The first paragraph
One of my favourite moments of the day is among the last -- the last conscious one, anyway. After several attempts at keeping my eyelids from fluttering closed and the book from collapsing onto my chest, I know it really is time to go to sleep. I affectionately place the book on the bed beside me. We sleep together, me and my book, me and those characters, me and my mixed-up dreams.

It's a super sad story about an orphanboy named Oliver who has a really tough life in Victorian England. The book starts with Oliver being born in this creepy old place called a workhouse, which is like a homeless shelter mixed with a prison for poor people. His mom dies right after he's born without even telling anyone her name. So Oliver grows up not knowing who his parents were or where he came from.Life in the workhouse is terrible for little kids like Oliver. The workers there are so mean and cruel. They barely give the orphans any food and they get beaten up all the time by these two evil employees named Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Corney. One day when Oliver is about 9 years old, he gets super hungry during meal time and goes up and politely asks for a second serving of gruel (which is like a really gross thin oatmeal). For this tiny offense, he gets whipped and punished!Oliver somehow survives his awful childhood at the workhouse. When he turns 9, the people who run it decide to have him start working as an apprentice to this creepy old undertaker guy named Mr. Sowerberry. But Oliver learns that undertakers bury dead bodies, which totally freaks him out. So he escapes and heads off to London all alone to try and find a better life.On his journey, Oliver meets up with this boy named John Dawkins, but everyone calls him The Artful Dodger. The Dodger is part of a crew of young pickpockets andcon artists who roam around London stealing from people. He takes Oliver to meet their boss, an old criminal named Fagin who is in charge of the whole little gang of child thieves. At first Oliver doesn't realize these guys are crooks. But then he sees them doing crimes and gets forced to join their little pickpocket ring against his will. Whenever Oliver tries to be good or not steal, Fagin physically abuses him and makes him go without food until he agrees to keep committing crimes. It's just one terrible situation after another for poor Oliver.Sometimes Fagin's nasty partner in crime Bill Sikes comes around and he's even more mean and awful than Fagin. Bill is a terrifying muscular burglar who has an unmarried girlfriend named Nancy that he's always smacking around and yelling at. Nancy actually turns out to have a good heart though, and she feels sorry for Oliver having to live in such horrible conditions as a kid criminal.Nancy meets up with a dude named Mr. Brownlow, who had his wallet and belongings stolen by Oliver when he first arrived in London (but Olly didn't mean to do it). Mr. Brownlow is a kindold gentleman and Nancy tells him about how Fagin has been forcing Oliver to be a pickpocket against the boy's will. This makes Mr. Brownlow determined to get Oliver away from that nasty criminal crowd and give him a better life opportunity. When Bill Sikes finds out Nancy snitched to Mr. Brownlow, he gets so enraged that he ends up brutally murdering her in one of the scariest scenes ever. It's horrifying and sad. Meanwhile, Mr. Brownlow does manage to locate Oliver and he takes the kid under his wing, determined to give him a good education and loving home. But the evil Fagin and Bill Sikes keep trying to get Oliver back so he can work for their criminal gang again. This leads to a super intense chase scene and confrontation between Bill and some other people who are protecting Oliver. In the end, Bill accidentally hangs himself while trying to escape across a rooftop. Fagin gets captured by the authorities and gets sent to jail or possibly even executed (the book doesn't say for sure). And finally, after all his suffering and misfortunes, Oliver gets to live happily ever after in the care of the generous Mr. Brownlow. He also finds out that his mother's family is actually rich and he's entitled to inherit a lot of money as her son. So ithas a happy ending at last for the poor orphan boy who endured such a hard knock life from the very beginning.Overall, Oliver Twist is a totally gripping story that makes you feel so terrible for what Oliver has to go through, but you just keep rooting for him to finally catch a break and overcome all the challenges and cruel people standing in his way. Charles Dickens was an amazing writer who did such a great job of making the characters and scenes come alive through his incredibly descriptive writing style. This book is a true classic that really opened people's eyes to how terribly poor children were treated in 19th century England during the Industrial Revolution era when the novel takes place.篇2Oliver Twist Plot SummaryCharles Dickens' classic novel Oliver Twist tells the story of a young orphan boy making his way through the cruel underworld of Victorian London. It's a tale filled with vivid characters, social commentary, and a surprising amount of humor and warmth despite its often dark subject matter. The story begins with the birth of Oliver at a squalid parish workhouse. His mother dies shortly after childbirth, having beenfound on the street and taken in. With no known relatives, Oliver is raised under the reluctant care of the workhouse authorities until the age of nine.Life in the workhouse is one of constant hunger, cruelty and mistreatment at the hands of the greedy and harsh parish authorities. When Oliver has the audacity to ask for more gruel at meal time, he is whipped and sold as an apprentice to a local undertaker. Finding the morbid conditions unbearable, Oliver eventually escapes and heads to London. On the outskirts of London, Oliver is taken in by an elderly gentleman after fainting from exhaustion and hunger in the street. However, the old man's housekeeper mistakes Oliver for someone else and summons the sinister Bill Sikes and his young accomplice, the Artful Dodger. Oliver is kidnapped back to their lair, where he meets the elderly master criminal, Fagin, who trains children to be pickpockets and burglars as part of his gang. For a time, Oliver is forced to live amongst Fagin's band of youthful thieves and pickpockets. Through the Artful Dodger, he learns the ways of the streets and participates in petty crimes, though his inherent goodness prevents him from fully embracing the criminal life. When Oliver is sent to assist in aburglary and is shot, he is taken in by the kind family he was sent to rob - the wealthy Brownlow household. While recovering, Oliver is suspected of being a member of Fagin's gang, but the kindhearted Mr. Brownlow sees the good in the boy and comes to be a paternal protector for him. Meanwhile, Fagin's criminal gang makes plans to kidnap Oliver back, assuming the boy will inevitably betray their secrets to his newfound benefactors.A complex web of plots, characters and backstories emerge, revealing that Oliver was born to a wealthy family, but was birthed in unfortunate circumstances. His malicious half-brother seeks to keep him from discovering his family ties for fear of being disinherited from the family wealth. This all builds towards a dramatic climax in which Oliver's supporters race to protect him from the vicious Bill Sikes, while seeking to unravel the secrets of Oliver's parentage. The novel culminates in Oliver being welcomed into the loving household he was born for, while Fagin's underworld gang meets a justly harsh fate.Throughout the twists and turns, Dickens colorfully brings to life the gritty reality of 19th century London, the plights of orphans and child workers, and the vast gulf between theselfishly rich and the desperately poor. Yet he uplifts the story with a sweetly optimistic hero in Oliver and lessons about the fundamental goodness in people. It's a sweeping, atmospheric drama that blends biting social criticism with breathless adventure and moving pathos. Oliver Twist stands as not only an entertaining Victorian novel, but an impactful work that shines a light on the darker underbelly of Dickens' era. The small, persevering figure of Oliver tugs at the heartstrings while reinforcing the triumph of good over evil and the human capacity for generosity and redemption.篇3The Mystery of the Winding Stair by Carolyn KeeneI just finished reading this really exciting book for my English class called The Mystery of the Winding Stair by Carolyn Keene. It's part of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories series and was such a page-turner! Let me tell you all about the crazy plot. The story begins when Nancy Drew, an eighteen-year-old amateur detective, gets a letter from her friend Ned Nickerson. Ned is studying at Emerson College in the big city, and his dorm advisor Mr. Gomber recently passed away under very suspicious circumstances. Gomber fell down the tight, winding stair in oneof the old campus buildings and broke his neck. The police ruled it an accident, but Ned thinks there's more to the story and asks Nancy to investigate.Nancy is thrilled at the prospect of a new mystery and immediately makes plans to visit Ned at Emerson. Her father Carson Drew, who is a lawyer, is going to be in the city on business too, so they travel together. When they arrive, Ned fills Nancy in on more details. Apparently, Mr. Gomber had recently inherited a sizable fortune from a distant relative. Plus, some strange things had been happening in the dorm leading up to his death, like furniture getting rearranged and personal belongings going missing. It's all very suspicious! To start her investigation, Nancy goes undercover as a student at Emerson, moving into the dorm where Mr. Gomber lived and Ned resides. Her first night there, some bizarre occurrences make Nancy think the dorm is haunted! Her bedsheets are pulled off while she's sleeping, and a vase crashes to the floor, spilling water everywhere. It's all very spooky. The next day, Nancy starts questioning students, faculty, and staff about Mr. Gomber's life. She learns that he was a bit of an eccentric loner and didn't have any close friends. He did take frequent walks alone down by the wharf though. Nancy alsodiscovers that the school is swimming in debt and in danger of closing down. Could someone have killed Mr. Gomber for his newly-inherited money to save Emerson College? It's starting to seem more and more like foul play.To take a break from her intense investigating, Nancy goes to the college dance one night with Ned. But danger follows her, and she gets trapped in the dark gymnasium kitchen! After a harrowing struggle, she manages to escape, but now she's certain someone is out to get her and stop her from solving the case.Nancy's detective work leads her to an old sea captain named Obb Babbitt who was close with Mr. Gomber. He reveals that Gomber had made arrangements to leave his inheritance to the struggling college after his death. This motive for murder makes several people suspects, including the school's president and its financial manager. With Ned's help, Nancy eventually discovers a secret underground tunnel leading from the dorm to the wharf where Mr. Gomber took his walks. At the end of the tunnel, they find an old unlocked door that could have provided access to the winding stair for an attacker! The mystery starts coming together. The climax occurs when Nancy and Ned stake out the tunnel entrance at night to catch the culprit. Sure enough, a shady figure emerges and heads for the staircase - it's the school president! Nancy follows and gets there just in time to see the president attempting to break into Gomber's former room. A huge struggle and chase ensue, and in the end, the president confesses that he killed Mr. Gomber to get his hands on the inheritance money and save the college from bankruptcy. What a crazy twist! In the final chapter, Ned and Nancy celebrate solving the baffling case. Emerson College intends to use Mr. Gomber's inheritance exactly as he wanted to prevent it from closing down. And as for our spunky teen detective heroine? She's already looking forward to her next big mystery! What an awesome book full of suspense, danger, and Nancy's brilliant deductive skills. I can't wait to read more Nancy Drew adventures.。

写一篇关于收集旧书的报道英语作文My Awesome Old Book CollectionHi there! My name is Timmy and I'm 10 years old. I'm going to tell you all about my really cool collection of old books. It's my biggest hobby and I just love everything about hunting for vintage books and adding them to my collection. It all started a couple years ago when my grandpa gave me a few of his old books from when he was a kid in the 1950s. They had these wild covers with spaceships and robots and stuff. The pages were all yellowed and crinkly. I just thought they were the neatest things! My grandpa told me he used to love reading those sci-fi adventure stories when he was my age. He said books were kind of a special treat back then because most families didn't have a ton of money for extras like that after the war. So he really treasured his small stack of books. After he gave me those first few books, I was hooked. I started keeping my eye out for more old books anywhere I could - garage sales, thrift stores, used book stores, you name it. My parents are really supportive of my little hobby too. Wheneverwe're out running errands, they'll let me quickly peek in any secondhand shop we pass to go hunting.I've gotten some really awesome finds over the last couple years! Like this beat-up old copy of Tom Sawyer from the 1920s with someone's name written in neat handwriting on the inside cover. Or a kids encyclopedia set from the 1960s with the freakiest retro illustrations you've ever seen. That one's a total gem.My favorite book, though, is probably this ancient novel called The Swiss Family Robinson from way back in the 1800s! Can you believe a book could be that old? The cover is all tattered and worn, but the pages are still perfectly readable. It's stuffed with the most amazing vintage drawings of kids fighting off pirates and living in a giant treehouse. My mind was completely blown the first time I read it.Collecting all these old books from decades and decades ago just feels like stepping into a time machine. They've got such a cool vintage charm that you could never recreate nowadays. The illustrations are always a total trip, with zany drawings in that classic retro style. And you never know what crazy stuff you'll find inside - vintage ads, old inscriptions from previous owners, randomly pressed flowers or four-leaf clovers that fell out and got preserved in the pages.I've also noticed that a lot of old books seem to lowkey promote values that aren't too popular anymore. Like the boys having adventures and doing dangerous stuff while the girls just sit around playing jacks. Or having a character that talks in an incredibly offensive stereotype for laughs. I have to admit, some of that retro attitude gives me a bit of secondhand embarrassment! But it's also fascinating to see what was considered normal back in the day.My most prized possession, though, is definitely my set of old-school book boxes. You know, those sleek tin cases that books for kids used to come packaged in during the 50s and 60s? I've scoured the earth to find four different boxes in great condition from classic series like The Bobbsey Twins, The Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew. They're the perfect place for me to safely store my most delicate and beloved vintage finds.Honestly, I could just go on and on about all the awesome old books I've collected and everything I love about this hobby. But I'll wrap it up by saying - if you're ever out at a garage sale or thrift store, keep an eye out for any cool vintage finds! Who knows, maybe those weathered old books could spark a newfavorite hobby for you like it did for me. There's just something magical about cracking open an old book from generations ago and getting a window into reading from way back when. It's like unlocking a hidden time capsule with every volume. Trust me, you'll quickly become just as obsessed with your very own old book collection as I am with mine!。

关于我的书籍分类五年级英语作文My Book CategoriesBooks are like portals to different worlds and experiences. I love getting lost in the pages of a great book! Over the years, I've read many books across various genres and subjects. While I enjoy all kinds of books, I've found that I tend to categorize them based on certain themes and qualities. Let me share the main categories of books in my personal library.Adventure and FantasyOne of my favorite categories is adventure and fantasy books. These are the kinds of stories that transport you to magical realms, epic quests, and daring exploits. Books like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, and The Chronicles of Narnia all fall into this beloved category. I'm drawn to these books because of the imaginative world-building, brave heroes, mythical creatures, and the eternal battle between good and evil. Whenever I'm in the mood for excitement and extraordinary journeys, I reach for an adventure or fantasy novel.Mystery and SuspenseWho doesn't love a good mystery? Books that keep you guessing until the very end are always thrilling. I have adedicated shelf for mysteries and suspense novels like the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and classic whodunits by Agatha Christie. These books challenge my deductive skills as I try to solve the puzzles and crack the cases before the characters do. The suspense keeps me on the edge of my seat, frantically turning pages to uncover the truth. For a real mind-bending experience, I sometimes delve into psychological thrillers that explore the darker corners of the human psyche.Science and NatureWhile fiction can be an incredible escape, I also have a deep fascination with the real world. That's why I adore books about science and nature. I have volumes on diverse topics like space exploration, dinosaurs, oceanography, and environmental conservation. These books quench my thirst for knowledge and help me appreciate the wonders of our universe. Reading about cutting-edge scientific discoveries or the intricate ecosystems of our planet fills me with awe and curiosity. I find that science and nature books not only educate me but also inspire me to protect our world.Historical FictionTime travel may not be possible (yet!), but historical fiction is the next best thing. I'm captivated by books that whisk me awayto different eras and cultures. From ancient civilizations to pivotal moments in world history, these novels bring the past to life in vivid detail. Some of my favorites include books about the Roman Empire, the Renaissance, the American Revolution, and the World Wars. I love learning about historical figures and events while being immersed in a gripping narrative. These books make history come alive in a way that textbooks simply can't match.Humor and ComicsSometimes, you just need a good laugh, and that's where humor and comic books come in handy. I have a shelf dedicated to funny novels, joke books, and comic compilations. From the zany adventures of Captain Underpants to the irreverent wit of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, these books never fail to crack me up. Comics, with their vibrant illustrations and engaging storytelling, are a visual delight. Whether it's classic superheroes or offbeat indie comics, I appreciate the art form and the joy it brings.Biographies and MemoirsWhile fiction can be incredibly inspiring, there's something special about reading true stories of real people's lives. Biographies and memoirs offer a window into the triumphs, struggles, and journeys of remarkable individuals. From famoushistorical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Marie Curie to modern-day icons like Malala Yousafzai and Michelle Obama, these books often leave me in awe of human resilience and achievement. I find biographies and memoirs not only educational but also deeply motivating, reminding me of the incredible potential we all possess.Poetry and Short StoriesSometimes, I crave a more concentrated dose of literary magic, and that's when I turn to poetry and short story collections. These books offer bite-sized tales and verses that pack a powerful punch. From the whimsical rhymes of Shel Silverstein to the poignant observations of Langston Hughes, poetry has a way of capturing emotions and experiences in a unique, evocative way. Short stories, too, can transport you to different worlds and perspectives within a few pages. I appreciate the craft and economy of these literary forms, which often leave me contemplating their deeper meanings long after I've finished reading.Classics and LiteratureNo book collection would be complete without a selection of classics and literary masterpieces. While some may consider these books daunting or "boring," I've found them to betreasures waiting to be discovered. From the timeless tales of Shakespeare and Jane Austen to the profound works of Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison, these books have stood the test of time for a reason. They offer insights into the human condition, explore complex themes, and showcase the beauty and power of language. While they may require a bit more effort to appreciate, the rewards of reading these literary gems are immense. As you can see, my book categories span a wide range of genres, subjects, and styles. Each category offers something unique and valuable, catering to different moods, interests, and curiosities. Whether I'm in the mood for adventure, mystery, knowledge, laughter, or profound contemplation, I can find solace and inspiration in the pages of my beloved books. That's the beauty of reading – it opens our minds and hearts to endless possibilities, one story at a time.。

英语作文介绍家乡现在的生活和过去的生活

英语作文介绍家乡现在的生活和过去的生活

英语作文介绍家乡现在的生活和过去的生活全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1My Hometown: Then and NowHi there! My name is Liam and I'm 10 years old. I was born in a small town called Riverdale and I've lived here my whole life. Riverdale is a really cool place with lots of friendly people and beautiful nature. I want to tell you all about what life is like in my hometown, both nowadays and how it used to be when my parents and grandparents were young.Let me start by telling you about Riverdale today. It's a pretty quiet town with only about 5,000 people living here. We've got a few schools - I go to Riverdale Elementary which has kids from kindergarten to 5th grade. There's also a middle school and a high school. The best part about my school is the huge playground we have with swings, slides, monkey bars, and even a zip line! During recess, all my friends and I run around playing tag or soccer.Downtown Riverdale is really cute. There's a Main Street with lots of little shops and restaurants. My favorite is Pete's IceCream Parlor which has the most delicious sundaes, milkshakes, and ice cream cones. Every Saturday, my dad takes me there as a treat after my soccer games. There's also Annie's Bookstore which seems to have a million books crammed into every nook and cranny. I love going there with my mom to pick out new books to read.On the outskirts of the town, there are a bunch of farms and orchards where people grow crops like corn, wheat, and apples. I have a good friend named Tyler whose family owns a big apple orchard. Every fall, my class goes on a field trip to Tyler's orchard. We get to pick apples right off the trees, go on a tractor ride around the property, and eat delicious apple cider donuts! Tyler's dad says they've been farming that same land for nearly 100 years. One of the best things about Riverdale is that we're just a short drive from Maple Forest, which is a huge park with hiking trails, a lake for swimming, and lots of cute cabins you can rent. My family tries to go camping there at least once every summer. We rent a cabin, roast s'mores over the campfire, and spend our days hiking, canoeing on the lake, and exploring. I've seen deer, rabbits, foxes, and even a black bear once!Obviously, Riverdale has changed a lot since my grandparents were young kids growing up here in the 1950s. My grandpa Callum was born in 1946 and loves telling me stories about the "old days" in Riverdale. Back then, the town was even smaller with only a few hundred people. There wasn't even a downtown area with shops and restaurants like we have now.My grandpa says the highlight of every week as a kid was going to the movie theater on Main Street to watch the latest films. He says tickets only cost a nickel back then! Can you believe it? There were no TVs or streaming movies at home like we have today. The theater was one of the only forms of entertainment.Instead of having a million books at Annie's Bookstore, my grandpa remembers the town having just a tiny library that kids would visit after school to borrow books. He says he read all of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery novels over and over again as a kid since there weren't that many other books to choose from.Farms were a huge part of daily life in Riverdale when my grandparents were young. My grandpa actually grew up working on his parents' dairy farm, milking cows and baling hay before and after school each day. A lot of kids didn't go to school at alland just worked full-time on their family farms. There were no fancy farm machines like tractors or combines back then either. All the farm work had to be done by hand or with horses. My grandma Elaine wasn't born in Riverdale, but she moved here as a young bride in the 1960s after marrying my grandpa. She says Riverdale seemed like such a rural, isolated place compared to the big city she had grown up in. There was no mall, no cinema, no restaurants other than a local diner. She had to grow her own vegetables in a little garden and can fruits and vegetables for the winter. My grandparents both talk about how quiet and peaceful Riverdale was when they were young. There was no noise from traffic or planes flying overhead. At night, they could see every star shining brilliantly in the night sky since there weren't any bright streetlights or buildings to block the view. Riverdale was just a tiny farming village surrounded by wide open countryside.Compared to back then, Riverdale today seems like a totally different place! We've got Video Game Galaxy, an awesome store with every new video game and gaming system you could want. That's something my grandparents never could have imagined as kids! We've also got pizza places, Chinese restaurants, a grocery store, a bowling alley, and a movie theater that shows allthe latest blockbuster films. My grandparents didn't have any of those fun activities or businesses in town when they were young.Still, some things haven't changed at all over the decades. Maple Forest is still an amazing place for hiking, camping, and seeing wildlife - just like it was 70 years ago. The farms on the outskirts of Riverdale are still growing crops and producing fresh fruits and vegetables, even if the farming techniques have modernized. And no matter whether it's the 1950s or the 2020s, the people of Riverdale have always been warm, welcoming, and proud of our charming little hometown.I feel so lucky to have grown up in Riverdale, just like my parents and grandparents before me. I've had such an idyllic childhood here being surrounded by beautiful nature while still having fun places to go and things to do in town. At the same time, I really enjoyed learning about how different life in Riverdale was for previous generations. I have so much appreciation for everything my grandparents andgreat-grandparents did without all the modern conveniences I take for granted. Listening to their stories has helped me realize how much both technology and communities can change over time.Whether it's generations ago or today, small towns like Riverdale really are special places full of strong communities and timeless traditions. I'm proud to call Riverdale my hometown and plan to keep living here even when I'm a grown-up. Maybe I'll be the one telling my grandkids stories about "the good old days" in Riverdale one day!篇2My Hometown: Then and NowHi, my name is Emily and I'm going to tell you all about my hometown - the way it is now and the way it used to be back when my grandparents were kids. It's a small town called Riverdale and it's located right along the banks of the Little Bear River. I love living here and learning about how things have changed over time. Let me start by describing what Riverdale is like today. These days, Riverdale is a quiet little community with lots of trees, parks, and hiking trails along the river. We have a few small shops and restaurants downtown, plus a library, post office, and fire station. My favorite place is the old-fashioned ice cream parlor that's been around since my mom was little. They make the most delicious sundaes and milkshakes! I also really enjoygoing to the public swimming pool in the summer and the sledding hill in the winter. One of the best things about our town is how everyone knows each other. We're a tight-knit community where people are always willing to lend a hand. If someone's car breaks down, you can be sure several neighbors will stop to help. And whenever there's a storm, people come together to clear the roads and paths. It feels like one big family living here.Of course, not everything in Riverdale has stayed the same over the decades. My grandparents have told me lots of stories about how different things used to be when they were growing up in the 1960s and 70s. Back then, the town was even smaller with just a few hundred residents. Most people worked at the mills and factories along the river. That's hard to imagine now since all of those old buildings are long gone.Instead of video games and iPads, my grandparents entertained themselves by exploring the woods, going fishing in the river, and playing pick-up baseball games in the fields. They remember a time before TV when families would gather in the evenings to listen to the radio together. On hot summer nights, everyone would sit out on their porches because very few homes had air conditioning back then. One big difference is that Riverdale used to be amuch more rural and isolated place. The nearest big city was over an hour's drive away, compared to nowwhen it's just a 20 minute trip. My grandpa tells me about howthey'd have to drive for miles just to go grocery shopping or see a movie since there weren't any stores or theaters in town. Anything they couldn't grow or make themselves, they had to travel for. I can't imagine having to go to that much effort just to get basics like clothing, toys, and books!Transportation was a lot different too. While we have buses, taxis, and ride shares now, most folks back then either walked everywhere or had just one car per family that was used only for big trips out of town. My grandparents had to wake up extra early to get to school since they lived too far to walk and had to wait for the school bus. Of course, they didn't have smartphones or computers to keep them entertained during the long bus rides! The school itself was also really different. It used to be just a small two-room schoolhouse instead of the big modern elementary school I attend now. All the kids from first through eighth grade learned together, seated at old wooden desks. My grandparents remember having to walk in lines, use inkwells and chalkboards for writing practice, and get punished by having towear a dunce cap if they misbehaved. So different from our bright classrooms with Smart Boards and iPads!Another major change is how much safer and cleaner our environment is now compared to back then. My grandpa worked at the sawmill as a kid and breathed in lots of dust and fumes that we now know are harmful. Many of the mills and factories used to dump waste right into the river, turning it brown and toxic. Thankfully, those days are long gone and the river has been cleaned up and protected. The air is fresh, the parks are beautiful, and we can swim and fish worry-free.While a lot has changed, some traditions have remained the same in Riverdale. Every summer, the whole town still comes together for a big Independence Day parade, complete with fire trucks, marching bands, and kids on decorated bikes. And of course the highlight is always the incredible fireworks show over the river once night falls. For Christmas, we still put up a giant tree in the town square that's decorated with thousands of lights for everyone to enjoy. My favorite is the Easter egg hunt in the park where brighly-colored eggs are hidden everywhere for us kids to find.So as you can see, my small little hometown of Riverdale has undergone many transformations over the generations, but it'smanaged to hold onto its cozy, tight-knit spirit. While my grandparents reminisce about the simpler times of their childhood, I feel so lucky to be growing up in an era with more opportunities and comforts. Who knows what Riverdale will be like decades from now when I'm a grandparent myself? I can only imagine all the amazing changes and advancements. But I hope it will still feel like the warm, welcoming community I've always known and loved. This little town will always be home.篇3My Hometown Then and NowHi there! My name is Emily and I'm 10 years old. I was born and raised in a small town called Oakwood. It's a really nice place to live and grow up in. In this essay, I'm going to tell you all about my hometown - what it's like today and how it has changed since my parents and grandparents were kids.Oakwood TodayOakwood is a pretty typical small American town. We have a charming downtown area with lots of little shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and a park with a playground. My favorite places are the ice cream parlor that makes delicious homemade ice cream and the bookstore that smells like old books. On hotsummer days, my friends and I love to cool off at the town pool or get slushies from the convenience store. Our neighborhoods are really nice too. All the houses have big yards and lots of trees. In the evenings, you can find kids playing outside until it gets dark. We have sidewalks on every street which makes it easy for me to ride my bike around town. I love living in a place where I feel safe playing outdoors with my friends without my parents having to worry.Even though Oakwood is small, we have pretty much everything we need - a few grocery stores, a hardware store, a library, doctor's offices, and schools. We're not too far from the bigger city of Centerville either, about a 30 minute drive away. That's where my parents go for work, to shop at the mall, or for anything we can't find in Oakwood. One of my favorite things about living here is all the events and festivals we have throughout the year. Every summer there's a big 4th of July parade and fireworks show. In the fall, we have a Harvest Festival with a petting zoo, pony rides, and a pumpkin patch. At Christmas time, they decorate the whole downtown area with lights and hold a tree lighting ceremony. No matter what season it is, there's always something fun happening in Oakwood!Oakwood in My Parents' DayOf course, Oakwood was a bit different back when my parents were kids in the 1980s and 90s. From the stories they've told me, some things haven't really changed much at all. We still have a lot of the same shops, restaurants, and events that my parents enjoyed like the fireworks show and Harvest Festival. Our neighborhoods look pretty similar too with all the houses and tree-lined streets. But my parents say the biggest difference is how much Oakwood has grown over the past few decades. The town used to be even smaller with only a few stores and restaurants downtown. There was no town pool or movie theater back then either. My dad remembers having to ride his bike a few miles just to go to the nearest convenience store whenever he wanted a candy bar or soda!Technology has changed a lot too since my parents were little. Nobody had cell phones, personal computers, or internet back in those days. If kids wanted to hang out, they actually had to call their friends on a home phone or knock on their door rather than just sending a text. My mom says she's really glad we have video games and streaming services to keep us entertained now instead of just playing outside all the time like they did.The schools have upgraded a bunch as well. My parents went to the same elementary and middle schools that I attend, but they say the buildings looked really old and run-down compared to how nice they are today after being renovated. We have way more resources too like computer labs, a bigger library, and a brand new gym. The playgrounds were just basic things like swing sets and seesaws rather than the big, safe plastic structures I have fun on today.Oakwood in My Grandparents' TimeFrom the stories my grandparents have shared, Oakwood looked like a totally different place when they were young back in the 1950s and 60s! Back then, it was a very small rural farming community with barely any downtown at all. Just a fewfamily-owned shops and businesses like a general store and a diner. Most people lived on farms or ranches right outside of town rather than in neighborhoods with houses close together. My grandparents say they had a very simple lifestyle compared to today's kids. They didn't have video games, internet, or even TV for most of their childhoods. Their entertainment came from reading books, playing games outside, and using their imaginations. Swimming holes in the creek, haybale mazes, and good old fashioned tag were some of their favorite pastimes.School was a lot different for them too. The school building only had a few classrooms and there were rarely more than 15 or so students of each grade level. They didn't have a cafeteria either - kids just brought lunches from home and ate at their desks. The classrooms didn't have high tech amenities like computers and projectors. Just old chalkboards and books were used for learning.Grandma and Grandpa both said they had to do a lot of chores around the farm growing up too. Things like feeding chickens and cows, slopping hogs, milking dairy cows, and helping tend to vegetable gardens and fruit orchards. It was a lot of hard work, but they said it taught them valuable life lessons about responsibility and the value of determination.Even though Oakwood has changed a whole lot over the decades, my grandparents still recognized it when I showed them pictures recently. The old church and feed store buildings are still standing downtown. And the creek they used to play in as kids still flows through the park, making me feel connected to their childhoods in its gentle waters.ConclusionIsn't it amazing how much a place can transform, yet still feel familiar at its core? I feel so lucky to have been raised in Oakwood during modern times, while still being able to learn about its rich history from my parents and grandparents. Even though things looked a lot different decades ago, I think our generations still share that same sense of community, simplicity, and appreciation for nature that makes Oakwood such a wonderful place to grow up. I can't wait to see what new changes the future will bring while keeping those treasured parts of the town's legacy alive!。

Natural resources are things that are useful to people and come from the earth. Materials for building houses are natural resources. So are foods, such asfruits, vegetables, animals that could be caught or hunted and water. The weather and land forms let certain things grow in different areas. They also determine(决定)which living things will be able to grow there. Areas with very rich soil are made to be good farming communities. Poor soil may send farmers to look for better places. However, areas with poor soil may attract those who have other purposes for the land. Poor soil doesn’t matter if you want to build a factory. It also doesn’t matter if it grows grass well. Each area attracts people based on their interests and purposes. Areas that support many different interests will naturally have larger populations. You may not think of the mountains, lakes or oceans as natural resources. In fact they are. Villages and cities built near water sources have been the most successful. People who want to catch fish for a living choose to live by the ocean, instead of the desert. People living near water can use it to meet their daily needs.Places that are difficult to reach will naturally have fewer people. Places that are high on mountain tops are not very desirable to most people. Neither are places that are in the middle of hot, dry deserts. For too long, humans have destroyed resources. We have been using up those that can’t be easily replaced.Renewable(可再生的) resources are those that can be replaced easily. We are lucky to have many resources that are renewable, such as the sun, wind, water and trees. We need to use more renewable resources. This will protect our planet.1.Areas with very rich soil can be used as_______.A.fishing places B.ranching placesC.a factory D.farming communities2.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?A.What people living near water live on except fishing.B.How big villages and cities by the oceans come out.C.People choose places to live according to interests and purposes.D.People don’t live in places that are difficult to reach.3.Which of the following does NOT belong to natural resources?A.Animals that could be caught. So where does food past its “sell-by” date go? The answer is in the trash bin. Besides shops, people also cast away a lot of food when they buy too much and can’t eat it up. To stop food waste, people have come up with great ideas. Take a look and try to join the action!②Set up food banks. When we have extra money, we save it in banks. This idea made people think. Could they set up “banks” for food? The world’s first food bank started in the US in 1967. Many other countries, including China, have caught up with this great idea. For example, Shanghai has recently made a “share fridge”. It stores cakes and canned food donated (捐赠) from nearby markets and restaurants. It’s free for anyone to enjoy.③Pay as you feel. The Real Junk Food Project is a company in the UK. It says that food past its “sell-by” date could still be OK to eat. So they collect it from supermarkets, and put it on shelves (货架) in special cafes. There, the food has no price label (标签). You can give as much money as you want. If you don’t want to spend money, you can help do some work there. There are now 125 Real Junk Food cafes worldwide. And the number is growing quickly.④Buy less. When there’s no food bank around, wha t can we do to help stop food waste? In two words: Buy less. Dining halls in more than half of US colleges are going tray-less (无托盘). It makes it harder for students to take too much. This small change brings a big difference. It reduces food waste by 25 to 30 percent, and saves water and energy because there are no trays to wash.1.The underlined words “cast away” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____.A.put away B.take away C.give away D.throw away2.Which of the following is true according to the article?A.People need to pay for food from “share fridge”.B.Dining without trays helps to reduce food waste and save water.C.Fifty percent of American restaurants are going tray-less.D.The food in the Real Junk Food Project is free for anyone.3.How does the writer organize the writing?A.B.C.D.4.What’s the main purpose of the writing?A.To show how important the food bank is.B.To introduce some ways of stopping food waste.C.To ask people to buy food past its “sell-by” date.D.To disc uss where the food past its “sell-by” date goes.Ⅴ.书面表达19、每位同学都希望成为班级中受欢迎的人。
