The Nobel Prize诺贝尔奖
The origin of the Nobel PrizeThe Nobel Prize resulted form a late change in the will of Alfred Nobel, who did not want to be remembered after his death as a propagator of violence - he invented dynamite.Alfred Nobel's willAlfred Nobel's will from November 25, 1895Five Nobel Prizes were instituted by the final will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist and industrialist, who was the inventor of the high explosive dynamite. Though Nobel wrote several wills during his lifetime, the last was written a little over a year before he died, and signed at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris on 27 November 1895. Nobel bequeathed 94% of his total assets, 31 million Swedish Kronor, to establish and endow the five Nobel Prizes.(As of 2008 that equates to 186 million US dollars.)“ The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way:The capital shall be invested by my executors in safe securities and shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency; and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiological or medical works by Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm; and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting. It is my expressed wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration whatever shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, so that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not.”—Alfred Nobel, Alfred Nobel's WillAlthough Nobel's will established the prizes, his plan was incomplete and, due to various other hurdles, it took five years before the Nobel Foundation could be established and the first prizes awarded on 10 December 1901.The current size of the Nobel endowment fund is about $400 million USD.The Nobel Prize (Swedish pronunciation: [noˈbɛl], Swedish definite form, singular: Nobelpriset; Norwegian: Nobelprisen) is a set of annual international awards bestowed in a number of categories by Swedish and Norwegian committees in recognition of cultural and/or scientific advances. The will of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel established the prizes in 1895. The prizes in Physics, Chemistry,Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace were first awarded in 1901. The related Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Scienceswas created in 1968. Between 1901 and 2012, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 555 times to 856 people and organizations. With some receiving the Nobel Prize more than once, this makes a total of 835 individuals and 21 organizations. The Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway, while the other prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award available in the fields of literature, medicine, physics, chemistry, peace, and economics. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences; the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; theSwedish Academy grants the Nobel Prize in Literature; and the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by a Swedish organisation but by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The various prizes are awarded yearly. Each recipient, or laureate, receives a gold medal, a diploma and a sum of money, which is decided by the Nobel Foundation. As of 2012, each prize was worth 8 million SEK (c. US$1.2 million, €0.93 million). The prize is not awarded posthumously; however, if a person is awarded a prize and dies before receiving it, the prize may still be presented. Though the average number of laureates per prize increased substantially during the 20th century, a prize may not be shared among more than three people.

My mother taught us that if you work hard, you get paid for it. That is what you do. And you do it better than anybody else has done.――Tom Cruise“我妈妈曾教育我说如果你努力工作,你就会有所收获。
那就是你应该做的,并且你应该比别人做得更好。
”――汤姆?克鲁斯Tom Cruise is among the upper echelon1of talent in Hollywood. His films take in hundreds of millions of dollars and his fans also number in the millions. A powerful man who started out an average person like you or me and became a superstar."The baby's biggest star stayed grounded, despite a broken home, dyslexia and a pesky press".Born in the summer of 1962, in Syracuse, New York, Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (real name of Tom Cruise) survived a childhood that might kindly be described as "disjointed". His father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer, dragged the family around North America looking for work in Louisville, Kentucky, Ottawa, Ontario and Glen Ridge, New Jersey, among other places. Although his parents divorced when Cruise was eleven, the peripatetic lifestyle continued as his mother, Mary, a special-education teacher, tried her best to support Tom and his three sisters, Marian, Lee Anne and Cass, holding down as many as three jobs at once2 to keep her daughters and son fed and clothed. Tom Cruise worked as a paper boy and dish-washer at the age of 12 to pay for his school uniform, though he was the third of four children.Deadbeat3 Dad refused to pay child support, and it wasn't until 1904, shortly before Thomas Senior's death, that Tom was able to forgive his father. His father's absence is a large part of why Cruise chose to drop "Mapother" from his name at the age of 18.Thanks to the vagabond life, Cruise attend eight elementary schools and three high schools. His educational difficulties were exacerbated by undiagnosed dysiexie, which compounded the problems of adolescence and left the youngster literally unable to distinguish his right hand from his left. On top of that, his teachers forced the naturallyleft-handed Cruise to write with his right hand. Tom said, "Iwasn't bright enough to go to college. I was always put in remedial classes and treated like a dummy." Nonetheless, the remedial classes in which Cruise found himself contributed to what the entertainment industry now calls "Cruise Control"―Tom's legendary need to zero in on and control everything. "I had to focus if I wanted to graduate," he once said, "because I really had to listen to what the teachers were saying." Cruise admits that living in places as disparate as Kentucky and Ontario left him with a "bizarre accent". Unableto form or sustain friendships, because of his family's transience, the young man turned to athletics. He also tried to make his studies up by participating in all sorts of sports, especially playing soccer and wrestling. He even considered a career as a prowrestler, until a leg injury cancelled that option. The injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it was only after his athletic career ended that Cruise tried the stage, landing leads in high school productions of Guys and Dolls(he played Nathan Detroit) and Godspell. Boosted by the adrenaline4 rush hefelt--and the urging of an agent who happened to be in the audience one night--Cruise left high school before graduation and headed to New York with 500 in his pocket. He set himself a deadline5 of ten years to "make it".He did not have to wait that long. A network casting executive told Cruise he wasn't "pretty enough" for television, so he went for film. Within five months, he landed a tiny, uncredited part in the Brooke Shields bomb Endless Love, for which he earned day scale--at the time, a whopping300. A few days later, he landed a bit part in the military drama Taps, alongside Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton. Within weeks, Cruise had been upgraded to a large role, one which made critics--and the audience--take notice.Cruise landed his first starting role as a sensitive kid opposite6"older woman" Shelly Long in Losin'It(1983), a mid- dling teen coming-of-age comedy.Cruise's career prospects brightened when he persuaded Francis Ford Coppola to cast him in a small role as a tough guyin The Outsiders(1983). He failed to stand out amid a talented ensemble7 of teen heartthrobs that included Mat Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, and Ralph Macchio. Nonetheless, the job led to more high-profile8 assignments. Cruise gained celebrity in the superior teen sex satire Risky Business(also 1983). As an anxious, affluent, suburban teen poised precariously on the brink of young adulthood, Cruise created a resonant protagonist for young Reagan-era audiences.Cruise performed well in a more naturalistic mode in All the Right Moves( 1983 ), a sober high school football drama that fared modestly at the box office. He next grew his hair long and made the wrong move with Ridley Scott's colossal fantasy flop, Legend (1985). Cruise solidified his star status with one of the signature hits of the '80s, Top Gun(1986) . It was said that Tom Cruise could hardly become a real actor because of his extremely good looks. Now in his thirties, he has proved through his movies that he possesses more than just good looks to make him one of Hollywood's Top Guns. With flying sequences edited to the rhythms of pop tunes, the film functioned as both Navy recruiting ad and glossy romantic adventure. When Tom Cruise was two and a half years old, his mother says, he used to terrify her by leaving the house to go on "adventures"to a nearby lake in the woods. No longer the engaging boy-next-door, Cruise's Maverick was a cocky go-getter9 armed with a killer smile. He would play variations on this role in several subsequentfilms――particularly the less ambitious ones(e. g. Cocktail, 1988; Days of Thunder, 1990).Not content to be a matinee idol, Cruise began stretchinghis abilities in the mid- 80s――often paired with older, more established male stars of previous eras――with impressive results. He enriched his characterization of the talented but arrogant young man opposite Paul Newman in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money(1986). Cruise consolidated his serious dramatic credentials with Barry Levinson's Rain Man (1988), in which he played the brother of an autistic man.Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July(1989) earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his hard-hitting portrayal of anti-war activist Ron Kovic.Cruise stumbled a bit with the critically and commercially disappointing Far and Away(1992), a goofy period romance co-starring his wife Nicole Kidman(whom he married in 1990 after they had worked together in Days of Thunder). He recovered with a highly popular court-martial drama, A Few Good Men (1992), wherein he successfully confronted an iconic Jack Nicholson. He played a lawyer again in the thriller The Firm (1993) with comparably successful results at the box office10.Never content to rest on his laurels(or his bank account) for along, Cruise raised eyebrows11--and more than a few hackles12) --by accepting the central role of the vampire Lestat in David Geffen's lavish production of Neil Jordon's InterviewWith The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles(1994) . Many balked at the idea of the All-American go-getter playing the decadent, ambisexual European predator of Anne Rice's novel. Rice herself was the harshest critic as she traveled about the country trashing the casting decision while on a book tour. Sporting blond locks and blue contact lenses13 (his eyes are naturally green), Cruise eventually won Rice's approval and generally positive (if hardly enthusiastic) notices. The film was also notable for teaming the superstar with less familiar heartthrobs Brad Pitt, Christian Slater, and Antonio Banderas. Although Cruise was only 32 at the time, there was a peculiar sense of his passing on the baton.Cruise was all but14 omnipresent in the media as he aggressively promoted his feature producing debut15, the post Cold War espionage movie, Mission: Impossible(1996) . Based on the fondly remembered 60s TV show, the project had languished in various development hells before Cruise got involved. This marked the inaugural project for Cruise/Wagner Productions, the com- pany the actor formed with his onetime agent in 1992. Rumors abounded about Cruise clashing with director Brian De Palma over budgetary and story matters.Nonetheless, despite international location shooting,high-tech stunts, computer-generated visual effects, and last-minute re-writes by a stellar assortment of scripters. Mission: Impossible came in on time and under budget at approximately 67 million. (Cruise deferred his 20 million salary. ) The reviews were mixed-some treated it as an extravagant but cold vanity production with a confused story-line but most admired the cinematic technique. As anticipated, business was brick. Now a producer as well as an actor, Cruise had numerous projects in various stages of development at the time of the release of his summer blockbuster. Jerry Maguire(1996), in which he played a venal sports agent, was lensing for a Christmas release. He has received Academy Award nomination for best actor in it. Cruise proved once again why he is considered a major Hollywood player. Cruise also announced that he and Kidman were starting production on legendary writer-director Stanley Kubrick's long-awaited return to feature filmmaking, Eyes Wide Shut(scheduled to begin lensing in the fall of 1996) . The film, which was the director's last, had been the subject of controversy, rumor, and speculation since it began filming. It opened to curious critics and audiences alike across the nation, and was met with a violently mixed response. However, it allowed Cruise to once again take part in filmhistory, further solidifying his position as one of Hollywood's most well-placed movers and shakers. This collaboration would mark another milestone in Cruise's quest to be taken seriously as an artist and not just another pretty face--with major commercial clout.Tom's lack of formal education certainly hasn't hurt him: on film, Cruise has twice been a Harvard Law Schoolgrad( The Firm. A Few Good Men) and once a future Princeton freshman ( Risky Business). We are not sure, but we'd bet there's a Cornell grad and even maybe a Yale one in his filmography somewhere (where did Jerry Maguire go to school?). Cruise is not a star that will fade with age.Because of his parents' divorce, Cruise had always insisted he would never marry. But shortly after Top Gun, he met actress Mimi Rogers, eight years his senior, at a small party. The "single for life16”plan was out the window17 . The couple wed in May 1987, in a ceremony so secret that not even the actor's then-publicist knew the "spring bash" to which she'd been invited was actually a Unitarian wedding. Then came Days of Thunder, a major turning point in the actor's life. Not because the film was great--it floppedbig-time-- but because it was during this shoot that he metfuture Mrs. Tom Cruise II, Nicole Kidman, an Australian. Cruise was responsible for the hideous miscasting of the statuesque beauty as a neuro surgeon (at 22, and looking even younger, Kidman seemed a bit like Doogle Howser with a great body), but if she was less than believable on-screen, she shoneoff-screen.Legend has it that Cruise was quite blunt with hissoon-to-be18-ex-wife about his relationship with Kidman. When Rogers showed up on the Days set after returning from a shoot of her own, Cruise apparently crossed his arms and said simply, "I'm with Nicole now."Rogers would get hers, though. Regarding the couple's romantic life, she on ce told Playboy that Cruise"…thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument. My instrument, on the other hand, needs tuning."The divorce, after their three-year marriage, came through in the spring of 1990; Cruise married Kidman on Christmas Eve the same year, in a formal-but-rustic log cabin ceremony.Rain Man co-star(and Oscar winner) Dustin Hoffman served as best man. Ever the penny-pincher; Hoffman gave the couple his-'n-hers bowling balls as a wedding present. Tom, who is a Cancer, seems to have found his home with therambunctious Kidman; the couple have two adopted children, Isabella and Connor. At home, Isabella and Connor keep Cruise grounded. When it comes to parenting, Cruise says, "We're just trying to figure the damn thing out." He and Kidman read to their children "every night before they go to bed, "he says. "We work out our schedules around them. I take them to school, or Nic does." These days, Cruise practices reverse psychology on Connor: "I say yes. He says no. I say no. He says yes. So anytime I want him to do something, Itell him he can't do it, and he says yes and goes and does it."The couple's schedules make for some unorthodoxchild-rearing practices. "Sometimes we go out to dinner and stay up until about 2, 3 in the morning and wake up the kids," he says. "They chat and play games, and they go back to sleep. It's wild19. "It may not be conventional, but Cruise notes that his own upbringing was hardly typical. "What is right? "What is wrong?" "he asks. "As long as we are together, that is the most important thing." The greatest challenge, he admits, is discipline. "Especially the way we travel, to keep that consistent is difficult." Then again, "they get to travel the world and learn about different cultures."Wherever they go, Cruise and Kidman strive to keep a prying public from penetrating the iron curtain of privacy that they draw around their home life. In November, 1997, Cruise successfully sued a British tabloid that had revived an old rumor that Cruise is gay and his eight-year marriage is for cameras only. "They printed that and said some brutal things about mychil-dren," he says. "I just go, 'You know what, guys? This is not okay. My kids go to school, and they have friends, and things go out on the Internet. Stop it. It is not okay. '"So how are things between the pair Cruise which were once claimed would be on their honeymoon forever? All in all, things must be good: For kicks they fly a two-seater plane, dubbed Sweet Nic,with Cruise at the controls and a mirror specially angled so he can see his wife's face behind him."Kidman's dreams, shared by her husband Cruise, are to be happily married in fifty years' time, to be offered a good choice of scripts and to be able to look back and say they didn't waste a lot of time. She hopes that she is professional in what she does, and balance the professional side with the private side of their life. "Finally perhaps I'll just be seen as me, the actress, not just Mrs. Tom Cruise, "said Nicole Kidman.Tom Cruise is generous. He bought his mum a mansion onthe New Jersey coast, flash cars for all his sisters and has even been known to hand100 bills to tramps.Tom Cruise takes his religious belief as seriously as his showbiz career. As a member of the controversial Church of Sci- entology, he turned down a role in Indecent Proposal, a block- buster movie in 1993, because he finds gambling offensive. He takes extremely good care of his health. He has avoided heavy drinking since he was thrown out of his high school American football team for being "drunk and obnoxious". He has never smoked, either. Now he is a fitness fanatic who works out for two hours a day, including a six-mile jog. But he says, "I hate being called a beefcake20 I don't want to be remembered for just my biceps and teeth."Off screen, Cruise is a veritable superhero in the flesh21. Over the past few years, he has rescued people from a burning boat, saved a woman who had been hit by a car and paid for her hos- pital bills, pulled two kids to safety when they were in danger of being crushed at a Mission: Impossible screening…. Wherever there's action, it seems, on-or off-screen. Tom Cruise is nearby.注释:1. echelon n.阶层。

Nobel Prize英文版简介
Nobel lectures
• According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, each laureate is required to give a public lecture on a subject related to the topic of their prize. These lectures normally occur during Nobel Week before the award ceremony, but this is not mandatory. The laureate is only obliged to give the lecture within six months of receiving the prize. Some have happened even later. For example, US president Theodore Roosevelt won the Peace Prize in 1906 but gave his lecture in 1910, after his term in office. The lectures are organised by the same association who selected the laureates.
Background and Establishment of the Nobel Foundation
• Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896. The provisions of his will and their unusual purpose, as well as their partly incomplete form, attracted great attention and soon led to skepticism and criticism, also aimed at the testator due to his international spirit. Only after several years of negotiations and often rather bitter conflicts, and after various obstacles had been circumvented or overcome, could the fundamental concepts presented in the will assume solid form with the establishment of the Nobel Foundation. On April 26, 1897, the Norwegian Parliament approved the will and soon afterwards elected members to the prize-awarding Norwegian Nobel Committee of the Storting. In 1898 the other prizeawarding bodies followed suit, approving the will after mediation: Karolinska Institute on June 7, the Swedish Academy on June 9 and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on June 11.

2023-2024学年江苏省南京市高二下学期期中英语试卷
2023-2024学年江苏省南京市高二下学期期中英语试卷From a multi-day hike following the routes of a Japanese poet, to a classic climb in the Argentinian Lake District, there are thousands of incredible trails (小路) that allow us to get up close to nature.Appalachian Trail, United StatesExtending for 2,200 miles, the Appalachian Trail is listed as the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. It runs from Springier Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through some of the most remote country in the United States. That means it’s a hard task, either for those with endless vacation allowance, or walkers looking to do a small piece of a classic route. The Basho Wayfarer, JapanThis self-guided trip follows a route taken by the poet Matsuo Basho over 300 years ago. The six-day hike starts in Sendai and works its way through the northern Tohoku region, passing through the UNESCO World Heritage (遗产)Site of Hiraizumi and along the ancient Dewa Kaido path. With its beech and cherry forests, it finishes at the temple of Yamadera.Mount Toubkal, MoroccoThe path upwards rises from the village of Imlil, passing over a dry river bed before rising sharply through a temple and on towards a large mountain cottage. After overnight here, hikers set off up the snowfield to the peak, where the Atlas Mountains open out and the views are breathtaking. A local guide and muleteers for carrying luggage are a must. The Dingle Way, IrelandIt is a ring-like path th at offers the best way to get under the skin of wild County Kerry in Ireland’s south west. Starting in the town of Tralee, the clockwise path follows narrow roads, taking in the wide sweep of sand at Inch Strand, passing along the clifftops outside Dingle town and heading around the edge of Mount Brardon, the highest peak on the Dingle Peninsula.1. What do we know about the Basho Wayfarer?A.It offers no guide service. B.It was built by a poet.C.It ends in the northern Tohoku region. D.It is on the world heritage list.2. Where can hikers enjoy a good view of snow?A.Appalachian Trail. B.The Basho Wayfarer.C.Mount Toubkal. D.The Dingle Way.3. What is special about the Dingle Way?A.It follows a circle path. B.It is the longest in the world.C.It finishes at Mount Brandon. D.It reaches the highest peak in Ireland.Anthony Doerr’s new bestseller, All the Light We Cannot See, holds special appeal for me. That’s how I would describe it. From the poetic language, to the realization of what the tile actually means: that underneath the surface of history, there is light that has not been seen, and stories that have gone untold.I’m going to be honest-love for this book didn’t hit me straight away. In fact, my first attempt to read it last month ended with me putting it aside and going to find something easier, lighter and less descriptive to read. But this book is built on beautiful imagery. Both in the literal sense-the physical world of 1940s Paris and Germany, and the metaphorical (隐喻性的)sense-scientific and philosophical references to light, to seeing and not seeing, and the differences between the two. It’s a beautiful work of genius, but it does get a little complicated at times. However, when we get into the meat of this World War II novel, it’s also an upsetting story of a childhood torn apart by war. It’s about Parisian Marie Laure who has been blind since she was six, and a German orphan called Werner who finds himself at the center of the Hitler Youth. Both of their stories are told with sensitivity and sympathy, each one forced down a path by their personal circumstances and by that destructive monster-war.I think this is the kind of book you will never appreciate if you stop too soon-I learned that lesson. From the first to last page, there is a theme of invisible lines running parallel (平行的)to one another and sometimes, just sometimes, crossing in the strangest way. These two lives we are introduced to seem to be worlds apart, and yet they come together and influence one another. It was this, more than the predictably awful tale of war, that made me feel quite emotional.4. What does the writer think of the book?A.Light and easy to read.B.Rich in philosophical ideas.C.Fascinating but too descriptive.D.Too complicated for its theme.5. What can we learn about Marie Laure and Werner?A.The war leads to their sensitivity.B.They know each other at an early age.C.The Hitler Youth pushes them to grow.D.They both have a miserable childhood.6. What particularly stirred the writer’s emot ions?A.The book’s dramatic ending.B.The book’s beautiful imagery.C.The characters’ interconnected destiny.D.The suffering brought by World War II.7. What is the purpose of this text?A.To share the writer’s feelings of a book.B.To recommend a delightful bestseller.C.To tell readers a heartbreaking story.D.To analyze the structure of a book.Did you know that the custom of turning our clocks an hour ahead during the year first originated in World War I? By making the days “longer” , the goal was for households to conserve electricity and other forms of energy like fuel. Recently, the US Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act. The bill must also go through the House of Representatives before it can be signed by the President. If passed, Daylight SavingTime(DST) could become the permanent system of the time.Although the specific dates of the time change differ, many countries around the world observe a biannual system of the time. From mid-March to November in the US, most states practice DST by turning the time forward by an hour from the Standard Time(ST), the local time observed in an area.Though the original purpose of DST was to encourage the conservation of energy, multiple studies suggest that the time shift has not made a significant impact on saving energy costs. While less money is spent on electricity, costs are still likely to rise with the usage of devices such as air conditioners and computers. Research conducted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has shown that DST time changes lead to a greater risk of car crashes.According to researchers, ST is much more closely related to the body’s circadian rhythm(昼夜节律) which regulates our organs as well as our sleep-wake cycle. By permanently living in DST, children would have to get up and be in school long before the sun rises—which could be 9 am in Seattle and other western states!Proponents argue that because DST maximizes daylight, it encourages safety by lowering crime rates and reducing seasonal depression. DST provides more waking time to enjoy with families and friends, or even to get more work done. The bill is certainly a hot topic of discussion, but one thing is for sure: everyone is in favor of getting rid of the biannual time switch.8. What do we know about DST according to researchers?A.It can make schools start late.B.It helps improve people’s sleeping quality.C.It increases the possibility of traffic accidents.D.It can reduce the usage of electronic devices.9. What does the underlined word “proponents” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.People who are in favor of DST.B.People who are efficient in workingC.People who have seasonal depression.D.People who enjoy the company of friends.10. What is the author’s attitude towards the biannual time switch?A.Positive. B.Neutral.C.Unclear. D.Negative.11. What is the best title for the text?A.The influence of ST B.The significance of STC.The debate about DST D.The histroy of DSTAt its annual general assembly in Vienna last month, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) did something unusual. The chair of its awards committee, Thomas Blunier, presented a breakdown, by gender, of prize nominees (被提名者) and nominators (提名者) since 2014. The data were revealing. Although women make up 37% of the society’s members, they made just 20% of nominations suggesting that women are less likely to nominate than men. The data also showed that people tend to favour their own gender when making nominations-with men most likely to nominate other men. This is clearly a problem, but awareness of the situation opens the door to fixing it. Although women are still under-represented in EGU nominations, their share of awards is now approaching their representation among EGU members, thanks to corrective measures taken by the organization? s awards committee. The EGU is distinct from most other scientific societies that do not make nomination data public, though it is necessary for the fairness among prizewinners. Some other efforts are under way to make prizes fairer. In mathematics, for example, the International Mathematical Union has introduced guidelines to make nominators and award-committee members aware of unconscious bias. Many prize nomination forms now include statements encouraging nominators to consider diversity. The committees that award Nobel prizes have told Nature that they are attempting to increase diversity in nominees and that the proportion of women nominated is rising.Prize-givers need to widen their nomination pools. In 2019, Nature suggested that award organizers might cast their nets wider when seeking nominations by approaching networks that include academies of science in low and middle-income countries. This is still not happening on the scale that it needs to.Sadly, these measures will not make science prizes match global diversity, at least not straight away. Many prizes are based on work carried out decades ago, when the barriers to entering science were even higher than they are today for people from under-represented groups and countries. At the very least, professional societies must ensure that their nomination pools are representatives of their communities. Greater transparency and a wider, more diverse pool of nominees increase the chance of awards rewarding excellence, rather than enlarging existing networks of fame.12. What is the purpose of showing the data from the EGU?A.To show the gender balance among its members.B.To encourage females to nominate other females.C.To reflect that women have been ignored in awards.D.To reveal the significant impact from gender awareness.13. What efforts have been made to promote the fairness among the prizewinners?A.Publicizing the nomination data.B.Widening the application pools by nominees.C.Introducing guidelines on increasing diversity.D.Casting the nets wider when seeking nominations.14. What does the author hold in the last paragraph?A.Existing nomination pools are not transparent.B.Professional societies must make a difference.C.The barriers to entering science will not be higher.D.Science has kept up with the global trend of diversity.15. Which of the following might be the best title for this text?A.European Geosciences Union: An Nontraditional ModelB.Diversity in Science Prizes: Why is Progress So Slow?C.Progress in Science: Nomination Shows Justice for AllD.The Way to Gender Diversity: Difficult, Delicate but DestinedIt’s always exciting to begin a new job. But among the frenzy (激动) of meeting new colleagues, starting new projects, and building new skills, there can be a stressful pressure to succeed. A big part of your success is determined by how quickly you are able to digest lots of information, which can be very hard. 16 .* Manage yourselfWhen you notice information overload, don’t ignore it and don’t panic. Say to yourself, “I’m in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It’s okay to feel this way.” 17 . Remember that emotions can help you better understand yourself and your values.* Sort your information18 . It keeps what it needs more immediately in our short-term memory, and it mixes together information we may need to use in the future to store in our long-term memory. For the information that’s not needed, our brain acts like a garbage management, recycling, and deleting it.* 19Organizations often have digital knowledge management systems to store and take important information. You can do the same to reduce brain burden. I recommend creating a Word or Google document in which you write down information that your brain doesn’t need to remember or store.* Reduce task-switchingMulti-tasking isn’t good for you physically or mentally and is worse for your productivity and cognition (认知). 20 . You can go for longer than that, but be sure to take a break. Focused activity is less taxing than multitasking, but you can’t keep working endlessly. My daughter loved dancing until she didn’t love it. She’s into them for now, but it is okay if that __________ changes. As adults, we are accustomed to __________ the power of saying yes, but what about saying no? 开始颁奖词英文版
开始颁奖词英文版篇一:颁奖词英文版Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you all very much. I'm, I'm so excited to be here. Good evening everybody, ladies, gentlemen, er, Felicity. I'm Jon Stewart and welcome to the 78th Annual Academy Awards. Er, an exciting night, an exciting night.Tonight is the night we celebrate excellence in film with me the 4th male lead from Death to Smoochy rent it. And right now around the world we are being watched by hundreds of millions of people, nearly half of whom are in the process of being adopted by Angenina Jolie. I'm wait listed. It's good stuff. It is incred...I have to say, it's a little shocking to see all these big names here, these huge stars. The Oscar is really, I guess, the one night of the year where you could see all your favorite stars without having to donate any money to the Democratic Party, and it's exciting for the stars as well. This is er, the first time many of you have ever voted for awinner. Oh, it's good. You enjoy, enjoy your votes. The theme of the award show tonight is a return to glamour and thank goodness because for too long Hollywood has done without.Definitely this is an improvement over last year's theme 'night of a thousand sweat pants.' Let's face facts. It hasn't been the best year for Hollywood. The box office was, ermmmm, a little bit, down, and piracy continues to be a problem. So let me just say that if there is anyone out there involved in an illegal movie piracy. Don't do it. Take a good look at these people, these are the people you are stealing from, Look at them!! Face what you've done. There are women here who can barely afford enough gown to cover their breasts. There are a lot really big stars here tonight. It's really exciting. We've got the man Mr. George Clooney, triple nominee. No, Stop it! Stop it! It's you. It's a, it's a terrific night. Two of thenominations for Good Night and Good Luck, which is not just Edward R. Murrow's sign-off. It's also how Mr. Clooney ends all his dates. Now, I kid because I envy. The cast of Capote, is also with us, a tremendous film, ground-breaking,No! I applaud you. I applaud you. Capote was aground-breaking film that broke taboos that showed America not all gay people are virile cowboys. Some are actually effete New York intellectuals. It's true. Capote, of course, addressed very similar themes to Good Night and Good Luck. Both films are about determined journalists, defying obstacles in a relentless pursuit of the truth. Needless to say both are period pieces. There is also, cartoon drama, farth, I say, farth, I demand satisfaction. All right, Steve Spielberg is here? Sir, a pleasure. We've never met. A Best Director nomination for Mu nich, a tremendous film and I congratulate you, Sir. From the man who also gave us Schindler's List. Schindler's List and Munich, I think I speak for all Jews when I say I can't wait to see what happens to us next. Trilogy!Yeah, I do have some sad news to report, er, Bjork, couldn't be here tonight. She was trying on her Oscar dress and Dick Cheney shot her. Um, glad you hear it. Charlize Theron is here nominated for North Country, a tremendous performance. I congratulate you as well. Have you ever seen the film, it's, it's, it's really wonderful. Er, she plays a woman who is constantly judged on her looks and paidless than her male co-workers. It must be wonderful to be done with that and back here inHollywood.I think, er, first time nominee Matt Dillon is joining us, er, a wonderful career. I have enjoyed his work for many many years.I wanted to be him for many many years. He was in Crash, his co-star Sandra Bullock, er, right next to him. Also in Crash Terrence Howard is here. Don Cheadle,Brendan Fraser, er, Ryan Phillipe also from Crash. You, you know what, actually, you know what would be easier? Raise your hand if you were not in Crash! But all the films this year, er, that have been nominated are, are excellent films. They deal with racism, corruption, terrorism, and censorship. It's why we go to the movies, to escape!I'll tell you the movies that do very well, they're remaked. King Kong, they made that a couple of times, and this time, smash hit. War of the W orlds, remake, tremendous. Walk the line, er, it's Ray, with white people, remakes See, Jimmie, I know. But I have to say I'm from New York and I've been out here a week and I have had a great time. I really mean that. And um, a lot of people say that this town is too liberal, out of touch with mainstream America, an atheisticpleasure dome , a modern day beachfront stardom and camauro.A moral black hole where innocence is obliterated in an endless orgy of sexual gratification and greed. I don't really have a joke here, I er, I justthought you should know a lot of people are saying that. Well, I have been to the parties, there you go. Now you are talking!Obviously one last thing I want to mention, the elephant in the room. Er, the movie that everybody was talking about this year, of course we are talking about Brokeback Mountain. Er, I have no problems with gay themes. Um, there were a lot of them this year, let's face facts, I mean for god's sakes, the boxing movie was called Cinderella Man, I mean, there is a lot gay themes. I just felt the Brokeback tarnishes the noble western tradition, rugged men, who represent the heterosexual ideal. Um, I'm sorry I just feel like there is nothing remotely gay about the classic Hollywood westerns.Mind if I look at you Winchester? It's real pretty.Nice, awful nice.Suppose if I tangle with him I'll have to take you all on too.Oh, I'll have you spread eagle on a wagon wheel. But remember whatever happens, this is strictly between you and me, and the horse. Right? I don't know why you thought you had to come in to say goodbye.Good bye that I have in mind will take a little more room than we have in here.Yeah, Yeah, that's how they used to make them, not really sure what my point was about that. Er, I'll say this, Charlton Heston is cut. Guylooks like he has been lifting 20 commandments. Um, a lot of times for the Oscars, people aren't quite sure how the presenters come out, how the order's determined, so tonight we're gonna try something a little bit different. Er, we're going to be introducing the presenters in order of how talented they are. No? 说获奖的英语作文
说获奖的英语作文Title: My Journey to Winning an Award。
Winning an award is a culmination of dedication, perseverance, and a lot of hard work. It's a recognition that validates one's efforts and fuels the passion to continue striving for excellence. Allow me to share my personal journey to winning an award and the lessons I've learned along the way.It all began with a dream – a dream to make a difference, to leave a mark in my chosen field. Armed with determination and fueled by passion, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth. I immersed myself in my craft, honing my skills, and pushing the boundaries of my capabilities. The road to success was not without its challenges. There were moments of doubt, setbacks, and obstacles that threatened to derail my progress. But with each hurdle, Iemerged stronger and more resilient. I learned to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success, a lesson in disguise that propelled me forward. As I continued to strive for excellence, my efforts began to bear fruit. My work caught the attention of peers and mentors, earning accolades and recognition along the way. But the ultimate validation came when I was nominated for the prestigious [Name of the Award] – a recognition reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication in their field. The nomination alone was a humbling experience, a testament to the years of hard work and sacrifices. But it also ignited a fire within me – a burning desire to prove that I was worthy of such an honor. I poured my heart and soul into my work, leaving no stone unturned in my pursuit of perfection. The day of the award ceremony arrived, and anticipation hung in the air like a palpable force. As the names were called and the envelopes were opened, I held my breath, scarcely daring to hope. And then, in a surreal moment that seemed to suspend time itself, my name was announced as the winner of the [Name of the Award].A wave of emotions washed over me – joy, gratitude, disbelief. It was a moment I would never forget, a culmination of years of hard work and unwavering determination. But amidst the celebration, there was also a profound sense of humility – a recognition that I stood on the shoulders of giants, supported by the unwavering love and encouragement of family, friends, and mentors.Winning the award was not just a personal triumph but a shared victory, a testament to the power of collaboration and community. It was a reminder that no man is an island – that behind every success story lies a network of support and inspiration. As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The reward of a thing well done is to have done it." Winning the award is certainly a great honor, but the true reward lies in the journey itself – inthe growth, the learning, and the memories that will last a lifetime. In conclusion, winning the [Name of the Award] has been a transformative experience, a milestone that marks the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. But it is also a beginning – a springboard to even greater heights and achievements. I am grateful for the recognition, humbled by the support, and inspired to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible.Thank you.。
