I try my best but there are so many confusing rules and exceptions that I just can't seem to get it right. Why doesn't "tough" follow the same pattern? It doesn't make any sense to me.And then you have all the different ways to spell the same sound, like the long "a" sound in "cake", "baby", "sleigh", and "eigth". How am I supposed to remember which letter combination goes with which word? Sometimes I mix them up and spell "cake" as "cak" because I forget that the long "a" sound is spelled with an "a_e" in that particular word. It's SO confusing!Speaking is another area where I really struggle. Pronouncing certain sounds like "th" as in "thing" or "th" as in"then" is almost impossible for me. My tongue just doesn't want to work that way. And good luck getting me to pronounce the "r" sound properly after a vowel like in "car" or "fur". My version comes out sounding more like "cah" and "fuh". It's embarrassing and I know the other kids are silently laughing at me.Grammar gives me a headache too. When do I use "is" and when do I use "are"? Verb tenses drive me absolutely crazy. Past tense, present tense, future tense, present progressive - I can never keep them all straight. And don't even get me started on subject-verb agreement! Is it "he go" or "he goes"? I always second-guess myself.Then you have things like punctuation, capitalization, and that pesky apostrophe for possessives and contractions. Just thinking about it makes me want to pull my hair out. I make careless mistakes all the time because I forget the rules or I just get lazy and sloppy. My writing looks like a preschooler's sometimes, which is pretty embarrassing for a fourth grader.The spelling tests we have every Friday are my personal nightmare. I study really hard all week, sounding out each word over and over again until I think I've got it locked into my brain. It's like all that studying gets erased from my memory as soon as I walk through that classroom door. Dear Abbey:
I am Li Hua, a high school boy from China. I am writing to ask for some advice about a personal matter.
My short height has troubled / upset me for years. For one thing, it prevents me from practising many sports that I really wish to take up, in particular, basketball. You never know how I envy those tall guys, who can easily get the ball in this game. For another, which is the more bitter part, I can no longer put up with(忍受) / tolearate my classmates' unkind / mean jokes about my height. It seems to remain forever the only topic whenever they start a chat about me.
As you can imagine, I have always dreamt of growing taller. One of my friends recommended at least 50 pull-ups(引体向上) every day. I followed his suggestion but it turned out to work little. I wonder if you could give me some professional advice on increasing my height.
As well / In addition / More importantly, what am I supposed to do with / how can I handle these hurting jokes? I thought about fighting back but I was worried it would end up with a mess / go beyond control. Anyway, I never hope to be an enemy to those who share classes with me every day.
I would appreciate it if you could give me an early reply.
