I knew the owner well and frequently complimented (赞美, 恭维) him on hisexcellent cooking.I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded, and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was then that I noticed that a man sitting at a corner table near the door kept glancing in my direction, as if he knew me, I certainly did not know him, for I never forgot a face. The man had a newspaper open in front of him, which he was pretending to read, though all the while I could see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I addressed each other. He became even more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well known in the restaurant. Eventually he got up and went into the kitchen. After a few minutes he came out again, paid his bill and left without another glance in my direction. When I had finished and was about to pay my bill, I called the owner of the restaurant over and asked him what the man had wanted. The owner was a little embarrassed by my question and at first did not want to tell me. I insisted. “Well,” he said, “that man was a detective.” “Really?” I said, considerably surprised. “He followed you here because he thought you were a man he was looking for,” the owner of the restaurant said. “When he came into the kitchen, he showed me a photograph of the wanted man. The nation of the Cherokees ( 柴罗基部落) lived in what is now the southeastern part of the United States. After the white man came, the Cherokees copied many of their ways. One Cherokees name Sequoyah saw how important reading and writing was to the white man. He decided to invent a way to write down the spoken Cherokee language. He began by making word pictures. For each word he drew a picture. But that proved impossible------there were just too many words. Then he took the 85 sounds that made up the language. Using his own imagination and an English spelling book, Sequoyah invented a sign for each sound. His alphabet proved amazingly easy to learn. Before long, many Cherokees knew how to read and write in their own language. By 1828, they were even printing their own newspaper. In 1830, the U.S. Congress passed a law. It allowed the government to remove Indians from the homes. The Cherokees refused to go. They had lived on their lands for centuries. It belonged to them. Why should they go to a strange land far beyond the Mississippi River? The army was sent to drive the Cherokees out. Soldiers surrounded their villages and marched them at gunpoint into the western territory. The sick, the old and the small children went in carts, along with theirbelongings. The rest of the people marched on foot or rode on horseback. It was November, yet many of them still wore their summer clothes. Cold and hungry, the Cherokees were quickly exhausted by the hardships ofthe journey. Many dropped dead and were buried by the roadside. When the last group arrived in their new home in March 1839, more than 4,000 had died. It was indeed a march of death.71. The Cherokees Nation used to live ________.A) on the American continent. Writing (20 points)Directions: In this part you are required to write a composition entitled My View on Food Quality in no less than 100 words according to the following Chinese outline. Please remember to write it on the Answer Sheet.1、目前食品质量安全问题日益成为人们关注的焦点。

2、分析劣质产品会带来哪些危害;3、你的看法和建议。

Despite the decline in the number of cases related to fake foods and foods of poor quality, problems remain serious in the market. Food-born diseases remain responsible for high levels of sickness and mortality in the general population, particularly for at-risk groups, such as infants, young children and the elderly. That’s why the safety of food has increasingly become the focus of our attention. Why are we so concerned about the safety of our food today? Because fake foods or foods of poor quality have already been finding their way into our homes, which may do much farm to our health or even kill us. Secondly, the greater profit made from fake foods or foods of poor quality may tempt more and more manufacturers to take part in the production of them. Thirdly, fake foods or foods of poor quality may also make our Chinese foodstuff industry fall into disrepute, causing them to suffer heavy losses both in economy and politics abroad. In this regard, in order to reduce the incidence and economic consequences of food-born diseases, the supervision of food production should be stepped up. What’s more, it is important to drastically increase penalties on those who neglect food safety statutes. After all, the Food Safety Department in our country should educate consumers about the risks presented in food and the safe food handling behaviors that can help minimize those risks. Nevertheless, it is our own awareness of good life style and hygiene habit that a healthy life relies on.河北省2011年普通专科接本科教育选拔考试英语试题答案及解析I Phonetics (5 points)1. This type of sleep generally occurs four or five times during one night of sleep, lasting five minutes to forty minutes for each occurrence. The deeper a person’s sleep becomes, the longer the periods of rapid eye movement. There are physical changes in the body to show that a person has changed from NREM(non-rapid eye movement) to REM sleep. Breathing becomes faster, the heart rate increases, and, as the name implies, the eyes begin to move quickly.Accompanying these physical changes in the body is a very important characteristic of REM sleep. It is during REM sleep that a person dreams.61. According to the passage, how often does REM sleep occur in one night?A. OnceB. Twice.C. Four or five times.D. Forty times62. These small dog like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal (残酷的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突) between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.66. Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes ______ .A. for recreationB. to limit the fox populationC. in the interests of the farmersD. to show off their wealth67. What is special about fox hunting in Britain?A. It involves the use of a deadly poison.B. It is a costly event which rarely occurs.C. The hunters have set rules to follow.D. The hunters have to go through strict training.68. Fox hunting opponents often interfere in the game ______ .A. by resorting to violenceB. by confusing the fox huntersC. by taking legal actionD. by demonstrating on the scene69. A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to ______ .A. prohibit farmers from hunting foxesB. forbid hunting foxes with dogsC. stop hunting wild animals in the countrysideD. prevent large scale fox hunting70. It can be inferred from the passage that ______ .A. killing foxes with poison is illegalB. limiting the fox population is unnecessaryC. hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violentD. Fox hunting often leads to confrontation between the poor and the richPassage 3If you listen to American music, watch American television or magazines, you will probably agree that the most popular subject of these forms of entertainment is love. Falling in love, solving the problems of love, and achievingthe happy ending—the big wedding are subjects of interest to the adult as well as the teenage public. Passage 3 Long before the white man came to the America, the land belonged to the American Indian nations. The nation of the Cherokees ( 柴罗基部落) lived in what is now the southeastern part of the United States. After the white man came, the Cherokees copied many of their ways. One Cherokees name Sequoyah saw how important reading and writing was to the white man. He decided to invent a way to write down the spokenCherokee language. In 1830, the Congress passed a law. It allowed the governmentto remove Indians from the homes. The Cherokees refused to go. They had lived on their lands for centuries. It belonged to them. Cold and hungry, the Cherokees were quickly exhausted by the hardships of the journey. Many dropped dead and were buried by the roadside. When the last group arrived in their new home in March 1839, more than 4,000 had died. It was indeed a march of death. 71. The Cherokees Nation used to live ________.A) on the American continent.
