ASince many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious(好奇的) to know what you usually do in a typical week, how you can get along with your fellow students, and so on. These are the questions I want to discuss with you today.First, let’s talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures it’s very imp ortant for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isn’t enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. In a typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take .The discussion section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework In large universities graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion sections. If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, you ’ll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than non-science majors do. On the other hand, pepople who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do1. The main purpose of this text is___A. to help the students to learn about university lifeB. to persuade the students to attend lecturesC. to encourage the students to take part in discussionD.to advise the students to choose proper majors2. We can learn from the passage that university professors___A. spend about 5 hours on lectures each week.B. must join the students in the discussion sectionsC. prefer to use textbooks in their lecturesD. require the students to read beyond the textbooks3. A discussion section does NOT include___.A. working under the guidance of university professorsB. talking over what the students have read about the coursesC. discuss the problems related t o the students’ homeworkD. raising questions about what a professor has said in a lecture4. Why is it important to write down what the professor said in the lectures?A .because it is very importantB .because there is different information from the textbooksC .because the information in the lecture is very importantD. because they can get good informationBPassport Control(护照验证处)If you are arriving at London Heathrow Airport and are not transferring to another flight outside Britain or Northern Ireland, you must pass through Passport Control and Customs immediately after leaving your plane. Erosion occurs if a largearea of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers. The rain and winds may gradually wash away, or blow away, much of the topsoil. When this happens, crops of wheat or corn become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well. If erosion continues, it will turn good land into a desert. In the past, when erosion appeared, farmers sometimes moved to a new place to farm. Sometimes they could not move, but continued to try to grow food in the unhealthy soil. This caused them to sink into poverty. Soon some people realized that there was little rich, fertile soil in the world, government began to try to stop erosion. One of the first experiments to stop erosion began in the United States in 1933. The experiment was carried out in the area of the Tennessee River. Floods and had farming in this area had ruined(毁坏)land that had once been rich. As a result, most of the people living around the Tennessee River were very poor. The government built big dams across the river and stored the water for use during the dry season when there was no rain. The government workers also helped farmers to fertilize their soil and to learn new farming methods which could stop erosion. At the beginning, the farmers were not interested. But soon, good healthy crops began to appear on the land where new methods where used. Ten years after the extremely prosperous, the great success of this experiment had led similar projects in the other parts of the world.13.The word ―erosion‖ in the first paragraph means _______.A.the clearing of trees B.excessive(极度)use of the landC.the destruction of crops D.gradual loss of topsoil14.The passage tells us that erosion is a problem which .A.first began in the United States in 1933B.occurs mainly in river areasC.affects many parts of the worldD.is becoming more and more serious15.In the second paragraph, ―to sink into poverty‖ means.A.to lose topsoil in erosionB.to become weaker and weaker until nothing grows wellC.to become very poorD.to turn into a desert16.The main purpose of this passage is to tell people .A.how erosion occursB.the importance of using new farming methodsC.something can be done to prevent erosionD.the serious outcomes(后果)of erosionEThe central government will pour billions of yuan into special projects to help meet the country’s energy-saving targets. Local officials are also about to come under increased pressure to toe the government line to meet the targets, otherwise their political futures could be in jeopardy.A top official from the National Development and Reform Commission reaffirmed China’s commitment to cutting energy use and emissions when making a report to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress yesterday.―We’re facing a very vital situation to cut energy use,‖ Ma Kai, the NDRC minister said. ―If we don’t fasten our pace, it will be difficult to meet the targets this year.‖Ma said the central government would also issue compulsory energy consumption standards for 22 products such as steel, cement, caustic soda and thermal power by the end of the year. NDRC figures show that the country’s energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 2.78 percent in the first six months from the same period a year earlier. However, the government has set the target of reducing energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20 percent between 2006 and 2010, about an annual fall of 4 percent. But it fell only 1.33 perc ent last year from 2005. In addition, official figures also show that SO2 emissions dropped 0.88 percent to 12.63 million tons in the first half of the year. The minister blamed some local officials for dragging the rest of the country down in not meeting the targets. He said the assessment of officials in many places still focused too much on their performance in economic growth, and many cities and counties still lacked concrete plans tocut energy consumption. Ma said we had paid too much to economic growth and serious consequences are revealing themselves.17. The underlined sentence in paragraph 1 means ―________________‖.A. their families would be healthyB. their futures would be brightC. their futures would be in dangerD. their jobs would be necessary18. The Chinese government will pour billions of yuan into special projects to _____ .A. help reduce energy use and emissionsB. enlarge investmentC. improve the living conditionsD. balance the income between the poor and the rich19. From the passage, we can infer that _______________.A. the government only focused on the economic growthB. some local officials could have done more for cutting energy use and emissionsC. some local officials would not focus on the economic growthD. SO2 emissions increased in the first half of the year20. What caused the government to face a very vital situation to cut energy use?A. The assessment of officials.B. About 80 percent of all public-transport passengers worldwide are carried by buses. The bus is a very efficient mode of transport, being cheap, flexible, comfortable and, in many cases, tailored to the needs of users both in terms of capacity and speed. Buses operate in mixed traffic, and are easy to put in service. From an economic, environmental and social point of view, the bus remains the best solutionto the problem of achieving balanced and environmentally-friendly urban development. Indeed, the bus is the only mode of public transpor t in many of the world‟s cities, and plays a key supporting role in cities with rail transport.Over the past decades, increased use of roads by private cars has contributed to terrible traffic problems, affecting the speed of buses as well, and hence their service quality, reliability, energy consumption, and economy. In such circumstances, the efficiency and performance of buses depends heavily on special lanes. V arious forms are possible----from a mere painted mark on the road to more expensive variants such as elevated lanes, movable barriers, and “bus locks”.A related trend is to look beyond vehicle technology alone and to consider the wider system, of which buses are a part, such as the infrastructure(基础设施)and other operational aspects of city. This i s commonly known and promoted as the “bus-system approach”. Other key innovations(革新) include clean engines, alternative fuels, and guidance devices. In terms of the designs of buses, much of what has happened to light rail can be transferred to them, including the shapes of the vehicles themselves. The energy consumption of a bus per passenger is one-sixth that of a car, and buses are only responsible for about 5% of the CO2 emissions generated by vehicles at present.9. From this passage we learn that .A. buses are the most environmentally-friendly of all motorized vehiclesB. buses were first used more than a century agoC. most passengers prefer trains to busesD. a bus has a much larger capacity than any other vehicle10. What has affected the service quality of buses?A. Unsuitable infrastructure.B. Private cars.C. The increasing population of cities.D. Very rapid urban development.11. Which of the following is an approach to improving bus service?A. Improving the speed of buses.B. Reducing the number of private cars.C. Setting up special lanes for buses.D. Increasing the number of buses.12. From the passage we can infer that in the future .A. there will be more buses than todayB. bus engines will need no powerC. buses will be replaced by other means of transportD. the appearance of buses will changeDIt‟s not a particular brain region that makes someone smart or not smart. Nor is it the strength and speed of the connections throughout the brain or such features as total brain volume. Instead, new research shows, it‟s the connections between very specific areas of the brain that determine intelligence.“General intelligence actually relies on a specific network inside the brain, and this is the connections between the gray matter, or cell bodies, and the white matter, or connecting fibers between neurons(神经元),”said Jan Glascher, lead author of a paper appearing in this week‟s issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The results w eren‟t entirely unexpected, said Keith Young, vice chairman at Texas A﹠M Health Science Center College of Medicine in Temple, but “it proves that good communication between various parts of brain are very important for this general intelligence.”“People n oticed a long time ago that, in general, people who are good test-takers did well in a lot of different subjects,”explained Young. “If you‟re good in mathematics, you‟re also usually good in English. Researchers came up with this idea that this represented a kind of overall intelligence.”Hoping to learn more, some experts located 241 patients who had some sort of their lesions (损害). They then diagrammed the location of their lesions and had them take IQ testes. “We took patients who had parts of their brain damaged, tested them on intelligence to see where they were good and where they were bad, then we connected those scores across all the patients with the location of the brain lesions,”Glascher explained. “That way, you can know the areas that are associated with reduced performance on these tests, which means these areas are really important for general intelligence.”“These s tudies suggest results based on the absence of brain tissue (组织),”added PaulSanberg, famous professor and director of the University of South Florida Center. “It allows them to systemize and find areas important to intellingence.”13. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. General Intelligence Depend on Brain V olumeB. Scientists Explain Mysteries of IntelligenceC. Science Research Done on Human BrainD. Brain Lesions Cause Patients Stupid14.According to Keith Young, we can infer that .A. the parts of brain are working smooth on their ownB. a person good at maths has obstacles learning languagesC. overall intelligence will make a person successfulD. Jan Glascher‟s article really shocks the world15. Why did experts locate 241 patients with some sort of brain lesions?A. To diagram the location of their lesions.B. To take IQ tests to the patients.C. To know more about the secrets of intelligence.D. To take better care of the patients.16.From the diagram, the experts concluded that .A. the absence of brain tissue will influence intelligenceB. the brain lesions can improve the performanceC. patients with brain lesions will get a high scoreD. Some areas totally determine the ability of intelligenceEToday about 70 countries use Daylight Saving Time(DST). Daylight Saving was first introduced during World War I in Australia. During the world wars, DST was used for the late summers beginning January 1917 and 1942, and the full summers beginning September 1942 and 1943.In 1967, Tasmania experienced a drought. The State Government introduced one hour of daylight saving that summer as a way of saving power and water. Tasmanians liked the idea ofdaylight saving and the Tasmanian Government has declared daylight saving each summer since 1968. Persuaded by the Tasmanian Government, all states except two passed a law in 1971, for a test use of daylight saving. In 1972, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria joined Tasmania for regular daylight saving, but Queensland did not do so until 1989.Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia have had irregular plans, often changing their dates due to politics or festivals. For example, in 1992, Tasmania extended daylight saving by an extra month while South Australia began extending daylight saving by two weeks for the Adelaide Festival. Special daylight saving plans were made during the sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The differences in daylight saving in Australia continue to cause serious problems in transport and many other social activities. It also reduces the number of hours in the working day that are common to all centers in the country. In particular, time differences along the east coast cause major difficulties, especially for the broadcasters of national radio and television.17.Daylight Saving Time was introduced in Tasmania ________.A. to save water and electricityB. to support government officialsC. to pass a special law in the stateD. to stop the drought in 196718.According to the text, which state was the last to use DST?A. Victoria.B. Queensland.C. South Australia.D. New South Wales.19.What can we learn about DST in some Australian states?A. It lasts for two weeks.B. It is not used in festivals.C. Its plan was changed in 2000.D. It doesn't have fixed dates.20.What do we know about the use of DST from the last paragraph?A. There exist some undesirable effects.B. Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family. Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehen sion level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring. If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. Thi s will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer)are good options. The most important thing is to pi ck a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story de velopment to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.Another great way to keep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve anddiscuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college. Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!-from 21st Century(January 21, 2009)(B)Ambition is a necessary quality in life. It is the force which drives us on to use whatever talent we have got. If we haven’t got some degree of ambition, these talents will not be used for our own and other’s benefit. We must continually want to be better than we are. Without ambition we are just jellyfish that flop through life. We only react to events; we don’t try to control them.Ambition, however, can have several defects.First of all it can be unrealistic. We may not be able to see the limits of our own abilities, so we do ambitious things that are completely beyond us. Our career masters can see our good qualities and our limitations objectively. They may tell us that we haven’t th e ability to deal with people and would make good businessmen. We refuse to take their evaluation. We keep on trying. Many years and many disappointments later we are forced to accept their judgment. But what a waste of time our ill-founded ambition has caused us!Secondly, our ambition can be too concentrated. We devote our attention to one narrow aim, such as getting distinctions in our science subjects. Everything that may draw us away from this aim is cut out of our lives. In the end we get our distinctions. But what damage we have caused ourselves in the process! We are isolated beings who only care about a particular examination. And we probably won’t make good scientists. We lack the breadth of view necessary for success in higher studies.Thirdly, our ambition can be limited to lifeless objectives. We want to gain money, or power, or membership of some circles. Persons who feel inferior try to make up by seeking the respect of others through possessions of these artificial signs of worth.Fourthly, our ambition may be self-centered. Instead of directing some of our ambition towards community improvement we may exploit members of the community in the interests of self-advancements. In later life we may be ambitious for the success of our children but we regard this success as only a further mark of our own success.Ambition is necessary in the lives of individuals---necessary for their own improvement and for the improvement of the community in which they live. But, like all blind forces, it must be directed if it is not to cause disaster. It must be tightly controlled by the head and the heart. Otherwise ambition may demand too high a price in terms of human qualities.1.improve2. benefiting3. enable4. lacking5. greater6. reputation/fame7. selfish8.others’9. Conclusion 10.master。

AA programmer and an engineer are sitting next to each other on a long flight from Los Angeles to New York. The programmer leans over to the engineer and asks if he would like to play a fun game. The engineer just wants to take a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The programmer persists and explains that the game is really easy and has a lot of fun. He explains, “I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job.One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows, you can get at least 5cm taller!”At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony(痛苦) just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that justdoes not exist in reality. No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost.In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.6. Young Graduates Face a Different Situation in Job-huntCThe day my fiancé fell to his death, it started to snow, just like the bottom hadn’t fallen out ofmy world when he fell off the roof. His body, when I found it, was lightly covered with snow. It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it pile up.One morning, I shuffled(拖着脚步走) downstairs and was surprised to see a snowplow(扫雪机) clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman shoveling my walk. I dropped to my knees, crawled through the living room, and back upstairs so those good Samaritans would not see me. I was mortified. My first thought was, how would I ever repay them? I didn’t have the strength to brush my hair, let alone shovel someone’s walk. Before Jon’s death, I took pride in the fact that I rarely asked for help or favors. I defined myself by my competence and independence. How could I respect myself if all I did was sit on the couch everyday and watch the snow fall?Learning how to receive the love and support that came my way wasn’t easy. Friends cooked for me and I cried because I couldn’t even help them set the table. “I’m not usually this lazy,” I swept. Finally, my friend Kathy sat down with me and said, “Mary, cooking for you is not a burden. It makes me feel good to be able to do something for you.”Over and over, I heard similar words of comfort from the people who supported me during those dark days. One very wise man told me, “You are not doing nothing. Being fully open to your grief may be the hardest work you will ever do.”In many ways I have changed for the better. I have been surprised to learn that there is incredible freedom that comes from facing one’s worst fear and walking away whole.11. What made the author feel sad?A. Her fiancé’s sudden death.B. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes i t’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge. It is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image inclu des the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!4. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can becombined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce would be lower than if there were a balanced spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds (超出) the number of deaths then as a total population increases proportion of the workforce declines.Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are insufficient numbers of young people entering it to replace those who are leaving it. In that situation the population is top-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate. The age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue (税收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.12.In the passage “labor force”is defined as ___________.A.people who are available to work and earn incomeB.self-employed people onlyC.people who are looking for an employmentD.employers who create job opportunities13.The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.A.a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforceB.a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforceC.the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforceD.the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution,14.When a population is said to be aging,___________.A.there are more people retiring than those entering the workforceB.the birth rate must be growingC.there should be an oversupply of workforceD.There are more people entering the workforce than those retiring15.The population which is top-heavy with older people ___________ of a country. A.leads to the high rate of unemploymentB.results in low tax on the workforce membersC.affects employees’ incomesD.places pressure on the economy1--15 DCB CDCD DBBC ABAD。

Over the next several decades, hundreds of millions of new entrants(加入者)to the middle class will want not only the things-but also the experiences-that money can buy.Indian call-center employers, Russian engineers, Chinese middle managers, and Brazilian salespeople are already searching the web for information on trips. They want to see Paris from the Eiffel Tower, relax in the Maldives, and play blackjack in Las Vegas. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, international tourist visits are expected to double soon, from roughly 800 million in 2008 to 1.6 billion by 2020. However, only so many people can visit a particular building or beach in a given year. Where will all the other tourists go? This skyrocketing demand for travel will lead to a “scarcity of place” and to three probable market responses: First, most tourism-related prices, such as hotel room rates in popular cities, will continue toescalate as demand outstrips supply. Second, people’s waiting to visit certain places will become commonplace. Finally, surprising prices and decade4-long waiting lists will cause the creation and expansion of tourist attractions in both developed and developing countries.4.What is mainly talked about in passage?A.Wealthy people’s wish for travel.B.Middle class people in different counties.C.Problems of international travel in the future.D.The way to search the web for travel information.5.We know from the passage that Brazilian salespeople .A.are rich people B.belong to middle classC.like travel most D.use the Internet often6.The underlined word “scarcity” probably means .A.growth B.supply C.popularity D.shortage7.It can be inferred that in the future .A.people will develop more tourist attractionsB.more people will travel by rocketC.the number of the tourists will reduceD.hotel room rates will rise everywhereCThere’s a widespread perception(观念)in the United States that a university degree is the key to success. But a growing number of educators now say there are other possibilities, especially for students who might not succeed at the university level. This is not a traditional classroom. At the apprentice (学徒)program run by the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union in the state of Maryland, Travis Strawderman and other students make money while they learn. “It’s completely changed my life around,” he said. “I’ve been able to pay off all my debts. I can say I’m actually responsible enough to have my own family.”Strawderman’s five-year program teaches him technical skills free of charge. He says he considered university, but it didn’t interest him. Economics Professor Robert Lerman says Strawderman is not alone. “A lot of people are bored in high school,” Lerman stated. “They leavehigh school because they are bored. They want to do something besides sitting in a classroom.”Lerman says the education system in the United States is too focused on pushing students to attend university. “What we’re doing now is we’re saying unless you learn in this way you don’t really have the chance for a rewarding career,” he said. But Chad Aldeman, an analyst, says studies show the longer students stay in school the better chance they have at having a high paying and stable career. “If you only are a high school graduate your wages are going to drop over you Lifetime-as opposed to a college degree,” he said. “The college is really an insurance policy against unemployment and against low wages”. 8.Where does Travis Strawdeman learn?A.In a university. But roses are also native to other areas including northwest Africa, Europe and the United States. In 1986, Congress chose the rose as American’s national flower. Technically, Congress and President Ronald Reagan declared it the “national floral emblem(国花).” Whatever the name, the decision did not smell sweet to supporters of other popular flowers. Some people say roses are difficult to grow. But you have a good chance of success if you start with a few suggestions from experts. You should plant your roses where they can getsunshine for about six hours on bright days. You can buy roses from a garden center or by mail order. You can buy potted roses, also known as container roses, or bare-root plants. Each kind has its fans. Some gardeners say potted roses are easier to plant. They say the roots develop better. But Jeffrey Dinslage, an expert, points out that bare-root roses come without soil. So they weigh less to transport.Another expert advises getting bare-root roses as close to planting time as you can.. If they arrive before you are ready to plant them, make sure the packing material is moist. Keep the plants in a cool, dark place. The resting plants have no leaves but still need water. When growing roses, the soil should feel moist deep down. Watering should be done in the morning. But do not water too much. People often ask Jeffrey Dinslage about unhealthy discoloration on rose leaves. He says the spots are usually caused by too much water. After heavy rains or too much watering, he advises pulling away mulch, the substance used to protect the roots, to improve the quality of the soil, temporarily from around the roots. This will help dry the soil. 11.From the first paragraph, we know that in the United States .A.all the people like rosesB.there are a lot of national flowersC.some roses don' t smell sweetD.there are some other popular flowers12.How many kinds of roses can you buy according to the passage?A.One. ALast year, I lived in Chile for half a year. I lived with a Chilean family and had the responsibilities of any Chilean teenager. I had good days and bad days I didn’t understand.Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp. When I arrived there, I was scared. It was so different from what I was used to. There were lots of dogs on the streets, and there was no downtown, few smoothly paved streets, and little to do for entertainment. Rain was not seen very often, earthquakes and windstorms were frequent.I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was only able to communicate and needed one person to whom I could explain my shock. I couldn’t speak the thoughts in my head and there were so many. Most exchange students experience this like me. Culture shock presents itself in everything from increased aggression (敌对心理) towards the people to lack of appetite. I was required to overcome all difficulties. As time passed, everything changed. I began to forget words in English and to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not depending on expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. And I took math, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy. But the sacrifices were nothing compared to the gain. I learned how to accept and to succeed in another culture. If you plan to visit the Shanghai Expo this summer, China Pavilion is a must-see area for you.China Pavilion, which is called Oriental Crown(东方之冠), is located at the center of the Expo site. Standing 63 meters tall, the China Pavilion takes the shape of an emperor’s crown, with the upper layers larger than the lower ones. Covering 160,000 square meters in floor space, the pavilion consists of a national hall and a regional hall. Construction on the China Pavilion began on December 18, 2007. The design of the China Pavilion was picked from a total of 344 designs put forward by Chinese from around the world. The pavilion possesses both traditional and modern features, which helps develop the theme of the 2010 Expo: “ Better City, Better Life”. For example, it is red in appearance, which contains the elements of traditional Chinese culture, and it is green indoors, with the use of energy-saving techniques. The Shanghai World Expo is expected to attract70 million visitors from across the globe. It is estimated that 400,000 people will visit the Expo and its 140 pavilions every day during the period, but the China Pavilion is only able to receive about one tenth of the total. How to accommodate so many people in the pavilion remains a tough task. Luckily, the China Pavilion is built as a permanent landmark.During the Expo, the main structure will be used for an exhibition based on the theme of “ Chinese wisdom in urban development” by explaining the values of harmony, nature and spirit. The three-story pavilion has three sections. The top floor’s “Footprint of the East” will show some of the changes in Chinese cities. There, you can see a film which shows how Chinese cities have changed, especially in the past 30 years. According to Lu Chuan, director of the film, the scenery is like something from Lord of the Rings. On the second floor, “Journey of Wisdom” will explain China’s four great inventions. And the ground’s “Blossoming City” will display scenes from cities of the future.6. Which of the following words can be used to describe the China Pavilion?A. TinyB. RoundC. Exotic(异国情调的)D. China Pavilion will probably continue to be open to visitors after the Expo is overC. you can continue to visit the other pavilions after the Expo is overD. some foreign friends took part in the designs of the China Pavilion8. On the second floor, you can _________.A. enjoy a film about the changes of cities in ChinaB. learn what Shanghai looked like in the 1920sC. find out how paper was inventedD. see how Chinese cities will look like in the futureCDisposing of the garbage we produce every day is a major problem in cities around the world. In the United States, over 160 million tons of garbage is produced every year. Ten percent is recycled, ten percent is burned, and the rest is put in landfills. But finding land for new landfills isbecoming more difficult.A city that has solved this problem in an unusual way is Machida in Tokyo. They have developed a totally new way of dealing with garbage. The key to the operation is that people should work together. Families must divide their garbage into six groups:1. garbage that can be easily burned, such as kitchen and garden trash2. garbage that does n’t burn easily, such as plastic tools and plastic toys3. products that are poisonous or that cause pollution, such as batteries4. bottles and glass containers that can be recycled5. metal containers that can be recycled6. large items, such as furniture and bicyclesThe items in Groups 1 to 5 are collected on different days. Large items are only collected upon request. Then the garbage is taken to a centre that looks like a clean new office building or hospital. Inside the centre, special equipment is used to sort and deal with garbage. Almost everything can be reused: garden or kitchen trash becomes fertilizer; garbage that can burn is burned to produce electricity; metal containers and bottles are recycled; and old furniture, clothing, and other useful items are cleaned, repaired, and resold cheaply or given away. The work provides employment for the disabled and gives them a chance to learn new skills.Nowadays, officials from cities around the world visit Machida to see whether they can use some of these ideas and techniques to solve their own garbage problems.9. Each year people in the U.S.A. have to find places to put in _______ million tons of garbage.A.160B.128C.16D.3210. George’s family has the following garbage: wooden chairs, empty tins and branches. Into which group should he put the garbage?A. Group 6, Group 5, Group 1.B. Group 1, Group 3, Group 2.C. Group 6, Group 5, Group 2.D. Group 6, Group 4, Group 1.11. From the text we know that ________ .A. those who are working at the garbage disposal centre are disabled persons.B. without people’s cooperation, the garbage disposal project would be a failure.C. the items in Group1 and Group6 are not collected on the same day.D. the garage is taken to a clean new office building for disposal.DIt is time for students to sell such things as chocolate bars and greeting cards to raise money for their school, class or club. It is inevitable that they will knock on your door and you will easily hand over your cash for overpriced items that you really do not want. That is okay, though, because there are many reasons why children should be allowed to raise money for their schools and clubs.Fundraising(募集资金)is a great way to help children learn social skills. It is not easy to go up to a complete stranger and ask him for his money. They have to nicely ask for help, show the interested buyer what they have to offer and explain how it will help them in school. If someone refuses to buy an item, that child has to take the failure in stride(不特别费力地), and that is a learning lesson as well.Students can learn how to deal with money by fundraising. Of course, it might seem safer for us to take charge of our chi ldren’s earnings from their fundraising before it is turned into the school. However, by making them keep track of it, count it, and make sure everyone pays the right amount, they are learning an important lesson. Dealing with money is important to know about when they are older.Fundraising helps improve their schools. It is the children’s school. They have to learn there and grow there. Why not let them help in making it a better place?Fundraising allows for more life experiences for the child. The raised money is used towards things like parties, trips, or for the music club to go to see a Broadway play. The children receive the rewards for their hard work at raising the money. Without fundraising, these field trips and special school memories would be missed. In a word, fundraising helps children a lot in many ways.12. The underlined word “inevitable” in the first paragraph means “_______”.A. 不可能的B. 不恰当的C. 不可避免的D. 不现实的13.One of the important indications that children are grown up is that __________.A. children can deal with moneyB. children learn to care for othersC. children make a date with friends of the other sex1—15 DCABC DBC BAB CACA。

AOne Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we’d have for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day. Sunday couldn’t have been more different — clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still -25°C.Six of us drove to the coast. It was t he first time we’d been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling — more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We’d been told that then they were nursing their chicks (刚孵出的幼雏) and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose (摆姿势) for photos. Before heading back, we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically (明显地) since our last visit. We see ourselves on a long trip that goes across the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we think in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing , of cattle feeding on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, or row upon row of corn and wheat, of flat lands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, condemning(谴责)the minutes for loitering(虚度)— waiting, waiting, waiting for the station."When we reach the station, that will be it!”we cry. "When I’m 38." "When I buy a new 450SL Mercdes Benz!""When I put the last kid through college.""When I have paid off the debt!" "When I get a promotion.""When I reach the age of rement, I shall live happily ever after!"Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all.The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us."Relish(appreciate) the moment" is a good motto, actually it isn’t the burdens of today that drive man mad. It is the regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more icecream, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. Then the station will come soon enough.8. Why does the author describe the mental picture?A. To lead us into a perfect world.B. To let people enjoy the scenery.C. To introduce an actual trip of his.D. To compare it to our lif e’s journey.9. How do people feel when they’re on their trip?A. Puzzled.B. Happy.C. Relaxed.D. Impatient.10. We must be careful of the two thieves: regret and fear.C. Regret and fear stop us from enjoying our present life.D. We’re frequently challenged by the two: regret and fear.11. Why does the author write the passage?A. To teach us a good lesson.B. To tell us the right attitude to life.C. To advise us to forget our worries.D. To stop us wandering along the aisles.DDoctors’ moonlighting is becoming popular in hospitals around China. It h as not only raised a lot of heated discussions in the media, but also caught the attention of the central government in Beijing. On December 26, a spokesman of the Ministry of Health stressed that the ministry was firmly against doctors’ moonlighting, wh ile strict regulations should be applied to doctors takingpart-time jobs, the Xinhua News Agency reported.Last year, the Ministry sent out a notice to a variety of health organizations to speed up the reform of their personnel (人事)system. According to the notice, medical organizations can hire medical experts as part-time doctors but such activities should take place under the hospital’s management and regulations(规定).As for moonlighting--meaning that the doctor provides medical service without the permission of the original hospital--such activity goes against China’s Practicing Doctor Law, Xinhua reported. In China, doctors used to be controlled by hospitals and they could work for only one hospital. However, as China’s medical personnel system reform developed, it has been recognized that medical human resources, just like human resources in other areas, should be shared by the whole society. But on the other hand, doctors’ taking part-time jobs should follow the relative regulations applied in the medical field.First of all, they should follow relative government laws and regulations. They should also follow the rules and regulations set by the medical organizations they work for. In addition, they should pay taxes for their income from the part-time jobs. What matters most is that they should first finish their regular jobs as required and be responsible for patients to ensure qualified and safe medical treatment.12. What is the greatest difference between moonlighting and taking part-time jobs?A. Doctors can earn more money by moonlighting than by taking part-time jobs.B. Doctors pay fewer taxes for the money made by moonlighting than by takingpart-time jobs.C. Taking part-time jobs is permitted by hospitals while moonlighting is-againstthe present regulations.D. truck over mountain roads is not the usual way that a schoolteacher begins her day—especially if she is a preschool teacher. But Mrs Beth Miller does this five days every week. Her unusual schoolhouse on wheels is actually a truck. The back of the truck has been made into a classroom in order to carry the advantages of modern education to remote areas of the state of West V irginia. In many rural areas of this state it is impossible for small children to go to regular schools because of the many hills and valleys of Appalachian Mountains. The purpose of the schoolhouse on wheels project is to develop basic skills and social behavior in children three to five years of age. This is done through games, exercises, toys and simple handcrafts. The schoolhouse on wheels concept also teaches the young children to recognize 300 to 400 words on the printed page. This is a great advantage in helping the pupils to learn to read when they begin regular school. In its three-year history the project has helped about 350 children in an area made up of five counties, an area of 20, 000 square kilometers. The schoolhouse on wheels is part of the Appalachian Educational Laboratory, a research effort paid for by the government.Besides the mobile classroom, other parts of the program include lessons by television and visits to the homes of the students. The technique is very effective, and one teacher can do the work of seven in a traditional educational system. As a result the program costs about 50% less than the regular kindergarten. All these advantages of the schoolhouse on wheels have made both parents and school officials happy.West Virginia plans to increase the program and to include it in the public schoolsystem so that more than 4, 500 preschool children can have this valuable learning experience.4.Mrs Beth Miller usually _____.A.walks to begin her workB.drives a large truck to begin her workC.drives her car to the schoolD.carries the classroom to the school5.Children in have seen that pesticides(杀虫剂)now pollute soil, water and food, and that they have the power to make our rivers fishless and our gardens and woodlands silent and birdless.Man, however much he may like to pretend the opposite, is part of nature. Can he escape a pollution that is now so thoroughly spread throughout our world? We know that even single exposure to these chemicals, if the amount is large enough, can cause extremely severe poisoning. But this is not the major problem. The sudden illness or death of farmers, farm workers and others exposed to enough quantities of pesticides is very sad and should not happen. For the population as a whole, we must pay more attention to the delayed effects of taking in small amounts of the pesticides that unseeably pollute our world.Responsible public health officials have pointed out that the biological effects of chemicals are increasing in amount over long periods of time, and that the danger to the man may depend on the amount of the exposures received throughout his lifetime. For these very reasons people easilytake no notice of the danger. It is human nature to shake off what may seem to us a future disaster."Men are naturally most impressed by diseases which have obvious signs, " says a wise physician, Dr.Rene Dubos, "yet some of their worst enemies slowly come near them unnoticed."7.Which of the following can best summarize the first paragraph of this passage?A.Man has a responsibility to bear for what has happened to nature.B.Possibly man will escape the effects of environmental pollution.C.Pesticide-caused pollution may also kill people.D.Man acts as if he did not belong to nature.8.People do not give enough attention to the delayed effects of exposure to chemicals because .A.imited exposure to them does little harm to people's healthB.the present is more important to them than the futureC.humans are able to bear small amounts of poisoningD.the danger does not become seen clearly and immediately9.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.A person exposed to pesticides even once may get seriously poisoned.B.Birds are less sensitive to pesticides than humans.C.The effects of pesticides on humans do not last as long as on fish.D.Taking in small amounts of pesticides will not cause serious results.10.We can conclude from what Dr Dubos says that .A.people usually find hidden diseases difficult to deal withB.people fail to notice hidden dangers caused by pesticidesC.diseases with obvious signs are mostly easy to cureD.attacks by hidden enemies are likely to be deadlyDIn cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment.Supporters of rent control, argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects.Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled.As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any.According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city. Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics hold the opinion that an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people, keep their dignity.Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum.Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.Economic theory predict the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production rent control and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if "other things are equal" Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it.Economic do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.11.This passage shows that setting maximum rent may ______.A.encourage the construction of more apartmentsB.discourage the renting of apartments as homesC.reduce the shortage of apartmentsD.result in a shortage of apartments.12.From the passage, we can infer that rent control .A.is completely unnecessaryB.will likely bring about undesired resultsC.will bring positive effects in the long runD.is necessary under all circumstances13.The problem of unemployment may come up when ____ .A.he minimum wage is set too low B.the workers are unskilled C.the minimum wage is set too high D.people need low-paying jobs 14.This passage is mainly about economists' disagreement on .A.the effectiveness of government controlsB.- the urgency of getting rid of government controls.C.the relationship between supply and demandD.the possible results of government controls15.We can conclude from the passage that ______.A.the results of economic decisions can always be predictedB.predicting the results of economic decisions is something complicatedC.minimum wage can not protect employeesD.economists usually have the same prediction about an economic decision1—15 ADCBC ACDAB DBCDB。

AJoyce Yuan and her host familyAs I began to feel completely sick of the cold North American winter, spring break finally arrived! What made me even more excited was that we were going to Florida to enjoy the warm weather!Just imagine wearing short sleeves or a swimsuit under the hot Florida sun! Before the vocation started, we had a little episode at the airport. The alarm sounded when my host mom and I were walking through the security check. We were taken away to have further checks, but when they finally told us that we could go, we felt easy and amused. It was just because of the decorations on my pants and the tinfoil(锡纸) around my host mom’ chewing gum! -Just as a reminder, no overly fashionable pants or tinfoil on a plane!Of course, I had a lot of first experiences during this special vacation. Since eight of us were living in a house, we had to share a room with my 4-year-old host sister. She is tiny compared to me, but she took up about two thirds of the bed. Moreover, because I was not used to sleeping in the same room with others, I was afraid of waking up and hardly slept at all.Luckily, except for all that, everything went really well. My host family were really warm-hearted, and they wanted me to try everything new. With their “persuasion”, I was “forced” to go boating, which turned out to be really fun. We went through some canals and I saw manatees(海牛) and dolphins with my own eyes for the very first time! When we finally landed in Wisconsin again, everyone looked brown and full of energy!1. Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor Castle TourDIn the computer age, most of us take a broadband Internet connection for granted. Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s c onnections are many times faster than those in the early days. Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago. And the files are much bigger too. There’s a catch, of course: You have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you. And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the diff iculty of bringing Internet access to remote locations. In cities and suburbs, it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries. Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely (稀疏地) populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense. But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere. Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines. Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables (光纤电缆) promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.Still, the “last mil e” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If therapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication (迹象), it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.13. The underlined part “a catch” (in Paragraph 2) probably means “_____”.A. a rare challengeB. a desirable planC. an efficient deviceD. a hidden problem14. What can we know from the third paragraph?A. Internet connection has not been popular in most cities.B. Internet service providers care about rural customers.C. Computer is popular in developing countries.D. It is hard to bring Internet access to users in remote areas.15. Paragraph 4 mainly tells us that technological advancements _____.A. make TV and telephone available everywhereB. bring great change to people’s everyday lifeC. make it possible for more people to use the InternetD. bring faster Internet connections to users16. What may eventually settle the “last mile” problem?A. The broadband connection’s getting faster.B. More and more Internet users.C. more and more Internet connections.D The rapid progress in cell phone technology.EMusic died here last spring, or rather, it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored the importance of music and drama as part of the high-school curriculum. The committee decided that teaching students how to take a standardized test is more important than a curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts as well as academics. Because the school system is running out of funding, it needs to make sure that students pass the mastery test or even more money will be lost. If students fail the state standardized test, it is not the fault of drama and music classes –they are failing because the academic classes are not sufficient. It is painful to think of how many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing instruments because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford private music lessons, and many potential musicians and artists may not find their calling if they are not exposed to it in school. The fact that the school committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment will certainly make some students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle will continue.Teaching for a test does not shape students into complete, well- rounded people. It blocks the natural sense to create and express feelings through art –there is more to life than the analytical thinking that math and English provide. What happens after a test? Sure, a student might graduate, but they will have limited knowledge – certainly not a good preparation for the real world.17. Music and drama are not included in the high- school curriculum mainly because ________.A. the school committee pays no attention to themB. the school is afraid of losing financial supportC. the students are not interested in both of themD. the state standardized test is more important18. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The sufficiency of the classes determines students’ performance in the mastery testB. Quite a few students are discouraged from music and art in today’ s school systemC. Students can be musicians and artists only if they can afford private music lessonsD. The school committee completely influences students’ attitude towards the arts19. We can learn that music and art can ______.A. motivate students in creativity and expressionB. make students round-shaped people in futureC. provide students with analytical thinkingD. prevent students graduating from high school20. The best title of the passage can be ______.A. Who K illed Music and Drama?B. Can Curriculum Go Without Music?C. Why is Music So Important?D. ASinging are the pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti. One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin. Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school principals in the country. ks**5uOver 70 % of Haitian population live below the poverty line with inadequate food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.“We are so cut off we have many difficulties,” comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books and other materials is practically impossible. Emile tries to encourage those around her to make use of all available resources. Her efforts are bearing fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to their children’s schooling and increase their own income by selling embroidery(刺绣) and other handicrafts. ks**5uRecent political instability has meant that the country has not invested in education for ten years. Enrolment(入学) is a mere 44 per cent and a little less than a half of those entering primary school finish it. Less than a third of these go on to secondary school. In rural areas it is not rare to find 17- and 18 year-olds in primary school. Beau-Roc has only 4 teachers for 260 pupils. Emile works constantly to improve her pupils’ environment. Under her direction, a local worker is now constructing a storehouse for the food delivered regularly by the World Food Programme. Not only is Emile’s salary too little, but she receives it irregularly. For her, transport is a real headache. She lives five kilometers away and has to take a privately-owned bus, costing more than she can afford.“The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly”, Emile comments. “With all the sacrifices and risks it requires, only those who are really cut out for teaching should do it.” Nevertheless, Emile loves her job. “I alw ays feel at home with the children and, the parents understand what I’m doing.”1. What theme is presented in this passage?A. Devotion to education.B. Poverty and hardship.C. Politics and childrenD. Love and beauty ks**5u2. Which of the following is extremely difficult for Beau-Roc primary school?A. Teaching the women how to make embroidery and other handicrafts.B. Persuading local women to care about their children’s education.C. Encouraging those around her to use those available resources.D. Finding chalk, school books and other materials.3. In the last paragraph, “those who are really cut out for teaching” are those who are ________.A. dismissed from teachingB. unfamiliar with teachingC. qualified for teachingD. cautious about teachingBLabor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce w ould be lower than if there were a balanced spread age distribution. In that situation the population istop-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate. ks**5uThe age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue (税收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.4.In the passage “labor force” is defined as ___________.A.people who are available to work and earn incomeB.self-employed people onlyC.people who are looking for an employment ks**5uD.employers who create job opportunities5.The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.A.a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforceB.a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforceC.the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforceD.the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution,6.When a population is said to be aging,___________.A.there are more people retiring than those entering the workforceB.the birth rate must be growingC.there should be an oversupply of workforceD.There are more people entering the workforce than those retiringC(1) Mr. Brown (the motorist)At about 9:20 p.m. on October 14th, I was driving along Market Road in the direction ofMidwick. I wanted to go to Sturham to collect my wife, who had been visiting some friends. I prepared to turn into Sturham Road, which was on my right. In the distance, I saw the lights of a car moving towards me but it was along way from me. I put out my hand to show that I was going to turn right. Then I started to turn slowly towards Sturham Road. Suddenly there was a loud noise on the passenger’s (near) side of the car. I stopped the car and got out. A motorcycle had hit my car. The motorcyclist had been thrown over the car. He was injured, so I ran to a shop to phone for help.(2) Mt. WhenI woke up, I was lying in a hospital in Market Road.(3) Mr. Lee (another motorcyclist) ks**5uAt about 9:10 p.m. on October 14th, I left my home in Midwick. Ten minutes later I was riding my motorcycle along Market Road. I was going to Newton. There was a motorcycle about 40 meters in front of me. It was not going very quickly. The man on it was riding near the curb (路边) but I was near the center of the road. The motorcyclist in front of me tried to turn to his right but there was no time. He hit the car and was injured. We would expect to find that Mr. Brown’s car was damaged on its ______ side.A. frontB. leftC. rightD. driver’sDAs any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. ks**5uLewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ate M M MDordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts t o control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there i s.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible.” Says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”11. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______ .A. show the relationship between parents and childrenB. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC. report on the findings of a studyD. give information about family problems12. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragrap h 3, Lewis means that middle children______ .A. have to help their parents to serve dinnerB. get the least attention from the familyC. are often kept away from the dinner tableD. find it hard to keep up with other children13. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______ .A. they are busy serving food to their childrenB. they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC. they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family14. Lewis research provides an answer to the question ______ .A. Why TV is important in family ks**5uB. why parents should keep good orderC. why children in small families seem to be quietD. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life15. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A. It is important to have the right food for children.B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C. AA “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blo g, and they can write about anything they like. There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year. However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products. At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, . He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it.One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. It involves much useful information for readers. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called “The Weblog Handbook”. It has been translated into four languages so far.Ms Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writ es about anything and everything----politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from online bank accounts. 1. The text is written mainly to ____.A. introduce an Internet computer Web site called “blog”B. introduce a way of reading on blogsC. tell readers about blogsD. tell readers how to write blogs2. From the text we can learn that blogs cover almost everything except ___.A. different ideasB. medical adviceC. advertisementsD. account codes3. According to this passage , which of the following is NOT true?A. Politicians don’t use blogs at allB. A lot of bloggers no longer write or read blogsC. Those who like to use blogs are mostly teenage girlsD. Dave Winer closed his “” because of money shortage4. The reason why Rebecca’s Pocket is still going strong is that ____.A. it was created by a womanB. it provides plenty of useful information and adviceC. it is about the history of booksD. it has editions in at least four different languagesBBeing able to multitask---doing several things at the same time---is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again. What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a s i g n i f i c a n t a m o u n t o f t i m e i n f r u i t l e s s e f f o r t s a s t h e y m u l t i t a s k.Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.Multitasking also affects young people’s performance at university and in the work place. When asked about their opinion of the effect of modern gadgets on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive response. However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive.Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later develop- ment of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.5. What does the underlined word “juggle” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. Want to buy.B. Take the place of.C. Use at the same time.D. Seek for information from.6. In Paragraph 3, the author points out that ________.A. family members do not eat at the family table.B. family members do not greet each other.C. young people live happily in their familiesD. young people seldom talk with their family members7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. multitasking is harmful to young people’s development.B. Young people benefit a lot from modern gadgets.C. Multitasking is an important skill to young people.D. Yong people must learn skills for future jobs.8. The author develops the passage mainly by ________.A. providing typical examplesB. following the natural time orderC. comparing opinions from different fieldsD. presenting a cause and analyzing its effectsC9. _______ can get a Special Admission ticket for himself/ herself.A. A 56-year-old bus driverB.A school girl with her valid student cardC. A policeman in his fortiesD. A U.S. army officer on active duty10. If you want to enter the Expo Park once every week in one month and don’t want to botherto buy the ticket each time, you can buy a ______ ticket.A. Single Day AdmissionB. Special AdmissionC. 3 Day AdmissionD. 7 Day Admission11. The function of the table is to ______ .A. remind the public of the difficulty buying the Expo ticketsB. show which groups of people can get admission into the Expo ParkC. provide information about the Expo tickets and regulationsD. introduce all the visiting regulations in the Expo ParkDWith alarming regularity, we read about oil tankers having accidents near land and the terrible consequences of the oil spills(泄露) on people, nature, and the environment.Millions of dollars have been used in developing special chemicals to help dismiss the spills and to clean up the animals, beaches, and land spoiled by the oil.Unfortunately, when many of these chemicals are used, more damage is caused to the environment, especially to lives in the sea.Of all today's environmental disasters, an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious.Although oil is poisonous, it is a natural material. In the end, it breaks down naturally. There are, of course, long-term effects, but it is usually more serious in the short term.Nature by itself works better than chemical materials, but when there is a spill, we demand that governments act immediately with as much hi-tech knowledge as possible. In 1967 the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Scilly Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000 tons of oil into the ocean. If you go there today, you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever happened.Governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage.Interestingly, the biggest companies in the world produce cars, and the next biggest s u p p l y t h e g a s o l i n e t o m a k e t h e m r u n.We should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil.Govern -ments should be encouraging research into new technologies, such as cars run by solar power, electricity, hydrogen, and so on.Much of this research has, in the past, been held back by the oil, gas, and coal.If the world's millions of cars were 10% more efficient —and the industry could easily produce cars at least twice as efficient, we would need many fewer tankers crossing the oceans each year.If this happened, the risks of oil spills would be reduced, and the air we breathe would be cleaner and fresher, too.11. What is the passage mainly talking about?A. Oil spills pollution.B. What oil pollution is.C. Oil tanker accidents.D. How to reduce oil pollution.12. How does the author support the idea that oil spills are not as serious as peoplebelieve?A. By giving a description.B. By making an argument.C. By giving an example.D. By drawing a diagram.13. What does the underlined word "risk" in Paragraph 5 refer to?A. Transportation depending more on oil.B. Poisonous oil breaking down naturally.C. Millions of tons of oil spilling into the sea.D. More environmental damage being caused.14. Which suggestion is made for reducing oil tank accidents according to the passage?A. We should build safer tankers in the near future.B. We should develop new technologies to cut oil use.C. Tankers should not be allowed to sail near the coastlines.D. Countries should build more oil pipelines under the sea.1—15 CDAB, CDAD, BDC, ACDB。

AMom was a teacher most of her life. When she wasn’t in the classroom, she was educating her children or grandchildren: correcting our grammar; starting us on collections of butterflies, flowers or rocks; or inspiring a discussion on her most recent “Book of the Month Club” topic. Mom made learning fun.It was sad for my three brothers and me to see her suffering in later years. At eighty-five, she suffered a stroke and she went steadily downhill after that. Two days before she died, my brothers and I met at her nursing home and took her for a short ride in a wheelchair. While we waited for the staff to lift her back into bed, Mom fell asleep. Not wanting to wake her, we moved to the far end of the room and spoke softly. After several minutes our conversation was interrupted by a sound coming from across the room. We stopped talking and looked at Mom. Her eyes were closed, but she was clearly trying to communicate with us. We went to her side.“Whirr,” she sa id weakly.“Where?” I asked. “Mom, is there something you want?” “Whirr,” she repeated a bit stronger. My brothers and I looked at each other and shook our heads sadly.Mom opene d her eyes, sighed, and with all the energy she could maser said, “Not was, say were!”It suddenly occurred to us that Mom was correcting brother Jim’s last sentence. “If it was up to me…”Jim leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Mom,” he whispered. He notes that consumers use between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags per year worldwide. Some experts believe that all these bags harm the environment. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and, as it does so, poisonous materials are released into the water and soil.Further damage is caused if plastic bags enter the sea. For example, endangered sea turtles cannot tell the bags from jellyfish(水母), their main source of food, and often choke on(噎死)them.Floating plastic bags have been spotted as far north as the Arctic Ocean and as far south as the southern end of South America. One expert predicts that, within ten years, plastic bags will wash up in Antarctica! However, this kind of bag does have its advantages.“Plastic grocery bags are some of the most reused things around the house,” explained Laurie Kusek of the American Plastics Council.According to the Film and Bag Federation, a trade group in the US plastics industry, paper bags use more energy and create more waste than plastic bags. Plastic bags require 40 per cent lessenergy to produce and cause 70 per cent less air pollution, the group explained. They also release as much as 94 percent less waste into the water than paper ones. But paper bags do break down more quickly than plastic bags. They don’t endanger wildlife, either. So what should we do? One possible solution would be to use biodegradable(可降解的)plastic bags. But until biodegradable technology improves, it might be easier to pack things you buy in reusable cloth bags.9. The best title of the passage is _____.A. Paper Causes Less PollutionB. Plastic Causes Less PollutionC. Paper and Plastics Cause PollutionD. Paper Bags Break Down More Quickly10. The underlined word “drawbacks” might mean “_____”.A. AdvantagesB. disadvantagesC. air pollutionD. waste11. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. Plastic takes longer to break down than paper.B. Sea turtles usually mistake the plastic bags for jellyfish.C. Paper bags require less energy than plastic bags.D. You’d better pack things in reu sable cloth bags.12. Which of the following shows that paper bags are better than plastic ones?A. Paper bags take less time to rot.B. Paper bags cause less air pollution.C. Paper bags are more reusable.D. Paper bags cause less water pollution.DHigh-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t tas te as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast the bread. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make for better-tasting meals. Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.Other high-tech timesavers have similar disadvantages. For examples, most people use the phone or e-mail to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you word-process(文字处理)a homework assignment instead of handwriting it, you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual wor ds they are writing.13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. The writer likes high-tech cooking.B. Low-tech cooking produces better-tasting meals.C. High-tech news programs always keep you reading what is important to you.D. Handwritten homework is better than word-processed homework.14. How does the writer feel about high-tech tool?A. Better late than never.B. Easy come, easy go.C. Every coin has two sides.D. Learn to walk before you run.15. What is the main subject discussed in the text?A. High-tech vs. low-tech.B. Advantages vs. disadvantages.C. Newspapers and magazines vs. television and the Internet.D. Word-processing vs. handwriting.16. How is the text organized?A. Explanation—Argument—Description.B. Opinion—Discussion—Description.C. Topic—Comparison—Supporting examples.D. Introduction—Supporting examples—Discussion.EThe Great Wall of China can ,indeed, be seen from outer space with the naked(赤裸的) eye.So education officials, who felt worried about changing textbooks—which have long held that the Great Wall and the dykes(堤堰)in the Netherlands were the only man-made structures visible from space—can breathe easy.Yang Liwei, the nation’s first spaceman, disappointed a lot of Chinese when he said he did not see the wall during his orbit of less than 24 hours in October 2003, giving rise to calls for revisions(修改) in textbooks. But there is a rider: There are many, many structures which can also be seen, such as the Pyramids of Egypt, airports, highways and even Beijing’s Third Ring Road.Undoubtedly, it requires an atmospheric “ perfect storm” in outer space, defined as an altitude of about 350 km and you have to be in the right place at the right time, under the right conditions to spot a particular structure. Chinese-American spaceman Leroy Chiao, who has been on three space flights and is currently coming to the end of his six-month stint(期限) on the joint US-Russian space station, has provided the first photographic evidence of sections of the Great Wall using commercially available equipment.According to Chiao, the chances of shooting the Great Wall area are “maybe once every few days and only during dayligh t every three months. ” Since late March, Chiao has had just one opportunity to fly over the Great Wall, but the weather was dangerous. He has one last chance before he is scheduled to land in Kazakhstan on April 25—and he will be keeping a sharp lookout.17. Now the education officials “can breathe easy” because they know_____.A. they don’t need to change the textbooksB. they’ve been seriously mistakenC. what Yang Liwei said was not trueD. they can revise the textbooks as wished18. What does the underlined word “rider” in the 4th paragraph possibly mean?A. An imagined conclusion.B. An added statement.C. A person in a spaceshipD. A strange thing.19. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Yang Liwei orbited around the earth in less than 24 hours.B. Leroy Chiao shot the Great Wall with commercially available equipment.C. To spot a particular structure in outer space, you need right conditions.D. Leroy Chiao land in the United States on April 25.20. One can get a chance to see the Great Wall from the space station_____.A. every few daysB. only once every three monthsC. only when it’s in daylightD. only when the weather is dangerous 1—20 CDCAC ACDCB CABCA CABDC。

山西省2012高考英语二轮复习专题训练:阅读理解(46)阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
AChildren always appreciate small gifts of money. Father, of course, provides a regular supply of pocket-money, but uncles and aunts are always a source of extra income. With some children, small sums go a long way. If sixpences are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside money-boxes. Only very thrifty (节俭的) children manage to fill up a money-box. For most of them, sixpence is a small price to pay for a satisfying bar of chocolate. My nephew, George, has a money-box but it is always empty. Very few of the sixpences I had given him found their way there. I gave him sixpence yesterday and advised him to save it. Instead, he bought himself sixpence worth of trouble. On his way to the sweet shop, he dropped his sixpence and it rolled along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain (下水道). George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed his right arm through the drain cover. However, he could not find his sixpence anywhere, and what was more, he could not get his arm out. A crowd of people gathered round him and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. The fire-brigade was called and two firemen freed George using a special type of grease. George was not too upset by his sixpence because the lady who owns the sweet shop heard about his trouble and rewarded him with a large box of chocolate.1. According to the passage, children often get pocket-money from their ______.A. fathersB. mothersC. unclesD. aunts2. The underlined word “go” in the first paragraph probably means ______.A. moveB. lastC. useD. work3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Fathers seldom give pocket-money to their children.B. Most children are able to fill up their money-boxes.C. George bought a large box of chocolate using the money given by the writer.D. George didn’t feel sorry for his bad experience.4. The best title of this passage should be _____.A. Save your moneyB. George’s bad experienceC. Sixpence worth of troubleD. Pocket-moneyBHigh school dropouts earn an average of $ 9,000 less per year than graduates. Now a new study denies a common belief why they quit. It’s much more basic than failing in exams.Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t make it. They are lazy, and perhaps not too bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who quit school about why they left.“The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have graduated from high school.” John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic(美籍西班牙的)students will receive a diploma, and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So, if failing grades don’t explain w hy these kids quit, what does? Again, John Bridgeland: “The most dependable finding was that they were bored.” “They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in t he classroom to their own lives, or to their career aspirations.”The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US, only one state, New Mexico, has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18, no exceptions. Another researcher says raising the compulsory attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school.“As these dropouts look back, they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything of that sort gives these people an extra push to stick it out and it through to the end, which is probably helpful.”New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18. But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point —the need for reform. It’s been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant, and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actuallymeans something.5. Most high school students drop out of school because ______.A. they have failing gradesB. they take no interest in classesC. they are not allowed to attend schoolD. they are lazy and not intelligent6. According to the passage, which state has a law requiring school attendance until they graduate?A. New HampshireB. UtahC. New MexicoD. The District of Columbia7. Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage?A. Nearly 10,000 Americans, including 1,100 children and 7,500 younger adults died.B. One sixth people in the United States were infected by Swine flu.C. More than 200,000 Americans had been in hospital.D. The American government had distribute most of the vaccine to the general population.14. In the sentence “This is still a good window of opportunity to be vaccinated,”the “ window ofopportunity” means ______.A. favourable timeB. bad luckC. unfortunate occasionD. favourable window15. Seasonal influenza ______.A. usually cause more deaths and a lot of people in hospitalB. will be a third wave in the next springC. will continue to spreadD. will make more people affected16. According to the passage, people in America should _______.A. forget H1N1 influenza because it is decreasing graduallyB. continue to protect themselves and their family from H1N1 influenza though it isdecreasingC. be complacent about getting the vaccine because of reportsD. often go outdoorsEThere is a range of activities which require movements of about one to four or five miles. These might be leisure activities, such as moving from home to swimming pool, tennis club, the theater or other cultural centers, or to a secondary or more advanced school; or they might be movements related with work and shopping in the central areas of cities. The use of cars which are able to carry five people at 80 mph for satisfying these needs is wasteful of space and most productive of disturbance to other road users. The use of the bicycle, or some more modern derivative of it, is probably worth more consideration than has recently been given to it. The bicycle itself is a remarkably efficient and simple device for using human muscular energy for transportation. In pure energy terms, it is fourto five times as efficient as walking, even though human walking itself is twice as efficient as the movement of effective animals such as dogs. It is still widely used, not only in some developing countries where bicycles are major means of people and goods, but in a few richer towns such as Amsterdam in Holland and Cambridge in England. The bicycle neither gives enough protection from the weather nor is very suitable for carrying goods, and demands considerable muscular work to make progress against wind or uphill. It also offers its rider no protection against collisions (碰撞) with other vehicles. All these difficulties could, however, be greatly got rid of with relatively small changes in design. The whole machine could be enclosed in a plastic bubble (气泡) which would provide some protection in case of accidents. It would be easy to add a small petrol or electric motor. A wide variety of designs would be possible. As in rowing, we might employ the power of the arms or the general body musculature, as well as those of the legs; more muscular exercise would be good for the health of many people in cities, and a wide use of bicycle like muscle-powered vehicles would be a useful way to ensure this. It could also provide opportunities for showing-off by the young and vigorous.17. The main idea of the first paragraph is that the car _______.A. can satisfy the demand for speedB. causes waste of spaceC. produces disturbance to other road usersD. is far from perfect for short range movements18. More attention should be given to the bicycle as a means of transport because it is _______.A. a very efficient and simple deviceB. much cheaper than a carC. widely used in Amsterdam and CambridgeD. still used by rich people19. Enclosing the bicycle in a plastic bubble would ______.A. make it easier to useB. save muscular energyC. provide protection from the weatherD. prevent it from colliding with other vehicles20. Which of these is UNTRUE for the present bicycle?A. It is far more efficient than the movement of animals.B. It offers its rider no protection.C. It is not very suitable for carrying goods.D. It can hardly be improved on.1—20 ABDCB CCBDA BADAA BDADD。

山西省2012高考英语二轮复习专题训练:阅读理解(12)阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
AIn the computer age, most of us take a broadband Internet connection for granted.Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s connections are many times faster than those in the early days.Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago.And the files are much bigger too. There’s a catch, of course. You have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you.And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remote locations. In cities and suburbs, it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries.Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely(稀疏地)populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense. But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere. Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines.Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables(光纤电缆)promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.Still, the “last mile” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication(迹象), it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.1.The underlined part “ a catch” (in Paragraph 2)probably means “________”.A. a rare challenge B. a desirable plan C.an efficient device D. a hidden problem2.What can we know from the third paragraph?A.Internet connection has not been popular in most cities.B.Internet service providers care about rural customers.C.Computer is popular in developing countries.D.It is hard to bring Internet access to users in remote areas.3.Paragraph 4 mainly tells us that technological advancements ________.A.make TV and telephone available everywhereB.bring great change to people’s everyday lifeC.make it possible for more people to use the InternetD.bring faster Internet connections to users4.What may eventually settle the “last mile” problem?A.The broadband connection’s getting faster.B.More and more Internet users.C.More and more Internet connections.D.The rapid progress in cell phone technology.BTo understand the marketing concept, it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling. Not too many years ago, most industries concentrated primarily on the efficient production of goods, and then relied on “persuasive salesmanship” to move as much of these goods as possible.Such production and selling focuses on the needs of the seller to produce goods and then convert(使转换)them into money.Marketing, on the other hand, focuses on the wants of consumers. It begins with first analyzing the preferences and demands of consumers and then producing goods that will satisfy them. This eye-on-the-consumer approach is known as the marketing concept, which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce, the makers and dealers first find out what the consumer wants to buy and then go about making it available for purchase. This concept does not imply that business is benevolent(慈善的)or that consumer satisfaction is given priority over profit in a company. There are always two sides to every business transaction—the firm and the customer—and each must be satisfied before trade occurs.Successful merchants and producers, however, recognize that the surest route to profitis through understanding and catering to(迎合)customers. A striking example of the importance of catering to the consumer presented itself in mid-1985, when Coca Cola changed the flavor of its drink. The non-acceptance of the new flavor by a significant portion of the public brought about a prompt restoration(恢复)of the Classic Coke, which was then marketed alongside the new.5.The marketing concept discussed in the passage is ________.A.the practice of turning goods into moneyB.making goods available for purchaseC.the customer-centered approachD. a form of persuasive salesmanship6.What was the main concern of industries before the marketing first appeared at the toy fair in New York in 1959.Its creator was RuthHandler, an American businesswoman. She and her husband Elliott along with Harold Matt Matson started the toy company Mattel. She based the design of the new doll on a German doll named Bild Lilli and named her after their daughter Barbara. The first Barbie wore a black and white swimsuit and had her hair in a ponytail(马尾辫).She looked very grown-up.But any concerns that parents would not want to buy it for little girls were soon proved wrong.Mattel sold 300,000 Barbie dolls in the first year at a price of three dollars.Today, a fifty-year-old Barbie in good condition might cost more than 27,000 dollars.Barbie dolls have represented 50 different nationalities and are sold in 150 countries.Mattel says 90% of girls in the United States between the ages of three and ten own at least one Barbie doll.It says girls between the ages of three and six own an average of about 12.Barbie also faced her share of critics.A well-known example was when women’s education groups objec ted to a talking Barbie doll that declared, among other things, “Math class is tough!” Mattel agreed to change it.Saudi Arabia has banned Barbie dolls. And a lawmaker in the American state of West Virginia would like to do the same.Last month, he proposed banning sales of Barbie and other dolls that influence girls to put too much importance on physical beauty. Some people say Barbie is an unhealthy role model for young girls.Robin Gerber disagrees. She wrote a book about Barbie. She points out dolls like scientist Barbie and race car driver Barbie. She says people who criticize Barbie should tell girls the story of the businesswoman who created her.She says Ruth Handler wanted the dolls to help girls think about what they wanted to do with their lives.9.The first Barbie doll might not be popular among little girls because _______.A.her hairstyle was out of fashionB.her appearance looked much too matureC.her way of BarbieD.argues for banning the sales of Barbie dollsDThe biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist(恐布分子)with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic(电磁)interference(干扰).The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic device such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation(航空)industry, has recommended that all airlines ban(禁止)such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights.Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit (禁止)passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is prediction how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft’s computers.Experts know that portable device emit radiation which affects those wavelengthswhich aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable(易受损的)to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment.Another worrying though, is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music is too loud .13.What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?A.They may have taken place during take-off and landing.B.They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.C.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.D.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers’ portable computers.14.Few airlines want to impose(强加)a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because .A.they have other effective safety measures to fall back onB.they don’t believe ther e is such a danger as radio interferenceC.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be provedD.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players 15.Why is it difficult to predict the possible effe cts of electromagnetic fields on an airplane’s computers?A.Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.B.Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.C.Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.D.Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.1—15 DDCD CBAD BAAC CCD。
