[C]aspect只表示事物的某一方面;[D]instance的常用搭配为in this instance。

at this time与at this point都可表示“这时,当时”,但因为之前并没有发生过类似的事情,所以不用强调说this time“这一次”,[A]也排除;故答案为[B]。

at this point还可用来表示具体的位置,意为“在这点上,在这里”。

34.【解析】选[D]。

本题考查与start连用的词语。

start from“从…着手;从某处或某个水平开始”,只表示一个纯粹的起始点;start与over不连用;start upon“开始做某事,着手处理…”;start with“以…开始”,with表示伴随,暗含事情起初处于某种状态,随后逐渐发展变化的意思。

根据本句的句意,疾病是以发烧的症状开始,随后逐渐加重。

因此,答案为[D]。

Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on Answer Sheet Two.TEXT ADo you realize that every time you take a step, the bones in your hip are subjected to forces between four and five times your body weight? When you are running, this force is increased further still. What happens if through disease a hip-joint ceases to be able to resist such forces? For many years hip-joints and other body joints have been replaceable either partially or completely. It is after all a simple ball and socket joint; it has certain loads imposed on it; it needs reliability over a defined life; it must contain materials suitable for the working environment. Any engineer will recognize these ascharacteristic of a typical engineering problem, which doctors and engineers have worked together to solve, in order to bring a fresh lease of life to people who would otherwise be disabled. This typifies the way in which engineers work to help people and create a better quality of life. The fact that this country has the most efficient agricultural industry in the world is another good example. Mechanical engineers have worked with farmers and biologists to produce fertilizers, machinery and harvesting systems. This team effort has now produced crops uniformly waist high or less so that they are better suited to mechanical harvesting. Similar advances with other crops have released people from hard and boring jobs for more creative work, whilst machines harvest crops more efficiently with less waste. Providing more food for the rapidly increasing population is yet another role for the mechanical engineer.81. According to the passage, when would most weight be imposed onhip-joints?A. When one is walking.B. When one is running.C. When one is standing.D. When one is lying down.82. Engineers regard the replacement of hip-joints as a(n) ____ Problem.A. mechanicalB. medicalC. healthD. agricultural83. According to the passage, how do engineers contribute to increasing efficiency of theagricultural industry?A. By working with farmers.B. By working in teams.C. By growing crops of the same height.D. By making agricultural machinery.84. According to the context, "This team effort'" in Paragraph Two refers toA. mechanical engineers.B. doctors and engineers.C. biologists, doctors and farmers.D. farmers, biologists and engineersTEXT BNowadays, a cellphone service is available to everyone, everywhere. Probably thousands of people have already been using it, but I just discovered it, so I'm going to claim it and also name it: Fake Foning. The technology has been working well for me at the office, but there are infinite applications. Virtually in any public space.Say you work at a big university with lots of talky faculty members buzzing about. Now, say you need to use the restroom. The trip down the hall will take approximately one hour, because a person can't walk into those talky people without getting pulled aside for a question, a bit of gossip, a new read on a certain line of Paradise Lost. So, a cellphone. Any cellphone. Just pick it up. Don't dial. Just hold that phone to your face and start talking. Walk confidently down the hall engaged in fake conversation, making sure to tailor both the topic and content to the person standing before you whom you are trying to evade. For standard colleague avoidance, I suggest fake chatting about fake business:"Yes, I'm glad you called, because we really need to hammer out the details. What's that? Yes, I read Page 12, but if you look at the bottom of 4, I think you can see the problem begins right there."Be animated. Be engaged in your fake fone conversation. Make eye contact with the people passing, nod to them, gesture keen interest in talking to them at a later time, point to your phone, shrug and move on.Shoppers should consider fake foning anytime they spot a talky neighbor in the produce departmentpinching (用手捏) unripe peaches. Without your phone at your face, you'd be in for a 20-minute speech on how terrible the world is.One important caution about fake foning. The other day I was fake foning my way past a colleague, and he was actually following me to get my attention. I knew he wanted to ask about a project I had not yet finished.I was trying to buy myself some time, so I continued fake foning with my doctor. "So I don't need the operation? Oh, doctor, that is the best news."And then: Brrrrrrng! Brrrrrmg! Brrrrrmg! My phone started ringing, right there while it was planted on my face. My colleague looked at me, and I at him, and naturally I gasped. "What is the matter with this thing?" I said, pulling the phone away to look at it, and then putting it back to my ear."Hello? Are you still there?"Oops.85. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?A. Cellphone service is popular among people.B. Cellphone has much use in office.C. Fake foning is a new cellphone service.D. Fake foning is a new discovery.86. What is fake foning?A. A strategy to avoid people.B. A device newly produced.C. A service provided everywhere.D. A skill of communication.87. In the author's opinion, in order to make fake foning look real one has toA. talk about interesting matters.B. behave politely to people passing by.C. hold the phone while walking.D. appear absorbed in conversation.88. What does the last example show?A. One effective way is to fake fone one's doctor.B. One has to be careful while fake foning.C. Fake foning may not deceive people.D. Fake foning is always quite successful.89. After his phone suddenly began ringing, the authorA. immediately started talking to the caller.B. immediately started talking to his colleague.C. put the phone away and stopped talking.D. continued with his fake conversation.90. What is the tone of the passage?A. Critical.B. Humorous.C. Serious.D. Unclear.TEXT CIt was late in the afternoon, and I was putting the final touch on a piece of writing that I was feeling pretty good about. I wanted to save it, but my cursor had frozen. I tried to shut the computer down, and it seized up altogether. Unsure of what else todo, I yanked (用力猛拉) the battery out.Unfortunately, Windows had been in the midst of a delicate and crucial undertaking. The next morning, when I turned my computer back on, it informed me that a file had been corrupted and Windows would not load. Then, it offered to repair itself by using the Windows Setup CD.I opened the special drawer where I keep CDs. But no Windows CD in there.I was forced to call the computer company's Global Support Centre. My call was answered by a woman in some unnamed, far-off land. I find it annoying to make small talk with someone when I don't know what continent they're standing on. Suppose I were to comment on the beautiful weather we've been having when there was a monsoon at the other end of the phone? So I got right to the point."My computer is telling me a file is corrupted and it wants to fix itself, but I don't have the Windows Setup CD.""So you're having a problem with your Windows Setup CD." She has apparently been dozing and, having come to just as the sentence ended, was attempting to cover for her inattention. It quickly became clear that the woman was not a computer technician. Her job was to serve as a gatekeeper, a human shield for the technicians. Her sole duty, as far as I could tell, was to raise global stress levels. To make me disappear, the woman gave me the phone number for Windows' creator, Microsoft. This is like giving someone the phone number for, I don't know, North America. Besides, the CD worked; I just didn't have it. No matter how many times I repeated my story, we came back to the same place. She was calm and resolutely polite. When my voice hit a certain decibel (分贝), I was passed along, like a hot, irritable potato, to a technician."You don't have the Windows Setup CD, ma'am, because you don't need it," he explained cheerfully."Windows came preinstalled on your computer!""But I do need it.""Yes, but you don't have it." We went on like this for a while. Finally, he offered to walk me through the use of a different CD, one that would erase my entire system. "Of course, you'd lose all your e-mail, your documents, your photos." It was like offering to drop a safe on my head to cure my headache. "You might be able to recover them, but it would be expensive." He sounded delighted. "And it's not covered by the warranty (产品保证书)!" The safe began to seem like a good idea, provided it was full.I hung up the phone and drove my computer to a small, friendly repair place I'd heard about. A smart, helpful man dug out a Windows CD and told me it wouldn't be a problem. An hour later, he called to let me know it was ready. I thanked him, and we chatted about the weather, which was the same outside my window as it was outside his.91. Why did the author shut down her computer abruptly?A. She had saved what she had written.B. She couldn't move the cursor.C. The computer refused to work.D. The computer offered to repair itself.92. Which of the following is the author's opinion about the woman at the Global Support Centre?A. She sounded helpful and knowledgeable.B. She was there to make callers frustrated.C. She was able to solve her computer problem.D. She was quick to pass her along to a technician.93. According to the passage, the solution offered by the technician wasA. effective.B. economical.C. unpractical.D. unacceptable.94. "It was like offering to drop a safe on my head to cure my headache" in the last but one paragraph means thatA. the technician's proposal would make things even worse.B. the technician's proposal could eventually solve the problem.C. files stored on her computer were like a safe.D. erasing the entire system was like curing a headache.95. It can be inferred from the passage that the differences between the Global Support Centre and the local repair shop lie in all the following EXCEPTA. efficiency.B. location.C. setup CDs.D. attitudeTEXT DNot long ago, a mysterious Christmas card dropped through our mail slot. The envelope was addressed to a man named Raoul, who, I was relatively certain, did not live with us. The envelope wasn't sealed, so I opened it. The inside of the card was blank. Ed, my husband, explained that the card was both from and to the newspaper deliveryman. His name was apparently Raoul, and Raoul wanted a holiday tip. We were meant to put a check inside the card and then drop the envelope in the mail. When your services are rendered at 4 a.m., you can't simply hang around, like a hotel bellboy expecting a tip. You have to be direct. So I wrote a nice holiday greeting to this man who, in my imagination, fires The New York Times from his bike aimed at our front door, causing more noise with mere newsprint than most people manage with sophisticated black market fireworks. With a start, I realized that perhaps the reason for the 4 a.m. wake-up noise was not ordinary rudeness but carefully executed spite: I had not tipped Raoul in Christmases past. I honestly hadn't realized I was supposed to. This was the first time he'd used the card tactic. So I got out my checkbook. Somewhere along the line, holiday tipping went from an optional thank-you for a year of services to a Mafia-style protection racket (收取保护费的黑社会组织).Several days later, I was bringing our garbage bins back from the curb when I noticed an envelope taped to one of the lids. The outside of the envelope said MICKEY. It had to be another tip request, this time from our garbage collector. Unlike Raoul, Mickey hadn't enclosed his own Christmas card from me. In a way, I appreciated the directness. "I know you don't care how merry my Christmas is, and that's fine," the gesture said. "I want $30, or I'll 'forget' to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day."I put a check in the envelope and taped it back to the bin. The next morning, Ed noticed that the envelope was gone, though the trash hadn't yet been picked up: "Someone stole Mickey's tip!" Ed was quite certain. He made me call the bank and cancel the check. But Ed had been wrong. Two weeks later, Mickey left a letter from the bank on our steps. The letter informed Mickey that the check, which he had tried to cash, had been cancelled. The following Tuesday morning, when Ed saw a truck outside, he ran out with his wallet. "Are you Mickey?"The man looked at him with scorn. "Mickey is the garbageman. I am the recycling." Not only had Ed insulted this man by hinting that he was a garbageman, but he had obviously neglected to tip him. Ed ran back insidefor more funds. Then he noticed that the driver of the truck had been watching the whole transaction. He peeled off another twenty and looked around, waving bills in the air. "Anyone else?"Had we consulted the website of the Emily Post Institute, this embarrassing breach of etiquette (礼节) could have been avoided. Under "trash/recycling collectors" in the institute's Holiday Tipping Guidelines, it says: "$10 to $30 each." You may or may not wish to know that your pet groomer, hairdresser, mailman and UPS guy all expect a holiday tip.96. The newspaper deliveryman put a blank card inside the envelope becauseA. he forgot to write a few words on it.B. he wanted the couple to send it back.C. he used it to ask for a Christmas tip.D. he was afraid of asking for a tip in person.97. From the passage, we learn that the authorA. didn't like Raoul's way of delivering the paper.B. didn't realize why Raoul delivered the paper that way.C. didn't know that Raoul came very early in the morning.D. didn't feel it necessary to meet Raoul when he came.98. According to the passage, the author felt ____ to give Raoul a holiday tip.A. excitedB. delightedC. embarrassedD. forced99. Which of the following is CORRECT about Mickey, the garbage collector?A. He wrote a letter to the couple afterwards.B. He failed to collect the money from the bank.C. He wanted the couple to send him a Christmas card.D. He collected both the cheek and the garbage that day.100. Ed's encounter with the recycling team shows thatA. Ed was desperate to correct his mistake.B. Ed only wanted to give money to Raoul.C. Ed was unwilling to tip the truck driver.D. Ed no longer wanted to give them money.PART VI WRITING [45 MINI]SECTION A COMPOSITION [35 MIN]Tourism is a booming business in China. It’s time to get togethor with friends or family and welcome in the coming year. New Year’s parties can take place in different places. Some people hold a house party; others attend street parties, while some just go for a few drinks with their friends. Big cities have large and spectacularfireworks displays. There is one thing that all New Year’s Eve parties have in common, the countdown to midninght. When the clock strikes 12, people give a loud cheer and sing songs. It’s also popular to make a promise in the New Year. This is called a New Year’s resolution. Typical resolutions include giving up smoking and keeping fit. However the promise is often broken quite quickly and people are back into their bad habits within weeks or days.1. B2.C3.D4.C5. A6.D7.B8.C9. A 10.D11.C 12.A 13.B 14. B 15. So I think my results show that I have some ability in logic and in mathematics as well.W: So, you would like to write material for computers, would you?M: Yes, madam. That's what interests me most about computers - writing programs, but I think the computer industry itself is still expanding enormously. The train now standing at Platform 9 is the 10:48 train calling at all stations to Nanjing. Please note the train on Platform 9 is not the 10:52 train to Jinan. It's the 10:48 train calling at all stations to Nanjing. The 10:52 to Jinan will now leave from Platform 7. Train announcement, the 11:20 train to Zhengzhou from Platform 8 will be subject to a 15-minute delay. I re peat there will be a 15-minute delay for the Zhengzhou train on Platform 8. It will now leave at 11:35, not 11: 20. The 11:28 train to Hangzhou has been cancelled. We apologize to customers, but due to signal problems, the 11:28 train to Hangzhou from Platform 15 has been cancelled. The 11:32 train to Tianjin is now standing at Platform 13. Please note, there will be no restaurant car on this train. I repeat: there will be no restaurant car on the 11:32 to Tianjin now standing at Platform 13.Questions 14 to 16 are based on the following passage. The International Red Cross in Red Crescent Museum was opened in Geneva in 1988. It tells the story of men and women who in the course of the major events of the last 150 years have given assistance to victims of war and natural disasters. The organization was established in 1863 and was based on the idea by a Swiss businessman called Henry Durant. He had witnessed the heavy casualties of the battle of Solferino in Italy four years earlier, in which 40,000 people were killed, wounded or missing. He had seen the lack of medical services in the great suffering of many of the wounded who simply died from lack of care. The International Red Cross or Red Crescent exists to help the victims of conflicts and disasters regardless of their nationalities. The symbol of the organization was originally just a red cross. It has no religious significance. The founders of the movement adopted it as a tribute to Switzerland. However, during the rest of the Turkish war, the Turks felt that the cross could be seen as a fence to the Muslim soldiers and the second symbol, the red crescent, was adopted for use by national organizations in the Islamic world. Both are now official symbols.Questions 17 to 20 are based on the following passage. At major college or high school sports events, cheerleaders, both male and female, jump and dance in front of the crowd, and shout the name of their team, running around, yelling "Go Team Go!" The first cheerleader ever was a man. In 1898, Johnny Campbell jumped in front of the crowd at the university of Minnesota and shouted for his team. He shouted "Hurrah, Minnesota!" This was the first organized show, or yell. For the next 32 years, cheerleaders were men only. Cheerleading is not just about cheering. They practice special shows, dances, and athletic shows. The men throw the women high in the air, and catch them. The team members climb on each other's shoulders to make a human pyramid. They yell and dance too. It is like human fire works. Of course, they may often suffer serious knee and wrist injuries and bloody noses. Cheerleaders have their own contests every year at local, state and national levels. And a crowd shouts for them. It is not fair to think cheerleading is just being cheerful and lively and having a loud voice. Cheerleading is a sport in itself.SECTION C NEWS BROADCASTQuestions 21 and 22 are based on the following news. The bodies of dozens of African emigrants discovered off the Italian coast last week might have been thrown overboard, Italian officials said on Monday. What does the man think of the solution?PassagePassage 1Attracting and feeding wild birds are entertaining activities that have long been enjoyed by people all over the world. Feeding birds has become so popular that prepared feed mixtures are readily available. We feed birds for many reasons. Many pleasant hours can come from watching birds. A hobby often develops into a serious study of their habits. Accurate identification of birds is usually the first goal. But observations that an amateur bird-watcher can make are really limitless. There is, however, responsibility associated with bird feeding, including a disease hazard. Attracting numbers of birds continually to the same spot can be harmful to them, particularly species that pick food from the ground contaminated by the droppings of other birds. In winter feeding efforts are most satisfying to people and are of greatest benefit to birds. During this time when fewer natural foods are available and air temperatures are lower, extra feeding can keep a bird warm and well. Once begun, feeding should never stop during these lean months. If you start a local increase of birds, be prepared to do what may be required to eliminate hazards to those you want to befriend. A constant supply of food should be given until the cold is over and spring has come. If feeding is stopped during severe weather, birds used to relying upon the feeders must starve.Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.Q26 What does the speaker say about bird watching?Q27 What does the speaker say about birds fed continually on the same spot?Q28 What does the speaker suggest we do in feeding birds in winter?Passage 2My friend Leo makes up weak and poor excuses whenever there is something he doesn’t want to do. Just two weeks ago, he was at my house when he decided he didn’t want to gointo work. He called his boss and said he had to get a new set of tires put on his truck. Then he sat down and watched TV with me. Not only had he lied but his excuse wasn’t a very convincing one. Another time, he cancelled a date with his girlfriend at the last minute telling her he had to get a new battery for his truck. She was angry and refused to go out with him again until he apologized. Last weekend, Leo offered the poorest excuse yet. He’d promised he’d help me move some furniture, from my parents’ house to my new apartment. He was supposed to bring his truck over about 8 o’clock Saturday morning. I waited, and then called and left a message on his machine. About 11:30, he called and said he was sorry but he’d been getting a new set of tires put on his truck. I guess he’d forgotten he used the same excuse when he called his boss from my house. I think I need a new set of friends. I’m beginning to get tired of Leo’s excuses.Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.Q29 What does the speaker tell us about her friend Leo?Q30 What did his girlfriend do when Leo canceled a date with her at the last minute?Q31 What favor did the speaker ask Leo to do last weekend?Passage 3In Hollywood, everybody wants to be rich, famous and beautiful. Nobody wants to be old, unknown and poor. For Hollywood kids, life can be difficult because they grow up such an unreal atmosphere. Their parents are ambitious and the children are part of the parents’ambitions. Parents pay for wasteful grand parties, expensive cars and designer clothes. When every dream can come true, kids don’t learn the value of anything because they have everything. A thirteen-year-old boy, Trent Maguire, has a driver, credit cards and unlimited cash to do what he wants when he wants to. “One day, I’ll earn more than my dad!”he boasts. Parents buy care and attention for their children because they have no time to give it themselves. Amender’s mother employs a personal trainer, a bodyguard, a singing coach and a councilor to look after all her fifteen-year-old daughter’s needs. Often, there is no parent at home most days, so children decide whether to make their own meals or go out to restaurants, when to watch television or do homework. They organize their social life. They play no childhood games. They become adults before they’re ready. Hollywood has always been the city of dreams. The kids there live unreal lives where money, beauty and pleasure are the only gods. Will children around the world soon start to think the same? Or do they already?Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.Q32 Why is life said to be difficult for Hollywood kids?Q33 What does the speaker say about Trent Maguire, a thirteen-year-old boy?Q34 Why does Amender’s mother employ other people to look after her needs?Q35 What will probably have negative effects on the lives of Hollywood kids?Compound DictationAround 120 years ago, Ebbinghaus began his study of memory. He concentrated on study ing how quickly the human mind can remember information. One result of his research is known as the total time hypothesis, which simply mean the amount you learn depends on the time you spend trying to learn it. This can be taken as our first rule of learning. Although it is usually true that study ing for 4 hours is better than study ing for 1, there is still the question of how to use the 4 hours. For example, is it better to study for 4 hours straight or to study for 1 hour a day for 4 days in a row? The answer, as you may have suspected, is that it is better to spread out the study times. This phenomenon through which we can learn more efficiently by dividing our practice time is known as the distribution of practice effect. Thus, our second rule of learning is this. It’s better to study fairly briefly but often. But we are not finished yet. We haven’t considered how we should study over very short periods of time. Let’s say you are trying to learn some new and rather difficult English vocabulary using a stack of cards. Should you look at the same word in rapid succession or look at the word and then have some delay before you look at it again? The answer is it is better to space up the presentations of the word you are to learn.参考答案Part I WritingFree Admission to MuseumsNowadays, an increasing number of museums are admission-free to visitors home and abroad. The hidden reason behind this is not hard to analyze as there’s a growing awareness for the authorities regarding the urgency of popularization of culture, knowledge and history with every average person in our society. Only with free access to this live ‘database’, can most people fully enjoy what museums could offer to them. However, free admission to museums might lead to some social problems as well. The most obvious problem is that it might give museums a very heavy economic burden which directly impedes the sustainable development of these organizations. As a result, our government has to work out other ways to collect funds from different channels, which might be difficult to operate or control. On the other hand, free admission attracts too many visitors, some of which might not be well-purposed and do some conscious or unconscious damage to the valuable treasures which used to be well-preserved in the museums. As a university student, I am in favor of the free-admission conduct. Yet it is proposed that some measures should be taken to solve the potential problems caused by it. For example, museums can make some regul ations to guide the behavior of visitors or set some ‘closed’ days for museums for regular maintenance. Only in this way can free-admission to museums become a long-lasting phenomenon and have sustainable development.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)阅读答案1. A. In my opinion. the main difference lies in the fact that we enjoy more independence at college. As far as I'm concerned, I prefer the college life to the middle school life. For one thing, I live on my own:wash my own clothes, buy my own food, looking myself. I make my daily decisions of my own will. For another, I depend heavily on myself in my study. I have plenty of free time outside the classroom. In order to achieve academic success, I can derive as much from the teachers' lectures as from my own diligence. In the absence of pressure from both the college and the family, I must have a workable plan of my own.To sum up, I live a quite different life at college from that in my middle school in that I am much more responsible for my own life and study. To those newcomers, 1 would suggest they break away from their parents' tender care and stand on their own feet.参考答案(1997)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONMore Pressure From Academic Studies Does No Good To UsNowadays, we may often hear people around us complain that they are under great pressure in their daily life. It is true that no pressure, no motivation. But, how about much more pressure? Different people have different views of point. As for me, I firmly think too much pressure in essence prevents people from achieving academic accomplishment rather than do good to us.The causes are obvious. Firstly, in our opening society, people have to acquaint with a vast number of new things so as to obtain better lives, which request them transferring more times from academic studies to other fields, lessening their academic pressure. Secondly, more pressure from academicstudies will make people produce mental problems such as stress and qualm, in the long run, which will make academic studies become impossible. Therefore in my opinion, those who would achieve academic accomplishment must not be given more pressure. It is a good academic air that does good to us.参考答案(1998)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONOne Way to Solve the ProblemWe all know that vehicles are the major source of air pollution in cities. To solve the headache, people have taken a variety of steps, but the result is not satisfying. Here, one way to solve the problem is to set gas thriftier in vehicle.Setting gas thriftier in vehicle not only decreases the consumption of gas which is a major source of air pollution but also slows down the cost of possessing a vehicle which makes millaye price lower. Thereby, all vehicles set gas thriftier will make air have a lower carbon dioxide content deriving from burning gas and coal. The less carbon dioxide, the less air pollution. Therefore, through setting gas thriftier, vehicles will bum lower gases, and the problem will partly be solved.Despite other ways to solve the problem, I think the best way is to set gas thrifter in vehicle for both effect and practice.参考答案(1999)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONA Major Disadvantage of Advertising on TelevisionWith the development of advertising, our television programs are flooded with numerous advertisements every day. In my opinion, advertising on television is a negative force in society because they create all kinds of impossible fantasies and they are often dishonest and offensive. In the first place, ads always show happy, rich people, and they make life look easy. However, life is not always easy; on the contrary, it is often very difficult. Not all people live in big and beautiful houses and dress in fashionable clothes. Advertising gives the audience an untruthful picture of reality; therefore, it acts as a distorted social mirror.Secondly, television programs are constantly interrupted by ads, which is annoying and offensive to the majority of audience. If TV stations need money, can’t they come up with better ways instead of advertising? All in all, advertisement on television is a form of pollution. They invade our visual space and they are a great nuisance.参考答案(2000)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONPeople have different ideas about how students should spend their school days. Some believe that students should spend the whole day on academic studies. Others believe that extracurricular activities should be a required part of every school day. I think both ways have their advantages. But I prefer the latter. As a student, our main task is to concentrate on our academic study. We have to attend classes, reading books and doing assignments. Only by working hard can we learn our courses well. But I don‟t think we should spend every hour and minute on academic study. A proverb says, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Without good health and strong body, how can we improve our study efficiency and make great achievements in our ac ademic study? Besides, spending the whole day on academic study may make us exhausted and weak. We should find other meaningful things to do besides studying. For example, doing extracurricular activities can make students‟ life more colorful and beneficial. There are various forms of exercise. M y favorite one is football. I play football with my classmates for one hour every afternoon. After a day‟s hard work, how nice it is to stretch my arms and legs! By playing football I‟ve got both joy and strength. I always lookActually doing extracurricular activities doesn‟t disturb our study if we make full use of our time. Instead it does help us study more efficiently. We can be good at learning as well as extracurricular activities. So I suggest that students do extracurricular activities along with thei参考答案(2001)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONNowadays, travel has become a popular activity. More and more people have enough money to travel abroad or at home. As a matter of fact, travel has become part of our life. This situation is encouraging, for it not only broadens people's minds to the extend which may not be reached previously, but alsoOne of my best friends is so exclusively engaged in his works that he did not even know what was happening out of his own discipline. What‟s worse, his progress was nearly little. After accepting my advice, he traveled a few cities and towns. The experience gave him a good opportunity of learning. Today, he gets a bumper harvest in his knowledge——In conclusion, travel opens our mind because it enables us to know about the history and culture of a nation. In a way, going on travels is like reading books.参考答案(2002)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONThe Best Way to Stay HealthyNowadays people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of health. And they have different ways to stay healthy. For example, For my part, the best way to stay healthy is the combination of proper physical exercise and a balanced diet. Both physical exercise and a proper diet are essential to health. For one thing, physical exercise not only builds a person‟s body, but also helps to reduce his or her unnecessary fat. Indeed, this is very important since the redundancy of fat has been medically proved to be a cause of various diseases, some of which are even fatal. For another, a balanced diet can provide a person with the right kind and amount of nutrition required for the operation of our organs. As we know, a multitude of elements are effective in keeping our body running properly. A deficiency in any of them will result in some dysfunction. Yet a balanced diet may prevent this from happening. All in all, I believe the best way to keep fit is talking proper physical exercise plus staying on a balanced diet. Neither is dispensable if we are to enjoy sustainable health.参考答案(2003)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONThe Importance of Keeping a Good MoodModern people are supposed to endure a lot of pressure, from education, career, or family. However, not all people can manage to tide them over. There are often reports of someone going insane or someone committing suicide. Those unfortunate people are not intelligently poor. Yet they were doomed only because they suffered troubled minds or mixed feelings. From their experiences, I would argue that keeping a good mood is all too important.Living in a good mood under whatsoever circumstances is important in at least two ways. For one thing, it can help one foster friendly interpersonal relation.Instead of treating colleagues or classmates as rivals or opponents, one will try to cooperate with them and benefit from them. One will work harder to keep paces with others or surpass them rather than complaining or get consumed by jealousy all the time. For another, a good mood can help one put disappointments and frustrations in the right perspective. Thinking that failure is the mother of success, one can well survive the temporary blows and look forward to the bright future. Both friendship and optimism derived from keeping a good mood or mentality are effective outlets for pressures whatsoever. Thus, we need not only to build a strong body but also keep a good mood in order to face the pressures or challenges of modern society. While most people are aware of the importance of the former, quite a proportion of people fail to recognize the significance of the latter.参考答案(2004)PART I WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONLetter Writing Will Not Be KilledNowadays, young people choose to phone each other rather writing letters. But even if so, I still maintain that letter writing will never be killed by phones, though we have stepped into the Information Age.First, letters can express your subtle feelings. With the increase of the living pace of modern society, we find that there is a lack of communication now. Sometimes when you are speaking to someone that you care and love on the phone, you are so shy that it‟s too hard to express any of your feelings towards him/her. Your throat seems to be blocked! At this time, letters will help. Without any embarrassment, you can just write down your deep concern and love on a piece of paper. When you drop the letter into the pillar-box, you will feel what he/she will receive is not only a letter, but also your deepest love. Secondly, letters can be kept as a record of memory, while phones cannot. Just imagine, when you open an old box of letters and read them years later, a lot of beautiful and indelible memories will be brought back to you. What an irreplaceable feeling it is! And I believe, this feeling is something that you can definitely never experience through several phone calls. All in all, letter writing will absolutely survive and even thrive in the Information Age. Phones can never kill it, neither will anything.参考答案(2005)PART VI WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONMy Idea of a University Arts FestivalAn arts festival will no doubt add much to our campus life, since it, like other group activities, will be a stage on which students from different colleges and departments communicate and share their interests. This festival, of course, needs to be well organized, so as to get everyone involved. While all kinds of activities contribute to this great festival, lectures by leading artists in this country will surely make it more successful.First of all, influential …stars‟ are always an attraction to involve the greatest number of participants. The main purpose of this festival, just as other campus activities, is to add variety to students‟ life. Its results and influence need to be measured more by the number of p articipants than by their artistic level it will display. The more people get involved, the more successful the festival. While a few of the students are busy performing during the festival, lectures permit the majority to sit there listening and asking their …masters‟ questions.Secondly, face-to-face communication between students, some of whom are potential artists, and the leading artists is always a bridge linking textbook knowledge and practice. University students spend most of their time learning from textbooks or at the library, but knowing how to do is quite different from doing it. The experience of and advice from those practitioners in the fields of music, movie, and painting help university students to think what else they need to learn and what they will do in the future. What‟s more, lectures by well-known experts will enhance the influence of the arts festival and the university. Arts festivals are held in many universities in the city, but they are organized in more or less the same way. As far as I know, lectures are seldom part of them. Therefore, it will promote the reputation of our festival, which is a new comer in the city.In a word, it will be beneficial to invite some experts to give lectures. It will get more students to get involved, students will benefit from lectures by experts, and it will draw more public attention to the festival.参考答案(2006)SECTION A COMPOSITIONUsing Tomorrow's MoneySome of you may have heard about the story of two old ladies. One said before taking the last breath with a sigh, "Finally I've saved enough money to buy an apartment" ; the other remarked with a relieved smile, "At last I've paid off all the mortgage for my house. " This make-up story vividly shows two different attitudes of consumption; saving money or using tomorrow's money. Personally I would rather use tomorrow's money so as to enjoy a quality life before it is too late. With the rapid development of market economy and increasing income, China has already entered a consumption era and it is natural for people to seek after material things and pleasure. Using tomorrow's money will help people satisfy their needs. For example, nowadays the housing in Beijing is getting more and more expensive; as a result, lots of young people cannot afford a decent apartment. To solve the problem we can borrow money from the bank. With the bank loan, we can have our own shelter right away, which will definitely facilitate our life and work a great deal. Moreover, using tomorrow's money can also help those in difficulties, ensure them a better future. In some rural areas in China, quite a few talented students might lose the opportunity of higher learning simply because they could not pay their college tuition in the past. Now by asking for loans from the government, more students are able to attend college, which will offer them a brighter future.Surely using tomorrow's money cannot only meet the urgent needs of a group of people, but also enable some enjoy a better life earlier. But we need to be realistic about the burden we can shoulder at the same time when spending tomorrow's money because the "debt" has to be paid back some day in the future.参考答案(2007)SECTION A COMPOSITIONOnline Friends, Live ResourcesAs I see it, making friends online should be encouraged, especially for English learners in China. Online communication with native speakers of English can significantly increase one's knowledge in English and the foreign culture , and more importantly, the motivation in learning and using the language. To begin with, online chatting is a simulation of everyday conversation in real life, which greatly improves the participants' English. When connected to the Internet, English is the only language to communicate with others. And one is forced to exhaust his repertoire of English to express ideas and feelings, and to keep the conversation going. In this virtual environment, one learns the basic expressions and techniques of English communication much faster than in English classes. Furthermore, while the knowledge of the language itself increases through online chatting, one also receives abundant cultural information from his foreign friends. As the interest in culture is one important stimulus to learn a language, talking with natives from the English culture sure helps to enhance one's interest in the culture, and thus encourages him to learn more. People against making key pals seem to worry about the risks of making bad friends. But it is just so simple to ignore those with bad intent by dragging them into the blacklist, while keeping in touch with kind and helpful people. As long as one does not leak his private information, it is totally safe to explore online.Making online friends not only helps to improve one's English proficiency, but also encourages one to learn more about the English culture. It is a method worth promoting for English learners to improve language studies as well as broaden their views.参考答案(2008)PART VI WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONBenefits of V olunteeringI'm more than glad to see that an increasing number of people are willing to help the people in need. And I firmly believe that volunteering can enhance their ability to tackle problems. As we can see, thousands of college students are flocking to rural areas as temporary teachers. There is no doubt that tons of problems are awaiting: lack of food, poor living conditions, etc. So, they need to take great pains to overcome the problems. For example, they have to get used to the simple food with strong will-power, and prepare lessons in poor light. What's more, students there might not cooperate with them well, so they have to figure out a way to interest them, get them involved so as to teach them more effectively. It must be extremely hard for the volunteers to fit in at the beginning, but as they accumulate more experience, they will work out problems successfully. To sum up, volunteering will not only help those in need, but also enhance volunteers' capability when they face difficulties. So, put on your coat, pick up your bag, and go volunteering!参考答案(2009)PART VI WRITINGSECTION A COMPOSITIONWill Tourism Bring Harm to the Environment? As an economic activity, tourism in recent years has developed rapidly in China. Tourism reflects human's explorations of nature, which has led to economic development on the one hand and environmental destruction on the other. While economy grows, environment destruction also grows, as a result of ceaseless tapping of natural resources and continuous increase of the number of tourists. How does tourism bring harm to the environment? Firstly, over exploitation of new scenic spots will change ecological system, which will consequently cause environmental degeneration. In order to attract tourists, plenty of man-made sceneries have been built, due to which the natural conditions have been destroyed. One example is Qinghai Lake, its environmental degeneration in the form of expansion of desert areas and extinction of some rare animals. According to a research report, tourism should take partial responsibility for this harmful result. In one word, reckless tapping of natural resources will break ecological balance.Secondly, a large proportion of tourists, most of the time, play the role of environment destructor. They do not have the awareness of environment protection. So it is very common to see them throw garbage wherever they go. And then it is reported that some originally beautiful and clear lake became ugly and dirty, which conduces to various bacteria. Some of the tourists even have a weird habit of eating wild animals, whose practice, to some extent, encourages the killing of wildlife. All the above-listed behaviors and, many others gravely damaged our environment. On all accounts, harm that tourism brings to the environment has already been seen and will become more serious if tourism industry keeps developing in an uncontrolled manner. So what we should do in the current situation is to try to make a sustainable developmental plan, through whose implementation the balance between economic growth and environment protection can be maintained.。
