Leonards asks me to sit in front of Jules. As I do, he looks me in the eye and starts to move his face through a series of emotions-happy, confused, surprised, glaring. I'm attracted by his display, feeling delight when hegrinsand feeling serious when his eyes narrow angrily. None of this would be a surprise, of course, if Jules were a human. But he's a robot head on a table. The most special thing is that, consciously(有意识地), there's no mistaking Jules for a real person. Although he has surprisingly realistic skin, his eyes don't fit firmly against his lids, and he has a terrible hairpiece. Yet, as I walk into the room, I experience a complex worry of feeling in his direction. It's not at all like entering an empty space. It's a bit awkward for Jules’ shining false hair. Some unconscious part of me is responding to him as if he's real. This matters, because if we're to one day live comfortably along with robots , an understanding of how we instinctively(本能地) react to them is significant. The study of these issues is the frontier of a new scientific research; human-robot interaction.Jules was built as part of an attempt to understand the emotions that can be communicated by a human. “All the robots we'vebuilt so far don't have that rich emotions. We wanted to build a robotic face, with small motors that mimic(模仿) all the muscles you have, so we could discover what it could express. "Such research is becoming increasingly important, says Dr. Leonards, partly because our rapidly ageing population will soon need the help of robots with which they can effortlessly interact.4. What does the author think of Jules?A. He ignored him in his place.B. He didn't treat him as only a robot.C. He was afraid of his being there.D. He mistook him for a real person.5. What is the purpose to build such a robot?A. To help humans of old ages.B. To carry out a scientific research.C. To take the place of human labour.D. To make an interaction with human.6. What doesthe underlined word “grins” mean in Paragraph1?A. Smiles.B. Shakes.C. Worries.D. Cries.7. What may be the best title for the text?A. Human And RobotB. Success Of Making A RobotC. Robot Will Replace ManD. Difference Between Man And RobotCDad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he wouldsmile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”I was more than happy to do it. At age five this mundane task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet.About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. He didn’t come home as much as he used to – just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.Today, I’m no longer a kid. I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has got back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted. Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said, “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb?” I looked at him a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.I passed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still organizes his personal items in the same meticulous way. I guess some things never change. And for that, I’m glad.8. What caused the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me?A. Generation gap.B. Dad’s failure in business.C. My ignorance of Dad.D. Dad’s absence from the family.9. Which of the following can best describe Dad?A. Gentle but strict.B. Hardworking and caring.C. Cautious and realistic.D. Demanding but patient.10. Why did Dad ask his daughter to clean his comb before her birthday?A. To give her a lesson.B. To follow his old habit.C. To fix their relationship.D. To praise her helpfulness.11. Which saying concludes the text best?A. Yesterday once more.B. Let bygones be bygones.C. Some things never change.D. Like father, like daughter.DMany of us were delighted to learn that a high school senior Kwasi Enin was accepted to all eight Ivy League universities. To our surprise, he wasn't excited as expected, but appeared extra calm. He announced that he would revisit the universities to find the best suitable in music or medicine. He also wanted to compare their financial aid packages.Kwasi's success story is rare, but his reaction is not. After the admission letters arrive at home, students have 30 days to really think about what kind of school would help them grow as a person, which school would best prepare them for the future, and at which school they would be happiest. And they also have to think about whether they can afford the school they choose. But how to answer the questions about which school is the best suitable university? Some young people are attracted to large universities with great school spirit and a list of offerings. But besides those advantages, many of these universities focus on graduate work and research, with undergraduates taught mostly by part-time instructors. Others are attracted to smaller boarding schools with discussion-based classes. But some of these schools will have much limitation for students who want a high-energy city life experience. Many students today seem to think they should pick the university where they will get the diploma that will help them get the most highly paid job. This is a sad misunderstanding of what a college education should provide.A good college education should prepare them to overcome any difficulty andthrivein society. It helps them to form the habit of creative mind and spirit that will continue to develop far beyond their university years. So whenyou choose college, you should consider if it is filled with useful learning to help create new spaces for different possibilities of growth.12. What can we know about Kwasi Enin from paragraph 1?A. He was from a very poor family.B. He would choose the top university.C. He was too excited to calm himself at the good news.D. He considered his interests when choosing his university.13. What can you infer from paragraph 2?A. Few students can be admitted to university.B. Many students face the choices like Kwasi.C. Top universities are the first choice for most students.D. American students can afford their university by themselves.14. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 4?A. FailB. SucceedC. ResearchD. Work15. What should the best university be like according to the text?A. Very large and have good instructors.B. Small boarding schools with discussion-based classes.C. It will offerthe diploma to get the most highly paid job.D. It will help continue to develop far beyond university years.

A trip to Peru has been on my wish list for quite a while. It was finally time for me to visit the country. My first day started in Lima, the capital of Peru. I met with the G Adventures representative (代表) here about the tour. G Adventures is an organization that helps you to connect with other like-minded people in small group-based travel adventures. They played a big part in helping to make Peru an unforgettable experience for me! In Lima, my representative discussed the plan of my tour, and I also had the chance to explore Lima in my own time, with many activities, including a city tour, show, biking tour, and more.Day two had me taking a flight from Lima to Cusco. Many people visit Cusco for shopping but for me, the main reason for spending a day or two in Cusco was to acclimatize (适应) to the altitude (海拔). As I’d decided to reach the wonder of Machu Picchu, acclimatizing became important to avoid altitude sickness. I was happy to spend a day exploring Cusco. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it’s famous for its artists, paintings, clothing and traditional instruments. There’s something for everyone in this city. The day finally came! Day three had me enjoying a lovely guided visit to Machu Picchu at sunrise. I had free time to explore the city on my own as well as with my guide. It was a lot to take in! I had to stop for a moment and felt the energy of such an ancient city. The history here was unbelievable and I will never forget my time here for as long as I live!4.What is the author’s attitude to G Adventures?A.Doubtful.B.Satisfied.C.Uninterested.D.Hopeful. 5.Why did the author stay in Cusco?A.To go shopping.B.To find a local guide.C.To get used to the high altitude.D.To do research about the Inca Empire. 6.How did the author feel when traveling around Machu Picchu?A.Full of excitement.B.Out of luck.C.Lost in doubt.D.Deep in regret.7.What is the best title for the text?A.My love of traveling B.My wonderful trip to PeruC.Peru: “Land of the Incas”.D.Traveling: the future of Peru.A small study out of Skidmore College examined the advantages of morning vs, evening exercise for both women and men. Paul, professor for health at Skidmore, led the study.“We had the groups divided into evening and morning groups,” he says. “We found women and men answered differently to different types of exercise depending on the time of the day, which surprised us.”The study showed that for women who want to lower blood pressure (血压), the risk of heart disease or reduce fat, morning exercise works best. Those women hoping for upper body muscle (肌肉) gains or mood (心情) improvement should consider evening exercise. For the men, the findings were somewhat different: Evening exercise lowers blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, and feelings of tiredness. But similar to women, they burn more fat with morning exercise.“For many people, the best time to exercise will depend on their chronotype,” says Heisz, author of Move the Body, Heal the Mind.“Chronotype is your body’s natural habit to sleep at a certain time—it’s what decides whether you’re a night owl or an early bird. For the 25% of the population that considers themselves a night owl, getting both enough sleep and enough exercise can be difficult,” adds Heisz. He continues, “Sleep—which provides your body the necessary time to recover (恢复) and make gains from exercise—should always be the first choice. When it comes to exercise, regardless of research on the advantages of certain exercises at particular times of the day, your results will not be good if it doesn’t allow enough time for sleep.”8.What can women get by doing evening exercise according to the study?A.A fat loss.B.A good mood.C.A lower blood pressure.D.A smaller risk of heart disease.9.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 5?A.Give an example.B.Tell the difference.C.Do an experiment.D.Explain a term.10.What does Heisz think is important to achieve good results of exercise?A.Enough sleep.B.Low-fat food.C.Plenty of water.D.Lots of exercise.11.What is the best title for the text?A.A Night Owl or An Early BirdB.Why Fitness Plan Being ImportantC.How to Change Your Exercise TimeD.The Best Time of a Day to ExercisePhysical education, or PE, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all. doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school. The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure (措施) to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights. Not doing sports increases teens’ hazard of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be prevented by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activities each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. This kind of running is the choice of many people who live in the city, work in the office and want to keep healthy. 161. Make good preparations before jogging.17 There, you’ll have an opportunity to find and buy all the necessary sportsware. Pay attention to the selection of jogging shoes, if you don’t want to suffer from the feeling of heaviness, pain and leg swelling after the run. With all these pieces of wisdom. your body will be truly grateful to you.2. Do fitting warming-up activitiesEvery runner, especially the beginners should know that all physical activities without proper warming up can cause a terrible pain and result in harm to muscles. AFarmer John and Farmer Bob were neighbors. For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well. Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence. One morning Farmer John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought. Then one day there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a carpenter(木匠)standing at the doorway. “I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the carpenter said. “I do have a job for you,” John said. “Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more. I don’t have such a neighbor!”The carpenter said, “I think I know what to do, sir, and I’ll be able to do a job t hat pleases you.”Farmer John helped the carpenter get the materials(材料) ready and then he was off for the day.About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all! It was a bridge! And the neighbor, Bob, was coming across, with his hand outstretched(伸出). “Hi, John! You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!”Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other.” said Farmer Bob. Then they turned to see the carpenter, who was ready to go. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I have a lot of other jobs for you,” said Farmer John. “I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.”21. Just before the carpenter came, John and Bob each otherA. didn’t speak toB. were friendly toC. often fought with D .never had bitter words with22. A Fence or a Bridge?BA survey sponsored by an international temporary service agency found that U. S. managers believe that people with a sense of humor do better at their jobs, compared with those who have little or no sense of humor. In fact, about 96 percent of those surveyed said people with a sense of humor do better. The survey went on to point out that the results suggest that a sense of humor may help light-hearted employees keep their jobs during tough times. And, what's more, it may push them up the corporate ladder past their humorless colleagues. Why? It seems that those with a sense of humor are better communicators and better team players.Studies have shown that happy workers are more productive. In fact, a researcher at California State University found that humor could help the employees to release tension. Research done by psychologist Dr. Ashton Trice at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia showed that humor helps us think. When people feel stuck on important projects, they tend to feel angry or depressed. According to Dr. Trice's research, taking time out to laugh can help us to get rid of negative feelings and allow us to return to a task or move on to another project unaffected by past defeat. If humor is really this important, then why don't we use it more often on the job? Most likely, the main reason is that many people are unaware of the positive effects of humor in the workplace. They tend to think humor and laughter are unproductive or unprofessional, or perhaps both. However, it is important to realize that some humor is not suitable for the workplace, and that it is often used at wrong times.25. Most people think a sense of humor can ________.A. help you to do your work betterB. make you have a rich lifeC. make you pleased with your workD. help you to make more friends26. Many people don't use humor more in the workplace because __________.A. they like keeping silent when workingB. they don't know the positive effects of humorC. they think they should obey the rulesD. they don't like joking or laughing27. A person with a sense of humor is easier __________.A. to feel surprisedB. to get along withC. to be worriedD. to be successful28. What is the main idea of the passage?A. People with a Sense of Humor.B. Humor Is Important in the Workplace.C. Humor and Humorless.D. Everyone Likes Humor.CRemembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.●Recite and repeat in conversation. When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.●Ask the other person to recite and repeat. You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.●Admit you don’t know. Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say. “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”●Use associations. Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note:“Vicki Cheng—tall, black hair.”To reinforce your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.●Limit the number of new names you learn at one time. When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning first names. Last names can come later.●Go early. Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. There’re fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to other an automatic review for you.29. How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?A. They will be moved.B. A medical research paper says cancer was once thought of as a problem mostly in the developed world. But now cancer is a leading cause of death and disability in poor countries as well. Experts from Harvard University and other organizations urge the international community to fight cancer aggressively, saying it should be fought in the way HIV/AIDS has been fought in Africa.Cancer kills more than 7.5 million people a year worldwide. Almost two-thirds are in low-income and middle-income countries. They discover cancer kills more people in developing countries than AIDS, tuberculosis (肺结核)and malaria (疟疾)combined. But the world spends only 5% of its cancer resources in those countries. Felicia Knaul from Harvard Medical School was one of the authors of the paper. She was in Mexico when she was found to have breast cancer. She received treatment there and her experience showed her the sharp difference between the rich and the poor in treating breast cancer.Felicia Knaul says, “And we are seeing how this is attacking young women. It’s the number two cause of death in Mexico for women thirty to fifty-four. All over th e developing world, it’s the number one cancer-related death among young women. I think we have to again say that there is much more we could do about it than we are doing about it.”Professor Knaul met community health workers during her work in developing countries. They were an important part of efforts to reduce deaths from the cancer. They were able to persuade people to get tested to prevent the illness. The experts say cancer care does not have to be costly. For example, patients can be treated with lower-cost drugs.32. What would be the main idea for the passage?A. Cancer – a leading cause of death in poor countriesB. What should we do in preventing and treating cancer?C. What makes the first killer in developing countries?D. Experts urge more efforts to fight cancer in poor countries.33. Felicia Knaul’s experience in Mexico shows that .A. many Mexican women suffer from breast cancerB. there is not enough medicine for cancer thereC. many Mexican women can’t afford medical careD. patients with breast cancer are treated differently34. From what Felicia Knaul says, we can draw the conclusion that .A. breast cancer is a great threat to young women in developing counties.B. people don’t pay enough attention to breast cancerC. breast cancer is the second killer among women in MexicoD. effective treatment for breast cancer is available in developing countries35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The number of cancer cases is decreasing.B. HIV/AIDS is not being taken seriously in Africa.C. Over 7.5 million people die of cancer every year.D. It is very expensive to treat cancer.

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their class-rooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school. One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them. What’s more, to have a great start to a high school yea r, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.1. According to the text, most students feel when entering the high school.A.excited B.nervousC.lonely D.disappointed2. When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?A.Before the eighth grade year starts.B.Right after the high school year starts.C.At the end of their eighth grade year.D.At the beginning of the new term in the high school.3. What can we conclude about the school clubs?A.There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.B.The school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans.C.Summer activities begin before school starts.D.The school office can help new students join school clubs. After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township. That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher.” I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet—no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace(火炉) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down. What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly! In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an i nfluence on the world that will last long after I am gone.4. Why did the author feel her first day as a teacher frightening?A.So many students were in class.B.The situations were quite different.C.No outdoor facilities were provided.D.The students were curious about her.5. What do we know about the school?A.It was poorly equipped. B.The playground was large.C.It was once damaged by a fire. D.The students were of similar age.6. What was a headache for the author?A.A Dutch family hated her.B.The students preferred farm work.C.The education officer offered little help.D.Some parents ignored children’s education.7. What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?A.They cared about each other. B.They had an influence on the world.C.They laughed away bad times. D.They did well in almost every subject. It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put myheadp hones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration. However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are c ertainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away. It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”8. What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Worrying. B.Exciting. C.Interesting. D.Relaxing.9. What can we learn from the small study?A.Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.B.Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity.C.Different types of music lead to different performances.D.The volume of music affects concentration.10. What do Taj and Danela have in common?A.They believe music doesn’t help concentrate.B.They use music to help with their paper-writing.C.They can’t focus on reading while listening to music.D.They don’t listen to music while doing math problems.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Should Students Listen to Music? B.Does Music Help Concentration?C.Is Music Related to Reading? D.Can Music Change Mood?At the beginning of my Senior Two, I received my letter from the New York University (NYU) exchange program, and I was very relieved (如释重负的). I finally had the chance to take high level courses, experience college student life, and gain some extra credit. My aim was to learn the basics of accounting, economics, marketing, and psychology. When I arrived, I found that there were only 30 students in the program. I was so excited, but also nervous. I was worried that I would not make friends in my new environment. However, I turned out to be totally wrong. NYU hosts free events every week, giving students the chance to meet new people and explore New York City. My favorite events were the Broadway show trips. But there were always a limited number of spots. Therefore, I had to sign up online as soon as I received the reminder and hope that I would be chosen to go.This summer, I have watched ten Broadway shows, including To Kill a Mockingbird, Aladdin, and Frozen. Actually, I was fully attracted by the shows. Watching a performance almost every week was so amazing. On the way to the different shows, I always met someone new and we’d often chat about our lives. I was so thankful for making so many new friends.By the time the shows were finished, it was usually late at night. However, I wasn’t scared as Times Square was always so busy, filled with people and lights. This summer was the best ever and I certainly caught a glimpse (一瞥) into college life at NYU. Surprisingly, it is not as scary as I thought.12. Who might be the author of this text?A.A college student. B.A high school student.C.A high school teacher. D.A student’s parent.13. What made the author anxious when arriving at New York?A.’ The difficult courses.B.The challenging program.C.The trouble in making friends. D.The strict and serious teachers.14. Why are the Broadway shows mentioned in paragraph 3?A.To introduce some Broadway shows.B.To show the author’s performance skills.C.To attract people to watch Broadway shows.D.To express the author’s appreciation for the program.15. What can be the best title for the text?A.A Taste of NYU College Life B.An Exploration in New YorkC.The Amazing Courses at NYU D.The Attractive Shows of Broadway What do you think when you hear the phrase “when pigs fly”? 16 This common saying is used to express the idea that something is highly impossible. For example, if you ask your parents when they’re going to buy you something very expensive, the answer might be: “When pigs fly!”17 An old mention of pigs flying appe ared in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. However, it is believed that Carroll may have picked up the phrase from the Scottish, who had been using the phrase for several hundred years. That may be right. There are also those who believe the phrase may have gotten its start in America. 18 It’s not surprising that many common sayings that developed back then had an animal or farm background. For example, farmers used to take pigs to slaughterhouse (屠宰场) along rivers on small boats. If it was foggy, people on the bank could only see the pigs’ heads above the fog. 19 This might have caused the saying to appear.Other countries also use animals to show impossibility. 20 Other countries, such as France and Spain, use phrases like “when frogs grow hair” or “when hens grow teeth”.FriendshipTwenty-one years ago, my husband gave me an eight-week-old dog, Sam, to help me ease the loss of our daughter. Usually, there's an assumption(假设) by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what's known as a Received Pronunciation (RP, 标准发音) accent, also called “the Queen's English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country dialect– from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands –are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.In a study by The University of South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated (对…作评估)how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working class. However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in an RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you strength.Kong Seong-jae, 25, is from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He's now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he's learned. “British people usually get really excited whenI use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I thinkit makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,” he said.So if you're working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.32.What can we learn from paragraph 1?A . Most Britons speak the Queen’s English.B . Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.C . Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.D . The dialect is less important than the RP accent.33.What do people think of the Brummie accent?A . It is closest to the RP accent.B . It belongs to the people of the working classC . It is smart and easy to understandD.It is preferred by foreign visitors to the UK.34.What does the underlined phrase “doing the opposite” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A . Speaking with regional accents.B . Speaking with the RP accent.C . Speaking with the Brummie accent.D . Speaking like Harry Potter.35.What is the passage mainly about?A . How much British people value the RP accent.B . A comparison between different British accents.C . ARecently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.“Surgery (外科手术)”, one replied. I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows, you can get at least 5cm taller!”At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can‟t deny that, but I don‟t t hink I would put myself through months of agony (痛苦) just to be a few centimeters taller. I don‟t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I‟m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality. No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.21. We can know from the passage that the author works as .A. a modelB. a teacherC. a doctorD. a reporter22. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to .A. marry a better man/womanB. attract more admirersC. get an advantage over others in job-huntD. become a model23. According to the passage, the author believes that .A. everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the costB. it‟s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobsC. media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgeryD. it is one‟s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one‟s career24. What does the author think of his height?A. He just accepts it as it isB. He tries to increase his height through surgery.C. He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact.D. He hates to be called a short man.BDUKE-NUS Graduate Medical SchoolBe Part Our 2011 IntakeDUKE-NUS Graduate Medical School is a joint collaboration between 2 top universities----Duke University School of Medical and the National University of Singapore (NUS).Our school follows the American style of medical education and students graduate with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree after 4 years..A. complete your high school studiesB. visit the college admission advisersC. attend the exams held by the collegeD. go through the online application procedure26. That is according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal. After tracking more than 20,000 people aged 45 to 79 years in the United Kingdom from about 1993 to 2007, Kay-Tee Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived an average of 14 years longer than those who didn‟t.“We‟ve known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but we‟ve not seen this benefit before,” said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britain‟s Medical Research Council. “The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat an d what social class they came from.”Study participants(参与者)scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake.Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviors would surely gain 14 years.“We can‟t say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things,” said Dr. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization. “The 14 years is an average across the population of what‟s theoretic ally(理论上地)possible.”“Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking isn‟t good for them,” Susan Jebb said. “We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change.”29. We can learn from the passage that .A. Susan Jebb did not take part in the study.B. the study observed people as well as tested specific changes.C. there‟s no need for people under 45 to adopt these good habits.D. only those from first class can benefit from these healthy behaviors.30. How to Live a Much Healthier LifeDRock-paper-scissors is a game played all around the world. As kids, we have relied on it to settle disagreements with friends—from which channel to watch to who gets to eat the last ice-cream—all because we think the results are completely random. But are they?Wang Zhijian, PhD, a professor at Zhejiang University, believes that there is a regulation behind this simple game. So he gathered 360 students, divided them into groups of six and had each group play 300 rounds of rock-paper-scissors, reported USA Today. After the first results, Wang thought he was wrong, because players chose each of the three moves about one-third of the time, suggesting that the game is random after all. However, Wang later noticed a surprising regulation of behavior in the data. When players won a round, they usually stuck to the same choice. But when they lost, they tended to change to a more powerful move. For example, if Player A had just thrown down scissors to beat Player B‟s paper, Player A was more likely to throw down scissors again while Player B was likely to choose rock, since rock beats scissors.According to Wang, this might be a function that is called “conditional response”. So, for the next step of his study, as he told BBC, Wang plans to do some research about how human brains make quick decisions when competing. Now that you‟ve learned how to predict the moves of your opponent, you‟ll have an advantage next time you play rock-paper-scissors with your friends. But there is one problem: make sure they haven‟t read about Wang‟s study, or your advantage will disappear.32. What does the underlined word “random” in the first paragraph probably mean?A. StrangeB. UnpredictableC. AmusingD. Equal33. What‟s Wang‟s discovery of the surprising regulation of behavior?A. 300 rounds of rock-paper-scissors can be done at onceB. The game rock-paper-scissors is random after all.C. The game is based on “conditional response”.D. The response of players doesn‟t seem random.34. If Player A has used rock to beat Player B‟s scissors, what will they probably do next?A. Player B is more likely to choose paper.B. Player A is more likely to choose scissors.C. Player B is more likely to choose rock.D. Player A is more likely to choose paper.35. What will Wang study in the future?A. How to improve players‟ ability to predict opponents‟ moves.B. The functions of the game that are planted into our brains.C. How human brains make quick decisions in a competition.D. The psychological cause of the players who always win.第二节( 共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
