several diseases such as the upper respiratory tract disease often found in adopted tortoises.Pet owners releasing sick tortoises into the wild has resulted in diseases being spread to wild tortoises. The desert tortoise feeds on a dune(沙丘)primrose during spring.Non-native Sahara mustard(芥菜)seen in the background is a weed that competes with the native plants for water and nutrients. In someareas, mustard grows so densely that it is nearly impossible for desert tortoises to pass through.Vehicles, which do not stay on built roads and do not get washed frequently, contribute to spreading weeds.Rubbish, such as burst balloon,is a danger to desert tortoises. The balloon can be mistaken for food by desert tortoises and, once consumed, may remain in the stomachs and intestines(肠)giving them a false sense of fullness that may cause them to starve.28.What does the underlined on TortoiseC.Protection of the Desert TortoiseD.Dangers the Desert Tortoise Is FacingDOn Delancy Street in Lower Manhattan,an exciting new project is being developed in a Williamsburg Bridge trolley station.Designed by James Ramsey, owner of Raad Studio, and Dan Barasch, the project will transform the abandoned space into a new, futuristic city landmark tided the Lowline.Ramsey planned to use solar technology in the site, creating an environment where plant life could grow underground.Joined to the JMZ Essex subway stop, the park will not only be an entertaining attraction,it will also become a part of passengers’lives.Much like the High Line built in Manhattan on an elevated(高出地面的)section of abandoned New York Central Railroad in the Lower West Side, the park will combine the natural elements of the park with industrial aspects already available in the city. The solar collecting system in the Lowline will catch sunlight above ground, transfer it underground and distribute it around the park via reflective domes(穹顶).The light enables plants and trees to grow.During periods of sunlight, electricity would not be necessary to light the space. In 2012,the Lowlineteam exhibited this technology in an abandoned warehouse in the Lower East Side, available for the public and press to view so that proof of its ability could be confirmed.Since then, many city officials have shown their support of the concept and several programs have been conducted to involve youth and young designers into the park’s creation.Though the negotiations off the park creation have not been completed and it will likely not be available for citizens to enjoy until around 2020,the inventive idea will bring a dynamic new attraction to the city.It will not only create a new escape from the industrial noise, but also introduce the concept of parks and plant growth being made possible in the most unlikely places.32.What is the similarity between the High Line and the Lowline?A.Offering convenience only for passengers.B.Planting the same types of plant life.C.Making full advantage of solar technology.D.Turning industrial wasteland into green space.33.Which is true of the future Lowline?A.It’s an exciting trolley station.B.It’s a long-term open exhibition.C.It’s a solar-powered underground park.D.It’s a city landmark above the ground.34.Why did the Lowline team hold the exhibition?A.To conduct some programs.B.To prove the technology works.C.To win support from volunteers.D.To show the warehouse is useful.35.What’s the author’s attitude towards the concept of the Lowline? A.Optimistic.B.Unconcerned.C.Opposed.D.Doubtful.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
