They asked how they could still find a sense of community when told to stay apart. One neighborhood responded in a creative way —a resident (居民) created some interesting “I Spy” games in which people of any age could join.Emily Nelson, a person living in the Sunnymede neighborhood in South Bend, Indiana, created these games by using a Facebook group. At first, she asked people to tape paper shamrocks (三叶草) on their front windows or draw them in chalk on their driveways —anything that would be noticed by kids walking on the sidewalk. Neighborhood kids could add up how many they found and post the pictures to the Facebook group. The neighborhood response was positive, so Nelson drew up a calendar through mid-April with other themed days, including Disney characters, Mario, hearts for health care workers, dinosaurs, and a bunny hunt. Nelson encouraged the walkers to dress in costumes that match the themes. In this way, she thought they’d enjoy themselves better in the special period. For any neighbors who didn’t have themed objects, decorations, or chalk to use, another neighbor would put together packets of coloring paper that he or she could drop off in mailboxes as requested. According to Nelson, she and her family saw more than 28 Disney characters posted around the neighborhood on the most recent day. Even the mailman, according to local people, took notice and asked about the sudden appearance of Disney items in windows.Kids were not the only ones who had been excited. Neighbor Carolyn Evans wrote to Nelson on the Facebook page, saying, “We had a great time looking for characters today! What a fun thing for all of us to do! THANK YOU for creating this and THANK YOU to all of our neighbors who are taking part in it!”Thanks to Nelson’s new games, grateful community members were a little closer to finding new ways to stay in touch.4. What did Emily Nelson ask kids to do in her first game?A. Search for and share shamrock creations.B. Play on the sidewalk with other kids.C. Draw a map of the neighborhood.D. Start a Facebook group.5. What can we know about the themed games from Paragraph 4?A. They were costly but interesting.B. They were friendly and popular.C. They were held at Disneyland.D. Researchers have found that they use collective computation (群体计算) when they break up into teams.Typically, the older females lead the rest of the younger monkeys, having the final say in group activities. But that’s not the case for wild spider monkeys living in a protected area near Punta Laguna, Mexico. When they’re ready to search for food, the monkeys form teams without a single leader picking who goes into which group. Instead, each monkey decides^which group to join and when to move to another group. The result, say researchers, is that the monkeys are collectively computing good team sizes given the availability (可获性) of food in the forest.“The spider monkeys seem to be collecting information about resources by forming these small teams, so that as a group they know their environment better than anyone does on its own,” lead study author, Gabriel Ramos-Fernandez of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, said. To study the animals’ behavior, researchers spent two years recording 47 different spider monkeys for five hours each day. For hunting for food, they usually formed groups of 2 to 17 monkeys. Researchers worked together with the scientists at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico to find outhow a spider monkey decided to stay with or leave a group. Their study found that the monkeys, decisions were influenced by the decisions of the other monkeys on the team. They would feel out their teammates about the best size and then make their own decisions accordingly. The results produced teams of many different sizes, which were helpful in finding fruit in the forest. The researchers said that the collectively computed sizes were sometimes not a perfect match based on the food that was available. They suggest a similar study should be used to examine how other groups or systems work, such as flocks of birds or schools of fish.8. How do spider monkeys living near Punta Laguna differ from the typical ones?A. They can live better even in bad weather conditions.B. The sizes of their teams are decided by each of them.C. The older monkeys play a leading role in a team.D. They usually take turns to look for food.9. How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 2?A. Spreading the word.B. Winning all the games.C. Making the final decisions.D. Getting the most delicious food.10. What will probably cause a spider monkey to leave its team?A. Its teammates’ choices.B. The sudden danger that appears.C. The unfair treatment from teammates.D. Its disappointment with the amount of food.11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Spider monkeys can’t offer help to each other in a group.B. Spider monkeys’ collective computation is not always useful.C. The researchers will do a further study about spider monkeys.D. Birds also use collective computation when they form groups.DThe famous French beauty company L’Oreal has promised that by 2030, 95 percent of its ingredients (原料) will come from renewable plant sources and be respectful of the environment. Asked what is driving the beauty industry to clean and green beauty, Laurent Gilbert, one of L’Oreal’s directors said, “Natural science has made progress in the past years so that we can change to natural ingredients.”L’Oreal says it will draw on recent developments in Green Sciences to get the best that nature has to offer through technology. Up to now, 80 percent of the Group’s materials have been easily biodegradable (生物可降解的), 59 percent have been renewable, and 34 percent have beennatural or of natural origin. And 29 percent of the ingredients used in their products were developed following the rules of Green Chemistry.“We have already used active ingredients which are plant-based. The way we are getting and producing ingredients will change. Besides making it recyclable, we are trying to move to a new kind of packaging.”“All our promises are global. We have two research centers in India, one in Bengaluru and one in Mumbai. Those are really important to those goals. The Bengaluru one is being specialized in natural ingredients. It will give support to this change,” says the research center, which was set up in India in 1994.To achieve these aims, L’Oreal has brought all of its resources in Green Sciences together, including recent progress in agricultural economics, together with new developments in biotechnology, Green Chemistry and modelling tools. The Group is also building strong relationships with universities, new companies and its own material suppliers.12. What plays an important role in L’Oreal’s decision to change its ingredients?A. The support from the local government.B. The development of natural science.C. The call for smart spending habits.D. The research on target markets.13. How does the author show L’Oreal’s environmental efforts in Paragraph 2?A. By listing data.B. By making comparisons.C. By telling personal stories.D. By showing causes and effects.14. In spite of a weekend of warnings, more than 50 000 computers at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer security experts said on Monday. The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly on Monday by making computers fire off dozens of infected(被传染的)e-mails. Although the virus causes no serious damage to a computer, its effect was far reaching. To make matters worse,a similar virus called “Papa” was discovered on Monday. Papa is programmed to send out even more infected e-mails than Melissa. The Melissa virus comes in the form of an e-mail,usually containing the subject line“Important Message”. It appears to be fr om a friend. The body of the e-mail message says,“Here is that document you asked for...,don’t show it to anyone else.” Attached(附)to the message is a document file.Once the user opens that file, the virus digs into the user’s address book and sends infected documents to the first 50 addresses. E-mails from the Papa virus include an attachedspreadsheet(电子数据文件)file. When the user opens that file, the virus sends 60 infected e-mails.The reason why this is spreading so fast is that you are getting it from people you know. You should never open documents or attachments from people you don’t know. People who get an unexpected e-mail with the “important message” subject line should delete it immediately and not open the message.28. In winter it could be very nasty because ofstrong winds and sea spray. In fact, when a gale was blowing, Norah and her husband got used to sleeping in a small room downstairs, because their bedroom upstairs, which faced the gales, had a very big window, and they were afraid that an extra violent gust might break it and blow pieces of broken glass over them. Also, the salt spray from the sea put an end to many of the colourful plants Norah planted in her garden. She tried putting up a fence to protect them, but the wind just hit it, went up over the top and then down the other side, so in the end she filled the garden with trees and bushes that liked salt. But most of the summer Norah enjoyed her cottage and garden very much. At weekends she could sit out of doors in the sun, looking at the beautiful view, with interesting ships and boats passing by, and she could very easily cycle down to the sea for a swim. Now, Norah and her husband had plenty of friends and relations. In the summer lots of them used to come to enjoy the beautiful place, and in the end it really became quite annoying for Norah and her husband. When they were at home, they found friends and relations arriving, expecting to be given unlimited drinks and meals, and to sit in the sun for hours, talking as if Norah and her husband had nothing else to do but entertain and listen to them. This went on for several years. Norah did not wish to appear rude by refusing to let her friends and relations in, but on the other hand, she was getting tired every summer. Then one day Norah was complaining about this to her hairdresser while she was doing her hair. “You’re disturbed by too many uninvited guests, are you?” said the hairdresser. “Why don’t you try my way of escaping?”“What’s that?” asked Norah.“Well,” the hairdresser answered, “when the bell rings, I put on my coat and take my shopping bag. Here are some of the common differences that you will find between these three kinds of English.Pronunciation among the three types of English can be different. In American English, the “r” at the end of a word almost always affects its pronunciation, while in Australian and British English, the “r” is often silent. Australian English is unique due to the fact that many words have sounds that are gone. Instead of saying “good day”, Australian speakers say “g’day”. The main pronunc iation difference between the three, however, is the pronunciation of the vowel (元音) sounds. Not only do the three types of English sound different, but they are also spelled differently. In some ways, the spelling shows the difference in pronunciation. For example, Americans use the word airplane. In Great Britain, the word is aeroplane, and it is pronounced with an “o” sound. Another example is the word aluminium, which is the UK spelling, and aluminum is the US spelling. Can you find the difference? In this example, the Australian spelling is the same as the UK spelling.Another common spelling difference between British English and American English is the use of -our or -or at the end of a word. For example, in the UK, colour, flavour, honour are words that all end with -our. In America, they are spelled with -or endings. In Australia, the -our spelling is almost universal. Also, the endings -re and -er are different between different English dialects. In America, you will go to the theater or fitness center, while in Britain you will visit the theatre or fitness centre. Again, Australian English follows the British way.49. The main pronunciation difference between American English and British English lies in .A. the sound of “r” at the end of wordsB. the words with sounds that are goneC. the vowel sounds of some wordsD. the last sound of many words50. Which of the following words belongs to the Australian spelling?A. Airplane.B. Flavor.C. Theater.D. Aluminium.51. After reading the text, we can learn that .A. Australian English has become the most popular English nowB. Australian English is more difficult to learn than AmericanEnglishC. Australian English is more difficult to follow than American EnglishD. Australian English follows the British way more than the American way52. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?A. To show that English has developed differently in different countries.B. To tell the differences between American, British and Australian English.C. To encourage us to explore the differences of English used in different countries.D. To suggest we speak different English when we are chatting with people from different countries.CLouis Pasteur was born in Dole, France on December 27, 1822. His family was poor, and during his early education Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However, when Pasteur was exposed to science as a teenager, he knew he had found his career. In 1838, Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. However, three died young from typhoid fever (伤寒症). It was the deaths of his children that drove Pasteur to investigate the infectious disease in order to find a cure.During Pasteur’s time, people believed that bacteria (细菌) appeared due to “spontaneous generation (自然发生)”. They thought that the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere. Pasteur carried out experiments to see if this was true. Through hisexperiments he proved that germs were living things that came from other living things. They didn’t just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery in the study of biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of Germ Theory. As Pasteur learned more about bacteria, he began to think they may be the cause of diseases in humans. When the French silk market was threatened by a disease to silkworms (蝉), Pasteur decided to investigate. He discovered that this disease was caused by germs. By killing them from the silkworm farms, he was able to cease the disease and save the French silk business.Today Louis Pasteur is known as one of the most important scientists in history. His discoveries led to an understanding of bacteria and diseases that has helped save millions and millions of lives.53. After his children’s deaths, Louis Pasteur .A. became afraid of infectious diseasesB. was frustrated and wanted to do nothingC. decided to find out how to treat the diseaseD. didn’t know it was typhoid fever that ca used their deaths54. What is implied about Louis Pasteur’s discovery in Paragraph 3?A. It supported what most people thought at that time.B. It revealed that bacteria often appeared out of nowhere.C. It attracted the attention of the Father of Germ Theory.D. It was a very important discovery in the history of biology.55. What does the underlined word “cease” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. End.B. Find.C. Develop.D. Spread.56. What is the text mainly about?A. A disease that killed children easily in history.B. A great scientist in the field of biology in history.C. Some of the most important scientists in history.D. Some of the most important discoveries in history.DJust like humans, animals need to get a few good hours of sleep in order to do their best, but the ways in which different animals sleep may surprise you.Your pet cat is known for loving sleep. However, you probably don’t realize that she can sleep about 14 hours a day. That leaves her around 10 waking hours to enjoy playtime and meals, and you may also notice that your cat is ready to run a marathon around your house at night even though she just spends most of the daylight hours sleeping. This is because they love to hunt at night. Besides, because big cats in the wild, such as tigers and lions, don’t have many predators (食肉动物) to worry about, these wild felines can enjoy sleep all day without fear. Not all snails (蜗牛) can sleep for years, but the desert snail, which can live up to 15 years, can actually sleep for three full years. These creatures need to stay wet to survive, which can be very difficult in dry desert climates. Therefore, they bury themselves underground so as to protect themselves until the environment becomes more suitable. There are actually quite a few good reasons why bats sleep while they are hanging upside down. This seemingly awkward (笨拙的) position keeps them safe from many predators, as it confuses (使迷惑) predators and keeps themselves out of the sight of those animals that may attack them while they are sleeping. And if they do feel threatened, this position also gives them the chance to quickly take flight and get away to safety. This is because bats aren’t strong enough to start flying from a standing position. Instead, they need to fall into flying with their powerful wings.57. From the text we can infer that the underlined word “felines” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to animals that .A. hunt at nightB. belong to the cat familyC. love sleepingD. have many predators58. Desert snails bury themselves underground in order to .A. stay away from predatorsB. hide themselvesC. stay wetD. hunt for food59. Bats sleep hanging upside down for the following reasons EXCEPT that .A. the position can protect them from many predatorsB. the position can allow them to take flight quicklyC. the position can confuse their predatorsD. the position can build up their strength60. Which of the following is the best title of the text?A. How long should animals sleep?B. Reasons why animals need sleepC. Unique ways some animals sleepD. How do animals protect themselves during sleep?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从下框A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。

The body of the e-mail message says,“Here is that document you asked for...,don’t show it to anyone else.” Attached(附)to the message is a document file.Once the user opens that file, the virus digs into the user’s address book and sends infecteddocuments to the first 50 addresses. E-mails from the Papa virus include an attached spreadsheet(电子数据文件)file. If you opened an infected file by Melissa virus, the virus would ______________.A. damage the user’s address book at onceB. soon spread through the user’s list of addressC. let the first 50 addresses go out of the computerD. change the user’s address book in the computerDNorah had a cottage on a cliff above a big bay. In winter it could be very nasty because of strong winds and sea spray. If it’s someone I don’t want to see, I say innocently,’ I’m sorry, but I’ve got to go out.’ But...”32. The underlined word “cycle” can be replaced by_______________.A. ride by bikeB. driveC. walkD. go by ship33. We can infer that________________.A. a lot of friends came to visit them in winterB. few friends came to visit them in winterC. friends came to visit them only for drinks and mealsD. Norah was a good cook34. Which of the following is the best title ?A. A Good Place of Enjoying the SeaB. A Warm-hearted CoupleC. A Clever Way of EscapingD. A Visit to Norah35. What is the hairdresser likely to continue to say in the end?A. If I am tired, I say, “Sorry, can you come next time?”B. If it’s someone I like to see, I say, “How lucky! I’ve just come in!”C. If it’s someone I like to see, I say, “How happy to see you! I was going shopping, but now I’ve changed my mind.”D. If it is fine that day, I say, “I’m tired of this, but I’ll show you around the place, anyhow.”根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AMaaseik, a city in Belgium, has opened an exhibition of about 200 relics and treasures of the Tang Dynasty (618 AD - 907 AD), showing China’s golden age of ancient civilisation(文明).The exhibition, which opened on May 11 and will continue until Oct. 20, is part of the city’s effort to create a centre of Chinese culture. Belgian Princess Mathilde formally announced the beginning of the exhibition, titled “China’s Golden Age: Treasures from the Tang Dynasty”.The items, including gold plates and silver wares for royal families, Tang Dynasty tri-colour glazed figurines(小雕像) of women and paintings, have recently been on exhibit in the Dutch city of Assert. All of the exhibited items are from Shaanxi Province, China. Its provincial capital Xi’an was the most populous(人口多的) city in the world and once the capital of the Tang Dynasty. The Tang period is generally regarded as a high point in Chinese civilization—equal to, or better than that of the earlier Han Dynasty (202 BC—220 AD), a golden age of Chinese culture.Several years ago, said Dirk Verlaak, vice-mayor of Maaseik, his city and Assen teamed up to host history and culture exhibitions of China’s first two imperial dynasties, the Qin (221 BC—206 BC) and the Han. The Chinese relics and treasures attracted 350,000 visitors in Assen and 190,000 in Maaseik.“Westerners don’t know much about China’s ancient civilisation and history, and we hope the new exhibition in Maaseik can attract more visitors,” said Verlaak.1. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams. After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.4. Or simply a glance? On September 12, 2017, Apple introduced its iPhone X, which has an eye-catching feature—Face ID.With Face ID, Apple says, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking at it. It is powered by a so-called TrueDepth camera system built into the front of the iPhone X.When the camera system sees a person’s face, it uses 30,000 unseen dots to “map” the shape and outline of the face. A mathematical model of the face will then be created and stored in the phone. The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model. If the two match, then the phone unlocks. This happens in less than a second.Apple says the system is smart. If you change your hairstyle, put on sunglasses or makeup, or use the phone in the dark, Face ID still works.Although the technology sounds fancy, there are still concerns. For example, will Face ID work for twins?According to Apple, the chance of others to unlock your iPhone X using Face ID is one in a million. Face ID can tell the difference between twins, but the error rating(出错率) rises. So one would need to set a password then.Apple also emphasizes that Face ID only unlocks when you stare at it. It is what Apple calls “attention aware”. So the phone won’t unlock if you are just glancing at the phone for the time. It won’t work either if someone puts the phone at your sleeping face or your photo.8. Face ID helps iPhone X users to ________.A. get their phones more eye-catchingB. make the phone camera powerfulC. unlock their cell phones quicklyD. create and store their face model easily9. How does the camera system of Face ID work?A. It compares the face model with the user’s face later.B. It remembers the users’ faces by taking their pictures.C. It uses a map to store face models of its users for use.D. It matches the users’ faces with dots in the system.10. What is the best title of the text?A. The introduction of the iPhone XB. The features of the iPhone XC. The iPhone X recognizes a faceD. Unlock the iPhone X by a stare.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIn 2010, I was in the Tallahassee, Florida airport waiting to fly to Indiana to see my family. My flight had been put off and I was unhappy. Then I heard a woman crying so hard.I looked around and did not see anyone with her. People were staring at her but no one was coming up to help her. It was clear her heart was broken. My heart was broken for her. I sat next to her and placed my arm around her, but without looking at me she continued to cry.I just sat there, held her firmly and didn't say anything. I felt a little embarrassed at first. She cried for about ten minutes and then she began to calm down. She looked up to see who was holding her.She could barely speak but she got out the words, “My daughter's husband was just killed in a car accident. They were just married. Oh, my God! He was just like a son.” Then she broke down again. I said a prayer to myself that she and her family could get through the loss. Shortly after that a man came up to us and took the crying stranger by the arm and asked her to go with him. She could barely get up. He took her arm and they walked away.I sat there thinking about what had just happened. I thoughtabout what if that had been me or someone I love. She thought Bobby had made a new dog friend. It seemed very friendly and got well along with Bobby. They would run after each other, play on the pool cover, gently wrestle or nap side by side.At first she thought it was a wild dog. But when she posted a photo of the two playing on her Facebook, a pet rescue center called her. The group told her the Atlanta Wolf Project had been trying to catch the wolf for months, but they failed. Prior gave them new hope.Because of the wolf's friendship with her pet dog, it was likely to come back to her backyard. Researchers hoped Prior could help them. When they put some traps (陷阱) in the back of her yard, Prior got a very complicated feeling. She couldn't describe what it was, but she was closely surrounded by it. The wolf would be in a safe place, but she would do something that harmed Bobby's feelings.Researchers told Prior that they would take the rare, black wolf to the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary where it would live with another wolf. They didn't think it a fulfillingsituation for a wild animal like a wolf to be connecting with humans' life. They need to keep a natural awareness to humans and pets and keep to themselves.Wolf experts added they would look into the genetics (遗传学) of the animal to try to learn why it liked to get close to people and tried to play with their pets. Some experts believe it could have a history with well-meaning humans. Prior had not expected that they should meet such a special and lovely wolf. She and Bobby just hoped the dear friend all the best.4.What happened to Vanessa Prior according to the first two paragraphs?A.She was worried about her dog's safety.B.She was awarded for her meaningful picture.C.She realized her dog made friends with a wolf.D.She learnt a lot of knowledge of wolves from researchers.5.How did Prior respond when some traps were set?A.She was afraid to lose Bobby.B.She regretted helping the researchers.C.She was worried about the wolf's future.D.She had bittersweet feelings about the wolf.6.What does the underlined word "fulfilling" in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Changeable.B.Satisfying.C.Strange.D.Worrying.7.What can be inferred about the black wolf from the last two paragraphs?A.It is a kind and sociable animal.B.It was once kept as a human pet.C.It will stay with Bobby for some time.D.It will be sent to the wild to live with other animals.阅读理解Most parents are worried the first time they catch their kids out in a lie. According to child and teen psychiatrist Gayani DeSilva, lying can actually be a sign of healthy development in young children. "Kids lie for many reasons, and much of it is normal," DeSilva says. "People are not born with the knowledge of communicating with others and getting their needs met. They'll experiment with different communication styles and techniques until they find the ones that work best for them. Lying is one of those techniques."As kids get older, they become more aware of how their actions affect others, and many will lie less frequently. In spite of this, parents still need to Lead their kids to form a habit of not lying. According to DeSilva, when children lie, look at them directly and ask what they need. After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying. It's also a good idea to model the behavior you want to see in your kids. In other words, don't lie to your children. This will set you and your children on a course of open communication and trust. In some cases, lying is a sign of a deeper issue. A child who is neglected will lie more than a child who has attentive and responsive parents. He's not sure whether he's loved. He may lie to please others. The same goes for a child who has experienced something unpleasant. He may lie to try to hide his shame, avoid admitting his needs, or to control his surroundings to ensure his safety.By paying attention to the reasons behind a lie, parents can figure out what need to be done. For example, while Jack might lie about completing his homework in order to play video games, he also might be trying to avoid negative feelings connected with school work, and this is just where parents should start, says therapist Gideon Javna.8.What can be inferred about lying from DeSilva's words?A.It has certain benefits for the healthy growth of kids.B.It shows the understanding between kids and parents.C.It can be an effective means of communication for kids.D.It is so common for kids that parents can completely ignore it.9.How can parents get their children to tell the truth?A.By pretending to trust them at first.B.By encouraging them to admit their needs.C.By telling them directly the harm of lying.D.By punishing them for their lying in a safe way.10.The author mentioned the two kids in Paragraph 3 to show _____________.A.It's common for children to lieB.It's important to be a generous parentC.lying can damage family relationshipsD.lying is a reflection of one's mental trouble11.What should Jack's parents do according to Javna?A.Ask him to avoid playing video games:B.Turn his attention to other positive things.C.Give him a second chance to finish homework.D.Listen to and help solve his problem related to school work.阅读理解When your boss calls and tells you to send $100,000 to a supplier, be on your toes. It could be a fake call. As if fake emails weren't enough, on the rise now is the deep fake audio (虚假音频) that can be cloned to sound almost real and perfect and is easy to create. "It's on the rise, and something to watch out for," says Vijay Balasubramaniyan, the CEO of a company called Pindrop.Balasubramaniyan stated during a safety meeting how easy it is to use machine to create sentences that a person probably never said from recorded words. "All you need is five minutes of audio, and you can create fake audio," says Balasubramaniyan. Then, he showed a database (数据库) of voices, typed a sentence, and connected it to a famous people's name on the list. A few seconds later, he clicked "play", and it sounded quite real.More costly are fake phone calls, where cheaters are able to fake the phone number of real contacts andmake calls that result in workers sending off lots of money. He mentioned the example of a United Kingdom energy company in 2019 that got attacked by deep fake audio in a call that asked a worker to send $243,000 to a supplier. Reported by the Wall Street Journal, the worker was directed to pay it within an hour.Balasubramaniyan says if you were to get that kind of call from a "boss" be doubtful and ask to call back right away to prove authenticity (真实性). Besides this, in his opinion, companies need to use more safety measures for keeping up with deep fake artificial intelligence (AI) that produces phone calls and software to check authenticity versus fake calls. "This is a threat that's waiting to happen," he says. "It's a very small number now, but it's very real."12.Why does the author say "be on your toes" in the first paragraph?A.To warn people to be careful.B.To ask people to obey the order.C.To tell people to make an excuse.D.To advise people to put off the deal.13.How is fake audio usually made according to Paragraph 2?A.By attacking the Internet.B.By copying some old audio.C.By recording people's voices.D.By building sentences from a voice database.14.Why is the example of a United Kingdom energy company mentioned?A.To show the terrible result of fake audio.B.To point out the company's safety problems.C.To explain the Internet support of fake audio.D.To study the communication methods of the company.15.What does Balasubramaniyan tell us in the last paragraph?A.How to make better use of AI.B.How to protect workers from fake audio.C.How to collect workers' personal information.D.How to carry out effective business exchanges.二、任务型阅读阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they divided the island between them and stayed on opposite sides of the island. The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree beside him and he ate its fruit. The other man’s land remained barren (贫瘠的).After a week, the first man was lonely so he prayed for a wife. The next day, another ship was completely destroyed, and the only woman survivor soon became his wife. On the other side of the island, there was still nothing.Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing. Finally, the first man prayed for a ship.In the morning, he found a ship at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island behind, because he considered the other man unworthy of receiving God’s blessing, since none of his prayers had been answered. As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”“My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered.“His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him.“He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”“Tell me,” the first man asked with great curiosity, “what did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”“He prayed that all your prayers would be answered.”4.It can be learned from the passage that .A.the men prayed for each other selflesslyB.the first man was a reliable and devoted friendC.the men got along well with each other on the islandD.the men stayed separated to test the power of their prayers5.What does the passage imply about the second man?A.He lost his chances since he was not brave enough to show his needs.B.His wife was another survivor sent by God to keep him company.C.He lost heart in trouble so he deserved no God’s blessing.D.It was his prayers that helped his friend get out of trouble.6.What does the underlined word “rebuked” in Paragraph 9 most probably mean?A.Ignored.B.Requested.C.Criticized.D.Recognized.7.What is the message conveyed in the story?A.Helping others is more important than helping yourself.B.Our blessings are the fruits of our prayers alone.C.A life without the friend is a life without the sun.D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.CMany of the Earth’s creatures die because of human choices. These choices have nothing to do with food or shelter or anything else that helps humans survive. What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.People use parts of animals for everything from hats to handbags, from jewelry to ashtrays and to make powders that sup posedly improve a person’s life.Deciding that a species is endangered and protecting it by law are not always enough.People who kill wildlife illegally rarely get caught.During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a popular cause.Wildlife protection groups made sure everyone saw pictures or films of elephants with their faces cut off for their ivory. These groups also proved that certain populations of elephants were decreasing. As a result, most people stopped buying objects made of ws against poaching (偷猎) were made stronger. Many countries made importing ivory illegal.Killing elephants for their ivory became more risky and less profitable (有利可图的).However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while. In the late 1970s, people protested against the killing of seal babies.Everyone was shocked to see young seals being killed in their icy habitat. The cruel activity stopped. But ten years later, the number of seal babies killed was higher than ever.Other animal protection movements have come and gone, such as saving the whales and protecting dolphins. The whale population appears to have increased for now. And the laws are finally changed in America to protect the dolphins that swim with tuna fish in parts of the Pacific Ocean. In the yea rs to come, people’s attention will probably turn to some other endangered species. Gifted children tend to share three characteristics.First, they develop skills at a very young age.Mozart began composing music when he was just five years old.Second, they are self-starters.Srinivasa Ramanujan was building complex formulas (公式) before he’d even been taught basic mathematics.Third, gifted children can be crazy about their interests. For William James Sidis, a writer, had collected hundreds of street car models and had learned eight kinds of languages by the time he was eight. He was accepted into Harvard University at the age of 11.They would all have been good members of Mensa, an international society for people with the highest IQs. Its youngest member is just two years old.But there can be disadvantages to being so clever.Members of American Mensa are three times more likely than the general public to suffer from allergies (过敏反应) or depression (抑郁症), and they are almost six times more likely to struggle with anxiety. These are just some of the physical and emotional problems that gifted children in particular may face.Noticing those children is important, but many of them are being missed. To find gifted children, you actually have to look for them in all places. The benefits can be huge when those “lost Einsteins” are found.A study has been observing 5,000 gifted people since 1972.All of the children had test scores high enough to get into university when they were just 13.In adulthood, the first 1,650 people went on to publish 85 books, more than 7,500 articles. One-third of the group earned a doctor’s degree that is 17 times larger than the national average. The founder of Google and Lady Gaga were discovered as gifted children. The child geniuses who could change tomorrow’s world are already out there. But will we notice them?12.What do we know about William James Sidis?A.He was only gifted in languages because he could speak eight kinds of languages.B.He was famous for collecting hundreds of street car models.C.He was accepted into a top university at a young age.D.He was a well-known musician.13.According to the passage, what do gifted children tend to do?A.Develop all skills at five.B.Teach themselves everything.C.Put a lot of time and energy into their interests.D.Be members of Mensa when they were 13 years old.14.What can we infer from the passage?A.All the gifted children struggle with physical and emotional problems.B.On national average, about 32 out of 1,650 can earn a doctor’s degree.C.All of the 5,000 gifted people got into university at 13.D.Einstein was lost when he was young.15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?A.How to notice a child genius.B.The lost child geniuses.C.The famous child geniuses.D.The difficulties child geniuses may face.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIn 2018, I was in the Tallahassee, Florida airport waiting to fly to Indiana to see my family. Oh, my God! He was just like a so n.” Then she broke down again. I said a prayer to myself that she and her family could get through the loss. Shortly after that a man came up to us and took the crying stranger by the arm and asked her to go with him. She could barely get up. He took her arm and they walked away.I sat there thinking about what had just happened. I thought about what if that had been me or someone I love. I felt good about being there for the stranger crying. It was the right thing to do.语篇解读给那些因为遭遇人生劫难而陷入痛苦和绝望中的人以理解和安慰吧,即使有时候你们素不相识。

BI live in Arizona. Many things have made me feel good. But the one that made me feel the best was serving the Lord by ministering to (给予援助) the children. You see this started out when I was around 5 years old.The parents of the children in our neighbourhood would lock them out of the house. You can imagine how hot it was most of the time in Arizona. Over the years I would allow the children to come to my house to use the restroom. The children soon learned that the door was always open. These kids ranged in age from 3 to the age of 12.Whenever those same children would get thirsty I would walk in the house and ask my mum, “Mum, may I have 23 glasses of water?” My mum would smile and get me the glasses two by two. Then I would pass them out.Over the years I had an amazing opportunity to teach these same children. For some reason they listened to me and I was able to get them to talk out their differences and not fight. Now I am 22 and when I went to church on the street and helped out with the children. I once again felt like I was in the will of God. I have been blessed beyond belief. I currently teaches and fixes computers. In my free time I develops web pages and studies for my classes. CMost American students go to traditional (传统的) public schools. There are about 88, 000 public schools all over the US. Some students attend charter schools.Charter schools are selfgoverning. Certain companies operate (经营) some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax money just as other public schools do. Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws that govern traditional public schools. Each school can choose its own goals and decide what to teach and how to teach them in their own way. Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools. The government strongly supports charter schools as a way to reorgani ze public schools, which are failing to educate students. But some education unions are against charter schools. One teachers' union has just released the results of the first national study, which compared the progress of students in both traditional schools and charter schools. The results of the study show that charter school students performed worse on math and reading tests than the students in traditional public schools. Some experts say the study is not fair because students in charter schools have more problems than students in traditional schools. Other education experts say the study results would make charter school officials realize that they should help their students make greater progress.语篇解读本文是一篇议论文。
