In my experience, freshmen today are different from those I knew when I started as a professor 25 years ago. College has always been demanding both academically and socially. But students now are less mature and often not ready for the responsibility of being in college. Many of today’s students lack resilience (适应力)and at the first sign of difficulty are unable to think out strategies. The hardship can be a failing grade on a test, a cut from the team, or a romantic breakup. It is really too easy to point the finger at parents who protect their children from life’s obstacles. Parents, who handle every difficulty and every other responsibility for their children from writing admission essays to picking college courses, certainly may contribute to their children’s lack of coping strategies. But we can look even more broadly to the social trends of today. How many people do you know who are on medications (治疗) to prevent anxiety or depression? The number of students who arrive at college already medicated for unwanted emotions has increased dramatically in the past 10 years. We, as a society, don’t want to“feel” anything unpleasant and we certainly don’t wan t our children to“suffer”. The resulting problem is that by not experiencing negative emotions, one does not learn the necessary skills to tolerate and solve problems. Our world is more stressful in general because of the current economic and political re alities, but I don’t believe that the college experience itself is more intense today than the past 10 years. What I do think is that many students are often not prepared to be young “adults”with all the responsibilities of life.As parents, we should expect young people to meet challenges. To encourage them inthis direction, we have to step back and let them fail and pick themselves up and move forward. This approach needs to begin at an early age so that college can actually be a passage to independent adulthood.1. The best title of the text probably is_____A. Have College Freshmen Changed?B. What Should College Faculty and Staff Do Today?C. What Difficulty Are Freshmen Facing?D. How to Get Used to College Life for Freshmen?2. According to the text, today’s freshmen_____.A. are not good at dealing with problemsB. often fail in the examsC. can’t get along well with classmatesD. have to experience more intense college life3. If freshmen become more mature to face and solve problems, they should______.A. experience negative emotions themselvesB. ask parents, teachers and coaches for more helpC. receive medications to prevent anxiety or depressionD. put their hearts and soul into the study4. The text is mainly written for_____.A. teachersB. parentsC. studentsD. psychologists【参考答案】1—4、AAAB阅读理解。

高三英语短文改错练习题

高三英语短文改错练习题Dear students,In order to improve your English writing skills, I have prepared a short passage for you to identify and correct the errors. Please read the following passage and make the necessary corrections. Pay attention to grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. It was raining hardly outside when I suddenly realized that I have forgotten to bring my umbrella. Desperate, I decided to make a dash through the rain and hope to get to the nearest bus stop as quick as possible. But as soon as I had step outside, I regretted my decision. The rain seemed like it was pouring cats and dogs, and I was immediately drenched to the bone.I continued to move forward, even though my shoes were squeaking and my clothes sticking to my body. Finally, I reached the bus stop where several other people have been already waiting. Looking around, I noticed a lady who was clutching her umbrella tightly and seemed unwilling to share it with anyone.Feeling disappointed, I saw that a man next to me has no umbrella too but was not bothered by the rain at all. Instead, he took off his jacket and hand it to the lady, saying, "Please take my jacket. I'll be alright without it."Witnessing this act of kindness, a warm feeling spread thorough my heart. I realized that it can be the small gestures that make a big difference in someone's day. It made me consider about our own actions and how we can help others in their time of need.Suddenly, the bus arrived, and we all hurried to get on board. As I took a seat, I couldn't stop thinking about the man's selfless act. It inspired me to be more mindful of others and to always be willing to lend a helping hand.In conclusion, this experience showed me the importance of kindness and compassion. It reminded me that even in the most challenging situations, a simple act of kindness can create positivity and bring people together. Let's strive to make the world a better place by caring for one another.Good luck with your corrections!。

How is it that siblings (兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differently? One answer is that in fact each sibling grows upin a different family. The firstborn is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father.Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one- on- one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later- borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”.A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love- hate relationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs. One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being morefeminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.1. The underlined part “in a different family” (in Para. 1) means" ______".A. in a different family environmentB. in a different family traditionC. in different family crisesD. in different families2. In terms of language development, later- borns_______ .A. get their parents’individual guidanceB. learn a lot from their elder siblingsC. experience a lot of difficultiesD. pick up words more quickly3. What was found about fights among siblings?A. Siblings hated fighting and loved playing.B. Siblings in some families fought frequently.C. Sibling fights led to bad sibling relationships.D. Siblings learned to get on together from fights.4. The word“feminine” (in Para. 4) means "______".A. having qualities of parentsB. having qualities of womenC. having defensive qualitiesD. having extraordinary qualities【参考答案】1—4、ABDB阅读理解。

河北省昌黎县高考英语学生自选训练(1)(1)

河北省昌黎县2014高考英语学生自选训练(1)及答案社会生活类阅读理解Homeownership has let us down. For generations, Americans believed that owning a home was undoubtedly good. Our political leaders hammered home the point. Franklin Roosevelt held that a country of homeowners was “unconquerable.” Homeownership could even save babies, save children, save families and save America. A house with a lawn and a fence wasn’t just a nice place to live in or a risk-free investment; it was a way to transform a nation. No wonder leaders of all political types wanted to spend more than $100 billion a year on subsidies and tax breaks to encourage people to buy.But the dark side of homeownership is now all too apparent: Indeed, easy lending stimulated by the cult of homeownership may have triggered the financial crisis. Housing remains a drag on the economy. Existing-home sales in April dropped 27% from the pri or month, worsening fears of a double-dip. And all that is just the obvious tale of a housing bubble and what happened when it popped. The real story is deeper and darker still. For the better part of a century, politics, industry and culture lined up to create a fetish of the idea of buying a house.Homeownership has done plenty of good over the decades; it has provided stability to tens of millions of families. Yet by idealizing the act of buying a home, we have ignored the downsides. In the bubble years, lending standards slipped dramatically, allowing many Americans to put far too much of their income into paying for their housing. And we ignored longer-term phenomena too.Homeownership contributed to the hollowing out of cities and kept renters out of t he best neighborhoods. It fed America’sover use of energy and oil. It made it more difficult for those who had lost a job to find another. Perhaps worst of all, it helped us become casually self-deceiving: By telling ourselves that homeownership was a pathway to wealth and stable communities and better test scores, we avoided dealing with these frightening issues head-on.Now, as the U.S. recovers from the biggest housing bust(破产)since the Great Depression, it is time to rethink how realistic our expectations of homeownership are—and how much money we want to spend chasing them. Many argue that homeownership should not be a goal pursued at all costs.1. Political leaders wanted to spend money encouraging people to buy houses because ______.A. owning a home was undoubtedly goodB. homeownership was unconquerableC. houses could save families and AmericaD. homeownership could shape a country2.The underlined sentence in Para. 2 means ______.A. homeownership has quite a lot of bad effectsB. there might be another housing break down in the U.S.C. the existing-home sales wil l keep decreasing in the U.S.D. the result of homeownership is much worse than it appears3.It can be inferred from Para. 3 that ______.A. it is hard for Americans to get a home loanB. it is the way to wealth to have one’s own houseC. many Americans choose to live out of urbanareasD. homeownership has made many people out of work4.What is the author’s attitude towards homeownership?A. 河北省昌黎县高考英语学生自选训练(5)(1)

河北省昌黎县2014高考英语学生自选训练(5)及答案社会生活类阅读理解For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into a series of villages. Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet planes fly people from one e nd of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance.Travel is something to be enjoyed, not endured(忍受) . The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever- changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage wi ndow create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow windows of the airplane. The soft lighting, in- flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly. Then there is the time spent being‘processed’at a modern airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being‘processed’at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high- speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday- maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and the limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed controls people’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.1. Hazel Rymer frequently has to struggle thr ough rainforests, climb to the top of mountains, then climb 200 metres into the crater of active volcanoes. But the 38yearold volcanologist does her best to make it sound less alarming than it is. “Driving to work is more risky,” she insists. “And the deepest I go into the crater of a volcano is about 300 metres,” she adds, trying to make it all sound as ordinary as taking the dog for a walk.Hazel has been studying volcanoes for a long time, so it's not surprising she is used to the danger. Her interest in volcanoes began at school. A teacher gave her a book about Pompeii. “I remember reading about the eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of the city,” she explains. “The thought of all those people just frozen in time had quite an effect on me and I am still excite d by their dangerous beauty today.” Nowadays, volcanoes are getting more and more unpredictable. There have been many changes in sea level caused by global warming and melting ice caps. These have resulted in some dormant volcanoes erupting, so studying them is more dangerous than ever before. Hazel says that although she doesn't take any unnecessary risk, she has had some frightening moments. Her worst experience was on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, when she was slowly surrounded by lava. “I had a c hoice of walking ten hours to get around the lava flow or just walking across it,” she explains. She chose to pick a path across the cooler rocks in the lava stream. “I guess it was five metres. The flow was 1,000°C, so if you hesitated, your boots would b egin to melt. It was scary, but it really was a practical decision—there wasn't time to do anything else.”And what about the future? “I haven't been to the volcanoes in Indonesia yet. And I would love to spend some time working in the Antarctic,” she says. “I would also like to know why quiet lava flows erupt from some volcanoes and why other volcanoes go bang.” In other words, Hazel Rymer won't be exchanging her volcanoes for the relative safety of driving to work just yet.1. Hazel's claim that “driving to work is more risky” than exploring volcanoes shows that ________.A.people have exaggerated the dangers of volcanoes in the pastB.Hazel does not really understand the dangerous situations she puts herself in C.there are many bad drivers in the place where Hazel livesD.Hazel is being modest and understating the dangers she faces2. When did Hazel first become interested in volcanoes?A.When she was visiting Italy.B.When she was at school.C.When she was twenty.D.When she saw Vesuvius.3. The underlined word “These” (in Paragraph 3) refers to “________”.A.melting ice capsB.volcanic eruptionsC.changes in sea levelD.higher temperatures4. When Hazel was on Mount Etna, she had to ________.A.take a dangerous routeB.take an unnecessary riskC.leave her boots behindD.walk for ten hours around the mountain5. In the future, Hazel wants to ________.A.revisit volcanoes she knowsB.go on holiday to the AntarcticC.find a less dangerous jobD.discover new things about volcanoes【参考答案解析】B【要点综述】本文主要介绍了火山学家Hazel Rymer的一些关于火山的研究活动。

Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disppearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unheathy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable(可持续的)ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the healthy while using its supply of natural resources.Today, sustainable development is a popular trend in many countries. Accordingto a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy resolution. It is now trying hard to made full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil(棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuabe rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown more than 50%.Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放) and targets for saving and reusing e nergy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resouces like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge public expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accerlarate the change from the traditional model to a sustainable one.The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.41. The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that____.A.it makes the world warmerB. it consumes natural resoucesC. it brings severe damage to futureD. it makes growth hard to continue42. 河北省昌黎县2014高考英语学生自选训练(2)及答案社会生活类阅读理解Franz Kafka wrote that “a book must be the ax (斧子) for the frozen sea inside us.”I once shared this sentence with a class of seventh graders, and it didn’t seem to require any explanation. We’d just finished John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. When we read the end together out loud in class, my toughest boy, a star basketball player, wept a little, and so did I. “Are you crying? ”one girl asked, as she got out of her chair to take a closer look. “I am, ” I told her,“and the funny thing is I’ve read it many times. ”But they understood. When George shoots Lennie, the tragedy is that we realize it was always going to happen. In my 14 years of teaching in a New York City public middle school, I’ve taught kids with impr isoned parents, abusive parents, irresponsible parents; kids who are parents themselves; kids who are homeless; kids who grew up in violent neighborhoo ds. They understand, more than I ever will, the novel’s terrible logic—the giving way of dreams to fate (命运) .For the last seven years, I have worked as a reading enrichment teac her, reading classic works of literature with small groups of students from grades six to eight.I originally proposed this idea to my headmaster after learning that a former excellent student of mine had transferred out of a selective high school—one that often attracts the literary- minded children of Manhattan’s upper classes—into a less competitive setting. The daughter of immigrants, with a father in prison, she perhaps felt unc omfortable with her new classmates. I thought additional “cultural capital”could help students like her develop better in high school, where they would unavoidably meet, perhaps for the first time, students who came from homes lined with bookshelves, whose parents had earned Ph. D’s.Along with Of Mice and Men, my groups read: Sounder, The Red Pony, Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The students didn’t always read from the expected point of view. About The Red Pony, one student said, “it’s about being a man, it’s about manliness. ” I had never before seen the parallels between Scarface and Macbeth, nor had I heard Lady Macbeth’s soliloquies (独白) read as raps (说唱) , but both made sense; the interpretations were playful, but serious. Once introduced to Steinbeck’s writing, one boy went on to read The Grapes of Wrath and told me repeatedly how amazing it was that “all these people hate each other, and they’re all white. ”His historical view was broadening, his sense of his own country deepening. Year after year, former students visited and told me how prepared they had felt in their first year in college as a result of the classes.Year after year, however, we are increasing the number of practice tests. We are trying to teach students to read increasingly complex texts, not for emotional punch (碰撞) but for text complexity. Yet, we cannot enrich(充实) the minds of our students by testing them on texts t hat ignore their hearts. We are teaching them that words do not amaze but confuse. We may succeed in raising test scores, but we will fail to teach them that reading can be transformative and that it belongs to them.1. The underlined words in Paragraph 1 probably mean that a book helps to_____ .A. realize our dreamsB. give support to our lifeC. smooth away difficultiesD. awake our emotions2. Why were the students able to understand the novel Of Mice and Men?A. Because they spent much time reading it.B. Because they had read the novel before.C. Because they came from a public school.D. Because they had similar life experiences.3. The girl left the selective high school possibly because_____.A. she was a literary- minded girlB. her parents were immigrantsC. she couldn’t fit in with her classD. her father was then in prison4. To the author’s surprise, the students read the novels_____ .A. creativelyB. passivelyC. repeatedlyD. carelessly5. The author writes the passage mainly to____.A. introduce classic works of literatureB. advocate teaching literature to touch the heartC. argue for equality among high school studentsD. defend the current testing system【参考答案】43.DDCAB[社会生活型阅读理解(二)]----BAn “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe(贿赂), but is close to it.All sorts of people are “apple polishers”, including politicians and people in high offices—just about everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed. There are oth er phrases meaning the same thing as “applepolishing”—“s oftsoaping” or “butteringup”. A gift is just one way to “softsoap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise—telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is.Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love to hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who get so little of it.We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But if we just lap it up for its good value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves.Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark andEngland. The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣). They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless power. He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery was.1. Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “applepolishing”?A.A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.B.An employee tells her boss how good he is at management.C.A knight is said to be of limitless power by his followers.D.A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom.2. What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell's example?A.Everybody can be an “applepolisher”.B.Cromwell was not a good “applepolisher”.C.George Fox and his party were not “applepolishers”.D.There are people who don't like being “applepolished”.3. Which of the following statements about flattery is TRUE according to the author? A.Too much flattery can carry us away.B.Flattery is too empty to do people any good.C.Flattery can get you nothing but excessive(过度的) pride.D.Flattery is one of the ways to applepolish people.4. Why did King Canute of Denmark and England take his followers to the seashore? A.Because he was sick of his normal life.B.Because he di sliked being overpraised any more.C.Because he wanted them to realize how wise he was.D.Because he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king.5. Who does the author think that flattery can do good to?A.Those who are politicians or in high offices.B.Those who lack confidence.C.Those who are really excellent.D.Those who think highly of themselves.社会生活类To take the apple as a forbidden fruit is the most unlikely story the Christians (基督教徒) have ever cooked up. For them, the forbidden fruit from Eden is evil (邪恶的) . So when Columbus brought the tomato back from South America, a land mistakenly considered to be Eden, everyone jumped to the obvious conclusion. Wrongly taken as the apple of Eden, the tomato was shut out of the door of Europeans. What made it particularly terrifying was its similarity to the mandrake, a plant that was thought to have come from Hell(地狱) . What earned the plant its awful reputation was its roots which looked like a dried- up human body occupied by evil spirits. Though the tomato and the mandrake were quite different except that both had bright red or yellow fruit, the general population considered them one and the same, too terrible to touch.Cautious Europeans long ignored the tomato, and until the early 1700smost of the Western people continued to drag their feet. In the 1880s, the daughter of a well- known plant expert wrote that the most interesting part of an afternoon tea at her father’s house had been the “introduction of this wonderful new fruit—or is it a vegetable? ”As late as the twentieth century some writers still classed tomatoes with mandrakes as an“evil fruit”.But in the end tomatoes carried the day. The hero of the tomato was an American named Robert Johnson, and when he was publicly going to eat the tomato in 1820, people journeyed for hundreds of miles to watch him drop dead. “What are you afraid of? ”he shouted. “I’ll show you fools that these things are good to eat!”Then he bit into the tomato. Some people fainted. But he survived and, according to a local story, set up a tomato- canning factory.1. The tomato was shut out of the door of early Europeans mainly because .A. it made Christians evilB. it was the apple of EdenC. it came from a forbidden landD. it was religiously unacceptable2. What can we infer from the underlined part in Paragraph 3?A. The process of ignoring the tomato slowed down.B. There was little progress in the study of the tomato.C. The tomato was still refused in most western countries.D. Most western people continued to get rid of the tomato.3. What i s the main reason for Robert Johnson to eat the tomato publicly?A. To make himself a hero.B. To remove people’s fear of the tomato.C. To speed up the popularity of the tomato.D. To persuade people to buy products from his factory.4. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To challenge people’s f ixed concepts of the tomato.B. To give an explanation to people’s dislike of the tomato.C. To present the change of people’s attitudes to the tomato.D. To show the process of freeing the tomato from religious influence.【参考答案】42.DCBC【参考答案解析】B【要点综述】本文论述了现代社会存在的一种普遍现象:人们往往为了自己的一点儿利益去送礼或者说一些阿谀奉承的话,而且有时即使这样做了也未必就能实现自己的愿望。

涿州市高考英语阅读理解、短文改错系列训练〔10〕及答案(第篇)Three years ago, five parrots were set free in a wild place of Arizona, thousands of miles from the Channel Islands in Jersey where they had been looked after by zookeepers. No evolutionary strategies inf ormed them how to behave in this new landscape of mountainous pine forest unoccupied by their kind for 50 years. To the researchers’ surprise, they failed to make contact with a group of wild parrots imported from Mexico and set free at the same time. Within 24 hours the reintroducing ended in failure, and the poor birds were back in cages, on their way to the safety of the Arizona reintroduction programme.Ever since then, the programme has enjoyed great success, mainly because the birds now being set free are Mexican birds illegally caught in the wild, confiscated (没收)on arrival north of the border, and raised by their parents in the safety of the programme. The experience shows how little we know about the behaviour and psychology(心理) of parrots, as Peter Bennett, a bird researcher, points out: “Reintroducing species of high intelligence like parrots is a lot more difficult. People like parrots, always treating them as nothing more than pets or valuable ‘collectables’.〞Now that many species of parrot are in immediate danger of dying out, biologists are working together to study the natural history and the behaviour of this family of birds. Last year was an important turning point:conservationists founded the World Parrot Trust, based at Hayle in Cornwall, to support research into both w ild and caged birds.Research on parrots is vital for two reasons. First, as the Arizona programme showed, when reintroducing parro ts to the wild, we need to be aware of what the birds must know if they are to survive in their natural home. We also need to learn more about the needs of parrots kept as pets, particularly as the Trust’s campaign does not attempt to discourage the practice, but rather urges people who buy parrots as pets to choose birds raised by humans.[语篇解读] 本文通过在亚利桑那州五只鹦鹉被释放的故事,说明了鹦鹉引入方案的重要性以及对鹦鹉生活习性等各方面进行研究的重要性和对鹦鹉进行研究的重要原因。

Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on fact or reason. Examples of prejudice in schools include believing that some students are particular type of people simply because of the way they dress or act, or believing that a certain group is good at sports simply because many peop1e in that group are goad at sports. Another example is believing that a boy is good at science because many boys are good at science.I would like to cite more examples from the English literature. The best example of “prejudice” can be found in Jane Austen’s novels. Her novels in the history of English literature are popularly known as "novels of manners".Thus you can clearly understand that where manners and social behavior are concerned,"prejudice" is inevitable ! Austen' s famous novel Pride and Prejudice is the best example in this respect. When you read the novel, the very first line that would strike you is “it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”It is an example of 18th century English middle class prejudice that eventually looked upon women just as an object that would serve as the basic sign for a man to establish his manliness and his superior and well acquired financial status. This novel is chiefly about class division, social norms and the consequent human behavior. The characters Elizabeth and Darcy,in their journey of 1ife through the course of the novel, highlight their personal prejudices towards one another that arise from their different social strata(阶层).Darcy,a rich man , at first ,fails to admire the beauty and intelligence of Elizabeth because of her low social status:"she is tolerable; but not handsome eno ugh to tempt me;”and Elizabeth, proud of her "first impressions",failed to understand the well natured man under the proud and unfriendly Darcy.1. What is "prejudice" defined in this passage?A. Prejudice is a reasonable idea that is based o n one’s own ex perience.B. Prejudice is a preference for one group of people or things over another.C. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion before becoming aware of fact or reason.D. Prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things.2. The underlined word "inevitable" in the second paragraph probably_means_ .A. unavoidableB. reasonableC. unbelievableD. valuable3.From the novel Pride and Prejudice,we can’t learn that .A. where manners and social behavior are concerned "prejudice" is inevitableB. "prejudice" was defined and compared with“p ride” in 18th centuryC. it's about class division, social norms and the consequent human behaviorD. personal prejudices towards one another arise from different social strata 【参考答案】1—3、CAB阅读理解。

河北省昌黎县2014高考英语学生自选训练(3)及答案阅读理解Awareness Weeks (认知宣传周)have become a regular part of Britain’s cultural landscape over the past few years . They started back in 1957, when one charity (慈善机构), Christian Aid, decided to make all its money-raising efforts on one time of year. It was thought that by doing this they would get more publicity for their cause. They were right, and soon other charities and campaign (活动)groups followed them. These days , most donations(捐款)to charity are not collected on the streets. So instead of just asking for money, charities prefer to spend their time “raising awareness” —spreading knowledge of the work they do or the cause they support . They also compete with businesses and trade groups who use awareness weeks as marketing campaigns for their products. There are now 500 awareness weeks held every year in the UK. No week goes by without one group or another trying to make the British public aware of something, with most held in May or October. The danger with all these awareness weeks is that people start to become cynical(不信任). Take National Smile Week; it seems like a great idea. Let’s all make each other’s life a little bit happier with a friendly smile. But really it’s just a group of dentists and cosmetics companies trying t o sell us toothpaste. It’s enough to make you want to start National Forget About It Week.“People feel that many awareness campaigns are just marketing exercises,” says Ms Ormiston , who edits the Awareness Campaign Register, a news letter which encourages people who run Awareness Weeks to become more aware of each other . “But 90 per cent of campaigns are run by traditional charities or not for groups to make money.”“There’s still no official group for awareness campaigns,” says Ms Ormiston. “People can do what they like, whatever the size of their budgets(经费)or their public relations machines allows .”This situation has led to calls for laws to stop real charities having their efforts overshadowed by marketing campaigns. This could be done by makin g the two groups hold their weeks at different times or stopping businesses running imitation(模仿) charity campaigns. But there is another way. Maybe it’s time for National Weak Awareness Week, especially for people whose awareness of Awareness Weeks is weak.1. What’s the main purpose of awareness weeks run by charities in Britain?A. To raise money for charities.B. To spread knowledge of charities.C. To take up marketing campaigns.D. To advertise their goods for sale.答案解析:答案为A。

河北省昌黎县2014高考英语学生自选训练(4)及答案[科普知识型阅读理解(一)]A blind baby is doubly handicapped. Not only is it unable to see, but because it cannot receive the visual stimulus(刺激)from its environment that a sighted child does, it is likely to be slow in intellectual devel opment. Now the tenmonthold son of Dr and Mrs Dennis Daughters is the subject of an unusual psychological experiment designed to prevent a lag(滞后)in the learning process. With the aid of a sonartype electronic that he wears on his head, infant(婴儿) Dennis is learning to identify the people and objects in the world around him by means of echoes(回声).The device is an improvement of the “Sonicguide”,an instrument produced by Telesensory Systems, Inc., of Palo Alto, Calif, and used by blind adults in addition to a sane or guide dog. As adapted for Dennis, it consists of a batterypowered system about the size of a half dollar that is on a headgear. A transmitter sends out an ultrasonic(超声的) pulse that creates an 80 degree cone of sound at 6 feet. Echoes from objects within the cone are perceived (felt) as sounds that vary in pitch(音调) and volume(音量) with the size and distance of the object. The closer an object is, the lower the pitch, and the larger the object, the louder the signal. Hard surfaces produce a sharp ping, while soft ones send back signals with a slightly fuzzy quality. An object slightly to the right of Dennis' sends back a louder sound to his right ear than to the left. Thus, by simply moving his head right and left and up and down, he can not only locate an object but also get some notion of its shape and size, thanks to the varying qualities of sounds reaching his ears as the cone of ultrasound(超声波) passes its_edge. Dennis likes to use the device to play a kind of peekaboo with his mother. Standing on his knee and facing her directly, he receives a strong signal in both ears. By turning his head away, he makes her seem to disappear. “From the f irst time he wore it,” says Mrs Daughters, “it was like a light going on in his head.”What remains to be determined is how well the device will help Dennis cope with his surroundings as he begins to walk and venture further into his environment. Meanwhile, Telesensory, Inc., is working on the development of sonar(声呐) device with somewhat the same sensitivity as Dennis' for use by schoolage children.1. Dr and Mrs Daughters' research is directed to ________.A.helping the blind to see and learn as well as othersB.benefiting the learning process of blind childrenC.solving blind children's psychological problemsD.finding out how children develop intellectually2. Infant Dennis becomes the subject of the experiment most probably because ________.A.he already lags behind the sighted childrenB.he leads a life as normal as any other childrenC.he is at the early stage of the learning processD.he has the aid of a sonartype electronic device3. What can we learn about infant Dennis' device?A.It's the first design that was designed for blind adults.B.Its battery is as small as a halfdollar coin.C.It is functionally similar to a sane or guide dog.D.It has been improved by Telesensory Systems, Inc.4. In the third paragraph, “its edge” refers to “________”.A.the edge of an objectB.the edge of the deviceC.the boundary of Dennis' movementD.the boundary of the pitch5. What is Telesensory Systems, Inc. most likely to think about infant Dennis' device? A.It had better be used by blind children from school age.B.It needs improving for use in a complicated environment.C.It may not be so suitable for the blind adults.D.It benefits blind children in terms of learning.【参考答案解析】B【要点综述】本文主要介绍了一项针对盲童的学习过程的研究。

“Children should not be left unsupervised(无人监督的)to play with a dog. ”say experts in this week’s British Medical Journal. Their advice is part of a review aimed at doctors who deal with dog bites.“Dog bites and maulings are a worldwide problem, particularly in children. ”write Marina Morgan and John Palmer. Every year 250, 000 people who have been bitten by dogs attend minor injuries and emergency units in the United Kingdom, and half of all children are reportedly bitten by dogs at some time, boys more than girls.Accurate death figures are difficult to obtain, but in the past five years, two to three cases a year have made news headlines.Based on the latest medical evidence, they advise doctors how to examine and treat a patient presenting with a dog bite. They discuss the risk of infection and when to refer to specialist care. For travelers bitten abroad, they suggest assessing the risk of rabies(狂犬病).In terms of prevention, they suggest that children should be taught to treat dogs with respect, avoid direct eye contact, and not tease them. They should be taught not to approach an unfamiliar dog; play with any dog unless under close supervision; run or scream in the presence of a dog; pet a dog without first letting it sniff you; or disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies.“Dog owners also need to change their behavior”, says Rachel Besser, a children’s doctor and lifetime dog owner, in an article.“It is clear that not all dog owners appreciate that children should not be left unsupervised with a dog”, she says. Just as some parents are obliged to take parenting classes, she would like to see compulsive classes for expectant dog owners to teach them about the responsibilities of dog ownership. Educational programs are also needed to teach children about some precautionary behaviors around dogs. Finally, she would like to see vets advising dog owners about bite prevention, and doctors promoting bite prevention when treating patients who have been bitten by dogs.【文章大意】狗咬人, 尤其是狗咬小孩的现象尤其需要引起关注, 为此, 需要采取一定的措施。

Around the world people drink it to relax, reinvigorate and relieve, and it's something we need now more than ever.Even in the United States, a long coffee-dominated country, tea drinking is growing in popularity, with the country consuming 0.4 kilograms (14 ounces) of tea leaves per person a year compared with 0. 36 kilograms(12. 7 ounces) in 2007 according to the United Nations, as people switch away from soda, milk and fruit drinks.Scientists are beginning to look into just how tea might affect mood and cognition. Specifically, they're investigating whether its relaxing and refreshing effects are a direct biological outcome of the compounds in tea or whetherthey come from the context in which the drink is consumed—preparing your tea, choosing your favorite cup and sitting down for a brief break from the world. Or both.Drinking green tea has been found to improve brain function in healthy people, said Stefan Borgward, chair and director of the department of psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Lubeck, Germany. In a 2014 study, he gave one or two cups of green tea to 12 healthy volunteers and imaged their brains to analyze changes in connectivity inside certain brain regions.“We noticed an increased connectivity in regions of the brain associated with working memory,” he said via email. And a 2017 review of more than 100 studies he coauthored found that green tea can impact the brain in three ways: It can influence psychopathological state such as reducing anxiety; cognition by benefiting memory and attention; and brain function, specifically memory. That review concluded that "it would be desirable" for more Westerners to consume at least 100 milliliters(3.3 fluid ounces) of green tea each day “to protect neurocognitive function.”However, Borgward, cautioned that the effects aren't large, and the evidence is mainly provided by small-scale studies.4. How does the author introduce the tendency of drinking in the U.S.?A. By showing examples.B. By explaining reasons.C. By making a comparison.D. By checking existing facts.5. It was Saturday. As always, it was a busy one, for “Six days shall you labor and do all your work” was taken seriously back then. Outside, Father and Mr. Patrick next door were busy chopping firewood. Inside their own houses, Mother and Mrs. Patrick were engaged in spring cleaning.Somehow the boys had slipped away to the back lot with their kites. Now, even at the risk of having Brother caught to beat carpets , they had sent him to the kitchen for string(线). It seemed there was no limit to the heights to which kites would fly today. My mother looked at the sitting room, its furniture disordered for a thorough sweeping, A gun she cast a look toward the window. “Come on, girls! Let’s take string to the boys and watch themOn the way we met Mrs. Patrick, laughing guiltily as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls. There never was such a day for flying kited! We played all our fresh string into the boys’ kites and they went up higher and higher .We could hardly distinguish the orange-colored spots of the kites. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back, watching it dancing up and down it the wind, and finally bringing it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again.Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. Our mothers took their turn, laughing like schoolgirls. I th ink we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty and their dignity; children forgot their everyday fights and little jealousies. “Perhaps it’s like this in the kingdom of heaven,” I thought confusedly. It was growing dark before we all walked sleepily back to house. I suppose we had some sort of supper. I suppose there must have been a surface tidying-up, for the house on Sunday looked clean and orderly enough. The strange thing was, we didn't mention that day afterward. I felt a little embarrassed .Surely none of the others had been as excited as I. I locked the memory up in that deepest part of me where we keep “the things that cannot be and yet they are.”The years went on, then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen in a city apartment, trying to get some work out of the way while my three-year-old insistently cried her desire to “go park ,see duck.”“I can’t go!” I said. “I have this and this to do, and when I’m through I’ll be too tired to walk that for.”My mother, who was visiting us , looked up from the peas she was shelling ,“It’sa wonderful day,” she offered,“Really warm , yet there’s a fine breezy . Do you remember that day we flew kites?”I stopped in my dash between stove and sink. The looked door flew open and with it a rush of memories. “Come on.” I told my little girl. “You’re right, it’s too good a day to miss.”Another decade passed. We were in the aftermath (余波)of a great war. Allevening we had been asking our returned soldier, the youngest Patrick Boy, about his experiences as a prisoner of war. He had talked freely, but now for a long time he had been silent. What was he thinking of – what dark and horrible things?“Say!” A smile slipped out from his lips. “Do you remember --- no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t make the impression on you as it did on me.”I hardly dared speak. “Remember what?”“I used to think of that day a lot in POW camp(战俘营), when things weren’t too good.
